Time Travel is Dangerous (2024) Review
Image
As films like The Terminator, The Time Machine, Looper, Edge of Tomorrow, Back to the Future 2 and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 have proven, going backwards and forwards across history or into the far future can be perilous to both personal and universal health. But it has taken until now for a movie to say it out loud, and that movie is the brilliant British comedy Sci-Fi usurpingly titled Time Travel is Dangerous.

The set up is simple enough and starts when two friends Ruth and Megan find a time travel machine by the bins behind their vintage shop in Muswell Hill. The scientific marvel, which is actually a modified dodgem, takes them on jaunts across history where they pilfer anything they can from the bemused locals of the past to sell in their shop. Seemingly onto a great thing the pals are oblivious not only to how the time...

‘Time Travel Is Dangerous’ Review
Image
Stars: Ruth Syratt, Megan Stevenson, Brian Bovell, Stephen Fry, Johnny Vegas, Sophie Thompson, Guy Henry, Jane Horrocks, Mark Heap, Tony Way | Written by Chris Reading, Anna-Elizabeth, Hillary Shakespeare | Directed by Chris Reading

Time Travel Is Dangerous is about to become your new favourite British sci-fi comedy blending mockumentary stylings with surreal, low-budget charm. Directed by Chris Reading and co-written with Anna-Elizabeth and Hillary Shakespeare, the latter two of those names, are no strangers to this reviewer.

Time Travel Is Dangerous stars Ruth Syratt and Megan Stevenson as fictionalized versions of themselves, running a vintage shop in Muswell Hill. The premise is delightfully absurd: the duo stumbles upon a discarded fairground dodgem that just so happens also to be a time machine, which they use to “borrow” historical artefacts to sell in their shop, as time travel movies have told us in the past though this has catastrophic consequences due to...

‘Time Travel Is Dangerous!’ Comes to Muswell Hill to Hit the Big Screen
Image
Time loops, Victorian lamps, and a dangerously unpredictable time machine take centre stage at an exclusive gala screening of Time Travel Is Dangerous at Everyman Muswell Hill on 27th March. The sci-fi comedy, which explores the perils of ‘borrowing’ from history, will be celebrated with a special event featuring a Q&a with the cast and filmmakers, followed by a post-screening drinks reception in the main foyer.

The film follows best friends Ruth and Megan, who run a vintage shop in Muswell Hill. When they stumble upon a time machine, their business takes an unexpected turn as they decide to “source” their stock directly from the past. Rather than using their newfound ability to change history or amass wealth, they simply want to get their hands on the perfect Victorian lamp or an authentic 80s bum bag. However, as they soon discover, tampering with time is a risky game, and The Unreason,...

Best friends Ruth and Megan run a vintage shop in Muswell Hill, North London. Stumbling across a time machine, they embark on trips to the past to stock their shop with no idea of the irreparable damage that they're causing to the fabric of the universe. Time Travel Is Dangerous | UK film lands March cinema release
Machine (2017)
A time machine is Muswell Hill? Time Travel Is Dangerous lands a March release in the UK, and there’s a trailer for it here too.

Popping up on our list of films we’re really keen to see this year is the British production Time Travel Is Dangerous. Directed by Chris Reading, who penned the script with Anna Elizabeth Shakespeare and Hillary Shakespeare, it’s a comedy headlined by Sophie Thompson, Johnny Vegas, Jane Horrocks, Mark Heap and Tony Way, with Stephen Fry narrating.

It’s a mockumentary, with a time machine ending up in the hands of, well, two people it’s best not to give a time machine to. A concept that the film appears to be having an awful lot of fun with.

The film debuted at festivals in 2024, and it’s lovely to see it getting a UK cinema release, courtesy of Jade Films. I...

Exclusive Video Interview: Director Chris Reading Discusses ‘Time Travel Is Dangerous’
Image
At FrightFest Halloween, we caught up with director Chris Reading to discuss Time Travel Is Dangerous, which received its UK premiere at the event. Reading previously directed Somnus and the Alien Anniversary short film titled Alien: Containment, and he wrote the script for Time Travel Is Dangerous alongside Anna-Elizabeth Shakespeare and Hillary Shakespeare.

Time Travel Is Dangerous focuses on the real-life antique shop known as Cha-Cha-Cha in Muswell Hill, with the two women who run the shop discovering a time machine which allows them to retrieve priceless items from the past. However, their meddling in past events soon leads to disastrous consequences, as they unwillingly disrupt the fabric of the universe and open a gateway to a sinister reality which could harm everything they hold dear. The film stars the real-life owners of the shop, Ruth Syratt and Megan Stevenson as themselves, with the supporting cast including Sophie Thompson, Guy Henry,...

Nanny McPhee | Emma Thompson’s film to be adapted for the West End stage in 2026
Emma Thompson
Emma Thompson’s hit family film Nanny McPhee will be adapted for the West End stage in 2026.

While Emma Thompson has had a phenomenally successful career as an actor – we’re just coming up to the time of year where people watch her character cry to a Joni Mitchell song in Love Actually – she has arguably had just as much success behind the camera, winning an Oscar for her screenplay for Ang Lee’s 1995 big screen version of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.

In 2005, she wrote and starred in Nanny McPhee, a fun family film based on the Nurse Matilda character by Christianna Brand. It follows a group of unruly kids who are put right by Thompson’s titular nanny, who uses her magic walking stick to teach life lessons. The sequel, Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, arrived in 2010, this time set during the Second World War.

Breaking Baz: Emma Thompson’s Child-Minding Witch ‘Nanny McPhee’ Stage Musical Aims For London’s West End In 2026
Image
Exclusive: The Emma Thompson-penned musical adaptation of fantasy movie Nanny McPhee, about a witch who possesses magical powers wielded through her walking stick, is being primed to hit London’s West End in 2026, Deadline can reveal.

Oscar-winner Thompson, songwriter Gary Clark and Working Title’s stage division have been developing the production, based on the 2005 film directed by Kirk Jones, which starred Thompson in the title role, on and off for over a decade.

Olivia Colman played the snaggle-toothed nanny at an early workshop in London of the musical in 2018. This was confirmed to me at the time by Thompson, who praised Colman’s “wonderful” performance. Lily James and Rory Kinnear also took part in the original workshop. Sophie Thompson participated in later test-runs.

Colman has not been involved in subsequent run-throughs, but that doesn’t rule out her possible involvement in the West End.

Every Single Inside No. 9 Episode Was an Easter Egg in the Series Finale
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Inside No. 9 “Plodding On”.

Look carefully at the end credits for Inside No. 9 finale “Plodding On” and in among the names of the many, many previous guest stars who came back to send the anthology show on its way is one puzzling entry. Between Denis Lawson from “A Quiet Night In” and Rula Lenska from “The Devil of Christmas” is the name: Europa Lepus. You won’t find them on IMDb because Europa Lepus is not an actor but a form of Latin for the European Hare. That’s right, not content with hiding a statue of a hare inside every one of its 55 episodes, Inside No. 9 also hid a hare in its finale end credits.

That level of commitment to Easter eggs went even further for the finale. Visit the cryptic crossword published by The Guardian newspaper on the day the finale...

The Reverend pays a visit to the Dunn household in the TV Insider exclusive clip from Belgravia: The Next Chapter Episode 3, coming out on Sunday, January 28 at 9/8c on MGM+. In it, the grieving widow Mrs. Dunn (Sophie Thompson) takes a special interest in who James will marry, embarrassing her daughter in front of her crush. But here’s the kicker: Emily doesn’t trust her sister, Clara’s, relationship with Frederick Trenchard, but she has no idea that James is Frederick’s brother.

Belgravia: The Next Chapter Sneak Peek Introduces a Different World
Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Cynthia Nixon, Louisa Jacobson, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, and Denée Benton in The Gilded Age (2022)
With Downton Abbey over and The Gilded Age wrapping up its freshman season, MGM+ will host the creative teams' next show.

As previously reported, Belgravia: The Next Chapter premieres on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

While the series is dubbed the next chapter in the Belgravia franchise, the show starts with a new crop of characters that makes it easy to tune in without watching the original.

TV Fanatic scored an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip that showcases what life's like in 1871 for the characters and even hints at some links to the original series.

We won't spoil what the clip reveals, but there are sentiments from the new cast members and writer Helen Edmundson.

Belgravia: The Next Chapter tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn (Harriet Slater), a beautiful newcomer to London society.

Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother,...

‘SisterS’ Review: Sarah Goldberg Makes Ireland-Set IFC Comedy a Sibling Journey Worth Taking
Image
Since the writers strike began, I’ve seen an uptick in repostings of the season 3 Barry scene in which a streaming service executive (Elizabeth Perkins) attempts to explain to Sarah Goldberg’s Sally why her newly released show is being canceled. The sequence, which places the blame on a nefarious algorithm, hits home as more than just an accurately observed piece of absurdity because of how good Goldberg is at playing both the ridiculousness and the plausibility of the moment.

I get happy whenever the scene gets passed around because although Barry is far from underrated or insufficiently acclaimed, if any element of the brooding Hollywood hitman comedy has failed to receive its proper due, it’s Goldberg. Sure, she has a single Emmy nomination, but that doesn’t feel like enough for a performance that has often anchored the entire series. That’s very much been the case in...

Silo Review: A Post-Apocalyptic Neo-Noir That Thrives On Intrigue And Steady World-Building
Image
Apple TV+ is quietly cornering the market on high-quality literary adaptations; the streamer may be best-known for original series like "Ted Lasso," but its adaptation game is surprisingly strong. From standouts like "Pachinko," "Foundation," and "Black Bird" to more polarizing offerings like "Lisey's Story," "Defending Jacob," and "The Essex Serpent," the streamer is constantly fine-tuning the art of the page-to-screen projects. The latest book adaptation from them is especially ambitious, and it's a risk that largely pays off. The 10-episode first season of "Silo," based on Hugh Howey's bestselling novel series, builds a somber yet thrilling world from the ground up — or, in the case of the titular structure, from the ground down.

"Silo" starts with a searingly great premise: a group of roughly 10,000 people is housed in an underground silo, at least 140 years removed from some sort of society-shaking event. Details about the silo's history are cloudy (for...

‘Belgravia: The Next Chapter’: Harriet Slater, Ben Wainwright, Elaine Cassidy Among 9 Cast In Julian Fellowes’ MGM+ Sequel Series
Image
Exclusive: MGM+ has set cast for Belgravia: The Next Chapter, Julian Fellowes’ sequel series to the hit historical drama. Harriet Slater, Ben Wainwright, Edward Bluemel, Claude Perron and Elaine Cassidy are set as series regulars in the drama series executive produced by Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant. Additionally, Toby Regbo, Hannah Onslow, Sophie Thompson and Sophie Winkleman will recur in the eight-part series. Filming is underway in the UK with premiere set for winter 2023.

The Next Chapter is a continuation of Belgravia, named for and set in the affluent London district that became synonymous with the upper echelons of London society in the 19th century.

Belgravia: The Next Chapter picks up in 1871, three decades after the events depicted in the 2020 limited series, which was written by Fellowes and based on his novel of the same name. Developed and written by playwright and screenwriter Helen Edmundson, the series tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard (Wainwright), who has grown up as the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn (Slater), who is a newcomer to London society. Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother Susan and the scoundrel John Bellasis, a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his courtship of and marriage to Clara.

Slater’s Clara Trenchard (née Dunn) is a young, smart, and striking woman, and a fresh face amongst the society of Belgravia, Clara is thrilled by her marriage to the enigmatic Frederick … but as she comes to learn more of her husband and the trauma he carries, Clara finds her marriage will not be as smooth as she first thought and is something she must fight for.

Wainwright’s Frederick Trenchard, the young and handsome third Lord Trenchard, Frederick takes after his grandfather with a ferocious work ethic, having built a large business empire. Immediately smitten with Clara, he marries her after a whirlwind romance, but brings with him traumas from his past that threatens his newfound happiness.

Hannah Onslow, Sophie Thompson, Sophie Winkleman and Toby Regbo

Bluemel plays Dr. Stephen Ellerby. An idealistic, charming, and attractive young doctor, Stephen is brought into the society of Belgravia as he cares for Peter, son of the Duke of Rochester—a far cry from his life amongst the bohemians of Bloomsbury. He is quickly captivated by Clara after meeting her and starts to gain her trust as their lives interweave.

Regbo plays Rev. James Trenchard, Frederick’s estranged brother. A gentle, kind and religious man, James is haunted by both the separation from his brother and a private battle he is determined to keep hidden.

Onslow portrays Emily Dunn, Clara’s older sister. Emily responds to her sister’s swift marriage with a hint of jealousy as she is desperate to make her own match. But when she throws herself into charity work at her new church, she is instantly attracted to the Reverend James Trenchard.

Thompson plays Mrs. Dunn, Emily and Clara’s devoted mother. Mrs Dunn is a nervous, giddy, and chatty widow who has moved to Belgravia with her daughters and is thrilled by Clara’s new marriage and the security in social standing it brings.

Perron plays The Marquise D’Étagnac, a glamorous and highly unconventional French businesswoman, who is introduced to Belgravia by the Duke and Duchess of Rochester. Offering a wealth of business opportunities, Frederick sees a chance to expand into new areas of industry.

Winkleman portrays Duchess of Rochester. The queen of Belgravia, the Duchess and her husband stand at the top of Belgravia’s social hierarchy – but privately, she struggles to reconcile the Duke’s feelings towards their unwell, eldest son Peter with her own wishes for his care.

Cassidy plays Davison. Clara’s newly appointed lady’s maid, Davison grows to protect her mistress with a fierce devotion, recognizing Clara’s youth and need for love. Davison has experienced hard times in her own past and is intent on supporting Clara through her struggles.

Led by Neame, the series reunites Carnival’s award-winning creative team behind the original series. Neame and Marchant will serve as executive producers with Fellowes and Joanna Strevens. Helen Edmundson serves as showrunner and executive producer. The series will be directed by John Alexander, Paul Wilmshurst and Marisol Adler. Colin Wratten (Killing Eve) who produced the original series, will return as producer.

Belgravia: The Next Chapter is a Carnival Films co-production with MGMPlus Studios and will be distributed by NBCUniversal Global Distribution. Carnival Films is part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Wainwright’s recent credits include great roles on Sky Atlantic’s Gangs of London, and a guest lead on BBC One’s The Split. He also has a multi-episode arc on the BBC One series World on Fire, starring opposite Sean Bean and Lesley Manville. Wainwright is represented by Insight Management & Production.

Bluemel is currently filming a leading role in Amazon’s My Lady Jane, starring Emily Bader. He’ll next be seen in Hulu miniseries Washington Black, set for premiere this year. Bluemel is repped by Epilogue.

Zesty Brit Hit ‘Everything I Know About Love’ Mixes Pleasure with Wisdom: TV Review
Image
The success of “Fleabag” loosed a glut of shows about young women tottering – heels broken, mascara smeared – in the vague direction of adult responsibility. Few have been as purely enjoyable as “Everything I Know About Love,” Dolly Alderton’s adaptation of her own memoir, which debuts on Peacock this week after winning plaudits on the BBC in midsummer.

With its photogenic cast, pyjama-party vibe and commitment to steering its characters towards better things, this Working Title-produced, London-set miniseries should provide superior comfort TV for anyone constitutionally unable to face Nathan Fielder’s postmodern provocations or the carnage of a “Game of Thrones” prequel. It’ll be only more comforting the more years you have on the show’s fresh-faced principals.

Alderton’s onscreen surrogate is Maggie Marshall (Emma Appleton), encountered just before the 2012 Olympics as a flighty 24-year-old blogger with a thrusting new beau in porkpie hat-sporting, multiple red flag-raising...

Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton in Bridgerton (2020)
Everything We Know About Netflix’s ‘Persuasion’ Adaptation
Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton in Bridgerton (2020)
Thanks to shows like “Bridgerton” and “The Gilded Age” (not to mention this year’s Met Gala theme), it seems that we’re entering a bit of a Jane Austen-inspired renaissance — not that fans of the renowned novelist went anywhere. Next up on the list of Regency-era projects is Netflix’s highly anticipated cinematic adaptation of the author’s final novel, “Persuasion,” starring Dakota Johnson.

In late April, the streamer released a set of first-look photos featuring Johnson as heroine Anne Elliot, an overlooked middle daughter who is nonetheless incredibly insightful and clever — if only easily persuaded. Surrounded by her entitled and self-involved relatives, she is once again on her own when faced with the return of the dashing, self-made Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), with whom she broke off her engagement nearly a decade prior at the behest of those around her deeming it a degrading match.

‘Love, Simon’ Writer Becky Albertalli’s ‘The Upside of Unrequited’ to Be Adapted for Film (Exclusive)
Image
U.K. production company Shakespeare Sisters has acquired the film rights to the popular YA novel “The Upside of Unrequited,” written by best-selling scribe Becky Albertalli. The author’s debut novel, “Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” was adapted as the gay teen romantic comedy movie “Love, Simon,” which – distributed by 20th Century Fox – grossed $66 million worldwide, and inspired the Hulu spin-off series “Love, Victor.”

The movie adaptation of “The Upside of Unrequited” will be written and directed by Hillary Shakespeare and Anna-Elizabeth Shakespeare, who are best known for their recent coming-of-age film “Soundtrack to Sixteen.” Albertalli also joins as executive producer on the feel-good summer romance.

The story centers on awkward 17-year-old Molly, who has had 26 crushes and exactly zero kisses. She’s sure love confessions can only go one way for weight-challenged girls: utter humiliation. Now that her twin Cassie is swept up in her first romance, Molly has never felt more alone.

Mae Martin and Charlotte Ritchie in Feel Good (2020)
‘Feel Good’ Review: Netflix’s Lively Queer Addiction Comedy Has ‘Fleabag’ Vibes
Mae Martin and Charlotte Ritchie in Feel Good (2020)
Mae is an addict. It doesn’t matter that she’s been in recovery for “a long time,” as she vaguely assures her new girlfriend, she will always be an addict. That’s what the eccentric folks at her wildly unhinged Narcotics Anonymous meetings tell her, anyway. Her erratic behavior, which includes burning all her possessions in a trash can and saran-wrapping her phone inside a suitcase so she won’t text her girlfriend too much, makes a pretty strong case for the argument.

Anyone in recovery will tell you that addiction is about so much more than substance abuse. Even once sober, addicts substitute obsession with the high found with another obsession. That’s the savvy central tenet of “Feel Good,” a wildly entertaining breath of fresh air of a series arriving on Netflix just in the nick of time. Hilariously crafted, thrillingly paced, and brimming with the kind...

In the new Netflix romantic dramedy Feel Good, Mae falls in love with George. Mae (Mae Martin) is a Canadian living abroad, a comedian and a recovering addict who is effectively homeless. George (Charlotte Ritchie) is an English teacher, and has not only never dated another woman before, but is so terrified of having friends or family ask her questions about it that she literally makes Mae hide in a closet in one episode.

That’s a lot of darkness to throw at any new relationship, and that’s before...

Frightfest 2019: ‘Tales From the Lodge’ Review
Stars: Mackenzie Crook, Laura Fraser, Sophie Thompson, Johnny Vegas, Kelly Wenham, Dustin Demri-Burns | Written and Directed by Abigail Blackmore

A group of middle-aged friends gather at a remote lodge to honour a friend who recently drowned in a nearby lake. With emotions running high, everyone makes the most of a gloomy situation by celebrating the best way they know how: swapping silly, scary stories that would have earned a giggle from their dearly departed pal. Urban legends about a masked slasher, a paranormal ghost hunt and a post-apocalyptic wasteland soon lose their fun shock value as the sextet become stuck in a true terror tale that exposes dark secrets no one could have possibly foreseen.

Tales From the Lodge continues the very British tradition of the portmenteau horror – a genre that is synonymous with the UK horror industry of the 60s and 70s, companies like Hammer, Amicus and Tigon, and...
