Live-action superhero movies may dominate the box office, but there's something to be said about adapting a beloved hero into an animated television series. A 22-episode season (remember those?) allows for a greater variety of stories to be told week to week (instead of waiting years on end to get a sequel). And while Marvel has (somewhat) perfected the idea of a cinematic universe, an animated series can dive into the wilder, often stranger mythos of these characters without getting bogged down in questions like, "Will this alienate a wider audience?"
With that in mind, it's no wonder why there have been so many acclaimed DC and Marvel cartoons over the years. Some might say these animated adaptations are the definitive source for these characters, perfectly translating them into another medium without losing what made them special in the first place. With an equal representation from each of the big...

Black Mirror has long held the crown when it comes to twisting minds and bending realities on Netflix, but another series, quietly sitting in its corner since 2019, is now clawing back into the spotlight. Viewers are circling back to Love, Death + Robots, a show that many never gave a chance to when it first landed, but fast-forward to now, and it’s gaining serious momentum again.
Love, Death + Robots Is Being Compared To Black Mirror
While Black Mirror built its legacy with 33 episodes full of grim speculation and digital nightmares, Love, Death + Robots went another way, per Unilad. It has animated shorts that never stay in one lane. Some are grim, some are absurd, some are hilarious, and some hit you where you least expect.
This anthology, with Fred Tatasciore, Scott Whyte, and Emily O’Brien lending their voices, has now spanned four volumes.

An animated sci-fi movie with an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score becomes an instant streaming hit in America three months after its $15 million box office. After Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Despicable Me 4, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Kung Fu Panda 4 all ranked within the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2024, 2025 has been a rough year so farfor animated films at the box office.
However, Dreamworks' Dog Man, released this past January, was a modest success that earned an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score and made over $145 million at the box office. Elio had hopes of turning the year around for animated film, but despite its 83% Rotten Tomatoes score, it debuted to $20 million, the lowest opening weekend ever for a Pixar movie.
There have also been several animated films that flew under that radar at the box office in 2025, earning critical praise but failing to attract large audiences in theaters.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (Peter Browngardt)
Directed by Peter Browngardt, this is a charming affair. Modeled after sci-fi B-movies of the 1950s and starring Looney Tunes legends Porky Pig and Daffy Duck (both voiced by Eric Bauza), The Day the Earth Blew Up starts with a UFO landing. The spacecraft takes off on the roof of Porky and Daffy’s broken-down house (bequeathed to them by surrogate father Farmer Jim) just before crashing. It goes on to infect a local scientist (Fred Tatasciore) with a zombifying goo not long after. Soon enough, the goo is in the mix at the gum factory, where Porky and Daffy have taken jobs in a last-ditch effort to save their beloved home from being demolished.

Elio star Yonas Kibreab is plotting his next move. The 13-year-old actor will voice star in Pinocchio & the Water of Life, an indie animated feature he will also executive produce.
The film is a steampunk-inspired take on the classic story of the wooden puppet who dreams of becoming a real boy. Victor Lakisov directs from a script by Mark DeCarlo and Ryan Rowe, based on the characters created by Italian author Carlo Collodi, who introduced the world to Pinocchio in 1883’s The Adventures of Pinocchio.
Per the logline, the film follows “Pinocchio and his sidekick Coot as they try to save his puppet friends from the villainous Faustino—who livestreams their destruction in nightly pay-per-view events.”
“I loved voicing Pinocchio,” said Kibreab in a statement. “The animation is incredible—like nothing I’ve ever seen. Victor is a true artist, and being an executive producer on this project has been such an honor.

When we last heard from decorated creator Genndy Tartakovsky in October, he and his team had passed the halfway mark on animating Season 3 of Primal with two episodes fully completed and ready for television. The anachronistic Emmy-winner set during prehistoric times has been off the air for nearly three years as the Samurai Jack helmer has looked to continue from the bittersweet finale that brought Spear (Aaron Laplante) and Fang's story to an end. However, nearly halfway into the year, there hasn't been a word about a potential release date beyond his previous assurance that a premiere this year wasn't out of the realm of possibility. In an exclusive interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, he offered a new update on how the season is shaping up and when fans can expect to learn more.

If you asked me what the finest adaptation of the Marvel Universe is, the 2010 cartoon "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" would have to be up there.
It was the second attempt at an Avengers cartoon, after the best forgotten "Avengers: United They Stand." "Earth's Mightiest Heroes," from the moment it premiered on Disney Xd, was much better. Developed by Marvel animation veterans Christopher Yost and Joshua Fine with director Ciro Nieli, "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" did what the (sadly short-lived) "Spectacular Spider-Man" did. It took the whole of "Avengers" comics, picked out the most famous stories and what worked, and streamlined a messy publication history into an epic saga.
Yost and Fine, as adult fans of Marvel Comics, were clearly writing with people like themselves in mind. But that wasn't to the detriment of young viewers! What kids got in "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" was a show that respected their intelligence and attention.

Is "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? It was sold as such. It starred a revived Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), who had been an unexpected breakout character from "Iron Man" up through "The Avengers."
The first season was the most authentically connected. The series' "Marvel X-Files" approach got shattered by "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which saw S.H.I.E.L.D. infiltrated and destroyed by Hydra. So, the show pivoted to its heroes going underground. The first season even managed to get Samuel L. Jackson to cameo as Nick Fury twice. But as "Agents of S.H.I.E.Ld." went on for ultimately seven seasons, the crossovers which Marvel fans had expected never came.
Coulson never reunited with the Avengers onscreen. "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was never a priority for Marvel Studios because the show wasn't even produced by it. Rather, the series was backed by ABC Studios,...

The end is nigh for Blood of Zeus, and bloody it will be. Netflix has released the official trailer for the third and final season of Charley and Vlas Parlapanides's Greek mythology adult animated series that teases tragedy, destruction, and ultimately judgement as the Titans return to take control of the world back from Olympus. Following the Season 2 finale that saw Gaia utter the name of Typhon and welcome back the gods' greatest threat, the stakes are higher than ever for everyone in the world. It'll once again fall to Heron and his brother Seraphim to become the saviors that can stop the annihilation of the order Zeus had once presided over. The final battle will commence on May 8.

There is officially only one month left until Blood of Zeus returns for its final chapter. Collider can exclusively reveal that Season 3 of the animated Greek mythology series created by brothers Charley and Vlas Parlapanides has been set for a May 8 release, landing it almost exactly one year apart from the debut of Season 2. The return of the smash hit will bring about the end of Heron and Seraphim's story, as the half-brothers look to fulfill their roles as prophesied saviors of the world. A greater threat than ever looms, however, with the return of the Titans and of Typhon, the monstrous creature Olympus nearly fell too in the distant past.
Season 3 figures to resume directly in the aftermath of the shocking Season 2 finale that left the demi-god Heron dead. Amid the battle of the gods for the power of the Eleusinian Stone, the titular son of Zeus claimed...

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie will invade Blu-ray and DVD on May 27. No special features are listed.
The hand-drawn, 2D-animated, buddy comedy sci-fi adventure marks the first ever fully-animated Looney Tunes feature.
Porky Pig and Daffy Duck are Earth’s unlikely heroes when their antics at the local bubble gum factory uncover a secret alien mind control plot. Faced with cosmic odds, the two are determined to save their town (and the world)… that is, if they don’t drive each other totally looney in the process.
Eric Bauza voices Porky and Daffy, alongside Candi Milo, Peter MacNicol, Wayne Knight, Laraine Newman, and Fred Tatasciore.
“Looney Tunes Cartoons” creator Peter Browngardt makes his feature directorial debut for Warner Bros. Animation.
He collaborated on the script with Darrick Bachman, Kevin Costello, Andrew Dickman, David Gemmill, Alex Kirwan, Ryan Kramer, Jason Reicher, Michael Ruocco, Johnny Ryan, and Eddie Trigueros.

The Twilight Zone is one of the most brilliant and trippy series ever made. Created by Rod Serling, the CBS series is a virtual and psychologically thrilling trip into the unknown. The Twilight Zone premiered over six decades ago, and it still holds up very well as far as the stories and the visual experience go. Maybe that’s why the Jordan Peele reboot failed: it couldn’t capture the same magic as the Serling series did. So, if you loved the trippy stories, inventive settings, and compelling characters in The Twilight Zone, here are some similar shows you should check out next.

2008-2012 was a great yet frustrating era to be a fan of Marvel cartoons. That brief period of time saw the premiere of some of the very best television that's ever adapted Marvel Comics: "The Spectacular Spider-Man," "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes," and "Wolverine and the X-Men." I both blame and cherish these shows for making me a true Marvel Comics fan.
Yet, all these truly marvelous shows concluded prematurely for infuriating bureaucratic reasons. "Spectacular Spider-Man" ended when Sony ceded some Spider-Man television rights back to Marvel. Meanwhile, "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" was canned to make way for the far inferior (and Marvel Cinematic Universe-synergistic) "Avengers Assemble." Lastly, "Wolverine and the X-Men" never made it to season 2 because the show's financing fell apart.
Series writer-producer Joshua Fine confirmed as much in a 2011 interview. Even worse, season 2 was already in production; it had a season outline,...

This weekend sees a big “first” for two media superstars that have been in the pop culture “zeitgeist” for ninety years! Well, that’s one of them because his “partner” is actually a couple of years shy of that (still impressive). So, how can they still be working in a new flick, let alone pulling off some amazing stuntwork that would make Tom Cruise envious? Okay, ya’ got me. They are cartoon characters, so they never really age (any wrinkles can be easily erased). They aren’t from the “mouse house”, rather they’re from one of the main Disney rivals in the short subjects market, though many would say that their home base really had no rivals for consistently hilarious cartoons from the 1930s to the early 60s. And they’ve never been the stars of a full-length feature, though they have had “supporting roles” in a few. So,...

Persistence sure does pay off. Porky Pig and Daffy Duck have been gracing screens since 1935 and 1937, respectively, but it took until now for them to star in their own full-length film, the first completely animated Looney Tunes feature to ever hit the big screen (how is that possible?). The results were worth the wait: The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is a consistent pleasure that should delight youngsters as well as nostalgic adults. It’s a shame that the folks at Warner Bros. didn’t honor their past but instead declined to release the film. Fortunately, indie distributor Ketchup Entertainment has come to the rescue. That studio has a more fun name anyway.
Don’t look for appearances by Tweety, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd or any of the other better-known Looney Tunes characters in this effort, which gives Porky and Daffy center stage. Except that Porky does deserve a love interest,...

The critics almost couldn't be more impressed with the new animated film The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. With its early reviews ahead of its wide release in theaters on March 14, the movie has garnered a Rotten Tomatoes score that's nearly perfect.
On Rotten Tomatoes, as of this writing, The Day the Earth Blew Up currently has an approval rating of 97%. The score will likely fluctuate as more are added, but currently, nearly every review submitted by approved critics is very complimentary of the film, described as a satisfactory watch for both longtime Looney Tunes fans and newcomers to the franchise. While the characters are very familiar and the traditional 2D animation style isn't groundbreaking, the movie is getting praise for proving just how much characters like Porky Pig and Daffy Duck still resonate with viewers of all ages today.

Daffy Duck and Porky Pig attempt to thwart an insidious alien invader in a funny but exceedingly wacky original theatrical adventure. The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Moviegives the beloved childhood icons a 2D, hand-drawn cinematic canvas for total chaos and buffoonery. The screwball plot mostly delights as zany twists run amok until a wild ending that honestly overreaches. The bag of nuts tastes yummy until it doesn't. The filmmakers deserve a golf clap for creativity and stoking fandom's nostalgia, but should have reigned in the hijinks for the bonkers finale.
The Day the Earth Blew Up opens with Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, both voiced by the Emmy-winning and supremely talented Eric Bauza, as youngsters in a precarious predicament. Farmer Jim (Fred Tatasciore) saves the troublesome tykes and becomes an adopted father trying to corral their ridiculous shenanigans. Daffy grows to be intense and uncontrollable while...

We’ve had Looney Tunes for nearly a century. Leon Schlesinger produced their first short Sinkin’ in the Bathtub alongside animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising in 1930. Almost 100 years later, the only Looney Tunes feature films (outside of theatrically released compilations) have been two Space Jams, 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action, the tragically unreleased Coyote vs. Acme, and now the latest offering: The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.
