Image
Focus Features had the final slot of the Official Selection here in Cannes this evening with Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t!, a dark comedy reuniting Margaret Qualley with the filmmaker on the heels of last year’s Drive-Away Dolls. Coen & Co. received a 6.5-minute ovation in the wee hours of the morning.

“Fun finish to the festival, yah?” said Coen to a lively crowd.

“It’s short for a movie that started after midnight,” added Coen about the movie’s 90-minute running time, “very humane!”

Qualley takes on the titular role of Honey O’Donahue, a small-town private investigator who delves into a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church led by a preacher played by Chris Evans.

Aubrey Plaza and Charlie Day also feature prominently in the cast, which additionally includes Billy Eichner, Lera Abova, Jacnier, Gabby Beans, Talia Ryder, Kristen Connolly, Lena Hall, Don Swayze,...

On Swift Horses – Review
Image
One of this weekend’s big film releases is yet another cinematic ride in Doc Brown’s DeLorean to what many believe to be a simpler, more “fun” era. Of course, last week, Sinners dispelled such notions about the oh-so segregated 1930s (and then tossed vampires into the mix). It’s appropriate that I referenced that 1985 classic, since this new film is also set in the 1950s, those “Happy Days” referred to in the classic TV show. Sure, it was the birthplace of great rock and roll, but for certain minorities, it was a time to be very careful to the point of hiding in the shadows. While this film also briefly touches on race, its main focus is on sexual orientation, which could also lead to harsh punishments from all sides (including the courts). Perhaps that’s why one of the characters in this tale wants to escape the...

On Swift Horses Review: Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones explore their sexuality in this period drama
Image
Plot: Muriel and her husband Lee are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of Lee’s brother. Muriel embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.

Review: In 2005, it was considered radical that Brokeback Mountain would get a wide theatrical release, considering it was a homosexual love story. How times have changed. Two decades later, On Swift Horses is the latest in a long line of queer films that boast substantial star power and nuanced narratives about same-sex relationships. The stigma is no longer as prominent as it once was, but there is still something to be said about heterosexual actors playing gay characters. Still, it bodes well for box office performance when you have up-and-coming talents like Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones in those roles. On Swift Horses, based on Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel of the same name,...

‘Beach Babes From Beyond’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Joe Estevez, Don Swayze, Joey Travolta, Burt Ward, Jackie Stallone, Linnea Quigley, Sarah Bellomo, Tamara Landry, Nicole Posey, Michael Todd Davis, Ken Steadman, Michael Roddy, Albert Andrukaitis | Written by Alexander Sachs | Directed by Ellen Cabot

Directed by Ellen Cabot (aka David DeCoteau), Beach Babes From Beyond is technically not a Full Moon film, as it is in fact one of the earliest releases from Charles Band’s 1993 created Torchlight label which specialised in genre-tinged softcore porn comedies. The imprint only ever produced three films between 1993 and 1998, including this film, its direct sequel, and a softcore vampire flick entitled Blonde Heaven, all of which were directed by David DeCoteau under his “Ellen Cabot” pseudonym.

A ridiculous blend of 60s beach party flick and direct to video porn, the official synopsis for Beach Babes From Beyond. goes like this: “An intergalactic babe borrows her dad’s T-bird ship to do a...

American Horror Story 1984 Episode 1

I have a lot of difficulty remembering character names, even on shows I watch regularly (and write about). I hate that I'm like this, and the older I get, the worse my memory becomes. When dealing with American Horror Story's ensemble cast, my inability to remember who is who only becomes worse, because despite the characters all being different, the cast remains basically the same. So, Brooke (Emma Roberts) ends up being Madison Montgomery, Montana becomes Billy Lourd, Margaret becomes "whatshername, you know, she was so good on the show last year," and so on.

Thankfully, 1984 does me a kindness early on in the episode with a flashy introduction to each character, complete...

The Unbelievable Number of Tesla Films to Be Made
While we are talking about fiction, science fiction and non-fiction stories of little importance, many filmmakers are currently exploding with ideas to make films based on Nikola Tesla’s life and work. It all happens like a thunder, explosion from the heavens, with studios and independent filmmakers alike. They are actively seeking investors, crowd funding and sponsorships, partnerships with studios, while simultaneously doing the hard work of script writing, research, and casting.

It seems like the world is awakening, an angelus force is impacting our consciousness. Up to this point, history has been filtered in many ways, and most people believed the media and the government. But with such an activist-like attitude, that is going to change. As people, we are starting to think Tesla’s way, bringing awareness of using free energy, caring about the environment and looking at the future with his eyes. In this article, I will...

The Bridge, Ep. 1.06: “ID” provides a few surprises, some tablesetting, and great guests
The Bridge, Season 1, Episode 6, “ID”

Written by Dario Scardapane

Directed by Alex Zakrzewski

Airs Wednesdays at 10pm (Est) on FX

This week, on The Bridge: Bobby Cobb gets a name (and a few ideas), Sonya gets a backstory, and Gina gets the eyes right

The Bridge reached an intense season best last week with “The Beast”, so it’s not surprising that this week’s installment is somewhat of a tablesetter, reacting to the events just prior and paving the way for several new arcs that promise character and plot points aplenty. We spend plenty of time at the Peter Meadows crime scene, down to the apparently obligatory reminder of his Colombian necktie (sorry guys, Hannibal did it better), and afterward Sonya unsurprisingly proves a less than ideal interviewer of trauma victims as she questions Gina about her father’s murderer. Serious question- why does anyone, including her, think...

Craig T. Nelson to Guest Star on Hawaii Five-0
It may still be on hiatus, but Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 is lining up some seriously impressive guest stars for its return.

At the top of the list of Craig T. Nelson, who will come on board a May Sweeps episode as a former CIA agent suspected of some seriously shady dealings, according to Zap2It.

Look for Nelson's character to possess intel on a number of past and present operatives, which will cause major problems for Doris McGarrett.

Among other high profile, incoming guest stars who will appear in another spring episode:

Henry Rollings (Sons of Anarchy) will portray a child abductor. Mare Winningham will portray his wife. Don Swayze will play a suspect in this abduction case.

Hawaii Five-0 finally returns with new episodes on April 15.

'Hawaii Five-0': 'Parenthood's' Craig T. Nelson stirs up trouble on the island
"Hawaii Five-0" has lined up a bunch of guest stars for May sweeps -- including one that could make some trouble for the McGarrett family.

Zap2it has learned excusively that "Parenthood" star Craig T. Nelson will play a "power-hungry" former CIA agent in an episode of the CBS series set to air in May. Separately, Oscar nominee Mare Winningham, Henry Rollins and Don Swayze will appear in an episode centered on a string of child abductions.

Nelson's character is suspected of some shady dealings while with the CIA, and he has information that could harm both current and former operatives with the agency. That does not sound like good news for Doris McGarrett (Christine Lahti), who still hasn't really come clean about her past with the agency.

In the other episode, Rollins ("Sons of Anarchy") will play a "vicious" man who has abducted several children and holds them in his home.

A Seriously Random List | Overshadowed Celebrity Siblings
Sundance is abuzz with the performance of Elizabeth Olsen, who apparently fell out of the same vagina that hatched the Olsen twins. Looks like she took all the talent with her too. But it got me thinking about other showbiz families and what I like to call the Roberts Dichotomy. Namely, Eric and Julia. Both actors, both born of the same genes, and yet, one opens wide her gaping maw and makes gabillions while the other's busy doing B-movies and birthing bigger child stars.

Thing is, I love Eric Roberts. I'll watch The Best of the Best pretty much every time it's on. It's like Rocky for sad lonely kickboxers. It's just strange that Julia gets all the accolades. And so started up a list of other semi-talented siblings overshadowed by the crazy successful brethren/sistern.

Fun Fact: Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola, and Jason Schwartzmann are all first cousins. Jason's mother is Talia Shire.

Bowler 'giggled during True Blood scene'
Grant Bowler at an event for The Walking Dead (2010)
Grant Bowler has admitted that he "giggled" while shooting a recent scene for True Blood. Bowler's werewolf character Cooter helped abduct Bill at the beginning of the season and was seen feeding off him with Gus (Don Swayze). "That was a love scene," Bowler told Entertainment Weekly. "It took all day to shoot, and Stephen Moyer and I laughed so hard in the back of the car - we were almost blowing takes, we were giggling so much - that we actually fell in love. We're having a bromance." Bowler also described Swayze as "irrepressible", (more)...

'True Blood': Grant Bowler reflects on his 'love scene' with Stephen Moyer, the brilliance of Don Swayze, and the size of Joe Manganiello
Anna Paquin, Ryan Kwanten, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis, and Rutina Wesley in True Blood (2008)
It’s been a month since we were introduced to Coot, the biker who helped abduct Bill for the King of Mississippi, played by Grant Bowler. But that was definitely a memorable first impression — for everyone. “When you get an audition scene where you’ve got a silver chain wrapped around Bill Compton’s neck and you’re feeding off him and howling, you kinda go, I think I’m a werewolf addicted to V,” Bowler says. “That was a love scene. It took all day to shoot, and Stephen Moyer and I laughed so hard in the back of...

True Blood: Who Took Bill? It’s Not Who You Think. Season Three Spoilers From Alan Ball
Seventeen days and counting till the season three premiere of HBO’s “True Blood”. What does the new season have in store for us? Showrunner Alan Ball spills the beans on the main themes of this summer’s new episodes and how these compare to the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse novels the show is based on.

Who Took Bill? (Don’t miss the new extended trailer for season three at the bottom of this article!)

Alan Ball: “For people who read the book, they’ll be surprised who kidnapped Bill (Stephen Moyer)…We find out very quickly who took Bill and where they took him. He won’t get back to Bon Temps until around the middle of the season.”

Why the departure from the books?

Ab: “Part of our challenge is that the books are basically Sookie’s (Anna Paquin) story, and they’re not anyone else’s...

Patrick Swayze
Swayze's Brother Slams Media
Patrick Swayze
Patrick Swayze's younger brother has criticised the media for speculating about the star's health in the months leading up to his death, calling the negative headlines "horrible."

The Ghost star spent nearly two years battling pancreatic cancer before he passed away in September.

He was often hit by false rumours which included claims he had suffered a heart attack, undergone surgery and reports which regularly suggested he was just days from death.

Donny Swayze is adamant the "lies" hindered his sibling's fight for life because it was so distressing to see tabloids talking about the actor's imminent demise.

He tells U.S. talk show host Larry King, "Grocery shopping at the 7-Eleven corner store for two years (was hard) because going into the grocery store was just too much. In every checkout stand they would have a big picture of my brother with some horrible headline with a lie, a blatant lie (that he had days to live). "

While the star's widow, Lisa Niemi, adds, "We (can) do a list of how many organs (the tabloids said) he's had removed, because he had part of his lung removed, part of his stomach, part of his intestine. Heart attack. You just can't believe that they can say this and get away with it."...

Patrick Swayze
Niemi: 'Swayze Knew He Would Die'
Patrick Swayze
Patrick Swayze began preparing for death from the very first moment he was told of the cancer diagnosis, according to his widow Lisa Niemi.

The Ghost star lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in September, less than two years after doctors discovered he was suffering from the deadly illness.

Niemi admits her late husband was mortified when he heard the bad news, because he knew he had little chance of surviving the aggressive cancer.

She tells U.S. talk show host Larry King, "He was having some indigestion problems and then noticed he had some jaundice. And we immediately got him in (to see a doctor). And everything just kind of snowballed from there. I didn't know a lot about pancreatic cancer at that point, but he did. And when he got that diagnosis, the first thing he said (was), 'I'm a dead man.'

"It's a really tough, tough, merciless disease, especially, you know, in the advanced stages, which he was diagnosed. For us, every day, every week was a supreme victory."

While the actor's younger brother, Donny Swayze, adds, "I was there when he found out that it had, indeed, metastasized to the liver, which, as you know, that's even more of a death sentence. I was looking in my big brother's eyes and he didn't even flinch. I don't know what was going through his mind, but after about 15 seconds, his eyes narrowed and he said, 'Well, it's time to jam. It's time to get busy.'"...

Patrick Swayze Dies at 57 of Pancreatic Cancer, Defies Odds in 1.5-Year Public Battle
Chicago – “Dirty Dancing,” “Ghost,” film, TV and dance icon Patrick Swayze died on Sept. 14, 2009 at 57 after a 1.5-year public battle with pancreatic cancer. He was in his Los Angeles home beside friends and family.

The legendary actor made no secret of his condition, wrote a memoir with his wife since he was diagnosed in Jan. 2008 and braved through filming of the TV crime drama “The Beast” while refusing to ingest painkillers so as not to derail his performance. He was noticeably thinner on “The Beast” and shooting was difficult on Swayze physically, but he persisted with his craft nonetheless.

Patrick Swayze's Pancreatic Cancer Reportedly Spreads to Liver
Sad news comes from actor Patrick Swayze as report has been mounting that his pancreatic cancer has spread to his liver. The National Enquirer breaks the report and several other gossip sites are soon to report the same matter, claiming Patrick even has begun saying goodbye to friends and family after learning his cancer spreads.

"Patrick recently got word that the cancer had spread to his liver and that is what his doctors said would begin the countdown to the end. Patrick knew it was coming because he was suffering increased weakness," a source tells the National Enquirer. "At times, he was so weak that he could barely walk without feeling faint. Sometimes he feels out of breath and has to sit down."

Patrick reportedly has told Lisa Niemi, his wife of 33 years, and his actor brother Don Swayze that he doesn't have long time to live. "Lisa phoned Donny...
