Matt Baldovsky Out At Range
Image
Exclusive: TV Lit manager Matt Baldovsky has exited Range Media Partners less than two years into his tenure, Deadline has learned.

Sources described this as a mutually agreeable parting of ways that came about as part of Range’s biannual review process. No next destination was given.

Baldovsky has worked over the years with clients including Munis Rashid (The Night Agent), Johanna Lee (Dune), Tj Brady & Rasheed Newson (Bel-Air), Sue Tenney & Amy Robertson (Virgin River), Tawnya Bhattacharya & Ali Laventhol (Twin Territories), Lauren Moon (Ransom Canyon), Mnelik Belilgne (Survival of the Thickest), Amy York Rubin (Dead to Me), Hank Jones (Will Trent), Kevin & Matthew McManus (Redux Redux), Jovan Robinson (For All Mankind), and the duo of Josh Kirby & Jon Veles (Stillwaters), among others. If You're Waiting For Gilmore Girls Season 9 To Finally Happen, Watch This Acclaimed Netflix Show That Just Got Renewed For Season 7
Image
While holding out hope for a ninth season of Gilmore Girls, Netflix has the perfect TV show that will fill the Stars Hollow-shaped hole in fans' hearts. Amy Sherman-Palladino's teen comedy-drama series ran for seven seasons on The WB and The CW (for its final season) before ending in 2007. Almost ten years later, though, Netflix revived Gilmore Girls for a four-episode miniseries — Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life — which served as the show's unofficial eighth season. After it ended on a cliffhanger, many believe and hope season 9 is inevitable, but as of 2024, it hasn't happened (yet).

Amy Sherman-Palladino and almost the entire original cast of Gilmore Girls returned for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Netflix in 2016.

The good news is that many more TV series similar to Gilmore Girls exist. The world might never run out of comedy-drama shows to watch, after all (with some...

Virgin River Showrunner Gives Detailed Response On Potential Prequel & Spinoffs: "A Rich World With Rich Characters"
Image
Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith gives a detailed response on the plans for a prequel and spinoffs. Virgin River season 6 ended in an eventful place after building to the wedding of Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson). But while there are cliffhangers to address, including the fate of Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), the hit romantic drama is also facing down the possibility of expanding with a potential prequel focused on Mel's parents.

In an interview with Swoon, Smith confirms that the prequel is still in development after Mel's parents — Sarah (Happy Death Day's Jessica Rothe) and Everett (Hollyoaks alum Callum Kerr) were introduced in Virgin River season 6. The showrunner and executive producer adds, in the quote below, that viewers can expect them to return for the already-confirmed season 7:

There’s so much that was presumed, and some things that have been referenced, but that’s where I...

‘Virgin River’ Star Benjamin Hollingsworth Is Done Playing a Bad Boy
Image
[This story contains spoilers for Virgin River season six.]

In the early seasons of Virgin River, star Benjamin Hollingsworth was wherever the trouble was, but he’s now turning his bad-boy character around in season six.

The 40-year-old Canadian actor, who saw earlier success on the CBS medical drama Code Black, eventually found his home on the Netflix series, which follows relationships, drama and romance in Virgin River, a fictional small town in Northern California. While Hollingsworth started out playing villain Brady, he was on a mission to show a different side of his character. And over six seasons (Virgin River has also been renewed for a seventh), the actor slowly stripped Brady of his mask.

“I love redemption arcs because I take your idea of what the character is and essentially that’s a mask that he has on,” Hollingsworth tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And then you see [his love interest] Brie [Zibby Allen] come along in...

‘Virgin River’ Boss on Expanding Franchise With Prequel: ‘We Hit Gold’ With Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr
Image
When “Virgin River” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith chose to expand to the universe with a prequel, he knew the casting had to be right. Luckily, he found Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr to take on the roles of Mel’s parents, Sarah Jensen and Everett Reed.

“It was a search. It was always the plan that this could potentially be a back-door pilot, introducing this new timeline, so we cast with that in mind,” Smith tells Variety ahead of the Season 6 drop, during which Rothe and Kerr make their debut. “We did chemistry reads with them and a couple of other actors who were really incredible. But Jess and Callum had such a spark together, such a fire together that it felt like we had hit gold in casting them.”

The spinoff, he says, will focus “not just the romance of Sarah and Everett, but also the origins of Virgin River in the 1970s.

‘Virgin River’ Gets Early Season 7 Renewal To Become Netflix’s Longest-Running Drama Series
Image
As they are preparing for a wedding, Virgin River fans will also get a honeymoon. Ahead of the December 19 release of Season 6, which culminates with the long-awaited Jack & Mel nuptials, Netflix has renewed the popular romantic drama for a seventh season. Like Season 6 (as well as Seasons 1-3), it will consist of 10 episodes.

With the early renewal, Virgin River becomes Netflix’s longest-running current original scripted series as well as the longest-running English-language drama series in the streamer’s history. Its seven-season run to date matches that of comedy Grace and Frankie and comedy-drama Orange Is the New Black, which was designated as a comedy for its first couple of seasons before switching to drama consideration. Virgin River has now eclipsed such Netflix staples as House of Cards and The Crown, which ran for six seasons each, with only the Spanish teen drama Elite ahead of it in number of...

‘Virgin River’ Snags Early Season 7 Renewal
Image
“Virgin River” will return for Season 7. Netflix has renewed the series for another season — and quite early, with the announcement landing two months ahead of the Season 6 premiere. Patrick Sean Smith will return as showrunner for the 10-episode seventh season, after joining the series with Season 5.

The renewal makes “Virgin River” one of Netflix’s longest-running original series, alongside titles like “Grace & Frankie” (seven seasons), “Orange Is the New Black” (seven seasons), “Elite” (eight seasons) and “Big Mouth” (ending with Season 8). But the renewal doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Based on Robyn Carr’s bestselling 21-book series, “Virgin River” is also a huge hit for the streamer, appearing in the Global Top 10 English TV list for 25 weeks since Netflix launched the Top 10 lists in 2021. Season 5, which was given a two-part release in 2023, reached the Top 10 in 77 countries.

‘Virgin River’ Season 6 To Premiere Earlier Than Expected, First-Look Images Released
Image
Just in time for Christmas — the sixth season of Virgin River is set to premiere Dec. 19. And it’s not one of those half-season drops that Netflix has been doing a lot of lately — all 10 episodes of Season 6 will be available that day.

That is slightly ahead of schedule — Netflix at the start of February unveiled its 2024 original slate, and Virgin River, along with a slew of other fan favorites, like Stranger Things, Ginny & Georgia and Wednesday, were not on the list, pointing to a 2025 return.

However, nothing is set in stone — Virgin River is the second series originally eyed for 2025 that will be back sooner than anticipated. The other is The Lincoln Lawyer, whose third season was delivered early and will debute Oct. 17.

Meanwhile, a series that was on Netflix’s 2024 release list, Season 2 of breakout hit The Night Agent, is yet to get a premiere date.

Season 6 of Virgin River,...

Exclusive: Indie studio Wiip has optioned Amanda Eyre Ward’s 2022 novel The Lifeguards. Combining three mothers’ points of view in a narrative tale with commentary from neighborhood listservs, secret text messages, and police reports, The Lifeguards, is both a story about the secrets we tell to protect the ones we love, and a riveting novel of suspense filled with half-truths and betrayals, fierce love and complicated friendships, and the loss of innocence on one hot summer night.

“The mothers and teenage sons of The Lifeguards are close to my heart,” Ward said. “From the moment...

Virgin River: 16 Biggest Differences Between The Show & The Books
Image
The Virgin River TV show differs from the books in terms of storylines, characters, and major events, causing some fans to prefer the printed form. The focus on Mel and Jack as the main couple in the TV show is not reflective of the book series, where they are not always the primary focus. Several characters, such as Vanessa, are exclusive to the books and have not been included in the Netflix series.

Fans of Virgin River have enjoyed the Netflix series, but there are also plenty who compare the Virgin River books vs. TV show, such as those who point out that Mel never had a baby in the Virgin River books. While TV fans wait to see what will happen with the relationship between Mel and Jack, others have read the Robyn Carr books the show is based on and know that this is not always the most important question asked.

Time might pass very slowly in Virgin River – these characters are only about to experience their first Christmas since the show premiered in 2019 – but that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of things happening.

Virgin River: Netflix Drama Head Addresses Whether Series Will End With Season 5
Martin Henderson and Alexandra Breckenridge in Virgin River (2019)
Virgin River has been a huge hit for Netflix since its launch in 2019.

The romantic drama landed a two-season renewal last year, keeping it on the air through its fifth season.

With Virgin River Season 4 recently wrapped, there have been questions about whether the show will end with its fifth season.

Netflix tends to end shows before they get to a fifth season, unless they are global hits.

Thankfully, Jinny Howe, the Netflix drama head sees "longevity and growth" ahead, meaning that there's a good chance the show will continue for a sixth season.

However, Howe wants the show to continue "as long as the audience asks for it and shows up."

“We see with Season 4 that the fandom is very strong and growing in many places as well,” Howe told Deadline.

“It feels like, based on what we’re seeing with Season 4 and the anticipation for Season 5, that there...

Netflix’s Drama Head Jinny Howe Expands Role, Talks ‘Partner Track’, ‘Manifest’, ‘Virgin River’ Future & More Romance With ‘Ransom Canyon’

Serendipity is a key narrative device in romantic storytelling, and it played a role in Jinny Howe’s 2018 move to Netflix after more than 13 years at John Wells Productions. During her job interview, she professed her love for lush romances, especially from her beloved Jane Austen/Regency era, and after she was hired, she got to work on Bridgerton‘s maiden season as her first project.

She followed the Shondaland Regency romance drama with two female-driven limited series, Shondaland’s Inventing Anna and John Wells Prods.’ Maid. Before any of the shows had premiered to become global hits, Howe was promoted in fall 2020 to Head of Drama, Development, overseeing development of all drama series outside of the Spectacle + Event area and those coming out of Netflix’s roster of overall deals.

As the slate of projects she put in development in that role is starting to hit the platform starting...

Virgin River Gets a New Showrunner for Season 5, but Charmaine Will Remain Pregnant
Martin Henderson and Alexandra Breckenridge in Virgin River (2019)
Time moves slowly on Netflix's megahit Virgin River, and it will continue to do so under new showrunner Patrick Sean Smith.

TV Line reported this week that the Greek creator and Chasing Life EP, is taking over from original showrunner Sue Tenney.

“Sue had moved on to other projects, and I’d worked with Netflix on Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings so we had a pre-existing relationship,” Smith said in a statement to TV Line.

“I was already a fan, and I was super excited when they came to me with the possibility," the new showrunner said.

"The cast cares so much about the show and the fans, and they want to put on the best show possible."

"I think they’ve done that for the past four seasons, so it just makes it easier for me to pick up the ball and keep running into Season 5 and beyond," he added.
