Christopher Nolan Singled Out His $1 Billion Action Thriller As Being 'An Underrated Movie' (& He's Right)
Image
The Dark Knight trilogy transcended the tropes of superhero films with its ambitious scope and grounded narrative. Addressing criticisms against The Dark Knight Rises, director Christopher Nolan explained why fans should revisit that movie.

The Dark Knight Rises, at its core, is a Charles Dickens story. There's a direct reference to that at the end of the film, when Gordon reads a passage from A Tale of Two Cities. Director Christopher Nolan confirmed this inspiration (per Nolan Archive on X), hinting at the movie's layered themes. "There are things in there that we did that are pretty subversive and pretty shocking. It's as close as I'll get to adapting A Tale of Two Cities," he stated.

"I don't have a favorite of any of my films, but I think The Dark Knight Rises is an underrated movie," he asserted. That's unusual considering Nolan's impressive filmography, but The Dark Knight Rises did release to mixed reviews,...

The Story Behind Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’: Illustrated Artworks Of The Legendary Tales Related To Gods, Monsters & Odysseus’ Epic Return
Image
For millennia, the epic poems of Homer have profoundly shaped Western literature and thought with their timeless tales of heroism, gods and the enduring human spirit. While The Iliad plunges us into the raw intensity of the Trojan War’s final weeks, unleashing the wrath of Achilles and detailing the tragic fall of a mighty city, its equally monumental successor The Odyssey unfolds a distinct, yet equally compelling, narrative. This second great epic shifts its focus from the blood-soaked battlefields to the treacherous seas and distant, mythical lands, chronicling the legendary Greek hero Odysseus’ decade-long quest to reclaim his home and family after the fall of Troy.

Director Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the timeless epic, The Odyssey, is slated for release on July 17, 2026. The film will be presented in Imax with Nolan’s longtime creative partner Emma Thomas producing. The star-studded cast features Matt Damon in the lead role as the king of Ithaca,...

First Trailer For Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Leaks Online
Image
The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, currently screening in theaters only, has leaked online.

We won’t be linking to leaked material, but to describe the trailer for you: We open on an overcast ocean, with someone saying in voiceover, “Darkness. Zeus’ law smashed to pieces. A kingdom without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, somehow he won it.”

We cut to Tom Holland’s Telemachus — son of Odysseus — asking a character played by Jon Bernathal whether he’s seen his father.

Bernthal replies that he hasn’t since the Trojan war, before addressing a room full of people to ask, “Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have a story?”

Per Bernthal, “Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor. Some say he perished. Some say he’s imprisoned.” Still, he wonders, “what...

"This Is My Guy": 'Sinners' Director Ryan Coogler Credits This Legendary Filmmaker as His "Mentor"
Image
Ryan Coogleris giving flowers to one of cinema’s most influential modern filmmakers — and it’s not just professional admiration. While visiting the Criterion Closet to pull selections for his personal collection, the Sinnersdirector made a beeline for Following, the ultra-low-budget debut from Christopher Nolan, and used the opportunity to thank Nolan for shaping not just his career, but the industry at large.

“This is my guy,” Coogler said, holding up the Criterion copy of Nolan’s 1998 film. “I’ve come to know him. I’ve come to know his wife, [producer] Emma Thomas. Amazing people."

"First and foremost, they’re just lovers of cinema, and lovers of family. The world is richer because they’re making movies. It’s just brilliant because it’s obviously the most indie you’ll ever see… Mr. Nolan, he’s finding his way. A lot of the Christopher Nolan trademarks are here in this movie.

Ryan Coogler: Christopher Nolan Makes the World ‘Richer’ Through His Films
Image
Ryan Coogler is thanking fellow filmmaker Christopher Nolan for not only inspiring him, but also making the world a better place thanks to Nolan’s art. “Sinners” director Coogler selected Nolan’s directorial debut “Following” while visiting the Criterion Closet in the below video, and couldn’t help but praise Nolan for changing cinema.

“This is my guy. I’ve come to know him. I’ve come to know his wife [producer Emma Thomas]. Amazing people,” Coogler said. “First and foremost, they’re just lovers of cinema, and lovers of family. The world is richer because they’re making movies.”

Coogler added that Nolan is a “mentor of mine,” no doubt since they both share indie filmmaking roots, have gone on to helm large IP installments (the “Black Panther” and “Dark Knight” respective trilogies), and also direct original blockbusters. The duo also champion IMAX technology.

Image
One of the most acclaimed directors of the 21st century will be heading to Ancient Greece next year with Universal Pictures' The Odyssey, the next big project from Christopher Nolan. However, a stunt performer on the project has recently shed a little bit of light on what filming is like for the high-profile outing, which stars a slew of A-listers led by Matt Damon.

Stunt performerJames Newman spoke of his time on the film during a recent episode of the Action for Everyone podcast. "They found locations and Nolan would go like, 'Okay, this cave, has anyone ever filmed here before?' And the local guy is like, 'No.' [Nolan] is like, 'Okay, great, we're going to film here.' Ryan Coogler expresses his gratitude for the overwhelming audience response to Sinners
Image
Sinners has been building hype ever since Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan had studios discreetly read their script in a supervised session. Then, studios began a bidding war for a film that no one knew details about, except that it was a “genre movie.” That genre turned out to be a period vampire film and audiences turned out for Sinners this past week with a huge positive response and rave reviews. In his review, our own Chris Bumbray says, “It’s good enough that I can’t help but hope Coogler eventually parts ways with the MCU (after his next Black Panther flick), as he seems better off playing in his own sandbox. Given the right resources and support, Sinners might be the beginning of a whole new chapter for one of our most exciting, emerging filmmakers.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer and director Ryan Coogler wrote a...

Ryan Coogler Expresses “Eternal Gratitude” After ‘Sinners’ Box Office Success: “Your Response to the Film Has Invigorated Me”
Image
Ryan Coogler is expressing his “eternal gratitude” following the successful box office debut of his latest movie, Sinners.

The filmmaker penned an emotional letter to those who went to the theater this past week to watch the film, starring Michael B. Jordan. The horror pic follows twin brothers who return to their hometown to start again, trying to leave their troubled lives behind, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

“Eternal gratitude. My heart is bursting with it,” Coogler’s letter read. “I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see Sinners. Who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterward and talked and made a friend. Ryan Coogler Reacts to ‘Sinners’ Box Office Victory in Thank You Letter to Fans: ‘Your Response to the Film Has Re-Invigorated Me’
Image
“Sinners” director Ryan Coogler has penned an emotional open letter thanking fans for showing up in droves to see the film in theaters, writing that his heart is “bursting” with “eternal gratitude.”

Coogler’s movie, starring Michael B. Jordan as the Smokestack twins, won the weekend, grossing $48 million domestically and $63 million globally.

The only way they got to that figure, the filmmaker writes, was thanks to the fans who bought a ticket: those “who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterwards and talked and made a friend. Who changed their work schedules. Who saw the film in groups. … who watched more than once, who recommended the film to others, both in person and on social media or on your text message chains.”

The Animated Batman Movie You Didn't Know Was A Prequel To The Dark Knight
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If you're a Batman fan (or even if you aren't), you must've heard of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" Trilogy. Led by Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, these three movies — "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," and "The Dark Knight Rises" — have raised the bar for every Batman movie made since. But are there truly only three Dark Knight movies?

The 2008 animated feature "Batman: Gotham Knight" was released as a tie-in to "The Dark Knight." Warner Bros. sold the film as a prequel to their new blockbuster, set between "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight."

"Gotham Knight" is not a single-feature, but an anthology of six shorts, each one with a different director and writer. The six shorts lead into each other, forming a narrative thread but still an episodic one. The shorts, which offer treats for both Batman and anime fans,...

Why The Sinners Credits Include A 'Special Thanks' To Christopher Nolan
Image
It's somewhat rare for a horror movie to be treated like a must-see cinematic event on the level of an "Avengers" film. We're talking about the likes of 2017's "It" and Jordan Peele's "Us," i.e. the biggest of big that the genre has to offer. Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker behind "Black Panther" and "Creed," has now managed to position his new vampire movie "Sinners" as one of these blockbuster-level cinematic events, and with good reason. Indeed, "Sinners" is one of the most acclaimed films of 2025 overall thus far.

Given the sheer impact that "Sinners" has had, particularly after its blockbuster box office debut, it perhaps seems fitting that the king of the modern blockbuster, Christopher Nolan, was given a "special thanks" shout-out in the movie's credits. But why, exactly, did Coogler thank the "Dark Knight" and "Oppenheimer" director? That's a good question. Put simply, Nolan helped Coogler get...

The Odyssey: Robert Pattinson's Role in Christopher Nolan Epic Reportedly Revealed
Image
As Christopher Nolan's historical thriller, The Odyssey, runs deep into production, more information is coming out about which characters the upcoming tentpole's A-list cast will play. The latest report seemingly reveals who Robert Pattinson will portray in the epic action fantasy film.

According to the Italian magazine, Chi (via ComicBookMovie.com), Pattinson is set to portray Hermes in The Odyssey, which has been in principal photography since late February. In ancient Greek mythology, Hermes was a mischievous deity known as the messenger and herald of the ancient gods, typically guiding souls to the underworld. Hermes was also associated with many things, including thieves, travel, fertility, luck and animal husbandry.

Pattinson boarded The Odyssey last November, joining a star-studded cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron and John Leguizamo. Pattinson previously worked with Nolan on the 2020 sci-fi action thriller, Tenet, and...

Sinners: Michael B. Jordan Dances With the Devil in Fiery IMAX Trailer
Image
Sinners, the latest collaboration between star Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler, promises some bone-chilling moments as the supernatural horror film takes things to an extreme, vintage style. The period drama's IMAX trailer shows Jordan's twin protagonists proverbially dancing with the devil, setting up their inevitable faceoff with the undead.

On Mar. 26, Warner Bros. released a new IMAX trailer for Sinners. The latest preview shows Jordan's central characters, twin brothers Smoke and Stack, throwing an event in their native Mississippi, where they indulge in a good time and get wild with some women they encounter. However, an ominous voice warns that "you keep dancing with the devil, one day he's gonna follow you home," suggesting there's more to the people the brothers interact with than meets the eye. The trailer then turns up the heat, showing a burned-down house and a lit lamp with someone saying "Peekaboo" with bad intentions.

John Leguizamo Says Christopher Nolan Makes ‘The Odyssey’ Feel ‘Like an Indie Film’: ‘He’s Not Doing It by What the Studio Says’
Image
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film has by no means, a small premise. An adaptation of the classic “The Odyssey,” the film includes a large cast of some of the biggest Hollywood stars. But cast member John Leguizamo says Nolan still manages to make the production feel like an independent film.

“Dude, you know the thing is, okay he’s got a crazy budget, it’s not small, but he runs [it] like an indie film because he’s not doing it by committee, he’s not doing it by what the studio says,” Leguizamo said in a recent interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“He’s like an indie filmmaker but with crazy money,” he added.

“The Odyssey” stars Matt Damon as Odysseus in a cast that also includes Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie and Jon Bernthal.

Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
If you’re a fan of cinema, you’ll know the name Christopher Nolan. The director is one of the very few modern filmmakers who still gets to bring bold, creative visions to life on a blockbuster scale. The reigning champ of the intellectual box office hit, Nolan has enjoyed a storied career in Hollywood thanks to his consistency in producing pulse-pounding cinema that also has the capacity to make you think. His obsession with the theme of time, invisible special effects, and multi-layered plot structures have dazzled film viewers for decades at this point.

Nolan studied English Literature, believe it or not, at University College London. While at university, he was the president of the Film Society and met his wife and future producing partner, Emma Thomas, on campus. His first feature film was 1998’s “Following,” but his career really took off with the groundbreaking “Memento” (2000). The Guy Pearce...

You can get a peek at Bernthal and Holland’s characters below.

When translated to English, the post reads,

Amazon MGM’s Best Bet to Protect James Bond’s Legacy: Hire Christopher Nolan
Image
In the wake of Amazon’s surprise acquisition of creative control over the James Bond franchise from longtime stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the e-commerce giant faces a critical choice: What filmmaker will guide 007 into its new era?

There might be no time to die, but for Amazon, the right choice might be worth waiting for.

According to half a dozen industry insiders that spoke to TheWrap, Christopher Nolan remains both the top choice and the perfect filmmaker to reinvigorate Bond. Last week, another outlet reported that Nolan almost came close to directing a Bond movie after “Tenet,” yet he opted to direct “Oppenheimer” instead because Barbara Broccoli wouldn’t grant him final cut. Nolan is currently filming Universal’s “The Odyssey” which is set for theatrical release on July 17, 2026, so Nolan’s schedule might not align with Amazon’s immediate plans, but waiting for him to complete...

‘Anora’ Best Picture Oscar Win Makes Sean Baker and Samantha Quan the 4th Married Couple to Take Top Prize
Image
For the second consecutive year, the Best Picture Oscar has been all in the family.

Husband and wife Sean Baker and Samantha Quan have earned statuettes for producing the comedy-drama “Anora,” one year after spouses Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas won the same award for “Oppenheimer.”

Baker and Quan, who shared the award with producer Alex Coco, are the fourth — or fifth, technically; see the “Lord of the Rings” team below — romantic partners to score the Oscar’s most coveted prize.

Julia Phillips was the first female producer to ever win Best Picture, 51 years ago, for the 1973 mystery drama “The Sting,” which she produced alongside Tony Bill and her then-husband Michael Phillips. They divorced the same year as their Oscar win, but continued to work together, producing “Taxi Driver” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

Phillips wrote the brutal, blistering and best-selling memoir “You’ll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again,...

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey: Everything We Know So Far
Image
What do you do when you’ve been to the vast reaches of space, reversed the temporal flow, ventured into the dreamscape – and, most importantly, swept the Oscars? With a three-hour, doom-laden, politically-driven historical drama, no less? In the wake of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan could do basically anything. His choice: go full Homer with an adaptation of epic Greek poem The Odyssey. It should add a new quiver to the legendary director’s bow – his first swords-and-sandals epic, possibly his first fantastical film, and one that brings him a new leading man.

With pre-production rapidly ramping up on Nolan’s next movie, here’s what we know so far:

Tom Holland is said to be the lead

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Tom Holland on our screens – following Uncharted and Apple TV drama The Crowded Room, he’s been treading the boards on the West End in Romeo & Juliet.

Michael B. Jordan's Horror Movie 'Sinners' Features More Than Just Vampires, Ryan Coogler Reveals
Image
In Ryan Coogler's upcoming horror movie, Sinners, vampires won't be the only supernatural forces Michael B. Jordan will have to contend with. The latest trailer for the 1930s set horror flick, which also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jayme Lawson, and Jack O'Connell, revealed even more (maybe too much?) of the gruesome action and thrills in store when the film hits theaters on April 18. While vampires are the main focus of the movie, the newest teaser promised more supernatural mysteries, which Ryan Coogler recently delved into.

Speaking at a virtual press conference for Sinners (via The Hollywood Reporter), Ryan Coogler teased that Sinners is about a lot more than the devilish vampires, played by O'Connell and Steinfeld. "The film is very genre fluid," Coogler began. "It switches in and out of a lot of different genres. Yes, vampires are an element, but it’s not the only supernatural element in the movie.

In the latest trailer for Ryan Coogler's upcoming horror film Sinners, audiences got the first real glimpse at the vampires featured in the film.
