Soylent Green (1973)
Soylent Green (1973) Movie Ending Explained: Who is Roth and What does He Find about Soylent Green?
Soylent Green (1973)
“Soylent Green” is a 1973 movie from the director Richard Fleischer starring big names like Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors, Joseph Cotten, Brock Peters, Paula Kelly, and more. “Soylent Green” is set in a bleak and troubling future. While it may not be a full-fledged dystopia, it certainly borders on one. Due to overexploitation, global warming, and unchecked human greed, Earth’s natural food resources have been severely depleted. Power is scarce, clean water is rare, and the comforts and luxuries people once took for granted are now relics of the past.

The story takes place in New York City, which astonishingly holds a population of 40 million. With such overwhelming numbers, society is divided into two starkly contrasting classes: the wealthy elite and the struggling poor. The rich live in a heavily guarded, walled-off enclave, protected by high fences and armed guards authorized to shoot trespassers. Inside this privileged society,...

Emmys mystery: How often do cast additions to drama series win?
Image
Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.

According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer from the sixth and final season of “The Crown” with the best shot at Emmy glory is supporting female frontrunner Elizabeth Debicki. She played the role of Princess Diana for two seasons, finishing the job started by younger season four cast member Emma Corrin. The characters embodied by predicted nominees Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II...

Ryan O’Neal Dead at 82: A Heartthrob Who Surrendered Himself Completely to Great Directors
Image
Ryan O’Neal is dead at the age of 82 after years of health struggles. His son Patrick announced the news on Instagram.

O’Neal was one of the true heartthrobs of the New Hollywood era, making many who saw him in “Love Story,” “What’s Up Doc?,” “Barry Lyndon,” and “The Driver” swoon. He also was much more than a pretty face, showing a capacity to let the great directors of the era mold him into something so much more powerful than his looks. And his life was defined in some ways, also, by heartbreak and misfortune: the loss of his great love Farrah Fawcett in 2009, the years-long legal troubles of his son Redmond, the rupture of his relationship with son Griffin, and fraught connection to his daughter Tatum. He was a prickly icon, someone whose public statements and demeanor defied people to like him. But the films he leaves behind...

‘The Crown’: Can Elizabeth Debicki win supporting Emmy for playing Princess Diana after Emma Corrin lost in lead?
Image
In 2021, Emma Corrin was widely expected to follow up their Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award wins for playing Princess Diana on the fourth season of Netflix’s “The Crown” with a Best Drama Actress Emmy victory. In fact, 69% of the people who predicted the race on Gold Derby thought this would be the outcome, but the trophy ultimately went to fourth-place runner Olivia Colman for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II on the same series. Now, Elizabeth Debicki and Imelda Staunton, who respectively replaced Corrin and Colman as their “Crown” characters, are vying for their own TV academy recognition, but will not have to face each other since Debicki is seeking the Best Drama Supporting Actress prize. It’s an interesting move, and it just might pay off.

The fifth season of “The Crown,” which takes place between 1991 and 1997, focuses heavily on how Diana and Prince Charles (Dominic West...

Soylent Green (1973)
Soylent Green Predicted 2022, Including Impossible Meat Substitutes
Soylent Green (1973)
Why settle for tacos when Tuesday can be Soylent Green Day? Far more nutritious than Soylent Red or Yellow, the green stuff is made with a secret ingredient that makes it a real delicacy. Of course the line “Soylent Green is people” is now an insta-spoiler meme and trope. But when Charlton Heston first uttered that anguished warning, it might as well have been a supermarket can-can sale promotion. Store shops in the 1973 science fiction classic Soylent Green were so mobbed on Tuesdays that riots started every week in this dystopian vision of 2022.

The historical montage which opens Soylent Green, based on real photographs from the 20th century, shows how industry and population colluded to form a dystopian future where too many people struggle for too little food, gag at the air, and wear masks on a daily basis. The face covering in the montage actually increases exponentially as the...

It’s always fun to peruse the impressive career of writer-director Michael Crichton, whose brilliant, commercially savvy ideas so often hit the mark. He even invented a plausibly credible dinosaur movie. This 1981 thriller may be his least coherent show, with too many screwy ideas and a supporting cast that needed better direction. Yet it has the winning combination of Albert Finney and Susan Dey, and some very original thriller elements.

From VHS to VOD #3
I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.

Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

Chance to Check Out Heston Directing Self in 'Man" Remake
Charlton Heston movies: ‘A Man for All Seasons’ remake, ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (photo: Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur) (See previous post: “Charlton Heston: Moses Minus Staff Plus Chariot Equals Ben-Hur.”) I’ve yet to watch Irving Rapper’s melo Bad for Each Other (1954), co-starring the sultry Lizabeth Scott — always a good enough reason to check out any movie, regardless of plot or leading man. A major curiosity is the 1988 made-for-tv version of A Man for All Seasons, with Charlton Heston in the Oscar-winning Paul Scofield role (Sir Thomas More) and on Fred Zinnemann’s director’s chair. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays Thomas More’s wife in the TV movie (Wendy Hiller in the original) had a cameo as Anne Boleyn in the 1966 film. According to the IMDb, Robert Bolt, who wrote the Oscar-winning 1966 movie (and the original play), is credited for the 1988 version’s screenplay as well. Also of note,...

75 Years of Manic Pixie Dream Girls - Video Supercut
A film critic by the name of Nathan Rabin coined the phrase "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" as a way to describe Kirsten Dunst’s role in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown. He described this Manic Pixie Dream Girl as being "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures." Here's a great video compilation that pays tribute to 75 years of these type of female characters. The movie comes from Flavorwire, and it turned out great!

Ryan O'Neal in Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987)
Ryan O'Neal: 'I Wasn't Trained For Fatherhood'
Ryan O'Neal in Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987)
Veteran actor Ryan O'Neal considers himself a failure as a parent - because three of his four children have struggled with drug and legal issues for years.

The Love Story star is father to son Griffin and daughter Tatum from his first marriage to the late Joanna Cook Moore, while he is also dad to Patrick, with second wife Leigh Taylor-Young, and his youngest child Redmond, from his relationship with Farrah Fawcett.

Griffin, who was born in 1964, is currently serving a 16-month jail sentence for a charge of driving under the influence of drugs, while Redmond is battling substance abuse issues in court-ordered rehab, and Paper Moon actress Tatum, who has long struggled with drug addiction, sought professional help for the use of painkillers following surgery earlier this year.

O'Neal has endured a strained relationship with each of his kids over the years, and only reunited with Tatum in 2011 following years of estrangement.

The 71 year old, who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, accepts that he could have done better as a dad - but he insists his kids can no longer blame him for their struggles as they are all grown-ups.

When asked whether he considers himself a bad father during an interview on U.S. breakfast show Today on Tuesday, he replied, "Looks like it, doesn't it? Sure looks like it. I suppose I was. I wasn't trained.

"(But) these are not children, anymore. Griffin is 45 (sic), Tatum is 49. Who's the other one? Oh yeah. Redmond is 27. At some point they have to take hold of their own existences."...

Comic Review – Strange Kid Comix Magazine #2
Strange Kid Comix Magazine #2 is a special Halloween themed issue from the man behind the Strange Kids Club, Rondal Scott III along with stories and art from contributors Glen Brogan, Aaron Klopp, Sean K. Dove, Neil Camera, Craig Collins, German Orozco, Brian Fyffe, Leigh Young, Andrew Barr, and Christine Larsen. This issue features eight horror inspired stories and an amazing interview with legendary illustrator and director David Hartman who also created the front cover for the issue.

As soon as I finished reading the introduction before I had even laid eyes on the first tale of terror, I knew that I was in for a real treat. Reminiscing about Octobers past Rondal Scott talks about a birthday sleepover he had that consisted of Castlevania and Ernest Scared Stupid and the impact it had on his life. Of course, this sent me into a montage of October horror related memories of...

Soylent Green - Blu-ray Review
Tuesday is Soylent Green day in more ways than one. Maybe it should be Soylent Blu since the Charlton Heston dystopian future pic is making its high definition debut. In 2022, the world is a crowded place thanks to population explosions and shrinking resources. Food is hard to come by anymore and the majority of the population is fed with soy based products that look like crackers dubbed Soylent Red, Yellow, and the new Soylent Green. In the midst of this dark reality, William R. Simonson (Joseph Cotton) is murdered while his .furniture. (read: concubine) Shirl (Leigh Taylor-Young) and bodyguard Tab (Chuck Conners) are out shopping. New York City detective Robert Thorn (Charlton Heston) and his...

New this Week: ‘Source Code’ and ‘Black Swan (DVD)’
Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Hop – Russell Brand, James Marsden, Elizabeth Perkins

Insidious – Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins

Source Code – Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga

Movie of the Week

Source Code

The Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga

The Plot: A soldier (Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it.

The Buzz: Source Code looks to be a Quantum Leap meets Groundhog Day sci-fi action romp. 35 seconds into the film’s trailer, I half expected Jake Gyllenhaal to utter, “oh boy.” He instead exclaims, “no, no, no, no,” as if to echo my thoughts exactly — I don’t want to see Gyllenhaal act the same “stop the terrorist on the train” scene, over and over and over again.

I have a strong feeling that this...

Soylent Green (Blu-ray)
Starring: Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson, Leigh Taylor Young

Director: Richard Fleischer

The Scoop: (1973) The ending of this sci-fi near-classic has been relentlessly spoiled for decades as a pop culture punchline, so chances are you probably already know the deal with this one. But here's the deal anyway: Heston plays a guy living in a near-future New York devastated by overcrowding, poverty, hunger and other bad things. When he investigates a murder, he bites off more than he can chew.

Special Features: Commentary, archival featurettes, trailer

Rated PG, 97 min. | Watch the trailer...

Ryan O'Neal in Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987)
O'Neal Eager To Wed Fawcett
Ryan O'Neal in Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987)
Ryan O'Neal is desperate to wed longtime lover Farrah Fawcett as she battles against cancer.

The couple, who have both been married previously, have been together since 1982 but never sealed their union by walking down the aisle.

But as Fawcett fights anal cancer, which has spread to her liver since her initial diagnosis in 2006, O'Neal is eager to make an honest woman of the ailing Charlie's Angels actress.

He tells ETonline.com, "I'd do that, I would do that (marry Fawcett). She's still a little bit hesitant. I'm working though, I'm working.

"You know she's been married, I've been married. She's said, 'We have a good thing'. But I said, 'You said that 30 years ago, shouldn't there be a sea change?' Maybe there is, you never know."

The pair has a son, 24-year-old Redmond, together.

Fawcett was wed to actor Lee Majors for nine years and O'Neal married twice in the 1960s, to actresses Joanna Moore and Leigh Taylor-Young.

Farrah & Ryan's Oscar Show
Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal are fueling reports they're giving their romance another chance - after being spotted kissing and cuddling at a post-Oscars Vanity Fair party on Sunday night. The couple split in 1997 after a stormy 18-year romance, but arrived at the party hand in hand - and now pals insist they're even planning to wed. The pair's agent pal Jay Bernstein claims Farrah's devotion to her ex during his battle with leukemia touched actor O'Neal, and prompted him to start thinking romantically about the actress. Bernstein says, "Farrah's changed a lot in the past few years. Her acting career has become less important to her than her family. She's been right there for Ryan." And O'Neal's second wife Leigh Taylor-Young admits Farrah is just what Ryan needs in his life right now. She says, "He's like a wild stallion and he needs someone larger than life - someone like Farrah - to reel him in."...
