Christopher Nolan's 2023 biopic "Oppenheimer" was such a refreshing outlier in the world of blockbusters. Made for $100 million, the film unexpectedly made almost a billion dollars at the box office, startling everyone. This was rare, as Nolan's film was no crowd-pleasing action spectacular, but a biopic, and an incredibly downbeat and heady one at that. It dealt with the bleak morals of inventing a device that can destroy all life and the petty egos of the men who would rather bicker about security clearances than face those morals. Cillian Murphy won an Academy Award for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer, and the film won Best Picture. It was a hit largely because it came out the same day as Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," and many audiences rushed to make it an ironic double feature.
It was also likely a hit because the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer has fascinated people since the 1940s.

All of these actors are also extremely well-known faces from the industry, including Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, and more.
Christopher Nolan is currently busy perfecting his star cast for his upcoming movie, ‘The Odyssey.’ The feature film is an adaptation of the Greek epic poem written by Homer. The storyline revolves around the Greek King Odysseus and his struggle-filled journey to his home in Ithaca from the Trojan War. On that 10-year journey, Odysseus had to face many hurdles and interruptions from many people (including Gods). The plot also covers how his wife and son deal with aggressive suitors while the King has been away from his kingdom.
Nolan’s feature project already confirmed the lead star cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has added four more names to its cast, including three stars the “Oppenheimer” filmmaker has worked with previously.
The Wrap has learned that Himesh Patel (“Station Eleven”), Elliot Page (“The Umbrella Academy”), Bill Irwin (“Legion”), and Samantha Morton (“Minority Report”) have all joined the cast of Nolan’s forthcoming adaptation of Homer’s epic Ancient Greek poem. The film’s latest additions join an ensemble that already includes Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, and Jon Bernthal.
Earlier this week, Benny Safdie also signed on to star in “The Odyssey,” following his turn as Edward Teller in “Oppenheimer.” The new film marks a reunion, though, between not just Safdie and Nolan, but also the filmmaker and multiple past collaborators, including Damon, Pattinson, and Hathaway. Having appeared in Oppenheimer, Benny Safdie is working with Christopher Nolan again in the latter’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey.
It says a great deal about the anticipation surrounding Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, that respected Hollywood trade outlets are speculating over which specific Mediterranean islands the director is likely to film on.
Will he film on the Egadi archipelago, or perhaps the Eiolian islands? Variety's sources have suggested they’re potential locations, as is Favignana in Sicily.
Islands aside, there’s the casting to think about. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Benny Safdie, a talented filmmaker and director, is again teaming with Nolan on his new opus. Safdie, you may recall, played the likeably brusque physicist Edward Teller in 2023’s Oppenheimer; his casting in The Odyssey means he’ll be joining the likes of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron in the ensemble.

J. Robert Oppenheimer died of throat cancer at 62. Oppenheimer died in 1967, four years after the events of Christopher Nolan's 2023 epic biographical movie. The theoretical physicist's legacy has shifted after his death, sparking debate on his character.
Oppenheimer depicts the life and career of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who aided in the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II, but the movie doesn't explain when and how he died. The epic biographical thriller drama, directed and written by Christopher Nolan, follows Oppenheimer's life from his studies at the University of Cambridge in the mid-1920s to President Lyndon B. Johnson awarding him the Enrico Fermi Award, a lifetime achievement scientific medal, in 1963. Ultimately, Oppenheimer's timeline isn't linear as it jumps back and forth between different periods but still never shows Oppenheimer's death.

Oppenheimer costume designer Ellen Mirojnick took audiences back to the 1940s with her two- and three-piece suits worn by Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer and the other scientists on the Manhattan Project. But the fashion in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic also stayed impressively timeless, which Mirojnick reveals was one of the director’s early requests.
“One of Chris’ first notes was, although we’re traveling through many different periods, can we find a way to make it accessible to a modern audience?” Mirojnick tells THR, adding that she studied the varied silhouettes of different time periods in her research.
Coupled with Murphy’s undisclosed weight loss for the role, Oppenheimer’s look is fashioned after David Bowie’s Thin White Duke era, that “’70s American life,” says Mirojnick. “His exaggerated silhouette at that time was Cillian’s first entrée into Oppenheimer. This article contains Oppenheimer spoilers.
It can be said that Christopher Nolan has always known how to end a movie. From Leonard Shelby concluding his journey where it began and asking “now where was I?” in Memento to the topper that wouldn’t stop spinning in Inception, this is a filmmaker who looks for the most potent image that will burrow its way into audiences’ heads.
Yet the final scene of his most ambitious film to date is something more impressive, if altogether disquieting. Oppenheimer definitely implants a grim idea in the viewer’s mind, but it does so by giving the uncanny impression that we are seeing it through J. Robert Oppenheimer’s eyes first. Standing by the duck pond that Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) has been consigned to by posterity, and where Oppie will be joining him in exile sooner than he realizes, the man credited with fathering...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a towering achievement. Ambitious, thoughtful, and often frightening, it’s one part biopic, one part cautionary tale, and one part lament for a world in which humanity’s most brilliant moments of creation are also inevitable acts of destruction. Grounded in a sensational central performance from star Cillian Murphy and an unflinchingly vivid directorial vision, it snagged 13 Oscar nominations and deserved every one. It’s not perfect, by any means, but it’s a sprawling, cerebral reminder of what blockbuster filmmaking looks like on almost every level. It’s probably going to win Best Picture, and it’s hard to argue that any other movie that came out last year can—or likely should—beat it.

Christopher Nolan is well known for his intense attention to detail, working on and researching his projects for years before they’re finally ready to go before cameras. His 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer (remember to buy it on physical media folks) is no different; in fact, it may be his most meticulously constructed movie to date. Using the biography “American Prometheus” as his template, Nolan clearly went to great lengths to depict a crucial handful of years in the complicated life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, whom Nolan has said is the most important human who ever lived… for better or worse.
If you’ve seen the film, and based on its incredible $900 million worldwide box office haul, you have, you might’ve wondered just how close to reality Nolan’s film truly is. Well, you can stop wondering because we’re about to give you a quick history lesson and tell you what really happened to Oppenheimer.

In a new interview with Variety, the younger Safdie confirmed he and his brother are no longer looking to collaborate on new projects.
Benny Safdie had a pretty good 2023, all things considered. He starred in two of the best films of the year, as physicist Edward Teller in Oppenheimer and loveable dad in Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret. The Curse, the deeply weird black comedy he starred in alongside Emma Stone and Nathen Fielder, remains one of the buzzier TV hits in a pretty crowded marketplace.
On the directorial side, though, things seem to have taken a back foot. After the critical success of Good Time and Uncut Gems, Benny and his brother Josh’s next project, a sports memorabilia movie starring Adam Sandler and Megan Thee Stallion, has apparently been shelved for now, and in a recent Variety interview Benny seemed to confirm the pair are taking a creative break.

This article contains spoilers for The Curse episode 4.
A24 and Showtime series The Curse features an impressive roster of actors.
Leading the ensemble of this black comedy is Academy Award-winner Emma Stone, whose property developer Whitney Siegel is an “Eat. Pray. Love.” neon sign brought to life – a well-meaning upper class white woman barely repressing the exploitative impulses roiling underneath. Then there’s series co-creator Benny Safdie, who is fresh off a scene-stealing portrayal as hydrogen bomb creator and certified hater Edward Teller in Oppenheimer. His sleazy reality show producer Dougie Schecter is something to behold, swaggering around with ’90s Howard Stern locks, a fistful of garish rings, and a questionable blood-alcohol content.
The most beguiling member of The Curse cast, however, is co-creator, co-writer, and co-lead Nathan Fielder as Asher Siegel. Though a towering name in television comedy, the Canadian performer has not traditionally been known for his acting roles.

After the success and acclaim of Uncut Gems, Adam Sandler was confirmed to be reuniting filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie for a new movie, with filming to commence in summer 2023. Sandler now reveals that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes derailed these plans, and since filming was supposed to take place during live baseball games, it's not currently clear when production will actually be able to start. The untitled Netflix film is set in the world of high-end sports card collecting, with Megan Thee Stallion expected to star alongside Sandler.
Adam Sandler reveals the full extent to which his upcoming collaboration with the directors of Uncut Gems has been delayed due to the strikes. 2017's Good Time announced Benny and Josh Safdie as filmmakers to watch, a designation they further proved with 2019's Uncut Gems, which earned Sandler the best reviews of his career. Emma Stone's new TV show, The Curse, has received an 80 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, falling slightly below her previous show, Maniac. Critics have praised The Curse for its genre-bending elements, blending cringe comedy with contemplative character study and undertones of horror. The Curse could continue the hot streak of its cast, including Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, and Benny Safdie, who have all received acclaim for their previous work.
The Curse's Rotten Tomatoes score grades Emma Stone's first TV show in five years. Stone is one of the most singular actresses of her generation, known for her versatile performances in a variety of film genres. However, over her illustrious career, Stone has also starred in a few TV shows, including some small television roles early in her career and two starring roles after becoming an established actress. The latter include the 2018 Netflix miniseries Maniac and an upcoming comedy series called The Curse.

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder have their sledgehammers ready, but they might not only be breaking down walls in their new Showtime and A24 comedy “The Curse.” The studios have released the first trailer for their genre-defying new series, set to premiere on Nov. 10 on Paramount+ and air Nov. 12 on Showtime.
Stone and Fielder play a married couple, Whitney and Asher, who flip houses on a new show called “Flipanthropy,” seemingly similar to real-life HGTV home renovation shows like “Fixer Upper.” Whitney and Asher’s “Flipanthropy” series is produced by a character named Dougie, played by co-creator Benny Safdie, who harbors some secrets.
Despite the couple’s big break and their hopes to have a child, all is not well for the house-flipping duo. Whitney and Asher, based in Española, N.M., are soon faced with a mysterious curse that will “disturb the relationship.”

Understandably, there has been a lot more interest in the life and times of J. Robert Oppenheimer after Christopher Nolan's biographical drama has taken cinemas by storm. Nolan's all-encompassing film, based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's Pulitzer-winning novel "American Prometheus," gives a detailed reconstruction of what it was like to head the team that would go on to create the atomic bomb. In all likelihood, "Oppenheimer" will stand as the definitive account of the Manhattan Project and its aftermath.
Over the years, there have been multiple attempts to tell Oppenheimer's story, including the 1989 war drama "Fat Man and Little Boy" starring Paul Newman and John Cusack. The modern stage retelling, "Doctor Atomic," by the Metropolitan Opera even delves into the physicist's private life while still managing to deliver a show-stropping recreation of the first detonation of the A-bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Once the "Oppenheimer" hype dies down, you'll likely hear more of that nagging criticism of the movie being about men talking in offices and classrooms. There's no doubt large chunks of the film's three-hour runtime focus on Cillian Murphy's J. Robert Oppenheimer conversing with political leaders and his colleagues as they work their way towards creating the atom bomb. But by his own admission, Christopher Nolan's approach to filmmaking almost necessitates this kind of verbosity. As the filmmaker previously told BAFTA:
"I chose to take the path of incorporating that desire for a layered approach into the narrative itself, into the story. And so I've made films that have some ambiguity to them, or some layering to them narratively, so that if you see them a second time you're going to watch them a slightly different way. And that was my approach. There are other filmmakers who approached...

"Oppenheimer" is built around the Trinity Test, the famous 1945 event where J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team of scientists tested an atomic bomb for the first time. This historic moment is the fulcrum on which Christopher Nolan's brilliant, horrifying film turns. Everything prior to the test focuses on Oppenheimer's passion for physics and beating the Nazi's to the punch, while everything after shows how the titular physicist became haunted by his own work and was ostracized by many of his former colleagues and allies as he spoke out against nuclear proliferation.
Nolan told Entertainment Tonight that his film "has a lot to do with the consequences of actions — sort of going ahead and doing these things and then having to deal with the consequences for years afterwards." It's an understatement to say that the consequences of Oppenheimer's work were monumental. The result of the Manhattan Project, which he led,...

At 180 minutes, it’s not improbable to think there are no deleted scenes for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Sometimes, fans look forward to home release materials getting packed with extras, but Cillian Murphy is here to burst the bubble, saying what you see is what you get when it comes to Nolan’s latest opus.
Speaking with Collider, Murphy said there’s a meticulous method to Nolan’s madness, leaving no opportunity for scenes to fall onto the cutting room floor. “There’s no deleted scenes in Chris Nolan movies,” Murphy commented. “That’s why there are no DVD extras on his movies because the script is the movie. He knows exactly what’s going to end up – he’s not fiddling around with it trying to change the story. That is the movie.”
Murphy’s well-versed in Nolan’s ways after teaming up with the acclaimed director on multiple feature-length projects.

No one, besides maybe Quentin Tarantino, has done more to promote shooting on film in our current moment than Christopher Nolan. With "Oppenheimer," the filmmaker outdid himself, shooting his epic three-hour biopic on IMAX 70mm and creating a reel of film that measured 11 miles in length.
As well as promoting film as a viable format in a time where digital dominates movie-making, "Oppenheimer" had its IMAX run extended, seemingly proving that Nolan's efforts were worthwhile. The director even had an entirely new black and white IMAX film invented specifically for his adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's J. Robert Oppenheimer biography, "American Prometheus." Whereas previously, Nolan had used IMAX for specific scenes in his films, the entirety of "Oppenheimer" was shot on large-format film (on IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film), which not only proved useful in showcasing such triumphs as recreating a nuclear explosion without the...

The following contains spoilers for Oppenheimer, in theaters now.
One of the most glaring aspects of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is it's a very male-driven film. Of course, it sticks to history as best it can, and as the cinematic narrative allows. But it's also testament to the time: the 1940s was defined as an era where men wielded power and influence all across the world.
To that point, the movie does dissect the patriarchy and men playing gods in terms of weapons, the military and war. It also examines how toxic men facilitated harmful politics decades ago -- a problem that's ongoing to this very day. Interestingly, as much as the film focuses on self-interested people like Cillian Murphy's titular character and Robert Downey Jr.'s Lewis Strauss, there is a powerful feminist missive from a character who comes to the fore in the final act.

Benny Safdie's pivot from directing to acting shows promise, as his performance in Oppenheimer is being praised by critics. Safdie's dedication to his role in Oppenheimer, including months of preparation and character immersion, demonstrates his potential as a great actor. While Safdie's shift may hinder his progression as a director, his success in Oppenheimer suggests that his gamble on acting may pay off.
Benny Safdie has gambled on himself at a crucial moment in his career, but his performance in Oppenheimer has proven that it may well pay off. As one half of the filmmaking duo The Safdie Brothers, alongside his sibling Josh, Benny Safdie has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years with the massive success of the pair’s recent directorial projects. 2017’s Good Time and 2019’s Uncut Gems, two gritty, nerve-rattling crime dramas helmed by major actors, have seen the Safdie brothers go from well-reviewed indie darlings to household names.

David Hill played a key role in Lewis Strauss' Senate hearing in Oppenheimer, exposing Strauss' betrayal and solidifying him as the film's villain. After the hearing, Hill moved into the private sector but remained involved in studying the social and political consequences of nuclear weapons. Hill went on to have a successful career, founding and leading scientific research firms, and was highly respected in the field of nuclear physics. He passed away in 2008, leaving behind a strong scientific and family legacy.

Benny Safdie portrays Hungarian-American theoretical physicist Edward Teller in "Oppenheimer," the man largely responsible for the creation of the hydrogen bomb. Director Christopher Nolan instructed Safdie to not groom his eyebrows, thus allowing him to achieve a look closer to that of the real-life Teller. This demonstrates Nolan's dedication to achieving authenticity in Oppenheimer, with the film generally regarded to be mostly accurate.
Oppenheimer star Benny Safdie recalls getting a very specific character note for his portrayal of Edward Teller. To pluck, or not to pluck. That was the question on Benny Safdie’s mind in preparing to play theoretical physicist Edward Teller in “Oppenheimer.”
Teller, the Budapest-born “father of the hydrogen bomb,” joined J. Robert Oppenheimer in Los Alamos to develop the earlier atomic bomb. He was notorious for his thick Austro-Hungarian accent and is rumored to have even inspired Peter Sellers’ title character in Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove.” And then, there were, of course, Teller’s unkempt, thick eyebrows, which Safdie said are all his.
Speaking with Vulture, Safdie said, “I am proud to say that it’s all my eyebrows. Teller had the best eyebrows.”
The “Uncut Gems” co-director and “Licorice Pizza” star added that Nolan really wanted Safdie to commit to the bit. “Every once in a while I have a straggler that I’ll just pluck out, cause it looks a little too crazy.

“Good Time” and “Uncut Gems” director Benny Safdie expands his acting career with a prominent supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” He plays Edward Teller, the real-life theoretical physicist known as “the father of the hydrogen bomb.” Teller joined Oppenheimer to work on the atomic bomb in Los Alamos, N.M., focusing on nuclear implosion and uranium hydride research. He was born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, and had a thick accent, which presented Safdie with one of his biggest acting challenges.
“The accent was something I was so nervous about,” Safdie recently told Vulture. “I remember Chris asking me, ‘How’s the accent coming?’ And I’m just like, ‘Oh my God, how am I going to accomplish this?’ I didn’t know if he was going to want me to do it. But he sent me all of these interviews and we talked about how Teller speaks and who he is.

Oppenheimer doesn't provide explicit details about what happened to Edward Teller after the movie, but he earned the title of "The Father of the Hydrogen Bomb." Teller attempted to repair his relationship with J. Robert Oppenheimer, but it wasn't enough to repair their broken friendship. Following the Oppenheimer hearing, Teller faced ostracism from the scientific community, but he continued advocating for nuclear technology until his death in 2003.
Oppenheimer has a huge cast of real-life scientists, including Hungarian physicist Edward Teller, but what happens to Teller after the credits roll isn't quite clear. Midway through Oppenheimer, Teller threatens to leave The Manhattan Project because he isn't being listened to, as he thinks he should focus on working on a bomb made of Hydrogen. To keep him from leaving, Oppenheimer allows Teller to continue his research on the potential H-bomb, but that's the beginning of...

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Oppenheimer.
Rami Malek's character, Dr. Hill, exposes Lewis Strauss' scheme against Oppenheimer, but the film doesn't explain how he knew about it. The film focuses on Oppenheimer but also delves into Strauss' perspective, using a dual color palette to differentiate their stories. The Senate confirms that Hill was aware of Strauss' sabotage, showing that other individuals accused Strauss of targeting Oppenheimer as well.
Oppenheimer's biggest twist comes from Rami Malek's Dr. David L. Hill, but the film doesn't reveal how he knew exactly about Lewis Strauss' scheming. Christopher Nolan's second historical project is based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, and tackles J. Robert Oppenheimer's involvement in the infamous Manhattan Project. Cillian Murphy plays Oppenheimer's titular character, but aside from only showing his point of view, the movie also tackles a string of events from Strauss' perspective.

“Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds” is the famous quote from the Bhagavad Gita that physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer spoke upon witnessing the first denotation of a nuclear device, as the world entered the new era of nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s epic drama about Oppenheimer, his work on the Manhattan Project, and his treatment after the war. The biographical drama starts like a historical thriller and ends like a profound warning to the world, all set against the sweep of history that changed the world.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan’s epic film in fact opens with a reminder of that myth of the man who stole...

Edward Teller and J. Robert Oppenheimer, two renowned scientists who shared a common vision for atomic research, found themselves at odds due to their differing ethical concerns. Among the annals of scientific feuds, such as the disagreements between Einstein and Bohr or Dawkins and Gould, the clash between Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, and Edward Teller, known as the father of the Hydrogen bomb, played a significant role in shaping the course of history.
In Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, Oppenheimer, which needs no further explanation about its grand portrayal of the consequences of the atomic explosion in Oppenheimer’s life, we are exposed to the intricate relationship between Hungarian physicist Edward Teller and Robert J. Oppenheimer. Although Nolan didn’t grant Edward Teller’s character (played by Benny Safdie) extensive screen time to fully portray the conflicting relationship, he skillfully alluded to their differences of opinion, which later...

Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" begins with two on-screen titles showing the definitions between fission and fusion. For the layman or average moviegoer, the definitions serve as an explanation about the differences between two ways of achieving nuclear power. They also layout the ways in which the entire film is going to be structured, split in two by color and black-and-white sequences that divide Nolan's epic biography into Oppenheimer's subjective point-of-view and the objective forces swirling around him. The sequences in color paint Oppenheimer as somewhat of a heroic figure that helped this nation win World War II with the creation of the atomic bomb; the black-and-white sections show the famed scientist as a victim of government bureaucracy bullied by a system that no longer needs him.
Serving as the basis for "Oppenheimer," the book "American Prometheus" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin also begins with a quote. Taken from...

Decades before Christopher Nolan set his sights on a movie about J. Robert Oppenheimer, a science-obsessed BBC executive ventured to America in 1979 to make a $1.5 million TV show about the father of the atom bomb.
Peter Goodchild began his career at the BBC in radio drama, but eventually migrated to the storied “Horizon” science unit to put his chemistry degree to some use. The division began experimenting with factual dramas in the 1970s, and after delivering a hit series on French-Polish physicist Marie Curie, Goodchild set his sights on the New York-born Oppenheimer.
“I’d seen a play on J. Robert Oppenheimer at the Hampstead Theatre Club way back in 1966,” the 83-year-old tells Variety from his home in Exeter, southwest England, where his Zoom background reveals a room teeming with books on heaving shelves.
“It was an amazing story, and I’d always wanted to do it,” Goodchild continues. “Someone...
