Of Course Poorna Jagannathan’s Favorite ‘Deli Boys’ Scene Involved Beating Up Tan France in Heels
Image
There is a moment, unscripted, in Hulu’s “Deli Boys,” in which Poorna Jagannathan and Tan France start cursing at each other in Urdu.

The two are close friends (and old friends), but France’s acting debut in the absurd comedy series put him through the ringer, until the duo were improvising the most vile things they could say to each other. There’s kutti (bitch), haramzaade (bastard), bhenchod (sister fucker) — all flowing through a meticulously choreographed group fight taking place in a hotel room.

“It really made us think, when we’re at our most primal, these two characters, we go to the place that we are most familiar with where you just speak your own language,” Jagannathan told IndieWire during a recent interview.

That Episode 6 fight is Jagannathan’s favorite scene, the one in which bumbling brothers Raj (Saagar Shaikh) and Mir (Asif Ali) try to save her...

Hulu’s Binge-Worthy ‘Deli Boys’ Is a Chaotic Crime Caper: Review
Image
There is a rich tradition of crime meets comedy — in television, in film, and even in other countries. From “Ocean’s Eleven” to “The Nice Guys” and “The Afterparty” on Apple TV+, it’s always fun to imagine the gritty underworld filled with hilarious characters that don’t belong there. In India, Hindi movies like “Andaz Apna Apna” and “Hera Pheri” and “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” scratch the same itch, infusing life-or-death stakes of illegal activity with good old-fashioned hijinks. It’s the spirit alive and well in “Deli Boys,” the 10-episode Hulu debut now available to stream.

Created by Abdullah Saeed, “Deli Boys” follows brothers Raj (Saagar Shaikh) and Mir (Asif Ali) after the sudden death of their father (Iqbal Theba) when they inherit a family business that couldn’t be further from what they imagined. The body is barely cold before they’re enveloped in a world of drugs and murder,...

Hulu’s ‘Deli Boys’ Bends Genres With Comedy, Crime and Conviction | Digital Cover
Image
When “Deli Boys” first started production, star Saagar Shaikh expected the Hulu series — which follows two pampered brothers who take the reins of their dad’s empire of drug-front convenience stores — to feel akin to darker fare like “Breaking Bad” or “Succession.” Instead, the Onyx Collective series dialed up the laughs, blending genres to lock into its distinct tone.

“There is so much heart to the show. There’s so much drama to it, but all of it is seasoned with comedy all over the place,” Shaikh, who stars in “Deli Boys” alongside Asif Ali and Poorna Jagannathan, told TheWrap for our latest digital cover.

“We started off as ‘Succession,’ and then we ended up as ‘Three Stooges,'” Jagannathan added, noting “for context” that creator Abdullah Saeed was behind a series called “Bong Appétit,” where he hosted extravagant cannabis-infused meals. “I’ve never been given a carte blanche on this level of physical comedy,...

Hulu’s ‘Deli Boys’ Puts a Fresh Spin on Crime Comedy: TV Review
Image
Millennials of a certain vintage may know “Deli Boys” creator Abdullah Saeed from his cannabis-related content for Vice, including shows like “Weediquette” and “Bong Appetit.” With his new Hulu sitcom, Saeed has both made the switch to scripted series and upgraded to harder stuff. The namesake protagonists of “Deli Boys,” two spoiled rich kids who suddenly lose their father, are stunned to learn their family legacy isn’t actually a regional chain of Delaware Valley convenience stores: It’s the cocaine smuggling ring for which the delis were just a distribution front.

A crime comedy with a heavy skew toward the comedy, “Deli Boys” sets its unserious tone with the slapstick demise of patriarch Baba Dar (Iqbal Theba), who gushes blood after taking a golf ball to the head as his slack-jawed failsons Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh) look on in horror. Mir and Raj are a classic odd couple,...

Image
Bike Shed Moto Co. in Los Angeles’s art district turned into a massive convenience store Thursday night as members of the industry gathered to celebrate the forthcoming premiere of Deli Boys with Hulu and The Hollywood Reporter.

The series, a part of Hulu’s Onyx Collective, stars Asif Ali and Saagar Shaikh as Mir and Raj Dar — Pakistani American brothers who, upon their father Baba (Iqbal Theba)’s sudden death, discover his successful business empire is really a criminal enterprise. The comedy — set to premiere on the streamer on March 6 — also stars Poorna Jagannathan as Lucky Auntie, Baba’s close confidante who’s eager to take the reins at Dar Co., and Brian George as Ahmad, an equally power-hungry member of the Dar company.

Crime, Comedy & Convenience Stores: Unwrapping Hulu’s ‘Deli Boys’ With the Cast
Image
“I want my old life back, the one where I didn’t kill anybody and I could still afford sushi,” moans ambitious, buttoned-up Mir Dar (Asif Ali) to his gold-chain-draped pothead older brother Raj (Saagar Shaikh) early on in Hulu‘s fast-paced crime-comedy series Deli Boys. Raj cluelessly offers Mir a lollipop. The only thing these privileged Pakistani American brothers have in common is not being cut out for a life of crime. And yet, that’s the life they must lead after the boys lose everything with the sudden death of their Philadelphia convenience-store-magnate father, Baba (Iqbal Theba). Proud inventor of the Mega Glug 140-ounce coffee cup, Baba had long been evading taxes, and the FBI cleaned the family out in a raid. But he also had a shocking under-the-counter secret: He smuggled cocaine. Now the brothers must use the family’s one remaining deli as a front, and...

Muslims’ Pivotal Hollywood Moment: Trump, Karla Sofía Gascón and a TV Landscape Defying Invisibility | Guest Column
Image
I am still coming off the high caused by The Muslim House activation at the Sundance Film Festival in late January. It was an inspiring space for fostering inclusion and elevating creative voices from American-Muslims and other emerging communities.

Despite President Donald Trump’s executive order around Dei programs, there is still momentum in what television audiences will soon witness. For the first time in American television history, three series that portray Muslim communities will premiere within the first three months of 2025, marking a pivotal moment in the continued evolution of Muslim portrayals in Hollywood. This marks a victory for Muslim creatives working to combat the lingering impact of the decades-old vilification, racism and harmful depictions of Muslims — and as we can see from deleted racist tweets by Karla Sofía Gascón supporting a ban of Islam in Europe despite being a member of a vulnerable community herself, there is still much work to do.

It’s already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated new shows of the year — and one of the most refreshing debuts on streaming. It’s a bold, vibrant dive into South Asian family dynamics through culture and comedy like we’ve never seen before. Pushing past tropes and stereotypes, the 10-episode series follows two spoiled Pakistani-American brothers Mir and Raj, played respectively by Asif Ali (WandaVision) and Saagar Shaikh (Ms. Marvel), dealing with the sudden death of their convenience store-tycoon father (Iqbal Theba) — only to discover he had a secret life as a crime boss.

Glee Cast Join Forces on the SAG-AFTRA Picket Line
Image
The cast of Glee reunites on the picket line to support the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and show solidarity with their union. Glee achieved enormous success and impacted the careers of its stars, but not all cast members were able to sustain that popularity post-show. Actor Darren Criss emphasizes the importance of the strike, stating that they are working creative people who need protection, not just famous movie stars.

The cast of Glee reunites on the SAG-AFTRA picket line, more than 14 years after the premiere of the show and almost 9 years after it ended. Glee has become one of the most popular TV shows in history, especially among young audiences. Created by Ryan Murphy, the series followed a group of students from William McKinley High School from Lima, Ohio, who were part of the school choir team. The "Glee" Cast Honor Naya Rivera on the Picket Line
Image
The "Glee" cast and crew recently reunited in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. On Aug. 23, stars including Heather Morris, Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Kevin McHale, as well as writers, producers, and choreographers for the hit television series joined the picket line in Burbank, CA. Marching alongside former coworkers, the group made sure to include a special shoutout to the late Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez on the show and died after a tragic boating accident in July 2020.

At the protests, a few of the picketers carried signage displaying famous one-liners from "Glee." Morris's sign featured Santana and her quote, "The only straight I am is straight-up broke," while former crew member Meg Doyle held up another screen grab of Santana saying, "I'm about to go all Lima Heights." Ushkowitz's sign also showed a snap of her character Tina Cohen-Chang saying, "I'm dehydrated from all the striking.

Land of Gold Review: An Unvarnished View of the Immigrant Experience
Image
A Punjabi-American truck driver, struggling with the birth of his first child, finds an undocumented Mexican girl hiding in the trailer. Land of Gold addresses difficult themes with an emotional and artistic approach. The winner of the Tribeca Film Festival's 2021 Untold Stories grand prize takes an unvarnished view of the immigrant experience in America. Racism and the threat of persecution is a constant fear for those desperate to make a living for their families. But that concern doesn't outweigh the boundless opportunities. Land of Gold is a touching film that haunts in the wake of a melancholic finale.

Kiran (Nardeep Khurmi), a first-generation California Sikh, sits annoyed at his wife's baby shower. A heavily pregnant Preeti (Pallavi Sastry) is also perturbed. Her mother-in-law, Raveena (Riti Sachdeva), has invited too many people to the party. Kiran can't handle the pressure of becoming a father and his mother's intrusiveness. He goes outside...

‘Land of Gold’ Review: This Clunky but Affecting Road Movie Unfolds Like a Real-Life Riff on ‘The Last of Us’
Image
that was made with the support of AT&T and the Tribeca Festival, Nardeep Khurmi’s “Land of Gold” effectively distills the post-apocalyptic horrors of “The Last of Us” into a road movie about two brown Americans trying to survive the long drive across today’s United States.

Instead of traveling West from Boston to Salt Lake City, our reluctant Punjabi hero and his precocious Latina stowaway make their way East from California to Maine; instead of zombified fungus monsters who hunger for human flesh, the film’s surrogate father-daughter duo are forced to navigate 3,000 equally dangerous miles of overeager Ice agents and suspicious white convenience store clerks.

If contrived plotting and clumsy dialogue leave Khurmi’s quasi-neorealist debut feeling almost as fanciful as HBO’s mushroom holocaust, the bond that it forges between a truck driver and his human cargo is held together by a rich tapestry of well-worn truths.

What inspired Suraj Sharma’s character in ‘The Illegal’?
Image
The Illegal, a film that recently premiered on Amazon Prime Video starring Suraj Sharma, Adil Hussain and Shweta Tripathi among others, is a gritty and realistic tale of a young film school student from middle-class India who is forced to drop out to support his family while staying in the United States as an undocumented worker.

According to the 'Life of Pi' actor, Suraj Sharma, the film's story was a lot similar to his personal life experiences. He shares, "During my time in America, I used to go to all these Indian restaurants for my 'Ghar Ka Khaana', where I came across all these Indian people and their back stories, which gave me a very sharp and clear insight of their life. Over the course of years, I realized what intense backgrounds they come from, how they are pushing themselves to provide for their families and fulfill their goals.

You'd think you have seen this before. A young boy from middle-class India lands in the United States chasing a dream, and his struggle for sustenance becomes portrait of the grind that almost every immigrant must endure.

If Danish Renzu's film is outstanding despite the note of familiarity, it is because of the sheer authenticity with which the writer-director tells his tale. The film is unflinching in tone, yet sensitive enough while dissecting the reality it presents. Renzu uses his crisp runtime of 86 minutes well, to set up nuanced storytelling.

Unlike most films pertaining to the subject, "The Illegal" is not about immigrants who enter the US unlawfully. It is about people who come in with legitimate papers,...

The Illegal movie review

Of people, places, dreams, reality and spaces, Danish Renzu’s 'The Illegal' deals with these vicious cycles of an American dream of an Indian with heart and leaves behind some fodder for thought.

Running on the familiar plot line of an Indian immigrant struggling to pursue the great American dream – somewhat similar in theme with Mira Nair’s 2006 'Namesake' starring Irrfan Khan and Tabu.

Danish Renzu’s 'The Illegal' works because it’s weaved with a heart that bleeds with earnestness, need and melancholy.

It must be understood that the immigrant in 'The Illegal'...

Stop Aapi Hate: Industry Heavyweights, Activists On Hollywood’s Responsibility
Image
Flabbergasted on a Zoom call, “Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao accepted the Golden Globe for best director on Sunday night. Between gratitude and marveling over the historic moment, as the first person of Asian descent and second woman ever to win the prize, came a somber question.

Zhao was asked for her thoughts on increased violence against Asian American Pacific Islander communities in America, an abhorrent trend of hate crimes in the past months that only began to gain national media attention recently thanks to celebrity outcry and the social media reach of activists like Nobel prize nominee Amanda Nguyen.

“I sometimes feel like people with so much hate, maybe they just hate themselves,” Zhao pondered of recent attacks that have targeted elderly Aapi people and have largely been correlated to tensions over Covid-19 — specifically hateful rhetoric from the former Trump administration, which often referred to the global pandemic as “the China virus.

SAG-AFTRA Tackles Hate Crimes & Discrimination Against Asian-Americans During Pandemic
Image
SAG-AFTRA members are speaking out about hate crimes and discrimination against Asian-Americans, many of whom have been targeted by their fellow citizens during the coronavirus pandemic. President Donald Trump, who is a member of the union, has even called the virus the “Kung Flu.”

On Tuesday, the union held a virtual panel discussion exploring these issues and also released a public service announcement calling on Americans “to stand against the stigma, xenophobia and harassment related to Covid-19 that Asian Americans continue to experience.”

“As a global community, we are experiencing a historically difficult time due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris. “Unfortunately, instead of working together to get through this crisis, a few misguided people are looking for a scapegoat. We are still seeing a shocking increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans, including shunning, racial profiling, verbal harassment and even physical assault. This is a time of high stress,...

“We’re presuming that an accident happened and we’re presuming she drowned in the lake,” Deputy Chris Dyer said at a news conference Thursday afternoon. “The goal is still to bring Miss Rivera home to her family,” he said.

The Ventura County Sheriffs Department also released the security camera footage from the Lake Piru boat launch. Possibly the last footage of Rivera alive, it shows the actress and and her son as they arrive and rent a pontoon boat.

Some 100 volunteers and public safety personnel from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard and specialized dive teams from Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo and Tulare counties,...

Official Trailer for Alien Creature Horror Comedy 'Useless Humans'
Stephen Ohl
"A party crasher that is out of this world." Quiver Distr. has released an official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled Useless Humans, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Stephen Ohl. This sounds and looks like one of those extra wacky, shoestring budget indie films that is ambitious but actually impressively entertaining. A 30th birthday -- and the survival of mankind -- are left hanging in the balance after a mysterious alien creature crashes the party, forcing four childhood friends to save the night. Starring Josh Zuckerman, Rushi Kota, Davida Williams, Luke Youngblood, Edy Ganem, Maya Kazan, Joey Kern, and Iqbal Theba. This surprisingly looks like some good, stupid fun with a terrible man-in-suit monster and more shenanigans. Might actually be a good time, I want to watch this. Check it out below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Stephen Ohl's Useless Humans, direct from YouTube:...

Based on the popular children’s book Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures by Kate Dicamillo, the story centers on the imaginative, creative and cynical 10-year-old Flora (Lawler), who could hardly predict that the little squirrel she saved from a tragic accident would be born anew and transformed into a superhero with the powers of strength, misspelled poetry and an uncanny knack for helping her and the lovable but broken people in her life become a family again. Sundance Selects has acquired U .S. rights to Henry Barrial’s Uber-inspired “DriverX” starring Patrick Fabian (“Better Call Saul”) and Tanya Clarke (“Banshee”).
