Nell Fisher, Gabrielle Echols, Alyssa Sutherland, and Morgan Davies in Evil Dead Rise (2023)
In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) in 2023, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. Last year, they proved their commitment to this idea by hiring Sébastien Vaniček, who made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Sam Raimi's Popular $303M Horror Franchise Gets Major Filming Update
Image
The massively popular Evil Dead franchise will take its next step forward in 2026 with Evil Dead Burn, and the production process got a major update straight from the movie's writer/director, Sébastien Vaniček. After a long hiatus, the Evil Dead franchise was rebooted in 2013 with Evil Dead by Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus), and followed up with Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise in 2023.

The franchise's current cadence is to have Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, the originators of the Evil Dead series, hand-pick a new director for each new movie. Each director brings their own unique style and flair to the base concept of Deadites wreaking havoc on the mortal world, and while there are some commonalities and Easter eggs, each new movie can comfortably be treated as a stand-alone.

The latest choice is 28-year-old writer and director Sébastien Vaniček, who put his stamp on the horror genre with the...

Meet The Girl On ‘The Evil Dead’ Poster
Image
Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead has a gripping poster, featuring a beautiful girl rising out of an open grave on a dark, foggy night with a rickety wooden cross behind her. A hairy, monstrous arm is wrapped around her neck, pulling her back into the open grave, as her arm beseeches for help that will never come. There’s just one problem with the poster—that mysterious girl and that scene Aren’T in the film.

Meet Bridget Hoffman, the girl who is (and isn’t) in Sam Raimi’s classic Evil Dead franchise!

“Yes, that’s me,” actress Bridget Hoffman smiles, playfully recreating her pose, with her right hand in the air and her left arm wrapped around her own neck.

“I wound up on the poster for The Evil Dead even though I’m not in it!” she said. “I’m from Michigan. I went to Michigan State University...

Jaume Collet-Serra Next Movie, a Survival Thriller ‘Play Dead’ Is Being Described as “Don’t Breathe meets 1917”
Image
Jaume Collet-Serra is keeping the momentum going after the success of his Netflix thriller Carry-On. The filmmaker, known for House of Wax, Orphan, and The Shallows, has lined up his next project—Play Dead, a survival thriller.

Details about the plot remain secret, but sources describe Play Dead as a mix between Don’t Breathe and 1917. Don’t Breathe, directed by Fede Alvarez, is a tense home invasion horror, while 1917, helmed by Sam Mendes, is a gripping war film. This description suggests Play Dead may combine elements of both, possibly blending high-stakes survival with a wartime setting. However, that remains speculation for now.

The screenplay was written by Peter Stanley-Ward and Natalie Conway. The film is being produced by Nocturnal, BoulderLight Pictures, Bad Grey, and Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures.

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are producing through Ghost House, alongside Akiva Nemetsky and Keaton Heinrichs for Nocturnal, Jd Lifshitz and Raphael Margules for BoulderLight,...

Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton in Carry-On (2024)
‘Play Dead’ – Jaume Collet-Serra Directing Survival Movie Described as ‘Don’t Breathe’ Meets ‘1917’
Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton in Carry-On (2024)
Fresh off the success of his Netflix thriller Carry-On, Jaume Collet-Serra has set up his next project, a survival thriller titled Play Dead.

Deadline reports that while the plot synopsis is under wraps at this time, Jaume Collet-Serra’s Play Dead is being described by sources as “Don’t Breathe meets 1917.”

Don’t Breathe is of course the intense home invasion horror movie directed by Fede Alvarez, while 1917 is the Sam Mendes-directed British war movie from back in 2019.

The implication here is that Play Dead is some kind of home invasion movie with a wartime setting, but that’s purely speculation based on what little we’re being told here.

Stay tuned for more on Play Dead as we learn it.

Peter Stanley-Ward & Natalie Conway wrote the screenplay. Nocturnal is producing alongside BoulderLight Pictures, Bad Grey, and Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures.

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce through Ghost House Pictures.

Evil Dead Spin-Off From Vermin Director Sébastien Vaniček Gets Official Title; Set For Release In 2026
Image
Director Lee Cronin's recent Evil Dead Rise proved to be a big success for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures (grossing $147 million against its $15-19 million budget), so it was inevitable that another instalment in the iconic horror franchise would enter development sooner rather than later.

Back in February, we got word that Vermin director Sébastien Vaniček had been enlisted to co-write and helm the then untitled project, which was described as a spin-off. This indicated that the movie would not be a direct sequel to Rise, but all plot details are still under wraps for the time being.

Now, Vaniček has taken to Instagram to announce that the movie is officially titled Evil Dead Burn, and will be released at some point in 2026.

Image
After being one of the leads of the original show, Lucy Lawless is weighing in on her potential Ash vs Evil Dead animated revival and overall franchise return. Having frequently survived her fights with Bruce Campbell's Ash, Ruby was ultimately defeated by the Dark Ones in Ash vs Evil Dead season 3, which also marked the show's final season after being cancelled by Starz.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant to discuss her directorial debut with the acclaimed documentary Never Look Away, Lawless was asked about her thoughts on returning for the in-development Ash vs Evil Dead animated revival. Bruce Campbell on the future of the Evil Dead franchise: two films and an animated series
Image
In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise last year, the Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they’re planning to boost this franchise in a major way, making a new sequel every two or three years. They’re staying on track for that, as it has already been announced this year that Sébastien Vaniček will be writing and directing one new Evil Dead movie while Francis Galluppi writes and directs another – and the filmmakers are given creative control over their additions to the series. Raimi also wants to make another Evil Dead movie with Campbell in the lead as franchise hero Ash, but Campbell insists that he’s retired from the role… when it comes to live-action, anyway. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Campbell confirmed that two new movies are coming our way, and that he’s...

Yet Another Evil Dead Movie Finds A Director As The Horror Franchise Keeps Growing
Image
"Evil Dead" fans had to wait a full decade between movies following the release of Fede Álvarez's 2013 entry in the long-running horror franchise. It seems the powers that be have no interest in making anyone wait that long again. To that end, we've learned that Francis Galluppi ("The Last Stop in Yuma County") has been tapped to write and direct a new movie set within the universe of Sam Raimi's original 1981 horror classic.

According to Deadline, Galluppi developed the idea and brought it to Raimi's team. They sparked to it and now it's officially in the works. No plot details have been revealed but it is described as an original story set within the "Evil Dead" universe. There's also no word yet on casting or anything like that -- meaning, it's unclear if any familiar characters will be included in this new installment. Rami had this to say...

‘Evil Dead’: Sébastien Vaniček Directing an Official Spinoff Movie!
Image
In the wake of last year’s box office hit Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment in the Sam Raimi-created film franchise, another brand new Evil Dead movie is on the way soon!

Deadline reports today that Sébastien Vaniček has been hired by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures to direct an untitled Evil Dead spinoff movie.

“Details as to the film’s plot are under wraps,” Deadline notes.

Sébastien Vaniček made his feature debut with Infested (Vermines) just last year, and it’s clear that Raimi and company saw serious Evil Dead potential in the filmmaker. The new course for the Evil Dead franchise is for Raimi to hand select hot up-and-coming filmmakers to put their own spin on the Deadites, which has been working exceedingly well for the bloody saga.

Fede Alvarez directed his own take on Sam Raimi’s original classic back in...

Scott’s Favorites of 2023

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you must still be around, and I’m glad to see it. These are the films that entranced me the most with their visions of movie magic; I couldn’t get to everything , but I saw what I saw, and that’s that. (Time seems to be set on permanent acceleration these days.)

It was another great year for horror, and judging by this alphabetical, 100% accurate and objective list, one teeming with variety; from Beau is Afraid’s bone-dry hilarious foray into existential Mothering, to Stuart Gordon-inspired Skinamax bodyswapping (Suitable Flesh), and straight tributes (Thanksgiving).

Here are a few of my favorite horror things from the year two thousand and twenty-three:

Beau Is Afraid:

Look, I get it: Ari Aster’s work is very much lump it or leave it. Hereditary and Midsommar are big, ambitious films that instantly found favor...

The Poltergeist Movies Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
"They're here."

With those two words, the nebulous world of the supernatural, the ominous ambiguity of the paranormal, and the deep-seated terror that is inherent in the concept of ghosts were perfectly summed up by 1982's "Poltergeist." Despite the film being over 40 years old, it still holds up as one of the most modern movies about the paranormal ever made. Sure, there had been films about ghosts and hauntings before, but many of these tended to be set in remote, antiquated locations such as spooky old mansions and abandoned homes on a hill. More than even the well-regarded visual effects, the biggest innovation of "Poltergeist" is its quintessentially American suburban setting, the inherent message being that ghosts aren't merely sequestered in places that average people would never dare go; instead, they exist right next to us.

Released during the busy summer of '82, "Poltergeist" more than held its own, making $121.7 million over a $10.7 million budget.

Evil Dead: The Game won’t be adding any new content, Nintendo Switch plans abandoned
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Friday the 13th (1980)
It was heartbreaking when the copyright dispute between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came up and brought any further development of the extremely cool Friday the 13th video game to a screeching halt. Now here’s another franchise video game heartbreaker: the folks at Saber Interactive have announced that they won’t be developing any new content for Evil Dead: The Game, and plans to bring the game to Nintendo Switch have been abandoned.

Here’s the announcement:

— EvilDeadTheGame (@EvilDeadTheGame) September 19, 2023

No information was given on exactly why Saber had decided to set aside any further development of the game. It would be odd if there are licensing issues, because the rights to the overall Evil Dead franchise seem to be rather clear cut: they’re owned by franchise creator Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

Evil Dead Finally Proved The Franchise Doesn't Need Ash (But Still Needs Bruce Campbell)
Image
The Evil Dead franchise came back to life one more time thanks to Evil Dead Rise, which proved that the franchise doesn’t need Ash Williams anymore, but it definitely needs Bruce Campbell. Back in 1981, Sam Raimi brought the supernatural horror movie The Evil Dead, marking his feature directorial debut. The Evil Dead was the beginning of a horror franchise formed by a total of five movies (including two reboots), a TV series, video games, comic books, and more, most of them following the adventures of the franchise’s Final Boy, Ash Williams.

The Evil Dead followed a group of five college students who travel to an isolated cabin in the woods. After playing a mysterious tape found in the cabin, they unleash a legion of demons and spirits, who end up possessing most of the group. Ash is the last one standing, and he continued fighting these evil forces...

10 Most Brutal Evil Dead Deaths In The Franchise
Image
The Evil Dead franchise has gone from horror to horror comedy and back to more gruesome stories, but in every phase, it has featured some truly brutal deaths. Back in 1981, Sam Raimi brought his feature directorial debut The Evil Dead, a supernatural horror movie that introduced the world to the Necronomicon and Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell). The Evil Dead was a critical and commercial success, and in addition to launching the careers of Raimi, Campbell, and producer Robert G. Tapert, it made way for a very peculiar franchise.

The Evil Dead was followed by Evil Dead II, a retcon of the first movie which also changed the tone to horror-comedy, establishing Ash Williams as an incompetent, yet lucky and charming Final Boy. Ash’s trilogy was completed with Army of Darkness in 1992, after which the franchise got the reboot treatment twice: first in 2013 with Fede Álvarez’s Evil Dead and...
