I have a long and complicated history with Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher. As someone who's sunk hundreds of hours into the video games and read all the books, I've often vacillated between disappointment and frustration when watching the television series, which tends to toss out wide swathes of its source material or even directly contradict its spirit. But that doesn't mean I'm thoughtless with my criticism; on the contrary, I love to do a good deep dive on this series and dissect what's working and what isn't. That's why, unlike many Henry Cavill-obsessed fans who were too bitter over the actor's departure to give The Witcher season 3 a proper shake, I generally thought it was a huge step in the right direction after the enormous missteps of season 2. But that doesn't mean I've forgotten all the times The Witcher burned me in the past.

You may not remember that the original "X-Men" cartoon from 1992 kicked off a flurry of '90s Marvel cartoons sometimes known as "The Marvel Animated Universe." This universe is less well known than the contemporary DC Animated Universe ("Batman: The Animated Series" up to "Justice League Unlimited"). Showtime's House of Lies is adding a funny pair to its ranks. The Neighbors alum Simon Templeman and Mom's Kevin Pollak have booked guest roles on the Don Cheadle comedy, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Templeman will play Teddy, the smart and offbeat CEO of a pharmaceutical company, while Pollak is set as Joe Gideon, a private detective with a CIA background whom Marty (Cheadle) hires. A family sitcom, The Neighbors follows the Weaver clan as they try to live in a beautiful gated community that's filled with alien visitors from the planet Zabvron. Pms takes on a whole new meaning in "The Neighbors" episode "Man, Actually," when Zabvronian reproductive cycles bring depression to the men of the alien household. With Dick Butkus going through the Terrible 10s and Debbie going back to school at the same time, it's going to be an emotional episode.

Thus, poor Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye) has to deal with her fretful men on her own.

This Friday (Nov. 8) in "We Jumped the Shark (Tank)," Debbie Weaver (Jami Gertz), Larry Bird (Simon Templeman) and Jackie Joyner Kersee (Toks Olagundoye) will all face the scary reality waters of "Shark Tank" in an attempt to sell Debbie's brand-new invention.

"The Neighbors" is welcoming two sitcom legends in guest-starring roles. Reginald VelJohnson -- formerly Carl Winslow of "Family Matters" -- and Meredith Baxter -- Elyse Keaton on "Family Ties" -- will make an appearance on the show's Thanksgiving episode.

But who will these comedy parents play? They will play parents, of course. They're the parents of Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye), to be exact (as reported by EW.com). This means that the characters will a) be aliens and b) be really super weird.

It sometimes takes a little more than just one season to become a hit. Just ask "Big Bang Theory," which found new life as a veteran series than it did as a new series. I’m sad that The Neighbors’ first season has ended. I never would have imagined typing that sentence when the show made ABC’s prime-time schedule last summer, and yet there I was last night watching the season finale, marveling at the show’s genial, committed weirdness and feeling affection for every frame of the damned thing. The episode’s high point was the climactic montage that cut between the secretly extraterrestrial couple Larry Bird (Simon Templeman) and Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye) getting formally married in an Atlantic City casino after 462 years together. Back home, their gated community full of more secret extraterrestrials reacted to a visit from a supreme commander (George Takei) whose arrival had been heralded by pieces of toast inscribed with messages. He had come to tell the faux suburbanites that he was pulling the plug on their mission to gather intelligence in advance of an invasion.

If you haven’t yet caught an episode of ABC‘s The Neighbors, tonight may be your night. It follows a family who has moved to the suburbs and discovers that all of the other inhabitants of their beautiful new little neighborhood are all from another planet. They have all taken human form and sports star names, and tend to dress completely alike. Kind of Stepford-y but in an absurdist, snarky way.

Because it’s an ABC (whose parent company is Disney) show, and because all of the aliens tend to act in over-the-top ways since they aren’t yet totally familiar with our human, and particularly American, ways, they have been given a musical episode with music by Alan Menken.

Not familiar with the name? Ever heard of Disney‘s The Little Mermaid? Beauty and the Beast? Aladdin? Pocahontas? The Hunchback of Notre Dame? Hercules? Enchanted? Tangled? All composed by Alan Menken.

Both actors will appear in the episode side-by-side. According to the story, Takei is to appear as the father of Simon Templeman's Larry Bird, who has come to Earth with an important announcement. Hamill will portray a co-worker. As can be seen in the image below, they're obviously in the same scene together as opposed to their working apart in the same episode. And for those who have Not seen The Neighbors - about a neighborhood of aliens who look like humans, and have one human family in their community - it's highly recommended that you check it out. It is one of the most bizarrely enjoyable series on the air.

If the aliens can't get back into space, then "The Neighbors" will bring space to the aliens. Two of science fiction's biggest icons -- Mark Hamill of "Star Wars" and George Takei of "Star Trek" -- will guest-star on the bizarre ABC comedy.

Takei, who played Sulu on the original "Star Trek" series, will appear as Larry Bird's (Simon Templeman) father in the "Neighbors" season 1 finale, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Does this mean that there is a rank above commander in the alien society of "The Neighbors"? Alas, we know neither that nor which sports legend's name Takei's character will use.

The visit will come when Papa Bird comes to Earth with an important announcement.

Hamill will appear in the finale as well, playing a co-worker of Larry Bird's father (as reported by TVGuide.com. It is not clear whether Hamill's character is human or Zabvronian.

If none of this makes sense to you,...

If there is a comedy show out there appealing to science-fiction fans -- like say "Big Bang Theory" or "3rd Rock from the Sun" -- expect George Takei to be a part of it. That latest show is "Neighbors," where actual illegal aliens become a part of the neighborhood on ABC. Takei, best known for playing Sulu in the original "Star Trek" series and films, will show up in the season finale as the father of character Larry Bird, played by Simon Templeton. ABC won't say exactly what kind of rule beyond that Takei will have, except that he comes bearing a big announcement for the alien clan. But could this role open up doors for later appearances, possibly even more regular in Season 2? Takei had something similar happen in the NBC genre show "Heroes," where he played the father to Masi ...

HBO has yet to officially announce a Girls renewal — but that’s not stopping Lena Dunham.

During an appearance this week on Alec Baldwin’s Here’s The Thing podcast, the Golden Globe-winning writer/actress revealed that production on Season 3 of the comedy is “starting at the end of March. I’m so excited.”

Even better, Baldwin may have used Dunham’s pick-up news to land his first post-30 Rock gig. “I’ll come and play your therapist,” he offered, to which she replied: “That would be the most fun thing in the world.”

As we’ve learned on ABC’s comedy The Neighbors, the Zabvronian aliens do everything a little bit differently than their new human neighbors. For example, the Zabvronians cry green tears from their ears instead of clear ones from their eyes and nourish their bodies by reading…books. And the list goes on and on.

Chicago – And the award for the worst new show of the season goes to…drum roll please…while “Guys with Kids,” “Partners,” and “The Mob Doctor” put up a Hell of a fight, “The Neighbors” wins in a landslide. This dated, cliched, unfunny, grating, horrendous program is so bad that it makes one assume that blackmail must have been involved in its scheduling because one can’t believe that anyone looked at this and thought it should be funded enough to get on the air for creative reasons.

The best thing we can say about "The Neighbors" is that ABC's new alien sitcom isn't as offensive as last season's "Work It" (about unemployed men dressing as women to find jobs).

But the fact that the network greenlit this project and giving it a special premiere tonight (Sept. 26) after "Modern Family" -- one of network TV's smartest comedies -- is a slap in the face to television audiences.

Even more baffling is that "The Neighbors" comes from Dan Fogelman, writer of the wonderful "Crazy Stupid Love" and "Cars."

When asked how he made the transition from sophisticated to stupid (maybe not in those exact words), Fogelman said he's wanted to make a show that "an entire family could watch together."

Fair enough, but "Modern Family" manages to do the same without canned laughs and appealing to the lowest common denominator: in this case, 6-year-olds. And honestly, there are some gags,...

Every new TV show is a gamble. That’s especially true in the crowded fall season, when the networks roll out an array of new shows. Many of them won’t make it to a second season – and even if they do, it takes years for a TV show to turn a profit. There are ways to mitigate the risk, of course. You cast a recognizable actor. You work with a successful producer – look, there’s Ryan Murphy doing his Ryan Murphy thing with The New Normal! And even in the modern era of DVR and downloading, a good timeslot is still essential.

It’s September, and you know what that means: It’s time to meet new shows in addition to reuniting with your returning favorites.

Each year, networks decide what shows to keep, move around and cancel, leaving open spots for a gaggle of new series. This month, many of the pilots for these shows will make their small screen debut. It may be overwhelming to be faced with 20 new shows this fall, so I’ll explain which programs did and didn’t make the cut for my DVR queue.

Here are my picks for the best new series of the fall TV season. (Note that this ranking did not take into account the mid-season premieres, even though there are some stand-out players in that arena.)

1) Nashville (ABC)

ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.

Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the third one announced. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on ABC.

An odd year for the once mighty juggernaut which can still pack 'em in. It had surprise success stories with "Once Upon a Time" and "Revenge", the latter becoming an unexpected international hit, and several shows have gotten renewals despite more modest numbers. Still, with it battling with NBC for the third and fourth position overall, the network has to introduce ten shows over the course of the season in the hope of getting a few stickers.

Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen include the fashion label dynasty soap "Americana", ABC's update of the 90's "Beauty and the Beast" TV series, the Roland Emmerich-produced thriller "Dark Horse", the...

Last Resort

According to the Official ABC Description: 500 feet beneath the ocean’s surface, the U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado receive their orders. Over a radio channel, designed only to be used if their homeland has been wiped out, they’re told to fire nuclear weapons at Pakistan.

Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) demands confirmation of the orders only to be unceremoniously relieved of duty by the White House. Xo Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) finds himself suddenly in charge of the submarine and facing the same difficult decision. When he also refuses to fire without confirmation of the orders, the Colorado is targeted, fired upon, and hit. The submarine and its crew find themselves crippled on the ocean floor, declared rogue enemies of their own country. Now, with nowhere left to turn, Chaplin and Kendal take the sub on the run and bring the men and women of the Colorado to an exotic island.

Yesterday was ABC‘s turn for upfront presentations, which meant that yesterday morning the network released its fall schedule and more detailed information about its new 2012-2013 series. We’ve been watching the development of 666 Park Avenue starring Terry O’Quinn for some time now, and had been keeping an eye on the alien comedy The Neighbors, but we got a wonderful surprise today when we saw the full description of midseason (meaning 2013) series Zero Hour starring Anthony Edwards.

We had been told that he played a skeptic whose wife gets abducted, but happily, as we found today, he is a “confessed paranormal junkie” and that he will be running ”a breathless race against the clock to find his wife and save humanity.” Ooo, save humanity! It’s also said to be a DaVinci Code-type hunt with ancient clues. What sealed it for me was the trailer, which we have for you.

ABC obviously has high hopes for its alien comedy "The Neighbors," slating it to follow the network's golden goose "Modern Family" at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays this fall.

Aliens may not seem like the obvious choice for a comedy premise in 2012, but the trailer is just so different from all of the other new shows being trotted out this week by the networks that it definitely deserves a look.

Here's the deal: Debbie (Jami Gertz) and Marty Weaver (Lenny Venito) recently moved with their three kids to Hidden Hills, an exclusive New Jersey community that hasn't had a house come on the market in 10 years. And the neighbors are ... a little odd. They all have pro-athlete names like Reggie Jackson (Tim Jo), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye), Dick Butkis (Ian Patrick) and Larry Bird (Simon Templeman). Pretty soon, though, the secret's out, and the Weavers learn that the whole community is made up of aliens.
