Legendary Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will sing with Shania Twain, Karol G, Chris Stapleton, and more on his new Duets album, arriving Oct. 25 via Decca Records/Sugar Music.

Charles & Camilla show up on 'American Idol' with Lionel Richie, Katy Perry
Image
Los Angeles, May 8 (Ians) Lionel Richie and Katy Perry weren’t able to perform their normal tasks as judges on Sunday night’s ‘American Idol’, as they were across the pond performing for the coronation of King Charles III, reports ‘Variety’. So they brought back a souvenir for the show: The actual just-crowned King and Queen.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla were surprise guests on ‘American Idol’, in a pre-taped package introduced at the start of the show by host Ryan Seacrest, ‘Variety’ notes. The clip opens with Richie and Perry, in a room that appears to be inside Windsor Castle. Suddenly, in walks the King and Queen.

“I just wanted to check, how much, how long you’ll be using this room for?” King Charles quipped to Richie, according to ‘Variety’. Charles then thanked Richie for attending and performing at the coronation.

Andrea Bocelli Reveals Which Song King Charles Requested For Coronation Concert (Exclusive)
Image
Andrea Bocelli gave the newly crowned King Charles III exactly what he wanted with a stunning performance of a special song at the grand coronation ceremony on Sunday.

Ahead of the performance at Windsor Castle, Bocelli spoke with Et’s Kevin Frazier about the event and the song he performed with fellow opera legend Sir Bryn Terfel.

“The king asked for the song, ‘You Will Never Walk Alone,'” Bocelli explained. “I think he likes this song also for the meaning… ‘You Will Never Walk Alone’ means you will never be alone. It’s an encouragement, for himself.”

The song itself famously comes from the iconic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel, from 1945, and has been covered to great fanfare by many renowned artists who, like Bocelli, reimagined it in a different style.

The star-studded Coronation Concert was a grand affair, and Bocelli said he felt honored to be a part...

King Charles and Queen Camilla Appear on ‘American Idol’
Image
The coronation of King Charles III on Saturday had all manner of bizarre rituals and moments, but perhaps one of the weirdest was revealed on Sunday night when the newly minted British monarch and his wife Queen Camilla made an appearance on American Idol.

In a pre-taped segment, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry had called into the latest episode of Idol to explain their absence as they were in London performing at Sunday’s The Coronation Concert in celebration of Charles acceding to the throne. Speaking to Idol host Ryan Seacrest, Richie and Perry appeared to be in a grand room inside Windsor Castle, where the concert took place.

Charles and Camilla then wander into the shot and rather awkwardly ask when Richie and Perry would be finished using the room they were filming the segment.

In the absence of Richie and Perry, two crown subjects, Alanis Morissette (Canadian) and...

“You Can Be My Wingman Anytime”: Tom Cruise Joins Star-Studded Coronation Concert to Celebrate King Charles III
Image
It was the U.K.’s first coronation in 70 years — a cause even Hugh Jackman, Tom Cruise and Pierce Brosnan had to celebrate.

A star-studded lineup for King Charles III’s Coronation Concert took to an enormous stage on Windsor Castle grounds, the historic building a shimmering backdrop for a crowd of 20,000 on Sunday night.

The polished gardens — tidy from the monarch’s “7 a.m. weeding,” joked Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville, who served as host for the event — were a sea of red, white and royal blue as fans across the country gathered to toast to the king and queen.

In and among performances from Katy Perry, Nicole Scherzinger and Lionel Richie (the latter managing to tempt the king out of his seat for some bobbing to All Night Long) were video messages of congratulations and “Did you know?” facts about Charles from Hollywood royalty.

“Pilot-to-pilot, Your Majesty, you...

Lionel Richie And Katy Perry Join UK Stars To Perform At First Ever Coronation Concert
Image
Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Tom Cruise led the American contingent joining a list of international artists performing at the UK’s first ever Coronation Concert on Sunday evening.

King Charles, Queen Camilla and other royal family members took their seats to watch the stars perform on a specially constructed golden stage at Windsor Castle.

Despite the A-list lineup, arguably the most dazzling part of the night came with an aerial lightshow, powered by drones, highlighting the natural world, while Alexis Ffrench sang Simple Minds’ anthem ‘Don’t You Forget About Me.’

This was the first time there had ever been a Coronation Concert, and the first...

Other confirmed acts include opera singers Andrea Bocelli and Sir Bryn Terfel, singer-songwriter Freya Ridings, and classical composer Alexis Ffrench.

The concert will be broadcast on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.

Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Andrea Bocelli To Headline King’s Coronation Concert
Image
Katy Perry, Take That, Andrea Bocelli, and Lionel Richie are the headline names announced as the first stars set to appear at King Charles III’s coronation concert, taking place the day after his installment.

Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Theater Review: The Philharmonic’s Razor-Sharp Sweeney Todd
Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Wozzeck, Salome, Sweeney Todd—it's the season of bloodied blades and cankered psyches, displayed in musical splendor. At the New York Philharmonic, the ceremony of innocence began with the rituals of concert hall decorum: white tie and tails, orchestra tuning, polite bows. The soloists filed on in oratorio-like stiffness, and then came deliberate mayhem. Bryn Terfel flung aside his binder of music, and the rest of the cast followed. Gowns were shredded and flower vases dropped. Demure choristers mutated into snarling toughs, a handful of whom flipped a piano, hoisted it into the air, and let it drop with a crash. Shorn of its upturned legs, the concert grand turned into a platform — another bit of topography on the stage’s fluid terrain. While all this insanity flared, singers and orchestra maintained a terrifying discipline, ruthlessly snapping out Stephen Sondheim’s internal rhymes and ominous melodies. Alan Gilbert has already...

Emma Thompson makes acclaimed New York debut in Sweeney Todd
British actor plays Mrs Lovett alongside Bryn Terfel for just five performances at the Avery Fisher Hall

Emma Thompson has made her New York stage debut to critical acclaim but it will be over in a flash – there will be only five performances of her playing London's worst piemaker .

After a gap of nearly 25 years since she last took to the stage, Thompson is starring alongside Bryn Terfel in a concert production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd at the Avery Fisher Hall.

She plays Mrs Lovett and when she began the run on Wednesday she was following in some impressive footsteps. Angela Lansbury won a Tony after originating the role in 1979 and the character has been played in the West End by Sheila Hancock, Julia McKenzie and in 2012, Imelda Staunton.

So how did she do? Writing for the Guardian, Kayla Epstein said Thompson "not only held her own against more experienced vocalists,...

Emma Thompson is Magnificent in “Sweeney Todd” Opening Night!
She’s more than proven her acting chops on screen, and it’s evident that Emma Thompson's talent translates well to the stage.

The “Stranger Than Fiction” actress starred in the New York Philharmonic’s “Sweeney Todd,” which opened at Avery Fisher Hall last night (March 5).

Of the gig, Emma told press, “It's been the greatest thrill so far. When [my costar] Bryn Terfel sang his first lines, I fell over.”

And it sounds like the New York Daily News enjoyed the production- “Thompson showed off a robust singing voice and plenty of comic chops. She was the perfect foil for the vengeful demon barber played by opera star's Bryn Terfel, whose burly baritone was a fine fit for Sondheim's beautiful and haunting songs.”...

Sweeney Todd review – a silky, brassy Emma Thompson joins Bryn Terfel's monstrous barber
This mostly pitch-perfect musical from the New York Philharmonic shows why it's time to put proper orchestras behind shows again

Staging musicals as concerts is a tricky business but the New York Philharmonic's production of Sweeney Todd, starring Emma Thompson and Bryn Terfel, is an energetic theatrical performance that manages to hit the right notes.

Making her New York stage debut as Mrs Lovett (a role originated by Angela Lansbury), Thompson runs off with the show. Her Mrs Lovett is shrewd, conniving and utterly in control of the operation until the final moments. Her voice is silky one moment, brassy the next; it helps that the role is perfect for an imperfect voice.

Thompson's partner in crime, however, could have asked her for a few acting tips. Terfel's intimidating bass-baritone is perfect for Sweeney Todd, and his 6ft 4in frame conveys menace, but Terfel's Sweeney comes across as a monster not a brute.

Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
On the Scene: Emma Thompson cuts it up, literally, as Mrs. Lovett in 'Sweeney Todd'
Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Is there anything Emma Thompson cannot do? The British actress, snubbed for an Oscar nomination this year for her turn as Mary Poppins writer P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks, proves herself a felonious triple threat as the cannibalistic cook Mrs. Lovett in a five-night-only concert version of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, which opened Wednesday night at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC’s Lincoln Center. (If you’re unable to snag a ticket to one of the remaining performances, fret not: PBS is filming the production for broadcast later this year.)

Thompson sings surprisingly well, she quips, she does pratfalls,...

On my radar: Bryn Terfel
Welsh opera star Bryn Terfel picks his cultural highlights of the moment, from Rhys Ifans to operatic Tudors

Bryn Terfel is a Welsh bass-baritone opera singer. Born in Pant Glas, Caernarfonshire, Terfel attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1989 with the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial award. He has since performed leading roles in Mozart, Puccini and Wagner at some of the most famous opera houses in the world. In 1996 he won the Royal Philharmonic Society award for singer of the year and he became the second recipient of the Queen's medal for music in 2006. His new album Homeward Bound, recorded in Salt Lake City with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, is out now.

Actor: Rhys Ifans

I was at Guildhall with him and he has done some magnificent work since he left. He stole the show in Notting Hill and as Howard Marks in Mr Nice (left). Now he's in the latest Spider-Man movies.

Look: Huge World Premiere Coming To San Francisco
Giuseppe Verdi
San Francisco — The San Francisco Opera will present the world premiere of Tobias Picker's "Dolores Claiborne" on Sept. 18 next year.

The company said Monday that the opera, with a libretto by J.D. McClatchy, will be based on Stephen King's 1992 novel about a character who denies killing her employer but admits murdering her husband almost three decades earlier after learning he sexually molested their 14-year-old daughter.

Mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick will sing the title character, soprano Elizabeth Futral will perform the elderly employer Vera Donovan, Susannah Biller the daughter Selena St. George, Wayne Tigges the husband Joe St. George, and Greg Fedderly will be Detective Thibodeau.

George Manahan conducts and James Robinson directs. There will be six performances through Oct. 4 of the staging, a co-production with the Opera Company of St. Louis.

This will be the fifth opera for Picker following "Emmeline" (1996), "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (1998), "Therese Raquin" (2001) and "An American Tragedy...

Review: Tosca (Opera at the Cinema)
It seems that increasingly the cinema is not just a venue to enjoy films in any more. Live sporting events, concerts, ballet, opera and theatre are just some of the alternative programming that has started to be streamed onto cinema screens, and with some degree of success too. Ahead of their new season (presented by The Royal Opera House), which promises “a breatht4King spectacle of opera, ballet and theatre” we were invited by Vue cinemas to sample this unique experience for ourselves by watching some opera in a plush screen at their Westfield London site.

Now, being a film nut, this humble reviewer had to admit to not knowing a jot about opera before arriving. We were to be watching a recorded version of Puccini’s Tosca, which had been streamed live into cinemas from The Royal Opera House in July last year. The production starred Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufmann...

Anniversaries: Ralph Vaughan Williams Born 140 Years Ago
The son of a vicar (and Charles Darwin was his great-uncle), Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) became one of the most popular English composers. He studied under Charles Villiers Stanford and Hubert Parry at the Royal College of Music, but also read history and music at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he palled around with the philosophers Bertrand Russell and G.E. Moore. He also went to Germany for lessons with Max Bruch, but ultimately rejected the 19th century German Romantic style Friendships with fellow Rcm students Gustav Holst and Leopold Stokowski later bore more fruit, in different ways: Stokowski, who moved to the United States, became Rvw's biggest supporter there; Holst and Vaughan Williams critiqued each others' work and joined in the study and collection of English folk songs. "The knowledge of our folk songs did not so much discover for us something new, but uncovered something which had been hidden by foreign matter,...

Don Giovanni - hero or villain?
Sex-crazed business man? Gay icon? Drug addict or anti-imperialist cipher? The many faces of Don Giovanni

In the Don Giovanni that has just opened in Paris, the eponymous hero has become an irredeemable sex pest of a businessman. Too much power and sex has corroded his soul. Perhaps you work with him. Perhaps you are him. At the end, in his nocturnal office, Giovanni is stabbed through the heart by the co-worker he sexually assaulted in act one, thrown through a window by a crowd of downtrodden cleaners, at least one of whom he tried to grope, and then accompanied to hell by the rotting corpse of the CEO he murdered at the outset. Twenty-first century moral? Don't stay late at the office.

The desperate Don's comeuppance, though, strikes me as unfair. As Kierkegaard noted in Either/Or, Don Giovanni is the opera's erotically animating presence. "His passion resonates everywhere...

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum Help Raise Millions for the Rainforests
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum helped raise millions more for the preservation of the Rainforest and its indigenous people and stole the show Step Up-style at New York City’s Carnegie Hall during a special charity concert for the Rainforest Foundation last week!

In front of esteemed guests and fellow performers such as Bill Clinton, Meryl Streep, Elton John, Rita Wilson, Sting and Jennifer Hudson, the beautiful couple performed a steamy routine to Roxanne (courtesy of Welsh bass-baritone opera and concert singer Bryn Terfel) which showed off their impressive dance skills during the “Songs of the Silver Screen” charity event.

Chan even took to the stage as backup dancer to Sir Elton John for a hilarious rendition of “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend”, and when Elton John sang ‘Rock Around the Clock’ and Bruno Mars did ‘Heartbreak Hotel’, the whole cast – from Sting to Streep to Chan...

When Channing Tatum Dirty Danced With Elton John
Elton John
Elton John got more than he may have expected last night when he performed a Marilyn Monroe number during the Revlon Concert for the Rainforest Fund at Carnegie Hall. Launching into "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," the singer was soon joined onstage by Channing Tatum, wearing a bowler hat and a vest and doing a flirty bump and grind. In Magic Mike mode, Tatum wiggled around John in what nearly could have passed for a lap dance, reaching out here and there to festoon him with the song's titular jewels. "No, I didn't know Channing was going to do that," John insisted when Vulture caught up with him afterwards at a late dinner at Pierre. "But it was fun! I didn't know he could dance that well." Tatum also busted out some sexy tango-like dance moves with his wife Jenna during opera singer Bryn Terfel's take on "Roxanne...

Christina Ricci, Kristin Scott Thomas, Uma Thurman, and Robert Pattinson in Bel Ami (2012)
Has It All Gone To R-Patz’s Head?
Christina Ricci, Kristin Scott Thomas, Uma Thurman, and Robert Pattinson in Bel Ami (2012)
Robert Pattinson has made a generation of girls swoon, and brought in millions of dollars for the producers of the Twilight phenomenon, where his portrayal of Edward Cullen means he needn't get out of bed again if he doesn’t feel like it.

So, it would be understandable if such adulation had gone to his pretty tousle-haired head, and made him a bit difficult to work with. How did the directors of his new film Bel Ami deal with such an idol on this, their very first film?

"He was delightful," insists Nick Ormerod, one half of the directing duo along with Declan Donnellan - established theatre directors with a body of stage, ballet and opera work more than three decades in the making, but novices when it came to film.

"He did insist on rehearsing for a whole month before we did our first shoot, which is apparently unheard of in Hollywood,...

Jennifer Hudson And Bruno Mars To Join Sting At Rainforest Concert
Jennifer Hudson and Bruno Mars have been added to the incredible lineup for the upcoming Revlon Concert for the Rainforest Fund.

They join an all-star list of performers including Sting, Elton John, James Taylor, Meryl Streep, Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, Bryn Terfel and Katharine McPhee at the concert on April 3, 2012, which will be held at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, followed by a gala dinner.

The Rainforest Fund was founded in 1989 by Sting and Trudie Styler in response to a direct request for help from a Kayapo Indian leader in Brazil who was seeking to protect his people’s land and culture. Over the past 23 years, the Rainforest Fund has worked in partnership with more than 100 local organizations in all major rainforest areas and successfully protected over 115,000 sq km of forest. In 2012 the Rainforest Fund continues supporting a range of long term projects including comprehensive policy programs,...
