Night Shift clip and trailer preview Phoebe Tonkin thriller now in theatres and on VOD
Image
Although Phoebe Tonkin was in the 2012 shark thriller Bait and the high profile 2022 flop Babylon, most viewers probably know her from her work in television: she has been on multiple episodes H2O: Just Add Water, Home and Away, The Secret Circle, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Westworld, Safe Harbour, and more. I just finished watching a Netflix series she was in, Boy Swallows Universe, which I thought was pretty great. Now Tonkin has the lead role in a thriller called Night Shift, which just received a VOD and limited theatrical release today, courtesy of Quiver Distribution. To help you figure out whether or not Night Shift is a movie you’d like to see, we have a clip and the film’s trailer embedded above.

Written and directed by Paul China and Benjamin China, a.k.a. The China Brothers, Night Shift has the following synopsis: While working her first...

Night Shift Review: A Single Location Thriller That Takes Too Long To Get Going
Image
Night Shift offers a few genuine scares despite its supporting characters lacking development. Night Shift's twist ending feels unnecessary, detracting from the main character of the film. Night Shift could benefit from a longer runtime to fully flesh out its characters and storylines.

A stuffed bear named "Yogi" that falls off the wall at inopportune times, cockroaches, used condoms, large rats, and that's before we even get to a sinkhole at the bottom of an empty swimming pool bubbling inky black mud. These are all things that greet Gwen, played by Phoebe Tonkin, upon her arrival at the "All Tucked In" motor lodge as the new night shift manager in the appropriately titled Night Shift. If this slew of hotel nightmare visages isn't enough to scream "horror film", the flickering halogen lights and phone calls with no one on the other end are.

Malcolm Tierney obituary
Stage and screen actor who excelled in playing authority figures and appeared in TV shows such as Brookside and Lovejoy

Malcolm Tierney, who has died aged 75 of pulmonary fibrosis, was a reliable and versatile supporting actor for 50 years, familiar to television audiences as the cigar-smoking, bullying villain Tommy McArdle in Brookside, nasty Charlie Gimbert in Lovejoy and smoothie Geoffrey Ellsworth-Smythe in David Nobbs's A Bit of a Do, a Yorkshire small-town comedy chronicle starring David Jason and Gwen Taylor.

Always serious and quietly spoken offstage, with glinting blue eyes and a steady, cruel gaze that served him well as authority figures on screen, Tierney was a working-class Mancunian who became a core member of the Workers' Revolutionary party in the 1970s. He never wavered in his socialist beliefs, even when the Wrp imploded ("That's all in my past now," he said), and always opposed restricted entry to the actors' union,...

'Coronation Street' Gwen Taylor: 'I upped my game for Anne role'
Peter Adamson, Jean Alexander, Johnny Briggs, Margot Bryant, and Doris Speed in Coronation Street (1960)
Coronation Street star Gwen Taylor has admitted that adjusting to the fast-paced world of soap was a challenge. The actress recently finished filming her role as Anne Foster, who was unmasked as the killer of her own son Frank in Monday's (March 19) dramatic episodes. Taylor was last night (March 22) interviewed by Andrew Lancel, who played Frank, on Liverpool station Radio City and praised the Coronation Street cast for the performances they put in without rehearsal time. "I'm going to remember the commitment that everyone had for the work," Taylor explained. "A lot of the women there had babies and young children, but everyone turned up on time and knew their lines - and I was so impressed by that. "I had to up my game. I was used to having rehearsal time and discussion [before playing a scene], so I had to work hard." (more)...

'Coronation Street' killer reveal was a buzz, says Andrew Lancel
Peter Adamson, Jean Alexander, Johnny Briggs, Margot Bryant, and Doris Speed in Coronation Street (1960)
Former Coronation Street star Andrew Lancel has said that he felt "a huge buzz" as he watched the dramatic conclusion of Frank Foster's storyline this week. On Monday (March 19), over 10m viewers tuned in to see Frank's mother Anne (Gwen Taylor) exposed as his killer - with dangerous consequences for Sally Webster (Sally Dynevor) and Carla Connor (Alison King). Although Lancel had known the identity of the culprit for some time, he watched on the night to see the drama play out on screen. Lancel told Pa: "I watched the episode doing the ironing. I'm very proud of it. I thought Gwen was amazing. "As a Corrie fan, someone who has watched it my whole life - to see these iconic characters go to this dark place that Frank got them to was a huge buzz." Corrie's Gwen Taylor: 'Andrew Lancel told me I was the killer'
Peter Adamson, Jean Alexander, Johnny Briggs, Margot Bryant, and Doris Speed in Coronation Street (1960)
Coronation Street star Gwen Taylor has admitted that she had no idea she was signing up to play a killer. The actress's character Anne Foster was last night (March 19) unveiled as the culprit responsible for the death of villainous Frank, her own son. However, speaking on Lorraine today, Taylor confessed that she only discovered the twist when co-star Andrew Lancel - who played Frank - tipped her off during filming. Taylor explained: "It was strange, because I didn't know when I signed on that it was going to develop so brilliantly. But a little while after, Andrew was telling me that he was leaving at a certain point. "I asked, 'What happens?' and he said, 'I get killed - and between you and me, you are very deeply involved!' So he slipped me the wink quite early, so I had the excitement of knowing that the scripts (more...

'Coronation Street' Gwen Taylor: 'Anne's behaviour was terrible'
Peter Adamson, Jean Alexander, Johnny Briggs, Margot Bryant, and Doris Speed in Coronation Street (1960)
Coronation Street star Gwen Taylor has joked that she may need a "bodyguard" after fans saw the twisted side of her character Anne Foster last night. Anne was yesterday (March 19) revealed as the killer of her son Frank and was seen resorting to desperate measures to cover up the truth - threatening Carla Connor (Alison King) with a knife and almost leaving Sally Webster (Sally Dynevor) for dead. Frank's lifeless body had been found at Underworld earlier this month, sparking a whodunit mystery on the cobbles. Taylor, reflecting on the storyline, told The Sun: "Anne has been the nastiest character I've ever played. I might have to get a bodyguard! "Anne's been awful. She's been very unkind and cruel and the way she's turned on Sally is terrible. But at the end, Anne's on the verge of madness. I'm a criminal!" (more)...

'Coronation Street' fans expect Frank Foster killer twist
Coronation Street fans do not believe that Frank Foster's killer is any of the five suspects named by show bosses, according to a Digital Spy poll. More than 20,000 votes have been cast in our 'Who Killed Frank Foster?' survey since Monday night (March 5), when the evil businessman was found dead at Underworld. Carla, Kevin, Michelle, Peter and Sally are the five characters who have been put in the frame by show chiefs, but over half (57.5%) of our voters believe that the culprit will turn out to be someone else entirely. Frank's mother Anne, played by Gwen Taylor, is the most popular choice with readers. Peter Adamson, Jean Alexander, Johnny Briggs, Margot Bryant, and Doris Speed in Coronation Street (1960)
Coronation Street star Alison King has offered her take on the turbulent events which lead to her character Carla Connor having a fresh showdown with evil Frank Foster. Carla confronts Frank (Andrew Lancel) at his home later this week after he wins his appeal for bail and recruits his mother Anne to act on his behalf at the factory. As revealed earlier this year, Anne (Gwen Taylor) immediately starts to make life difficult for Carla, believing that her allegation of rape against Frank is false. She then hires burly thugs to take away Frank's share of the business - including machinery and materials. King told ITV.com that Anne makes her intentions known during a late-night visit to the factory, explaining: "Carla goes into Underworld expecting to see Sally being all goody two shoes. She goes back quite late at night to get some papers. She's (more)...

'Coronation Street' Carla plot has high drama ahead, says Alison King
Peter Adamson, Jean Alexander, Johnny Briggs, Margot Bryant, and Doris Speed in Coronation Street (1960)
Coronation Street star Alison King has promised that there is "high drama" ahead on the cobbles as Carla Connor's dark storyline with Frank Foster continues. Carla was raped by Frank last month and she is currently waiting to see if she will get justice as the evil businessman continues to protest his innocence to the authorities and Weatherfield's residents. Events take a new twist in this week's episodes as Frank wins his appeal for bail before recruiting his mother Anne (Gwen Taylor) to act on his behalf at Underworld. King told ITV.com of Carla's ongoing journey: "This storyline, to date, has been probably the hardest storyline I've ever had to broach, really, in terms of continuation of getting the feelings there and keeping them bang on. It's been shattering, but a challenge." Hinting at what is in store (more)...

'Coronation Street' Frank will be protected by Anne, says Gwen Taylor
Peter Adamson, Jean Alexander, Johnny Briggs, Margot Bryant, and Doris Speed in Coronation Street (1960)
Coronation Street newcomer Gwen Taylor has explained her character Anne Foster's loyal support of her rapist son Frank. Carla Connor (Alison King) was sexually attacked by Frank (Andrew Lancel) after she called off their wedding last month. Next week's episodes see the businesswoman's ordeal continue as Anne is installed at Underworld to protect her son's interests at the factory, making Carla's life a misery. Taylor told TV Choice of the storyline: "In Anne's eyes, Frank can do no wrong. She'll do whatever it takes to protect him. If he tells her he didn't do it, then he didn't do it. "There are plenty of mums out there like that. When the recent riots happened, some women refused point blank to believe their children had been involved. So mums can be a pretty loyal bunch, for good or ill." (more)...

Greta Gerwig on her Fawlty Towers obsession, and a Will Self short story is set for the big screen

Greta's towering ambition

Actress Greta Gerwig as an offbeat charm. Once the queen of the "mumblecore" indie scene, she has now moved into the mainstream with appearances in the Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher rom-com No Strings Attached and, now, taking over the Liza Minnelli role as Arthur's love interest in the Russell Brand remake of Arthur.

Although neither of these films could claim comic greatness, Gerwig attributes her taste for comedy to growing up with the complete set of Fawlty Towers on VHS. "I didn't watch much American TV," she told me. "My dad had these Fawlty Towers tapes and I watched them over and over. When all my friends were quoting off American comedies, I couldn't really join in. I'd just say things like, 'He put Basil in the...

Sheila Kelley Lands Key Role on Lost
For its final season, Lost is bringing back a number of key characters.

But it's also introducing a handful of new ones. Who will William Atherton portray on the series, for example? We have no idea. But the actor will be featured on a number of episodes.

The same can now be said for Sheila Kelley, as Michael Ausiello confirms she's nabbed a recurring role on Lost.

The actress - who has appeared on episodes of ER and The Sopranos, but is best known for her three-year arc as Gwen Taylor on L.A. Law - will take on the character of Kendall.

Previous casting notices described her as an "intellectual beauty with a sharp edge to her wit who is caught committing corporate espionage and has to lie her way out."

Any thoughts on how she might play into the larger Lost picture? When we hear "corporate espionage," it's hard...

Exclusive: 'Lost' retains 'L.A. Law' alum Sheila Kelley
Sheila Kelley
Actress-turned-erotic exercise pioneer Sheila Kelley has found a plum role on the final season of Lost, sources confirm to me exclusively. Kelley — best known acting-wise for her three-year stint as secretary Gwen Taylor on L.A. Law — will play the recurring role of Kendall, an intellectual beauty with a sharp edge to her wit who is caught committing corporate espionage and has to lie her way out. At least that's the info Team Sneakmeister Darlton circulated around town when they were casting the role. For all I know Kelley is replacing an Awol Mira Furlan as Rousseau.
