Henry Cavill's 2019 Sleeper Hit Has Become a Must-Watch Action Thriller on Streaming
Image
A long-forgotten crime thriller from Henry Cavill’s past is suddenly one of the hottest tickets on streaming — and no, it’s not The Witcher or Man of Steel. The 2019 action flick Night Hunter has clawed its way into the Top 10 on Paramount+, earning a second life after years of obscurity. According to FlixPatrol, Night Hunter is currently ranked #8 on Paramount+’s Top 10 movies chart, bolstered by a surge in viewership across South and Latin America. The David Raymond-directed film has been sitting comfortably in the streamer’s regional Top 10 lists throughout the past week — not bad for a film that made just $1 million at the global box office and got roasted by critics.

Originally titled Nomis, the film stars Cavill as Detective Walter Marshall, who’s investigating a string of kidnappings tied to a deeply unsettling online predator. What begins as a standard procedural morphs into something far more sinister,...

Alan Ritchson and Henry Cavill's 71% Rotten Tomatoes Action Thriller Is Still a Global Hit on Streaming
Image
Reacher and Superman walk into a war zone—and viewers can’t get enough. Last year, Alan Ritchson and Henry Cavill teamed up for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, a gritty, guns-blazing World War II thriller that underwhelmed at the box office but is now thriving on streaming, as so many underperformers are wont to do these days. After a quiet theatrical run, the Guy Ritchie-directed film has become a global hit on Prime Video, where it's slowly climbing the charts.

Despite a 68% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have rallied behind the film, pushing its audience rating up to a whopping 91%—proof that viewers still want their action with a little grit, a little style, and a lot of slow-motion headshots. Written by Ritchie alongside Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, and Arash Amel, the movie adapts Damien Lewis’ non-fiction book of the same name. It follows a small, off-the-books...

Taylor John Smith Talks Preparing for ‘Warfare’: ‘This Is Going to Be a Kick in the Balls’
Image
From a deleted scene in “Hunger Games” to a starring role in “Where the Crawdads Sing,” Taylor John Smith has built up an impressive resume. On Friday, he appeared on stage at the Taormina Film Festival to introduce Ray Mendoza’s and Alex Garland’s film “Warfare.” Later, he sat down with Variety to talk about the film and his career so far.

You have “The Hunger Games” as one of your first credits.

I was not even a glorified extra on “The Hunger Games.” I was in the bonus scenes.

You got cut out?

Deleted scenes, exactly. It was my first time on a film set and Gary Ross was directing. It was a cool experience, but when you end up on the DVD, like bonus scenes here… I was just happy to be there, scared beyond anything. I’m so grateful that this has been my job, since I was 18.

Depravity's Dermot Mulroney On Thriller Villain's Unique Look, Acting With Only 1 Line Of Dialogue & Chicago Fire
Image
Dermot Mulroney is a mysterious figure whose darkness may extend well beyond the surface in Depravity. Having first found acclaim in such smaller dramatic fare as Long Gone and The Thing Called Love, Mulroney would become well-known for his work as the love interest in a number of iconic titles, including My Best Friend's Wedding and New Girl, while also co-starring in the likes of About Schmidt and The Family Stone. More recently, Mulroney has found success with the likes of Scream VI, Anyone but You and Marvel's Secret Invasion.

In Depravity, Mulroney stars as Mr. Evers, a peculiar tenet of an old-fashioned apartment building. Watched closely by his neighbors, Grace and Aria, Mr. Evers is generally seen coming and going at odd times of the night with his Rottweiler in tow, while also having a group of bizarre visitors in and out of his apartment. When Grace and Aria...

Depravity's Victoria Justice & Devon Ross On Unpredictable Thriller, Fight Scenes And Filming First Intimate Scene
Image
Victoria Justice and Devon Ross are a pair of college friends who get wrapped up in a dangerous situation in Depravity. Justice first rose to stardom with her tenure on Nickelodeon, first starring in the teen comedy Zoey 101 for seasons 2-4 before going on to lead her own show, Victorious, and has since starred in everything from Fox's Rocky Horror Picture Show remake to the Netflix supernatural comedy Afterlife of the Party. Ross, on the other hand, is an on-the-rise actor, with her breakout role having recently come in the Alicia Vikander-led Irma Vep miniseries.

Justice and Ross star in Depravity as Grace and Aria, two roommates living in a classic old apartment building, though living very different lives, as the former is an outgoing young woman in law school, while the latter is a reserved art lover still processing a traumatic event from her past. When the...

Depravity is a new Hitchcockian thrillride that sees a young woman (Victoria Justice) suspect that her neighbor, Mr. Evers (Dermot Mulroney), is a potential murderer. After things go awry, the woman and her friends quickly discover more about Mr. Evers than they ever could have possibly imagined. Despite only having a single line of dialogue in the entire film, Mr. Evers still plays a pivotal role in Depravity, and according to writer and director Paul Tamasy, several other big name actors were in the running for the part before it went to Scream VI star Dermot Mulroney.

‘Depravity’ Movie Ending Explained And Recap: Is Aria Dead Or Alive?
Image
Paul Tamasy’s directorial debut, Depravity, starring Victoria Justice, is a strangely generic crime thriller that aims to convey the inner darkness prevalent among people through a tedious, overtly stretched-out story involving three youngsters and a series of bloody mischiefs. While the premise is simple and somewhat interesting, the plot isn’t gripping at all, and the characterization and acting are mediocre at best, if not unnecessarily over the top most of the time, making the nearly two-hour-long movie feel like an eternity. The third act completely falls apart without adding any sort of emotional weight to the narrative, and by the time Depravity reaches its ending, you probably won’t care about the fate of the characters anyway, because nothing in the narrative implored you to do so.

10 Great Action Movies That Are Based On True Stories
Image
Many of the best action films are based on real-life events that resonate with audiences. More often than not, films that portray reality have been easily associated with images of war, but this "myth" has been overcome many times with the release of relatively recent blockbusters, such as The Fighter, The Revenant, and 12 Years a Slave.

From coverage of political events to retellings of infamous prison escapes and well-known individuals who struggled in life, the greatest movies of the action genre demonstrate a certain degree of originality. However, they also stick to the historical truth and try to offer the most accurate interpretation of it onscreen.

Henry Cavill's Latest Movie Sets PVOD Release Date After Disappointing Run in Theaters
Image
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is getting another shot at finding an audience. Lionsgate has revealed that the Henry Cavill-led action movie is heading to Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through this Friday.

Although The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has been in theaters for less than a month, the movie has drastically underperformed at the box office. At the time of writing, Ungentlemanly Warfare has only grossed $19.3 million worldwide off a budget of $60 million, meaning that the movie is destined to be a financial failure, at least during its theatrical run. This is likely why Lionsgate is releasing The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on PVOD on Friday, May 10, hoping that those who don't frequent the theater will buy or rent the movie at home. Digital platforms that Ungentlemanly Warfare will be available on include, but are not limited to, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu.

Why The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare Only Made $9M At The Box Office, But Isn't A Bomb
Image
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare had a limited domestic release with an opening box office weekend of $9 million. The film exceeded early projections despite its underwhelming performance at the box office. Lionsgate plans to stream the movie outside the U.S., explaining its lower box office earnings.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare's opening weekend at the box office was unimpressive, to say the least, but the Henry Cavill-led movie has nothing to worry about concerning being regarded as a box office bomb. The 2024 spy action comedy film, directed by Guy Ritchie and written by Ritchie, Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, and Arash Amel, is based on Damien Lewis' 2014 novel Churchill's Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare's story chronicles a fictionalized version of Operation Postmaster — a British mission executed in 1942 during World War II.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare received fairly positive reviews,...

Film Review: Forgettable ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’
Image
Chicago – “The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare” wants to be “Inglourious Basterds” in the worst way … but Henry Cavill is no Brad Pitt, and Guy Ritchie is no Quentin Tarantino. It’s a featherweight romp about British rogues killing Nazis that’s arch, witty, and completely forgettable. It goes down easy enough, but seems unlikely to inspire the love and devotion it so clearly craves.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

The film has a toehold’s basis in fact, focusing on declassified details of a secret group of colorful agents embarking on black ops for Prime Minister Winston Churchhill during World War II. Henry Cavill stars as the dashing leader of the group who are there to kill Nazis and look good doing it. He’s a handsome and well educated military man (and spy) who doesn’t play by anyone’s rules but his own, yet is devoted to King and Country all the same.

Movie Review: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Image
The new spy thriller set during World War II entitled The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has the unique distinction of being a somewhat true account of not only a pivotal mission during the campaign, but also of the germination of the character of James Bond – to a certain extent at least.

Ostensibly based on true events documented in recently declassified British War Department documents, the film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare imparts the tale of an organization created during World War II under the guidance of Prime Minister Winston Chruchill. This “top-secret” unit is comprised of a group of men (and one woman) brought together by Gus March-Phillips (Henry Cavill) to undertake an audacious mission that could alter the course of the war against the Nazis.

Phillips is recruited for this mission by Brigadier Gubbins (Cary Elwes) – otherwise known as “M” – and his second in command Ian Fleming (Freddie Fox...

Stars: Rory Kinnear, Henry Cavill, Freddie Fox, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Alex Pettyfer, Eiza González, Babs Olusanmokun, Cary Elwes | Written by Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, Arash Amel | Directed by Guy Ritchie

Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Based on what is allegedly the first “Black Ops” mission it’s a variation on The Dirty Dozen and all the knock-offs that followed, right up to and including Inglourious Basterds.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opens with a boat having just been boarded by several members of the German Navy. As they pour gasoline over the deck, they tell its occupants they have the choice of staying on board and burning to death, or jumping overboard and drowning. For some reason, however, they don’t seem very worried.

From there we jump back 25 days, to Churchill watching newsreel footage about Hitler’s U-boats keeping American troops from entering the war.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Review: Guy Ritchie’s Cheeky, If Undercooked, WWII Yarn
Image
Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on war correspondent Damien Lewis’s book of the same name, which tells the true story of an unsanctioned British military mission to sink the German ships that supplied all of their U-boats around the Spanish island of Fernando Po during World War II. The film also makes a point of announcing that the story comes from documents from Winston Churchill’s first term in office that were declassified in 2016, introducing each shrewd and ruthlessly efficient member of the ragtag crew carrying out this mission with a litany of their qualifications.

Narratively, the film plays out like a traditional historical thriller, yet it turns these men into impossibly proficient, virtually invincible killing machines who dispose of Nazis with such casual ease that they might as well be superheroes. And not only is the leader of this vicious, unruly pack, Major Gus March-Phillips,...

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Review — Glib Thrills!
Image
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an impossibly glib, rip-roaring, and exciting action picture. It’s the type of old-fashioned entertainment full of movie stars who get the job done, cracking-wise, and goddamn, they look good doing it. You can’t help but get swept up in the action and think a franchise is born.

It helps to have a cast with this much swashbuckling beefcake, including a Superman, a Reacher, and a G.I. Joe. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a film my wife calls the “Five Hot Guys” movie, with lots of eye candy and bloodshed for everyone involved. In a way, it is the perfect date movie.

‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ Review: Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson in Guy Ritchie’s Slapdash Tale of WWII Derring-Do
Image
With 2023’s compelling Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle The Covenant, Guy Ritchie took a more serious dramatic turn, away from the flashy action, glib humor and mashup of period settings with contemporary attitude that had characterized many of his biggest commercial successes. With its typically Ritchie-esque ensemble of quippy rascals, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare sees the director back on more customary territory. Sort of. Chronicling a covert World War II mission manned by a band of renegades, the movie is diverting but remains awkwardly stuck between a larkish caper and a more gripping combat action thriller.

Scripted by Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, Arash Amel and Ritchie, based on the nonfiction book by war specialist Damien Lewis, the remarkable story comes from British War Department documents dating back to Winston Churchill’s first term in office, which were declassified in 2016.

The film follows the semi-fictionalized covert special forces mission manned by a...

“I nearly drowned!”: Henry Cavill Can’t Stop Being Superman as Actor Saved Co-Star from Claws of Death After Major Mishap
Image
Have you ever wished that your favorite fictional character could actually exist and save the day? Well, for actor Alex Pettyfer, that wish seems to have been granted when his co-star, Henry Cavill, famously known as Superman, prevented him from “falling off a boat”. This near-death incident occurred on the set of their next film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which will hit theaters next month.

Although Cavill is sadly no longer DC’s Man of Steel due to James Gunn’s takeover, it appears that the British actor, 40, has adopted Superman’s valiant traits in real life. The upcoming Guy Ritchie film, based on Damien Lewis’s book of the same name, chronicles the experiences of the British organization (Special Operations Executive) during World War II.

Image
Exclusive: Taylor John Smith (Where The Crawdads Sing) is attached to star in What’s Left of Us, based on the 2009 memoir by Ritchie Farrell who has adapted for screen.

What’s Left of Us charts the tough upbringing of Farrell in a working class neighbourhood in Massachusetts. To overcome a birth defect, his father pushed him to become a star athlete – sometimes he would use a belt as a teaching tool. Once, he used an electric carving knife. By the time he was 30, he was a heroin addict, stealing from friends, shooting up during visits to his children and running from shameful family secrets.

The project will mark the fifth collaboration between producer Dorothy Aufiero and Tamasy, after they worked on Depravity,...
