A Very Royal Scandal is a fascinating drama about Prince Andrew's infamous interview (Review)
Image
The 2019 royal interrogation of Prince Andrew has become one of the most talked-about interviews ever. The heated Newsnight interview saw BBC journalist Emily Maitlis question the Duke of York about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his possible involvement in it. The exchange in Buckingham Palace was Andrew's chance to prove his innocence... and it backfired, enormously.

The interview, which the 3-episode miniseries chronicles, was chased down by Maitlis and willingly sought after by Prince Andrew to clear his name and public image. The 50-minute exchange famously backfired for Andrew, after some rather peculiar alibis, and questionable statements -- the fact that he doesn't sweat and that he could perfectly recall exactly what he was doing on one random day from decades ago.

A Very Royal Scandal - Season 3 - Episode 303

Funnily enough, the 2019 interview was dramatized earlier this year. Scoop premiered on Netflix in April, telling the same story,...

The Way | Trailer released for Michael Sheen BBC drama
Michael Sheen
Playwright James Graham has teamed up with Michael Sheen for three part BBC drama, The Way. Here’s the trailer.

Michael Sheen has spent a good portion of his career playing real-life figures, perhaps most notably David Frost in Ron Howard’s film version of Peter Morgan’s Frost/Nixon.

He has also played journalist Robbie Ross in Wilde, writer Jeremy Dyson in The League Of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse, Chris Tarrant in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? scandal drama Quiz and he played a heightened version of himself opposite David Tennant in Staged. He’s about to take on the role of Aneurin “Nye” Bevan in Tim Price’s play Nye at the National Theatre. Likewise, James Graham often writes political plays based around recent events.

The two have now teamed up for BBC drama The Way, which although it takes its inspiration from real events, follows fictional characters.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Ambitious,...

Jeremy Clarkson’s ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ to End With Next Season, ‘No Future Commitments’ for More Work, Says ITV Boss
Image
The next season of Jeremy Clarkson’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” on ITV will be its last on the British broadcaster, with “no future commitments” in the works.

ITV boss Carolyn McCall tells Variety that the forthcoming season of the game show, which is currently in production, will be Clarkson’s final foray as host. The “Grand Tour” presenter has been at the center of a media firestorm over his December column in British tabloid The Sun. In the piece, which is currently being investigated by British media regulator Ipso, Clarkson said the Duchess of Sussex should be forced to parade the streets naked with “lumps of excrement thrown at her.”

“We have a contract. We’re contracted to this [season], so we will do that,” said McCall. “And then we have no future commitments. And we haven’t made any statements about that.”

When asked whether ITV may...

Richard Madeley makes Jeremy Clarkson blunder on Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
Image
Richard Madeley made an amusing slip-up during an appearance on the celebrity version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

The frequent Good Morning Britain host appeared on the long-running ITV quiz series on Sunday 16 October.

In an early round of the game, series host Jeremy Clarkson had asked Madeley: “Which of these abbreviations is used when someone wants something done immediately?”

Madeley was given four multiple choice options, the correct answer of which was “Asap”.

“I shall answer ‘As Soon As Possible’, Chris, it’s ‘A’,” Madeley said. “Final answer.”

In addressing Clarkson as “Chris”, the presenter had momentarily confused him with Who Wants to Be A Millionaire’s previous host Chris Tarrant.

“I’m not Chris,” Clarkson responded.

“Does that happen [often]?” Madeley then asked, seeing the funny side of his slip-up.

“You look young but you’re senile,” Clarkson said.

Later in the episode, Madeley revealed that his wife,...

Michael Sheen’s Best Roles Show Why He’s a National Treasure
Michael Sheen
Michael Sheen recently went viral for an epic ‘pre-match’ speech to the Welsh football team on A League of Their Own – so much so that he was actually invited to address the Welsh World Cup squad for real – but anyone who’s seen a Michael Sheen role won’t have been remotely surprised he had such a rousing monologue in him.

The man has range, charisma, and an extraordinary talent for channelling the characteristics of real people without resorting to impersonation. He’s also clearly game for anything, as the news he’ll be playing Coleen Rooney’s lawyer in Channel 4’s newly announced courtroom drama Vardy v Rooney shows. Here’s our pick of Sheen’s best on-screen performances to date:

Quiz

Throughout his career, Sheen has been unmatched in his terrifyingly accurate depictions of real-life figures, and his portrayal of Chris Tarrant in this ITV drama about...

Image
Matthew Macfadyen is now an Emmy nominee for his performance as Tom Wambsgans in the HBO drama series “Succession.” He also starred in the limited series “Quiz” this past TV season.

Macfadyen spoke with Gold Derby executive editor Paul Sheehan before the nominations about the incredible true story of “Quiz,” the appeal of “Succession” and acting with an American accent. Watch the exclusive interview above and read the complete transcript below.

SEEMark Mylod Interview: ‘Succession’ director

Gold Derby: Let’s start with “Quiz,” which is this fascinating true story, right? I mean, how much did you know about what happened in “Quiz” when they approached you to play Charles Ingram?

Matthew Macfadyen: I didn’t know an awful lot about it. I remember the show very well because it was a real phenomenon at the time. It was on every single night, so everyone sat and watched it. It was,...

Quiz Sneak Peek: Something Here Really Stinks
Sian Clifford
In this exclusive clip premiere from the finale of Quiz airing Sunday on AMC, Sian Clifford (Fleabag) and Matthew Macfayden (Succession) star as Diana and Charles Ingram finally begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This clip speaks to all of us in a time when media, police, and justice are so intertwined that only the brave forge through successfully.

The series tells the story of how Major Ingram (Macfadyen), his wife Diana (Clifford) and an accomplice, Tecwen Whittock (Jibson), who was sitting in the audience, were accused of cheating their way to a million pounds on what was the most popular game show on earth in 2001.

The couple stood trial for conspiring by coughing during the recording to signify the correct answers to the multiple-choice questions posed to the Major by host Chris Tarrant (Michael Sheen).

AMC’s Quiz Show Scandal True Story: Charles Ingram and Chris Tarrant Reaction
Image
“There aren’t any villains in this story, really,” Sian Clifford told Den of Geek about Quiz, a three-part dramatisation of the real-life British Who Wants to be a Millionaire? cheating scandal, currently airing on AMC.

Adapted from James Graham’s play of the same name and inspired by the book ‘Bad Show: The Quiz, The cough, The Millionaire Major’, Quiz aims to shake public certainty about the 2001 scandal and its courtroom verdict.

Though not entirely apologist for Charles and Diana Ingram – the couple accused of using a system of coughing to cheat their way to the show’s top prize in 2001 – Quiz certainly conjures doubt over their guilt. And as Clifford (who plays Diana) says, it also doesn’t follow the British tabloid press of the time by painting them as villains.

It’s perhaps little wonder then, that Charles Ingram (played by Matthew Macfadyen in the miniseries), who...

Stephen Frears at an event for The Queen (2006)
AMC's Quiz Grabs Your Attention and Never Lets Go
Stephen Frears at an event for The Queen (2006)
Beginning Sunday, May 31, AMC will air Quiz, a three-part drama from writer James Graham and director Stephen Frears detailing the meteoric rise of Britain's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and the stunning cheating scandal that threatened to tear it down.

With clever writing, an excellent cast, and inspired direction, Quiz propels you through the episodes with breakneck speed.

By the time Who Wants to Be a Millionaire landed in the Us, it was already a phenomenon in the UK. Historic ratings made it an easy sell to foreign entities, and by starting Quiz early in the development at ITV, viewers get the full picture of went into the modern marvel.

From the earliest stages, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire capitalized on the audience's perception of what they're watching and how it drives them into a bit of a frenzy.

Graham and Frears deftly introduce all of the major players in the scandal concurrently.

‘Quiz’ Review: A(nother) Very British Scandal Holds No Heat in This Stephen Frears Drama
Image
It’s hard to imagine a time when a television show had the power to dominate an audience, so much so that it was on five days a week and was an event every single day. Maybe it’s easier to envision now in a post-pandemic world, or because our love of recent nostalgia still looms large. But in 1998, when “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” became a smash in England, the world looked very different. Personal computers and the internet were gaining traction, but it wasn’t easy to put a question in Google and find an answer. Maybe that’s the problem with watching this narrative treatment of the show’s creation and the cheating scandal that would….eventually….do something to it?

Because you can Google everything about what “Quiz” shows over its three episodes it only illustrates how truncated and basic Frears’ drama is. With each...

Sian Clifford on playing an accused game show cheat: ‘At the heart of ‘Quiz’ is a love story’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Fresh from an Emmy nomination for playing the beleaguered Claire in the comedy “Fleabag,” Sian Clifford embodies a woman caught up in a real-life scandal in “Quiz.” In the AMC limited series, Clifford portrays Diana Ingram who, along with her husband Charles (Matthew Macfadyen), was accused of cheating to win “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” As she explains in our exclusive video interview (watch above), there is more to this story than first thought when it broke in 2001. Clifford credits the script by James Graham, who adapted his Olivier-nominated play. “It is such a fascinating story that everyone in the UK thinks that they know and we are getting to uncover a completely different side of it.”

The actress clearly felt the responsibility of playing someone who is still living. She demurred from meeting Diana until the last day of filming; instead, she studied footage of the couple. “I found the Fiona Bruce documentary,...

‘Quiz’ Review: Game-Show Caper Leaves Big Questions Unanswered
Image
Diana Ingram loves quizzes, more than anything else in the world with the possible exception of her husband Charles and their children. Why does she care about them so much? “I like the idea, in a word of uncertainties, that something can be known,” she explains.

The idea of definitive knowledge should be at the heart of Quiz, a three-part AMC miniseries, based on a true story, about Charles allegedly cheating his way to the grand prize on the original English version of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?. That...

‘Quiz’ Cast and Writer on Reliving Infamous ‘Millionaire’ Scandal During Variety Streaming Room Q&a
Image
In 2001, the game show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” was a global TV phenomenon. And in the U.K., where the show had originated, there was such a frenzy for the show that a large underground network of fans communicated ways to game the system and get on the show. Around the same time, English former army major Charles Ingram, along with his wife Diana and alleged accomplice Tecwen Whittock, became notorious after they were accused of cheating their way to a million pounds on the show. Almost two decades later and the infamous scandal is re-created in the AMC limited series “Quiz.”

After an exclusive premiere screening of the first episode, stars of the upcoming series Matthew Macfadyen, Sian Clifford and Michael Sheen, along with writer and executive producer James Graham spoke with Variety senior editor Michael Schneider in the Variety Streaming Room to discuss the show’s...

Matthew Macfadyen on playing men at the center of scandals in ‘Quiz’ and ‘Succession’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Fresh from season 2 of HBO’s “Succession” in which he plays the hapless Tom, Matthew Macfadyen portrays Major Charles Ingram, the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” contestant accused of cheating, in the new AMC limited series “Quiz.” The BAFTA-winning actor (“Criminal Justice”) speaks about these two very different roles in our exclusive video interview (watch above).

Macfadyen readily admits that he remains on the fence as to whether Ingram and his wife Diana (Sian Clifford) conspired to defraud the show by having a fellow contestant cough at key points in the major’s deliberations over the questions. “The truth is we don’t know. Sian and I would come in every day and say, ‘Do you think they did or not?’ In the end we stopped minding. The interesting thing was their relationship.”

Matthew Macfadyen and Michael Sheen in Quiz (2020)
AMC’s Quiz: The Cheating Scandal Begins in New Clip (Exclusive)
Matthew Macfadyen and Michael Sheen in Quiz (2020)
AMC’s upcoming miniseries, Quiz, takes place at a very peculiar time in history. The human race had successfully navigated through the Y2K crisis to enter into another millennium only to discover it kind of sucked. Amid all the war, terrorism, and strife, a minor scandal was underway in the United Kingdom that would quietly set the tone for the next couple decades of our media-saturated lives. Yes, someone had done the unthinkable and cheated on a game show.

Obviously, Charles and Diana Ingram were not the first individuals to (allegedly) cheat on a game show when they exploited some weak spots in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’s rules. But what makes this story different from cheating scandals before it, and arguably a harbinger for the decades to come, is the outsized media and cultural reaction that followed. Charles, Diana, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and...

‘Quiz’ with Matthew Mcfadyen, Michael Sheen and Sian Clifford: TV Review
Image
Deep into the second episode of “Quiz,” a roomful of frustrated TV executives face some existential questions after watching a man seemingly bumble his way to winning the million pound jackpot on their fledgling hit, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”. Did he cheat? Does finding loopholes in their system actually count as cheating? Is cheating on a game show technically, legally a crime? But again, and most importantly: did he cheat?

This question haunts “Quiz,” James Graham’s 3-episode series about the real life case of Charles and Diana Ingraham, a married couple whose time on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” eventually resulted in charges of deception and conspiracy. (They maintain their innocence to this day.) And yet, “Quiz” pointedly isn’t about finding the “truth” of the matter. Instead, it unravels the human desires, neuroses and outright stubbornness that made “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” such...

Quiz Episode 3 Review
Helen McCrory at an event for A Little Chaos (2014)
This Quiz review contains spoilers.

Quiz episode 3

Quiz might be set in the early 2000s, with all the bootcut jeans, Sugababes and Sir Trevor Macdonald that entails, but it’s a drama about now. Not now-now, but the last existential crisis before this one – or maybe two ago, before climate catastrophe and Coronavirus – the one about the truth.

When James Graham’s play was being written, one consequence of the reality TV boom, fact-adjacent Facebook ads and interbreeding in the worlds of advertising, celebrity and politics was moving its furniture into the White House. The UK had watched a referendum campaign fought by mostly shrugs on one side and custom bus decals on the other. People were sick of experts. News was fake. It was the post-truth era.

That’s the context for episode three, which is mired in the trickiness of facts vs lies. ‘The bottom’s falling out of the truth market,...

Quiz Episode 2 Review
Sian Clifford
This Quiz review contains spoilers.

Quiz Episode 2

“People like us don’t deal with the police,” Diana Ingram (Sian Clifford) tells her husband in episode two, adding with Clifford’s precise comic timing, “this is Wiltshire.”

It’s half a gag at the expense of cosy middle England, and half an insight into the part that class plays in this scandal. Risks are taken either by people with nothing to lose, or by people who have never lost. The Ingrams, wellies-and-Le Creuset types from comfortable backgrounds, look very much like the latter.

That’s partly why their concerted efforts (whether judged as criminal or not) to take cash from Who Wants to be a Millionaire? feel egregious. Like that of Judith Keppel, the show’s first millionaire, granddaughter of an Earl and third cousin to the Duchess of Cornwall, any win by them would be tough to celebrate. Line it up with expenses-fiddling,...

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (2002)
This Quiz review contains spoilers

Quiz Episode 1

In the stage version of James Graham’s Quiz, theatre audiences were polled Who Wants to be a Millionaire?-style on whether or not they found its real-life characters guilty of trying to cheat the ITV quiz show out of £1 million. Acting as jurors, audiences were asked to vote twice at different points in the play. Guilty or not guilty?

One vote always returned a verdict of guilt, while the other returned the reverse. A kind of magic trick, Graham’s play demonstrated in real-time how popular opinion can be swayed first in one direction, and then in another. It was a bit of flash, some razzle dazzle for the crowd. But under the glitz were shrewd questions about justice, fame and trial-by-media. If our certainties can be so thoroughly unravelled by art, can we trust them, and by extension, can we trust the law?...

Michael Sheen went all-in to portray “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” host Chris Tarrant, whom he called one of the most recognizable faces in British broadcasting, but the actor says Tarrant himself was less than thrilled at the casting.

‘Quiz’: Why Michael Sheen Decided to Play a Real Person Again in the Game Show Drama
Michael Sheen
Though his recent roles have plunged him into the worlds of angels and serial killers, Michael Sheen is aware that many people are most familiar with him playing roles based on real-life individuals.

Speaking via satellite at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Sheen explained why the upcoming AMC drama “Quiz” was the project that lured him back into that territory once again. In “Quiz,” Sheen plays legendary British presenter Chris Tarrant, who was host of the original British incarnation of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”

“I’ve been more resistant to playing real people for a while now, because I sort of became so known for it. But this project, I just loved the story. It was so extraordinary. With Stephen [Frears] directing it and James [Graham] having written it, it was just something I really wanted to be involved in,” Sheen said.
