But while there are cliffhangers to address, including the fate of Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), the hit romantic drama is also facing down the possibility of expanding with a potential prequel focused on Mel's parents.

In an interview with Swoon, Smith confirms that the prequel is still in development after Mel's parents — Sarah (Happy Death Day's Jessica Rothe) and Everett (Hollyoaks alum Callum Kerr) were introduced in Virgin River season 6. The showrunner and executive producer adds, in the quote below, that viewers can expect them to return for the already-confirmed season 7:

When “Virgin River” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith chose to expand to the universe with a prequel, he knew the casting had to be right. Luckily, he found Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr to take on the roles of Mel’s parents, Sarah Jensen and Everett Reed.

“It was a search. It was always the plan that this could potentially be a back-door pilot, introducing this new timeline, so we cast with that in mind,” Smith tells Variety ahead of the Season 6 drop, during which Rothe and Kerr make their debut. “We did chemistry reads with them and a couple of other actors who were really incredible. But Jess and Callum had such a spark together, such a fire together that it felt like we had hit gold in casting them.”

The spinoff, he says, will focus “not just the romance of Sarah and Everett, but also the origins of Virgin River in the 1970s.

Just in time for Christmas — the sixth season of Virgin River is set to premiere Dec. 19. And it’s not one of those half-season drops that Netflix has been doing a lot of lately — all 10 episodes of Season 6 will be available that day.

That is slightly ahead of schedule — Netflix at the start of February unveiled its 2024 original slate, and Virgin River, along with a slew of other fan favorites, like Stranger Things, Ginny & Georgia and Wednesday, were not on the list, pointing to a 2025 return.

However, nothing is set in stone — Virgin River is the second series originally eyed for 2025 that will be back sooner than anticipated. The other is The Lincoln Lawyer, whose third season was delivered early and will debute Oct. 17.

The announcement was made as part of Netflix’s first ever upfront presentation to advertisers. It comes before Season 5 of the popular drama series has even set a premiere date, though it is expected to air in the fall.

“Virgin River” was renewed for both Seasons 4 and 5 back in 2021, with Season 4 debuting in July 2022. The series is based on the Robyn Carr book series of the same name.

TV Line reported this week that the Greek creator and Chasing Life EP, is taking over from original showrunner Sue Tenney.

“Sue had moved on to other projects, and I’d worked with Netflix on Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings so we had a pre-existing relationship,” Smith said in a statement to TV Line.

“I was already a fan, and I was super excited when they came to me with the possibility," the new showrunner said.

"The cast cares so much about the show and the fans, and they want to put on the best show possible."

"I think they’ve done that for the past four seasons, so it just makes it easier for me to pick up the ball and keep running into Season 5 and beyond," he added.
