Hiroyuki Takei

It's Official. Shaman King Has Yet Another Series in the Works
Image
Shaman King officially has a new series in the works. Hiroyuki Takei's Shaman King is a cult classic shōnen which has over time received two sequels in Shaman King: Flowers and Shaman King: The Super Star. The series stands as one of the most unique battle shōnen available today, in part due to Takei's interest in nonviolence and Buddhism. It follows the story of a shaman boy, Yoh Asakura, who fights to become Shaman King—effectively a god—alongside his young fiancée, renowned spirit medium Asakura Anna.

The series has an undeniable charm, tracing Yoh and Anna's steps as they gather a troupe of friends (flesh and spirit alike), eventually taking the confrontation with Yoh's brother, Hao, as a priority. Shaman King has maintained a steady following since its initial debut in 1998. Starting with the sequel series, Shaman King Flowers, focus has shifted to Yoh and Anna's son, Hana.

Chainsaw Man's Creator Isn't Just Great, He's One of the Decade's Most Important Mangaka, but Not for the Reason Fans Think
Image
Chainsaw Man is Tatsuki Fujimoto's most famous ongoing work, although with other acclaimed projects before and since then, including Fire Punch, Goodbye, Eri, and Look Back (recently adapted into a successful anime movie) he's amassed an adoring following. However, Fujimoto's work has not only shaped the readers' perception of his idiosyncratic style over the years, but also the careers of many other mangaka. The Chainsaw Man creator had incredible assistants behind him, including Tatsuya Endo, Oto Tda, Yuji Kaku, Yukinobu Tatsu, and Tohru Kuramori.

Chainsaw Man has become a global phenomenon, selling over 28 million copies. Fujimoto's many assistants have also gone on to create stories and attain impressive presences in the manga scene, with massive hit anime to many of their credit. While this is not an unusual phenomenon, the impressive number of assistants to Tatsuki Fujimoto who have gone on to create other successful manga is fascinating to explore.

Eiichiro Oda, Gege Akutami, Yoshihiro Togashi and 34 Other Mangaka Involved in an Ugly Rurouni Kenshin Controversy
Image
The 30th anniversary should be a grand celebration for any series. Although, the same can’t be said about Rurouni Kenshin, given its creator’s controversial track record. A few years back, Nobuhiro Watsuki landed himself in some serious controversies. His actions were severe enough to have charges placed against him.

With a recent development, many renowned mangaka including Eiichiro Oda and Masashi Kishimoto are at the brunt of severe backlash for associating with Watsuki. Their association could be labeled as a mere obligatory gesture, but that doesn’t seem to be the case entirely.

Bleach's Tite Kubo Absent in Honoring Convicted Shonen Jump Author's 30th Anniversary Project
Image
Disclaimer: Original Rurouni Kenshin creator and artist Nobuhiro Watsuki was convicted of possessing child pornography in 2018. Cbr does not condone Watsuki's past actions or support his ongoing work.

Anime fans are noting that Tite Kubo, the writer and artist of Bleach, is not involved in an anniversary project at Shonen Jump that honors a controversial manga author. Despite Nobuhiro Watsuki's 2017 arrest and 2018 conviction for possessing child pornography, Shonen Jump and most of its top creators will celebrate Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin series for its 30th anniversary.

According to the Shonen Jump News account on X (formerly Twitter), a 30th anniversary exhibition for Rurouni Kenshin will be held in Kyoto, Japan. The anniversary event will feature original artwork from the series and commemorative illustrations by numerous Shonen Jump creators. Among the list of highly regarded Shonen Jump artists are Eiichiro Oda (One Piece), Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen), Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) and Kohei Horikoshi (My Hero Academia). However,...

“There’s no way I could possibly draw that”: Even Eiichiro Oda Knew His Drawing Skills Hardly Measured up to One Rival Mangaka – It’s Not Masashi Kishimoto
Image
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is among the Big Three, and for good reason. One Piece has been serialized longer than both Bleach and Naruto and is still the most popular ongoing Shonen manga out there. Despite the popularity and fanfare, Eiichiro Oda has had to face criticism for his manga.

Fans often complain about Eiichiro Oda’s art style in One Piece. At first glance, the panels look a bit overburdened; however, all the details are absolutely necessary in One Piece. The author has been compared to Masashi Kishimoto and Tite Kubo as their art styles are apparently more aesthetically pleasing than Oda’s. Despite all the comparisons, there is only one rival who truly sticks out in Eiichiro Oda’s mind.

‘Shaman King: Flowers’ Recap (Episodes 1-12): Did Hana Return From Asura’s Hell?
Image
The proper implementation of the concept of legacy is a challenging affair in Shounen manga, as is seen in some of the immensely popular titles like Naruto and Dragonball Z. Most often, the weight of the fan favorite iconic characters burdens their legacy immensely, thereby hindering their growth as individual characters. Thankfully, that’s not the case in Shaman King: Flowers, a spin-off and sequel to the original Shaman King created by Hiroyuki Takei, that focuses on the future of the series by charting the journey of Hana Asakura, the son of legendary shaman duo Yoh Asakura and Anna Kyoyama. The series relies on the world-building established in the original series but doesn’t let go of the sense of individuality it has managed to create for itself.

The first twelve episodes of Shaman King: Flowers mainly work as an introduction to Hana’s world, bringing in new characters—legacies...
