‘A Discovery of Witches’ Star, 47, Reveals One Major Detail the Series Changed From the Books
Image
When it comes to adapting supernatural beings for screen, there are a few tropes that seem to be no-brainers: witches and spell books, werewolves and the moon, vampires and blood. When it came to adapting Deborah Harkness' book series A Discovery of Witches, star Matthew Goode breaks down some of the ways that the AMC show deviated from the book, including just how little blood was synonymous with the vampires in the show. When talking with Josh Horowitz on his podcast Happy Sad Confused, Goode said he's approached with both criticism and praise about the adaptation of the acclaimed Deborah Harkness series. He tells Horowitz that when he's asked about the show, it's usually about why they dialed things back. For Goode, he's with the fans on this one, just as curious about the editorial change.

"I'm with them. I was like, listen, I found it curious too, but it's above my pay grade.

Alex Kingston's Bewitching Series Finds Global Streaming Success 7 Years After Debut
Image
A bingeable book-to-television series adaptation is currently proving successful globally with Netflix. The AMC series A Discovery of Witches settled itself comfortably at number 5 in Netflix's global Top 10, according to Tudum. The series is based on the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness. Teresa Palmer stars as Dr. Diana Bishop, a witch and a Yale professor at Oxford who has spent the majority of her life hiding away from the supernatural abilities she possesses. Raised by her aunts, who are also witches, played by Alex Kingston (Doctor Who) and Valerie Pettiford, after the death of her parents, she wants nothing more than to be normal. The series also stars Matthew Goode, Edward Blumel, Lindsay Duncan, and Owen Teale.

The basic premise (both for the book and television series), as explained by Harkness, is what if witches, vampires, and daemons lived among us? And if so, what are their day jobs?...

Highly Underrated Harry Potter Replacement Series With 94% Rt Score Finds New Success on Streaming 7 Years After Debut

Harry Potter and Twilight opened up the apetite of readers for many other fantasy series in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Many book series received adaptations, and A Discovery of Witches is one of them.

The book series also featured Shadow of the Night, published in 2012, and The Book of Life, released in 2014. Despite its stunning reviews, the series flew under the radar but is now finding a new life on Netflix, Tudum reveals.

Supernatural Thriller Series 'The Rig' Finds Success on Prime Video
Image
A highly divisive British supernatural thriller series is making waves on Prime Video. Debuting in 2023, with the second season landing on the streaming platform just last week, The Rig follows a group of workers on a remote oil rig who suddenly find themselves surrounded by a mysterious fog...and even more mysterious supernatural forces. The series, which stars Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen alongside Emily Hampshire (Schitt's Creek) and Martin Compston (Line of Duty), scored a reasonable 67% from critics for its first season, with the consensus reading, “The Rig may not plumb its full potential thanks to too many crude clichés,...

This BBC Miniseries Is One of 2023's Wildest Thrillers
Image
Dark comedy, or comedy-horror, is one of British television's strong points. Misfits, Snuff Box, Jam, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace ... there are many a gem to have crawled out of the twisted and brilliant minds behind British late-night TV that make audiences question whether they should be appalled or enthralled by the Island's unique brand of gallows humor. It's no surprise then, that 2023 brought us a grizzly psychological thriller in the form of Wolf: a shining example of that quintessentially British tone that falls between horrifying and hilarious. Created by Megan Gallagher and adapted from the novel of the same name by author Mo Hayder, Wolf touts an impressive cast that includes both Iwan Rheon and Owen Teale of Game of Thrones fame. If you're looking for a darkly humorous, twisted, and grizzly thriller that coats itself in constant homages to classic horror, Wolf is likely right up your alley. The only problem is that,...

New British TV Series from 2023: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Netflix, Prime Video, BritBox
Image
In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.

Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.

Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

A Discovery Of Witches Season 2 Ending Explained
Image
"A Discovery of Witches" season 2 improved upon the first season, building upon the lore and setting up for a climactic finale in season 3. Critics praised the chemistry between the leads and the show's fantastical visuals, giving it high marks. The season finale sets the stage for season 3, placing the characters at their lowest point and symbolizing the unification of all magical people.

A Discovery of Witches season 2 continued the excitement of the show's first season while also building upon the lore to set up for a climactic finale in season 3. Premiering in 2018, A Discovery of Witches is a high fantasy tale that follows Diana (Teresa Palmer) as she discovers that she is actually a powerful witch, who falls in love with the vampire Matthew de Claremont (Matthew Goode). Growing from a forbidden love story in season 1 to a time-spanning fantasy epic in season 2, A Discovery of Witches was one of...

‘Poldark’ Star Ciara Charteris Reveals She Left Drama School After Female Students Were Groped By Classmates Wearing A “Rape Mask”

Born into a dynasty of talent agents, the Poldark actress-turned-safety advocate grew up steeped in stagecraft. “I entered drama school with a lot of privilege and knowledge of the industry,” she recalls. “It meant I was very aware of what was wrong immediately.”

Charteris left home to join the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in 2013. A decade earlier, Queen Elizabeth II gave the school its royal status to mark her 50th year on the throne. Wolf Review: This Unhinged Pulp Crime Horror Won’t Be For Everyone
Image
If you have to admire commitment – and you do – then you have to admire Wolf, a new BBC detective series from the producers of Sherlock, adapted from the seventh book in Mo Hayder’s Jack Caffery novels. From its traumatised detective to its scenery-chewing baddies, Wolf is fully committed to the pulp crime genre. Don’t go in expecting realism. You won’t find it.

You will find Ukweli Roach as Jack Caffery, a London Di settling in back home after a few years working in Wales. Roach makes a plausible enough lead, and a useful straight man to counter the madness elsewhere. Not that Caffery doesn’t come with his own slice of that.

Caffery’s regulation-issue TV detective Unresolved Trauma is the childhood disappearance of his brother. After a sibling spat, 10-year-old Ewan ran off, never to be seen again. Jack’s convinced that their paedophile neighbour abducted him,...

Tony Awards: A closer look at the two revival races
Image
Revivals have been a mainstay of Broadway for decades. But it wasn’t until the 31st ceremony in 1977 that the Tony Awards added a new category honoring these productions. The nominees for the inaugural prize were “Guys and Dolls,” “The Cherry Orchard” and “The Three Penny Opera” with “Porgy and Bess” taking the honors. Other winners over the years included “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Anything Goes,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Gypsy.”

In 1994, the category was divided into best revival of a musical with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” winning the award and “An Inspector Calls” taking home the best revival of a play honor.

This year’s nominees in both categories celebrate the work of Stephen Sondheim, Henrik Ibsen and three landmark black playwrights: August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks and Lorraine Hansberry. Here’s a closer look at this year’s contenders.

Everyone Who Dies In The Rig (& Why)
Image
Warning! Spoilers about The Rig season 1.The events of Amazon Prime Video's The Rig led to the death of some characters, all connected to what the oil company Pictor is doing in the North Sea. A sci-fi thriller, The Rig steadily builds the tension throughout The Rig season 1 episodes, 1 to 6, culminating in a season finale where all the parties at fault risked exacerbating the consequences of treating the Ancestor as a threat. Finally, however, some of the rig's crew paid a hefty price resulting in their deaths, becoming collateral damage to some characters' work to comply with the Ancestor's requests or Pictor's research representative's vicious plan, which led to two deaths among the crew.

Distinguishing itself from many other sci-fi TV shows where an unknown evil threatens an isolated group of people, The Rig season 1 weaved themes like climate change into the story. The Ancestor soon turned into a force...

Where to Watch The Rig
Image
Today we’re going to look at where you can watch new drama, The Rig and what streaming service you can find it on.

If there is one thing that the North Sea off of Scotland’s east coast has been dominated by, it is oil rigs. There are very few people on the north-east coat of Scotland who won’t know someone who has worked on an oil rig. These rigs are now the main location of this new psychological drama, whose main protagonist is played by Martin Compston. Director John Strickland is no stranger to directing an intense UK-based drama, as proven previously while directing detective crime show Line of Duty, and he has drafted in local actors like Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) and Stuart McQuarrie (28 Days Later) to help place this drama firmly off the cold coast of Scotland. Other less familiar actors like Rochenda Sandall...

Prime Video’s The Rig Ending Explained: The Ancestor, Wave, and The Great Dying
Image
Warning: contains plot spoilers for The Rig finale.

The Rig may have started out like a Doctor Who story missing the Tardis, but it ended up as an absorbing eco-thriller fable. Creator David Macpherson’s series layers sci-fi invention over geological theory to tell a story about the environmental extinction and the survival of planet Earth.

Set aboard a remote Scottish oil rig (is there any other kind of Scottish oil rig?), the six-part series follows the crew of the Kinloch Bravo platform. Following a mysterious tremor and the loss of all communications with the outside, the rig is surrounded by a thick fog, stranding them at sea.

The crew learns that their workplace is scheduled for decommissioning by energy giant Pictor. Tensions flare, and crewmember Baz (Calvin Demba) is exposed to the fog and mysteriously survives what would have been a fatal fall. When Baz starts having visions and ranting about rings and waves,...

‘A Doll’s House’: Jessica Chastain returning to Broadway in a Tony Awards favorite
Image
Eight months after winning the Oscar for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Jessica Chastain has set her return to the Broadway stage in one of the greatest roles in the theatre. Under the direction of Tony nominee Jamie Lloyd, the actress will star as Nora Helmer in a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic “ A Doll’s House.” In their announcement, the New York Times shares that a spring 2023 opening date, theatre, and additional casting have not yet been revealed.

For this reinvigorated take on the nineteenth-century play, Lloyd has teamed up with Off-Broadway scribe Amy Herzog, a Pulitzer-Prize finalist who will revise the work. The production will mark Chastain’s second Broadway outing, having previously made her debut in “The Heiress” in 2012. This Oscar season, Chastain has two high-profile films in contention, too, with “The Good Nurse” and “Armageddon Time.”
