Love it or hate it, "Sanford and Son" is one of the most groundbreaking American sitcoms of all time. The NBC series about a widowed get-rich-quick schemer (Redd Foxx) living in Los Angeles' Watts neighborhood with his adult son (Demond Wilson) was an undeniable hit during its run. It ushered in a Golden Age of Black family sitcoms thanks to dynamic performances, frank dialogue written from a working-class Black perspective, and its often uproarious scripts. It was such a ratings juggernaut that it's often credited for killing off its much more sanitized competition, "The Brady Bunch."

"It was a groundbreaking series," Eric Deggans wrote in a series retrospective for the official Emmys website, noting that "Before 'Good Times' and 'The Jeffersons' would make TV history with powerful stories focused on Black families, 'Sanford and Son' would explore the prickly relationship between a middle-aged Black man and his son.

The cast of Sanford and Son may have passed away, but their legacy lives on with fantastic performances. Redd Foxx's portrayal of Fred Sanford is iconic, showcasing a wise yet brusque older gentleman with a big heart. The ensemble cast, including Lawanda Page and Don Bexley, brought depth and authenticity to the beloved show.

Sanford and Son, the first mainstream, primetime sitcom in television history with an almost-all Black cast, debuted on NBC on Jan. 14, 1972. Created by Norman Lear, and starring legendary “blue” comedian Redd Foxx as an African American bigot, it was seen as a direct answer to CBS’ All in the Family. But the Bunker family series was a social satire which took its laughs seriously. The Sanfords presented pure comedy, any lessons it taught were intentionally coincidental. The most controversial part of the show, when it first aired, was its lead actor.

Foxx was already an underground comedy legend when Cleavon Little, best known for his role as Sheriff Bart in Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, suggested him for the lead in the mid-season replacement. Raymond Allen, an actor who had memorable recurring roles on classic ’70s sitcoms Sanford and Son and Good Times, died Monday of a non-covid respiratory illness at a long-term care facility in California. He was 91.

Allen’s death was announced by his daughter, Ta Ronce Allen, in a Facebook post.

The actor was best known for his Sanford and Son character of Uncle Woodrow “Woody” Anderson, brother-in-law of Redd Foxx’s Fred Sanford and long-suffering husband of Lawanda Page’s Aunt Esther. On another Norman Lear-created series, Good Times, Allen played Ned the Wino, a neighborhood street character and friend of the series’ central Evans family. Both Woody and Ned showcased Allen’s comic depiction of cheerful intoxication.

Nathaniel Taylor, the actor best known for playing smooth-talking sidekick Rollo Lawson on 1970s sitcom Sanford and Son, died Feb. 27 at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center after suffering a heart attack. He was 80.

His death was announced on social media by his friend, the music promoter Alonzo Williams. According to Williams, the actor was hospitalized on Feb. 23 after suffering a heart attack.

Although Taylor had a few small guest roles on television in the early ’70s – credited as Jita Hadi on The Bold Ones and The Bill Cosby Show – it was his recurring role on the 1972-77 Sanford and Son that brought lasting fame among the show’s still-considerable fan base. His Rollo, a streetwise character typically dressed in the snazziest of hip clothes, was the best friend of Demond Wilson’s Lamont Sanford and forever the target of often-justified scorn and mistrust of Redd Foxx’s Fred Sanford.

As part of the recurring cast on “Sanford and Son,” Taylor appeared in 32 episodes from 1972 through 1977. Taylor’s character, Rollo Lawson, was Lamont Sanford’s best friend and often a target of Fred Sanford’s ire, who believed Rollo was a criminal since he had spent time in jail. Taylor went on to have a role as part of the main cast in season one of the short-lived “Sanford and Son” spinoff “Sanford,” which aired from March 1980 to June 1981.

Taylor also appeared in “Sanford and Son” star Redd Foxx’s eponymous sitcom, “The Redd Foxx Show,” as the first version of Jim-Jam. The series was canceled after 12 episodes due to low ratings.

Any time Steven Spielberg comes to television, it’s always with something different. He honored the anthology series of his youth with Amazing Stories and lent his storytelling expertise to get ER launched, making that into a smash hit for NBC. So, when Fox heard of a series about humans and dinosaurs and Spielberg, it seemed like a no brainer. If anyone could get dinosaurs to work convincingly on the small screen, it was the director of Jurassic Park. What the network couldn’t count on was the full extent of Spielberg’s involvement and in time the series was placed under showrunner Brannon Braga’s control. Braga cut his teeth on Star Trek: The Next Generation and has gone on to do other genre fare, but he can’t seem to repeatedly sacrifice characterization in favor of conspiracy and that’s where Terra Nova fell off the rails.

It looks like good news is on the way for "Terra Nova." The highly anticipated Fox series (which unfortunately could not turn that hype into viewers) could get a second chance to continue. But then again, this could just be Fox's way to give itself a little more time to make a decision. The options on contracts from stars Jason O'Mara and Stephen Lang, who play Sheriff Jim Shannon and Cmdr. Nathaniel Taylor, were due to expire next week. But Fox intends to pick up those options, according to Deadline.com. Although that is room for optimism, it could just be a cheaper way to allow the network to push a final decision to January, after the options would've normally expired. An option pickup does not necessarily mean the network would have to pay the actors for a full season. However, ...

I’ve been accused of being a curmudgeon, and not happy unless I can complain about something. I am very aware, at times, that I can be very critical of things like movies and TV shows that insult my intelligence, but I don’t think that makes me a curmudgeon. To me, it makes me more aware of the manipulation by these folks who run the studios that if they cart out a few explosions and add a few sex scenes, I’ll not notice their stories are so paint-by-number.

So, despite knowing the track record of Brannon Braga (Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise) and his corporate utopian views, I watched Terra Nova each week to see if this sci fi adventure show had anything to offer beyond the sci fi lite that the cable network the SyFy Channel offers viewers.

What a thrilling lead in to the season one season finale, hopefully not series finale of Terra Nova! As the colony prepares for the 11th pilgrimage, Jim Shannon (Jason O’Mara) had a mole to find. The search was on last night and brought for one exhilaration hour of prime time TV! And yes, there were a few dinosaurs to look at, if you still care about that little element of the show. While tonight certainly was not the best episode of Terra Nova, it was worth watching and did its job well preparing us for the finale. “The next time we meet, I won’t be alone.” – Lucas Mira (Christine Adams) was not the big bad threat that we all may have initially thought that she would be come finale night. Then again, finale night has yet to come so let’s not speak too soon. But Lucas unfortunately...

Some criticized the Terra Nova pilot for lacking in character development, saying it relied too much on its flashy special effects to excite its viewers. Others, including myself, enjoyed Shannons, the mysterious events and the overall epic nature of "Genesis."

I don't foresee as much of a divide happening in regards to "Instinct." Don't get me wrong, the sights were still very much for sore eyes, but everything else about Terra Nova's third hour was pretty disheartening.

Maybe it was hidden in the pilot by all the bright colors, but this time around the acting - especially in terms of spoken word - felt amazingly mediocre. Jim attempting to make dinner and help his kids with homework in the kitchen was tough to watch, as was Maddie attempting to ask her father about boys.

Terra Nova just roared onto Fox's Monday lineup, backed by a hefty 9 figure budget from one Steven Spielberg, as the show hopes to garner a loyal fan base of thrill seekers and dino-enthusiasts and become the next Lost. But what the show doesn't have is that big name star that you know from countless other outlets such as Zooey Deschanel, Jane Lynch, Simon Cowell, Omar Epps, etc. So if you're busy putting your finger on actor's faces during the broadcast, desperately trying to place where they're from, here's a cheat sheet that might jog your memory.

Terra Nova’s Genesis Does Everything Right

I’m not ashamed to admit I’m a huge sucker for science fiction shows with an air of mystery to them. That’s not to say that I tune in to every single one of them. I never watched The Event, for instance (thank goodness). I keep my eye out for intriguing stories, making particular effort to ignore any show that tries to be the next Lost. When Terra Nova was announced, I was mostly interested in seeing how well a show about dinosaurs with a TV budget could do. I honestly wasn’t expecting there to be any mystery to it, just a family living 85 million years in the past.

The two-hour pilot, “Genesis,” sets up so much for the series’ first season. What’s impressive is it sowed the seeds one at a time throughout the premiere and then tied...

They mostly hunt at night. Mostly.

Let me start by saying that I really, really hate the fundamental premise of the world where everyone comes from in Terra Nova. Thankfully, the world appears to have been left behind and there’s apparently no way to return, so most of my problems kind of went away shortly into the pilot. That said, I’m still going to complain, but I’ll get it out of the way at the end of the review.

The show centers on the Shannon family, a group of five who live in 2149. They’re supposed to be only a group of four, because apparently having more than two children is illegal due to overpopulation. There’s Jim (Jason O’Mara), the father who works as a cop, Elisabeth (Shelly Conn), a doctor, teenage cliché Joshua (Landon Liboiran), nerdy daughter Maddy (Naomi Scott...

There was a point in last night’s debut of Terra Nova where I sort of threw up my arms and thought, well this does not bode well.

It’s at the point where rebellious son Josh –really, was this the only way to create this character, by giving him the typical run-of-the-mill Daddy issues? –leaves Terra Nova with the attractive daughter of a missing (which is a hint that will see her father down the road) scientist and ventures into High Danger Area. You got the sense –or maybe it’s just me- that things were going to go to hell before the next commercial break (and let us not mention that until Josh appeared, the rest of the “rebellious” teen gang never seemed to be in danger when leaving Terra Nova. So now we know how the cadre of executive producers on this show –I counted 12- will...

I’ve literally been hearing about Fox’s Terra Nova since May of last year, but because of the scope and CGI work involved, it wasn’t until September of 2011 that the show finally premiered.

The concept sounds promising: in the 22nd century Earth is so polluted that humanity has to travel 85 million years into the prehistoric past in order to save their future. The focus is on a struggling family with actor Jason O’Mara (Life On Mars) as the patriarch.

My big concern stepping into this is that high concept sci-fi shows do not fare well on network television. In fact, other than Fringe and maybe Chuck (on its last season), there are next to no sci-fi shows that survive long on the Big 4 networks. Will Terra Nova sink or swim? Here’s my review!

Fox has been touting the release of "Terra Nova" for the better part of the past two years. First announced in May 2010, before a single frame was shot, its pedigree (producer Steven Spielberg) and hype make for the perfect storm of overexposure and disappointment.

But "Terra Nova" does a surprisingly good job of delivering on the promise of destination TV.

Following a group of time-traveling expats, the first episode takes the Shannon family from a polluted, dystopian earth in 2149 to a colony of pilgrims hoping to get it right in the picturesque, prehistoric past.

The trials associated with any family relocation ensue, as does a power struggle with the possibly nefarious colony leadership, attacks from separatists the ever present threat of dinosaurs.

The pilot has a nice glossy Spielbergian sheen, with precise special effects, sparkling vistas and tightly drawn characters. An environmentally corrupt future world is barely explored, as the idea was to get the main characters to a prehistoric past, to re-establish civilization and to possibly change the outcome of the world they have just left. While there should have been less shoot-em-ups and more character development, the questions left unanswered are scintillating enough for building a drama.

The woman who won't stay in her car when told, or searches out the creepy noise in her attic armed only with a wet towel is perhaps the most mocked genre norm in the entertainment world. We've all laughed at the stupidity of people in horror movies, rolled our eyes when they trip while running, and yelled at the screen as some damsel straight from Pilates class abandons the relative safety of whatever hidey-hole the protagonists have managed as she flies into hysterics.

The thing is, no one, barring those who really despise the entire genre, is actually complaining about any of this. It's the game we're playing, and whatever the horror set-up, eventually someone is probably going to have to do something stupid. The film in which the gorgeous co-ed hears a strange noise, knowing someone is after her, and runs out...

A new preview trailer and several viral news videos have surfaced for Fox’s upcoming sci-fi series Terra Nova. This is one of the few tv series that I’m really looking forward to. We’ve seen a few promos for the series released so far, including a preview trailer and some viral posters, but this is certainly the most in-depth preview we’ve seen to give us a better idea of what to expect when the two-hour premiere airs on Fox on September 26th.

It starts out with a view of Hope Plaza, with a female voice over talking about the Tenth Pilgrimage…the wave of settlers that includes the Shannon family, Terra Nova’s central characters.

Brannon Braga, Executive Producer/Writer, prefaces, “It’s the year 2149, and Earth is on its last legs, and scientists have found a way to send people back 85 million years, to rebuild civilization.” As he speaks, there are images of the colonists walking through the portal, of Jim Shannon fighting security and hurling himself through the gateway, into the past.

“Traveling to the year 2149, this is like utopia, it’s like a second chance,” says Jason O’Mara, as his on-screen character marvels at the lush surroundings of his new home 85 millennia in the past.

You may have heard that "Terra Nova" is putting a lot of effort -- really, a lot -- into its digital effects, making sure the on-screen dinosaurs and other prehistoric fauna look good on your TV screen.

But the show is also a pretty huge physical production, as you can see in the featurette below. The show's crew built a massive outdoor set for the Terra Nova colony in Australia, so most of what you see as Jim Shannon (Jason O'Mara) and his family acclimate to their new home is real, as opposed to computer-generated.

"Terra Nova" follows the Shannon family as they travel from 2149 A.D. to 85 million years in the past, where colonists led by Cmdr. Nathaniel Taylor (Stephen Lang of "Avatar") attempt to restart human civilization and co-exist with dinosaurs. It premieres Monday, Sept. 26 on Fox.

One of my favorite types of videos to watch is behind the scenes featurettes, and we’ve been gifted with a brand new one for Terra Nova. We get brief talking heads with the cast and crew, including Brannon Braga (executive producer), Jason O’Mara (Jim Shannon), Shelley Conn (Elizabeth Shannon), Alex Graves (Pilot Director) and Stephen Lang (Nathaniel Taylor). They talk about what it’s like filming in Terra Nova. They have a large portion of the settlement actually built, and seeing it is quite impressive. It makes it feel just that much more real. Some time is spent speaking of Nathaniel Taylor. The cast describe him as someone who helped build Terra Nova from the ground up. He has a vision, and sees himself as the sheriff.

Lang is a very interesting figure. He is a highly educated man, and one with a lot of qualities and features that those of us who first really realized his existence in “Avatar” a few years ago.

I’d actually seen Mr. Lang in movies before, most notably, one of my all-time favorites, “Tombstone.” Who knew that yellow-bellied Ike Clanton was played by Lang? Seriously, I pointed him out to my husband for the first time last weekend while we watched that movie for the first time in a couple of years, and my husband challenged me. Simone Kessell has joined the cast of upcoming Fox sci-fi drama Terra Nova. The actress joined the show during reshoots of the pilot and has appeared in every subsequent episode, according to Deadline. Fox’s Terra Nova has cast Ashley Zukerman (The Pacific) and Emelia Burns (The Elephant Princess) as recurring characters according to The Hollywood Reporter. Zukerman plays Lucas, a major character that is “mysterious and enigmatic” and has a connection to Commander Nathaniel Taylor (Stephen Lang). You can expect to see him in four episodes of the show beginning halfway through the first season. I’m not sure what his connections to Taylor are but, more likely than not, they’re sinister in nature, although Lang came off as a good guy to me even if he is a bit rough around the edges. He could be someone from Taylor’s past who knows toe curling secrets about him.

As for Burns, she will be playing one of Taylor’s soldiers named Reilly. She doesn’t seem to be as important as Zukerman’s character.

Terra Nova is one this fall...

The new promo for Terra Nova says it all -There is no paradise without sacrifice – and it’s a fitting mantra for a show that could be an awesome blending of Lost, The Time Machine, and Jurassic Park.

Front and center is Jason O’Mara as Jim Shannon, the family man that escapes from a dying Earth to prehistoric times with his wife and kids, and you can’t just plop down into a dinosaur-filled area without some military muscle, which is expertly provided by Avatar‘s Stephen Lang as compound commander Nathaniel Taylor.

Just in case people missed the Terra Nova teaser trailer, a trio of pterodactyls in the background let you know that this is not going to be even remotely close to a family vacation.

Terra Nova is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, and arrives on Fox with a two-hour series premiere on Monday, Sept. 26.

I had a chance to check out the first full part of the promo at Comic-Con this year and I really enjoyed what I saw. It looks a lot better than I expected. Abandoning the aforementioned wink-winky campaign for imagery that’s more intense, the Terra Nova promo art puts series lead Jason O’Mara — who plays time-traveling family man Jim Shannon — front and center, with his brood on one side and compound commander Nathaniel Taylor (Avatar‘s Stephen Lang) on the other. Meanwhile, up in the sky, one can spy a flock of very angry birds aka pterodactyls.

The new poster screams awesome and those clothes, wow.

Capping a series of tongue-in-cheek promo graphics advising Terra Nova colonists to not feed the animals (read: dinosaurs!), the first fierce piece of key art for the much anticipated Fox series has arrived — and TVLine has your first look.

The latest round of promotional art for the Steven Spielberg-produced television series "Terra Nova" has been released and TV Line has a good look at the show's official poster. Set to premiere on September 26, the sci-fi series follows an ordinary family, the Shannons, back in time to prehistoric Earth as part of an experiment to save mankind. There, the Shannons join the Tenth Pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, the first colony established in this beautiful yet forbidding land led by its founder Commander Nathaniel Taylor (Stephen Lang). Jim Shannon (Jason O'Mara), a devoted father with a checkered past, guides his family . wife Elisabeth (Shelley Conn); and children Josh (Landon Liboiron), Maddy (Naomi Scott) and Zoe (Alana Mansour).

At this year's Comic-Con, Steven Spielberg revealed that he had a story and writer for Jurassic Park 4 and expected to make it in the next two or three years.

Can't wait that long for some Spielberg dinosaur action? Then you're in luck, as Terra Nova is on its way to the small screen. With the legendary filmmaker among its executive producers, it will debut in the USA on Fox on September 26 and in the UK on Sky1 sometime this autumn.

The series - looking like a sort of cross between Jurassic Park, Primeval and Lost - opens on a dying Earth in 2149 when, in an attempt to save the human race, people are being sent through a fracture in time to form new colonies. They end up 85million years in the past, in a tropical paradise that also happens to be home to dinosaurs.

My first panel of the day was for Steven Spielberg's long awaited sci-fi series Terra Nova, which stars Jason O'Mara and Stephen Lang. The only star among the panel was Lang along with producers Rene Echevarria, Brandon Braga, Kevin Blank and Jose Molina. Unlike many panels, we were treated to the entire first half of the pilot episode. Unfortunately, producer Steven Spielberg was not on hand to talk about the show, but his imprint was evident in the pilot episode.

All I can say is that everything about this show, from the pracitcal sets to the CGI, is Epic. The dinosaurs are amazing, the CGI looks as though a lot of time and money was spent in their creation. The Australian locations look simply beautiful and I can not wait to see more of it. This is going to be one heck of a cool show to watch on a weekly basis.

Sky have today announced a deal with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution securing the exclusive rights to the much-anticipated Terra Nova from Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, Brannon Braga, René Echevarria and Aaron Kaplan. The series, scheduled to premiere in the Us on September 26th will debut on Sky 1 HD this autumn.

In Terra Nova, the planet’s future doesn’t look all that bright: “In the year 2149, the world is dying. The future of mankind is in doubt, and its only hope for survival is in the distant past.”

The dystopian future in which the show is initially set–overdeveloped and overcrowded, with the majority of plant and animal life extinct–might sound like it has all the makings of another in the line of apocalyptic wake-up calls, which have been a mainstay of some of the best science-fiction this side of the known universe.

But with the world population tipped to exceed 10 billion by the end of this century, and the build-up of greenhouse gases threatening the planet, Terra Nova’s 2149 may be a not so distant future.

Only last week former Us Vice-President Al Gore hinted at the need for “fertility management” to stabilize the global population, in order to check global warming.

Earlier today Fox announced the premiere dates for their fall lineup, which has Terra Nova set to debut on September 26. Now, we have some cool propaganda-style posters for the show. The show is produced by Steven Spielberg and stars stars Jason O'Mara and Stephen Lang among others.

We’ve all grown accustomed to the new television lineups featuring epic adventures-in-time-and-space sci-fi shows. It’s nothing new. Our moms and dads followed Star Trek (the various ideations), Doctor Who, Lost in Space, Battlestar Galactica, V, and countless others; it left an indelible impression on our collective psyche. Humans just love the idea of a catastrophe or an us-versus-them dynamic, and throwing in some blazing guns, soaring music, gut-clenching drama and a large dollop of fantasy fulfillment into the mix makes is undeniably attractive.
