The phrase of “be careful what you wish for” is associated with W. W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw,” yet it doesn’t actually appear anywhere in the 1902 short story. The closest semblance is the line, “If you must wish, wish for something sensible.” That said, the more ubiquitous statement emphasizes the risk of tempting fate.
This one punishing lesson in resisting greed, taking responsibility, and exerting self-control has gone on to spawn numerous adaptations, both faithful and loose. From film to television, W. W. Jacobs’ cautionary tale has touched just about every form of entertainment since its birth.
And if the classic “The Monkey’s Paw” wasn’t enough to stop the allure of wish fulfillment, then perhaps these twenty other stories might do the trick.

Making waves throughout the 90s, The Nanny was a very popular sitcom that followed the life of Fran Fine (Fran Drescher), a boisterous fashionista, who unexpectedly becomes the nanny to the three children of Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy), a wealthy widowed Broadway producer. Though an unconventional nanny at first, Fran finds her own way and eventually earns the love and respect of the entire family. Coupled with other iconic characters like Niles (Daniel Davis), the smart-mouthed butler, C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane), Maxwell's audacious business partner, as well as Sylvia Fine (Renée Taylor), Fran's overbearing yet loving mother - this is an ensemble-heavy sitcom that knows how to balance it all.

Rita McKenzie, known for staging the longest-running one-woman show in theatrical history, died Feb. 17 in Los Angeles days before her 77th birthday. She succumbed to what her family described as a long-term illness.
A powerhouse stage voice and theatrical personality, McKenzie’s 1988 off-Broadway one-woman show, Ethel Merman’s Broadway, became the longest-running one- woman show in theatrical history.
McKenzie had a wide theatrical resume. She played Lita Encore in the Los Angeles premiere of Ruthless! The Musical and reprised the role in the recent New York revival of the show.
She also performed a wide range of stage roles throughout the U..S , including Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes!, appeared in the 50th Anniversary tour of Annie Get Your Gun, played Rose in Gypsy, and starred in a three-year U.S. tour of Neil Simon’s The Female Odd Couple, co-starring with Barbara Eden.

Music icon Ray Charles was not only important for his contributions to the history of soul and R&b, but he also played a memorable role on the popular sitcom The Nanny. First airing in 1993, The Nanny starred Fran Drescher as a lovable former cosmetics saleswoman who becomes the nanny to a wealthy widower's children. Over its six-season run, the show introduced a host of memorable characters and featured many guest stars ranging from modern-day celebrities to timeless figures like Ray Charles. Ultimately, The Nanny elevated itself above other sitcoms at the time for its progressive attitudes and inclusive casting choices.
As a towering figure in the world of music, Ray Charles had already entered the twilight years of his career by the 1990s, but his role on The Nanny was no less powerful. Charles was no stranger to making cameos in film and TV, and he had famously appeared...

With the 30th anniversary of The Nanny drawing near, original series star Fran Drescher has teased a potential movie revival. Created by Drescher and her former husband Peter Marc Jacobson, The Nanny first debuted on CBS in 1993 and ran for six seasons until 1999. Taking much of its inspiration from Drescher’s own life growing up in Queens, New York, the show centered on Drescher’s character Fran Fine landing a job as the caregiver for the three children of a wealthy Broadway producer, Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy). Over the years, rumors of a potential revival have frequently popped up, often fed by Drescher’s own admitted interest in revisiting the property.
In addition to a Broadway musical adaptation of The Nanny, Drescher has also previously hinted at a potential feature film with the original cast returning. Now, in a new interview with Parade, Drescher has provided some hints about what...

In a feature — and accompanying short film — for Vanity Fair‘s annual “Hollywood Issue,” a number of Jerry Lewis’ leading ladies, female co-stars and many other aspiring, talented women allege that the so-called King of Comedy sexually harassed and, in at least one case, sexually assaulted them.
The story and film are based in part on interviews conducted by Emmy-winning Allen v. Farrow filmmakers Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick who, in 2017, began investigating Hollywood’s long history of abuse. They found that some of the most severe accusations involved Lewis.
Among those interviewed for the piece are Hope Holiday, who appeared in The Ladies Man with Lewis the year after she broke out in Billy Wilder’s The Apartment; Jill St. John, who starred opposite the comedian in Who’s Minding the Store?; Anna Maria Alberghetti, who worked with him on Cinderfella; Karen Sharpe, who played the star’s love interest in The Disorderly Orderly,...

It's always a hoot when Linda's parents visit. Unless you ask Bob, then it's a nightmare from hell.
Bob and Linda tried to squeeze their yearly visit with Gloria and Al on Bob's Burgers Season 11 Episode 8 when the elderly couple had a layover at a local airport on their way home to Florida.
Gloria and Al are your typical sitcom in-laws, with their hearing problems, difficulty with technology, and tension with their daughter's husband. And this airport meet-up gave us all of that and more.
Almost everyone married can relate to Bob and his aversion to his in-laws, but Bob's annoyance with Gloria and Al runs a bit deeper than your average Joe's.
It was sweet to find out that Bob's various problems with Linda's parents all stem from his love for his wife.
You know what they say, if you love something, let it go walking off in an airport.

Charlie Hauck, a writer-producer who penned scripts for some of TV’s most iconic sitcoms – Maude, Frasier, Home Improvement, One Day At A Time and, under a pseudonym as a favor to Larry Gelbert, one episode of M*A*S*H – died at his Los Angeles home on Saturday, Nov. 14, of complications from pancreatic cancer. Actress Fran Drescher still remembers the moment she came up with the concept for The Nanny. She was in London visiting Twiggy, her former co-star in the short-lived 1991 sitcom Princesses, and "in a very proper accent, Twiggy’s daughter said, 'Oh, Fran, my new shoes are hurting me,'" the star told Closer during her recent visit to Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family. "I said, 'Oh, honey, step on the backs of them. It breaks them in.'" The contrast between a streetsmart girl from Queens, NY, and a stiff-upper-lip Brit inspired Fran’s relationship with Mr. Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy) on The Nanny. While in London, the actress called her then-husband, producer Peter Jacobson, and said, "What do you think about a spin on The Sound of Music, only instead of Julie Andrews, I come to the door?" Fran, 60, remembers. "In a heartbeat, he said, 'That’s it!'" (Photo Credit: Getty Images) CBS agreed,...

This weekend marked the final box office frame of the spring movie season, with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 kicking off the summer movie season next weekend. While the first weekend in May traditionally marks the start of summer at the box office, the last weekend in April is generally a quiet run at theaters, and that tradition didn't change this year. Four newcomers hit theaters this past Friday, but none could come close to dethroning The Fate of the Furious, which took the top spot for a third weekend in a row with $18.3 million. Which will likely be its last frame at the top. Surprising newcomers Baahubali: The Conclusion and How to Be a Latin Lover both over-performed, while The Circle and Sleight underperformed.

Even while facing a steep second-weekend decrease of 61.1%, The Fate of the Furious still managed to come away with an easy win, taking in $38.4 million against five new releases, two of which didn't even crack the top 10. This weekend it will only face one newcomer in a true wide release, Stx Entertainment's The Circle, with Pantelion's latest comedy How to Be a Latin Lover and Blumhouse Tilt's Sleight also opening in several national markets, but with a much lower theater count. While Fast 8 will likely suffer another sizable drop in its third frame, it should come out on top with a projected take of $18.2 million.
Last weekend, Fate of the Furious actually added 19 more theaters for a grand total of 4,329, which was still nearly twice the rollout of most of last weekend's newcomers. This weekend, Box Office Mojo reports that The Circle will arrive in more than 2,800 theaters, while How to Be a Latin Lover...

I haven't liked anything Adam Sandler has done in years, but he clearly has legions of fans that still love everything he does, because he's consistently one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood and his stuff — while often critically reviled — makes money. Since The Ridiculous Six was apparently a huge success for Netflix, I'm guessing they're pretty pleased with the multi-picture deal they made with him not too long ago, and now we have the teaser trailer for their second collaboration: The Do-Over.
Sandler reunites with longtime friend and former SNL co-star David Spade in this action comedy, which is described like this:

The Do-Over will be available on Netflix starting on May 27th.

Frank Sinatra shines in a story of police corruption that tries to say it like it is -- or like it was in 1968, just before the ratings system came in. The well-intentioned, suspenseful story is burdened by odd censor choices, Sinatra's conservative self-image, and rudely retrograde attitudes toward gays. In a sparkling new transfer with Jerry Goldsmith's jazzy score isolated on its own track. By the mid-1960s, the notorious Hayes Code, the censorship standards begun in the 1930s, had begun to fall away. Films like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Bonnie & Clyde, The Graduate and In the Heat of the Night started pushing the envelope in terms of “adult” content portrayed on-screen. With the advent of the MPAA rating system in November, 1968 a new era of freedom was ushered in. Filmmakers could frankly portray sex, violence, profanity and formerly taboo subject matters. While the aforementioned films are all iconic in stature, one of the key films that pushed the rating system into being is now largely forgotten.
Roderick Thorp’s 1966 novel The Detective became an instant best-seller, a mammoth (600 pages), unflinching look at Joe Leland, a weary veteran cop who finds his legal and personal mettle tested while investigating the brutal murder of a wealthy, gay department store heir.

It's the "flashy girl from Flushing!" Fran Drescher had a mini-reunion with some of her costars from "The Nanny" on Wednesday at the opening night of her Broadway production of "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella". The 57-year-old actress is playing the role of the wicked stepmother in the stage show, and her TV family came to show their support. Clad in a figure-flattering hunter green dress, the gorgeous star posed with her former leading man, Charles Shaughnessy, who played Maxwell Sheffield on the sitcom. The "Happily Divorced" star also reunited with Renee Taylor at the event, who played her on-screen mom Sylvia Fine. Don't the "mother-daughter duo" look just as fabulous as they did back then?! It's been over 20 years since audiences fell in love with Fran's hilarious New York accent and nasal tone -- we love seeing the cast together again! The show, which ran from 1993-1999, followed cosmetic saleswoman Fran Fine,...

If there was any doubt awards season was in full swing, this week’s growing list of screening events featuring lunches, dinners and receptions all aimed at luring Academy and Golden Globe voters should erase any question.
As I pointed out last week, the Academy’s “official” foreign-language screenings began on Monday night with Poland’s Ida and Hungary’s demanding but very fine White God. But that is just the beginning for both those films.
On Friday afternoon at Century City’s Craft restaurant, a private luncheon was held that drew several Oscar voters for an intimate opportunity to chow down with Ida director Pawel Pawlikowski.
White God’s filmmakers come into town next week for similar treatment with a private screening and reception aimed at those same voters. Saturday night, the terrific Swedish entry, Force Majeure, had a packed Beverly Hills screening followed by a Bouchon dinner reception...
