I just watched an animated movie called Boys Go to Jupiter that was so weird and eccentric, I’m not sure I was in the right headspace to truly appreciate the experience until days later. Then came Ebony and Ivory, a film that might as well have “Nothing can prepare you” as its tagline, because I walked out of the screening asking myself, “What did we just watch?”
No, Ebony and Ivory is not a Hunter S. Thompson fever dream; it is a new film from writer/director Jim Hosking that cannot be labeled or quantified. Sure, “gonzo” seems like an appropriate term. Unhinged may be another. Though I am starting to think batsh*t crazy is more like it.

A lineup including Stephen Graham and Al Pacino seems wasted on this lavish, but hackneyed drama about the Italian artist
Some very cliched roistering, life-affirming wine-drinking, bourgeois-defying artistic shenanigans here from the veteran screenwriting couple Jerzy and Mary Olson-Kromolowski who have adapted a 1980 stage play, Modigliani by Dennis McIntyre, about the Italian sculptor and painter Amedeo Modigliani, known as Modi. Johnny Depp directs and perhaps sees his subject as a bohemian badass not unlike Hunter S Thompson, whom he played in Terry Gilliam’s 1998 movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – and perhaps not altogether unlike how he sees himself.
It is 1916 in Paris and the brutality of war is destroying the belle époque; Riccardo Scamarcio plays Modigliani, a brilliant, sensual but penniless artist facing poverty and casual antisemitism. Having got into a chaotic affray at a pompous posh restaurant – filmed like a deleted scene from Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers...

Directed by Patricia Arquette, Gonzo Girl is based on Cheryl Della Pietra’s book of the same name. Pietra briefly worked as an assistant to the father of Gonzo journalism, Hunter S. Thompson, and the experience, as she has described it, was ‘life-altering.’ She journaled her days living with Hunter, and ‘Gonzo Girl,’ as the name suggests, is directly inspired by her time as Hunter’s assistant. Gonzo journalism is all about the author/reporter becoming an integral part of the story they’re covering. They are essentially the protagonists, and the rules of traditional journalism are mostly disregarded. Hunter S. Thompson, one of the forefathers of the New Journalism movement, was responsible for the popularization of the Gonzo style.

It sounds like a horror story: a lauded Hollywood icon readies their directorial debut with an entertaining and deeply personal fact-based film, casts a slew of big names (including themselves), shoots on an indie budget, takes it all the way to the Toronto International Film Festival for its world premiere, and then (then!) opts to recut the entire thing in hopes of securing a buyer in our increasingly fraught film landscape.
That’s the story of Patricia Arquette’s “Gonzo Girl,” but while other filmmakers might view the experience as a nightmare, the worst possible scenario, a kick against creative freedom, the Oscar winner has a different take on the whole thing: what a neat opportunity.
“I feel so grateful to the producers and for this opportunity to go back in and continue to learn about the filmmaking process and be able to re-edit this movie,” Arquette told IndieWire over Zoom.

Gonzo Girl (2025) ‘Tribeca’ Movie Review: A Diluted Account of a Writer Trying to Find Her Own Voice
In Patricia Arquette’s “Gonzo Girl” (2025), a young writer takes up a job as an editorial assistant for an old, established author. Unlike him, she hasn’t found her own voice. So, this job is also her way of discovering it. That’s particularly difficult considering his strange working discipline. Besides, he holds more power in their toxic relationship. Yet, the film wants us to escape the usual perils of judgment about his character and expects us to reject a moralistic lens to scrutinize their dynamic. So, what follows is the young writer learning to be ‘gonzo’ like her boss.
“Gonzo Girl” marks Arquette’s feature directorial debut, which adapts Cheryl Della Pietra’s eponymous novel inspired by her experience of working with American journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson. The film offers a fictionalized account of their experiences through Alley Russo’s (Camila Morrone) eyes, who starts working for...

Move over, Hunter S. Thompson!
There’s a new (alleged) illicit substance enthusiast storming America’s campaign trails, and he’s (allegedly) been loading himself up with more mind-altering chemicals than the lost-and-found box at a Phish concert.
Yes, according to a new report from the New York Times, Elon Musk was “using drugs far more intensely than previously known” during his time with Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

A film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's zonked-out, gonzo 1971 autobiography "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" began in earnest as long ago as 1976. The story goes that Larry McMurtry signed on to adapt Thompson's unadaptable novel into a screenplay, but that the project fell apart. Several notable filmmakers each flirted with the idea of making a "Fear and Loathing" movie, including Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, and even famed animator Ralph Bakshi.
The film didn't make it to the big screen until 1998, when audiences were treated to an ultra-chaotic version directed by Terry Gilliam. Production on the 1998 version started six years earlier, in 1992, when Rhino Films (!) sought to produce a version directed by Lee Tamahori. Tamahori couldn't do it, however, as he was busy shooting either the lugubrious noir "Mulholland Falls" or the survivalist thriller "The Edge." Johnny Depp,...

One of the great things about Poker Face is the willingness of the creative team to poke fun at the industry. “Last Looks” embraces the wild world of entertainment as one of its characters falls in love with the idea of leaving her world behind. If Giancarlo Esposito and Katie Holmes might not be an obvious pairing, they make for an excellent springboard opposite Natasha Lyonne.

I said it once, and I’ll repeat it: Conan O’Brien Must Go is the series we need right now. It’s a big spoonful of “Coco” that goes down smooth—comfort food for living in a time and place where everything seems upside down. Right is wrong, and wrong is correct—but not when you have Conan O’Brien around.

As part of an essay cycle that roves the cinema of the 1990s for vestiges of intelligent life, Phillip Lopate identifies several attributes that typify the early style of writer turned directors: creatively interpolated exposition, admirably ham-fisted mise-en-scène, and skewedly erudite characters among them. The blistering dyad of movies that British author Bruce Robinson produced with HandMade Films in the late ’80s proudly manifests all of these, and adds one by way of aggressive underscoring: an acerbic worldview.
One can’t blame Lopate for overlooking this quality, as there’s nothing in the debuts of David Mamet or Paul Schrader on par with Robinson’s reckless piss and vinegar. House of Games and Blue Collar possess a crafty bleakness, to be sure, but a modern fable wherein the body of an advertising exec is commandeered by a sentient, puss-dribbling shoulder boil suggests unprecedented vocational spite. As with both Mamet and Schrader,...

Being a late-night TV host means dealing with some pretty big personalities. It can also mean giving in to unusual or bizarre demands, which Conan O'Brien learned about firsthand when he invited a dream guest on Late Night.
Getting guests on Late Night with Conan O'Brien wasn't easy in the early days. O'Brien was basically a complete unknown, and critics didn't portray the show as a place that any celebrity should be associated with.
But that changed as the years went on and O'Brien established himself as one of the best in the business. And Late Night's appeal to younger audiences gave Conan the freedom to request more guests he wanted to have on the show.
When Conan wanted the legendary Hunter S. Thompson to appear on Late Night, the notoriously elusive writer refused time and time again. However, Thompson finally agreed in 1997. But he had some lofty demands for O'Brien.

It cannot be understated how huge "Baywatch" was. It was a goofy show with lightweight drama, resting somewhere on a matrix that incorporated soap operas, "Gilligan's Island"-like sitcoms, and 1970s "jiggle" shows like "Charlie's Angels." The central appeal of "Baywatch" was, of course, witnessing attractive people in swimsuits running dramatically down the beaches of Los Angeles. David Hasselhoff's star stayed high in the sky thanks to "Baywatch," and many of his co-stars -- notably Pamela Anderson -- became world-famous.
"Baywatch" debuted in 1989 and ran a powerful 241 episodes over 11 seasons, finally drawing to a close in 2001. The final two seasons were relocated to Hawai'i, and the title of the show was changed to "Baywatch: Hawaii," even though it retained the same cast and premise.
Weirdly, as soon as "Baywatch" ended, its cultural clout dried up. "Baywatch" was almost instantly seen as a curio of the 1990s, and 2000s audiences...

Yep! Johnny Depp reportedly spent $3 million firing Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes from a cannon. Because that’s exactly what the gonzo journalist wanted.
“All I’m doing is trying to make sure his last wish comes true,” Depp once said (via The Guardian). “I just want to send my pal out the way he wants to go out.”

Fans of Johnny Depp have been watching his slow reintegration into Hollywood with interest in the years since his legal wrangling with Amber Heard came to a conclusion. While the actor has stayed away from the mainstream spotlight since then, he has been slowly building up a list of potential roles, one of which sees him playing Satan in the latest movie from visionary director Terry Gilliam. After a long period without any updates, it seems that the movie is still being worked on and is expected to start filming this year.
Originally entitled The Carnival at the End of Days, the film will now reportedly just run under the truncated title of Carnival. Considering Gilliam is behind such movies as The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus, the original title was not exactly out of character, but it looks like short and intriguing is now the name of the game.

It is relatively impossible for Amber Heard to recover from her reputation in recent years. After her very public trial with Johnny Depp and having her entire life laid bare for the world to see, the audiences made their judgment, and she was completely sidelined by the industry as a whole.

While the world no longer expects her to star in worthwhile projects, there was a time when she was an up-and-coming actress, trying to make a name for herself. Although her filmography isn’t specifically impressive, she did work with her Oscar-nominated ex-husband, who is known for being a part of masterpieces.

Heath Ledger’s Last Film Tribute (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Seventeen years ago, Heath Ledger’s sudden death in January 2008 shook the world. At just 28 years old, the actor was soon seen in an unforgettable performance as the maniacal criminal Joker in The Dark Knight. However, Christopher Nolan’s Batman flick wasn’t his final project.

Of course, the Groundhog Day star being who he is, nothing about Murray’s sit-down with Elvis Mitchell at a Park City restaurant remained low-key for long. “I got to be careful because both of the directors are here,” Murray said when asked what he liked about two films he has in the hopper. “I was a local hire,” the Saturday Night Live vet added of his roles in two upcoming films, The Friend and The Phoenician Scheme.
“I have to confess I’ve been lazy,” Murray went on to say of his bent of late toward independent movies like Grindstone and Roadside Attractions’ forthcoming Riff Raff. “I eat what lands in my mouth,” he stated...

Las Vegas four-piece and indie sleaze godfathers The Killers are practically immortalized for their contributions to mainstream indie rock in the aughts and onward. The group is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album Hot Fuss in early 2025, but The Killers are far from just a one-hit wonder.
Their discography is full of hits and each album has a certain acclaim in its own right. Among the band's long list of accomplishments, one controversial lyric stands as a top-tier The Killers lore. Quite apart from questions of its origin, the oft-maligned, grammatically imaginative lyric was the center-point of one of the band's biggest hits, which became the most streamed song on Spotify in 2008, and the first single released on the way to a triple-platinum album success, according to Far Out Magazine.

So you think all the Dei snowflake cucks have ruined comedy with their woke mind virus? You love those liberal tears when they get all hot and bothered by some "edgy" humor? Well, see how it's done by switching off your Tim Pool and Joe Rogan and turning to YouTube for a new, free stand-up comedy special from one of the best in the business. Doug Stanhope has a quasi-new hour, Discount Meat, that patches together a couple of shows with his Covid-era material that hasn't been released in a special yet. It somehow manages to be one of his funniest yet, and that's saying something.
If you like to mock Hannah Gadsby and feel like a big man, Stanhope's set will remind you that non-woke comedy is alive and well, and you don't get canceled even by joking about the most provocative things imaginable. He starts his set by asking,...

In May 1974, Gov. Jimmy Carter delivered a blistering Law Day address at the University of Georgia to a distinguished audience of lawyers and public officials, along with members of the press corps. Quietly preparing to run for the presidency two years hence, Carter decided to shake things up, forsaking the usual honorifics in favor of some startling remarks about the oppressive unfairness of American criminal justice. He forthrightly denounced a rigged and racist system that patently served the interests of the affluent and powerful at the expense of everyone else,...

Jimmy Carter, humanitarian, diplomat, and 39th president of the United States, died Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, after receiving hospice care, his son James E. “Chip” Carter III confirmed. He was 100.
“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” Chip Carter said in a statement. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. British writer/director Rich Peppiatt was convinced that Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap, the raucous stars of the Irish Oscar entry “Kneecap”, could play themselves in his biopic, along with their bandmate, Belfast schoolteacher DJ Próvai. They could: but it took a while to get the laissez-faire band on board. The end results have been smashing, from winning the Next audience award at Sundance 2024 to seven British Independent Film Awards including Best British Independent Film.
About five years ago, soon after Peppiatt moved to Belfast, escaping from his crying newborn one night, he caught rappers Kneecap at a local pub. “I was blown away by their stage presence, their charisma,” said Peppiatt on a Zoom call. “And not just that, they were so overtly political, they were throwing baggies of rock white powder into the crowd. They were snorting things on stage. It was ‘Ok, this is pretty out there,...

Mike Flanagan's decades-spanning Letterboxd list "Favorite Horror Movies" would make a great primer for new genre fans, but it also holds some hidden gems that may surprise seasoned viewers. 2013's Banshee Chapter is a startlingly effective sci-fi thriller that pushed the boundaries of found footage verite as the first movie released for the Oculus Rift. However, even fans without the groundbreaking VR rig are in for some major 2D scares in this clever, reality-warping fright fest.
Virtual reality seems like a natural next step for the found footage genre, which relies on a sense of documentary-like immersion. In addition to being shot with VR in mind, Banshee Chapter integrates historical realities like the notorious Project MKUltra, and a certain counterculture icon, to create an oddly convincing sci-fi fantasy that is every bit as frightening on the small screen as it is in the Oculus Rift.

Here’s why Johhny Depp hated working with Benicio Del Toro ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
While Johnny Depp was locked in, playing Hunter S. Thompson’s wild alter ego, Raoul Duke, with laser focus, del Toro was off the rails, diving headfirst into his chaotic method of acting as Dr. Gonzo. And let’s just say Depp didn’t precisely vibe with that—especially when del Toro’s unpredictable antics started messing with the flow on set.
Director Terry Gilliam spilled the tea in a 2019 interview with Far Out, revealing just how much tension there was between his two leading men. “Johnny knew exactly what he was doing, but Benicio was almost completely out of control,” Gilliam recalled. And that “out of control” vibe? Yeah, it didn’t sit well with anyone on set. Gilliam shared that the crew was frequently on edge with del Toro’s free-wheeling approach. “The continuity girl was shouting,...

Those who don't know the name of Hunter S. Thompson may still be aware of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the classic Terry Gilliam film adapted from Thompson's book of the same name, in which Johnny Depp played his exaggerated literary alias, "Roaul Duke". Considered to be one of the best writers of the 20th century, Thompson is something of a legend in American literature, credited with starting a new movement in journalism, and with a large majority of his books, from Fear and Loathing to Hells Angels, still in print to this day. Many fans know that Sons of Anarchy took inspiration from real-life motor clubs, but there may be some who don't realize the lengths that the show went to in trying to capture authenticity. Not only did many of the actors do their own riding, but some already had direct ties to motorcycle culture before joining the show. As it turns out, a few of these actors had ties to one club in particular, one that has garnered a controversial reputation over the years: the Hells Angels. Most of these actors only appeared in small guest appearances and recurring roles. However, there was one member-turned-actor who surprisingly played a larger role than all the rest.
Sons of Anarchy fans are sure to quickly recognize Labrava for having played Samcro member Happy Lowman throughout the entirety of the show's run, as well as for reprising the role as a guest star in the spin-off series,...

It could be any day, any night, any city, and Bill Murray could be there. Maybe this sad clown folk hero is hitting karaoke night or doing a frat’s dishes or crashing a kickball game or bartending at some random joint or giving a speech at a bachelor party or popping in for a wedding photo shoot. Bill Murray is that “fun” uncle, the loose one with no clear direction yet always grounded in…well, whatever he wants. Maybe he’ll show up, maybe he won’t. Maybe he’ll have a job this year, maybe he won’t bother. Maybe he’ll sock a male co-worker on the nose, maybe he’ll direct misconduct at a woman. Bill Murray is one unpredictable dude, his actions described as erupting “a trail of hysteria,” the man himself as “The Murricane.” Oh, and he’s made some of the greatest comedies,...

Exploring Johnny Depp’s Monthly Expenses (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Johnny Depp’s bank statements read like a blockbuster script. His wine budget alone could have bankrolled an indie flick—$30K a month for liquor flown in from around the globe. And as for travel? It was a whopping $200K-a-month private jet! But these extravagant numbers were only part of the story in Depp’s heated legal showdown with The Management Group (Tmg), the firm he claimed mismanaged his fortune.
Depp sued Tmg for $25M in a career-defining twist, accusing them of mismanagement, unauthorized loans, and overspending on services. But Tmg’s rebuttal? According to an episode of CNBC’s The Filthy Rich Guide, the management company claimed Depp’s appetite for excess was what drained his coffers. Tmg said their job was “keeping Depp financially solvent,” but the actor’s love for fine wine, fancy properties, and luxury toys couldn’t be tamed.

Sorry, Gladiator II (November 22) and Moana 2 (November 27), but I’m going all limited releases this month. Festival season has ended. Award season has begun (congrats to all Gotham nominees). So, while blockbuster sequels still populate most screens around town, they don’t possess the same real estate in cinephiles’ minds. We’re too busy trying to ensure we can say we knew *blank* was getting nominated all along.
Those lucky enough to live in NYC and LA can also take it one step further by hitting those one-week qualifying runs. While I’ll be holding those posters back for early 2025 when they open in more markets (if they even have official posters yet), that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a ton of quality artwork to choose from anyway.

Mubi is always good for a solid if familiar one-sheet and the one they’ve done for Bird is no exception.

Hunter S. Thompson is one of the most infamous gonzo journalists in American history, as he developed groundbreaking research on many fringe and cult societies that had yet to earn a public spotlight. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Thompsons writing was the character that he became. Thompson would often get into mischief and hold strange speaking engagements, ensuring that any new article would become an event that his fans would hold in heavy anticipation. Thompsons life has inspired many Hollywood interpretations, including Terry Gilliams 1998 adaptation of his memoir Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which starred Johnny Depp as the enigmatic author. While Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas helped introduce themes of counterculturalism to a younger audience, Thompsons story was first told in the 1980 biopic Where The Buffalo Roam, starring Bill Murray.

Humble Beginnings and Stardom Johnny Depp has always been a misfit even before he was an actor. When he was young, he didn’t plan to graduate high school, and ended up dropping out to become a musician. He was a guitarist for a band called the Kids. He and his band moved to Los Angeles. During his time in the band, he became a struggling musician, but ended up finding steady work as an actor since he was introduced to Nicolas Cage by his then-wife Lori Anne Allison. Nicholas helped Johnny to audition for Wes Craven for the low-budget horror film ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street.’ The film achieved international success since it scared its audiences and featured a memorable kill by showing a young Johnny Depp being brutally killed by the boogeyman, Freddy Krueger (played by Robert Englund). 1980s The following year, Johnny Depp starred in ‘Private Resort...

Johnny Depp’s bohemian fantasy Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness starts at full throttle, with the artist Amelio Modigliani (Riccardo Scamarcio) breaking up the Café Dome, then exiting on a trolley straight through their stained-glass window, smashing the Art Nouveau rosebuds to bits while still clutching an ice bucket with a souvenired bottle of champagne in it. A waiter pursues him through the smashed window, brandishing a meat cleaver. Seeing the knife, the gendarmes arrest him; Modi is home free.
As an art happening, it’s the kind of thing that is a thousand times more fun in the retelling than it would have been for the people picking glass out of their hair, let alone the ones who had to sweep up the mess afterward. Of course, they’re just the little people. Life as an impoverished artist wasn’t really an endless romp, either. Modi,...

Norm Macdonald passed away in 2021, but to quote Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (and that one episode of Seinfeld), he’s not really gone as long as we remember him.
Obviously, Macdonald left behind a huge body of work, not just his on-camera performances, but his writing as well. Like his 2016 book Based on a True Story: A Memoir, which, despite its title, was a mischievous fantasy that critics compared to the writing of Hunter S. Thompson.
Then there was Macdonald’s Twitter account (he obviously didn’t live to see it rebranded as “X”), which is quite the repository of material. Not just jokes, but poems, short fiction and personal anecdotes. There’s his lengthy account of the time he had a sleepover with Bob Dylan. Or his story about how Robin Williams, the “funniest man in the world,” calmed the “terrified” Macdonald before his first ever Letterman appearance,...

For a long time now, the names of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have receded from the public memory. In the aftermath of the 2022 Depp v Heard defamation trial, the respective parties who had been at war since December 2018 finally subsided into their own corners of the Earth, enjoying a life only luxury can buy.

“We like crime shows, at least some of us do,” writer and producer Chris Brancato told IndieWire. “We like gangster shows. We like watching people do the things that we would never do ourselves. And yet, they’ve all been done a million times.”
His own oeuvre seems to support that — but only at first glance. The creator of “Narcos,” “Godfather of Harlem,” and now MGM+’s “Hotel Cocaine” would seem to have found a very buzzy (buzzed?) niche for himself as the prestige crime saga guy. But there’s more going on than just blow.
With “Narcos,” Brancato insisted to Netflix that the actors speak in Spanish, just as the real-life characters did. And “Godfather of Harlem” opened itself up to him once he discovered that Malcolm X was friends with crime boss Bumpy Johnson. Even after rumors of a Simpsons-esque dolphin fetish surfaced online, a story about J.D. Vance’s penchant for couch-humping continues to dog the vice presidential candidate. Sure the story is clearly untrue, but nobody seems to mind.
The joke’s longevity has now been further extended by Vance himself, after he made a comment about his wife forcing him to sleep on the couch. It’s unclear how many injuries were sustained by people frantically rushing to their devices to make jokes.
The Vance rumor clearly began as a joke, an easily-debunkable claim on social media that the 2016 book Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis contained a graphic remembrance of the time Vance got intimate with “an inside-out latex glove shoved between two couch cushions.” In retrospect, it’s too bad that we never got to see this scene brought to life by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard.

For many, watching Johnny Depp movies has become a fraught experience. Once touted as a quirky character actor with matinée idol good looks, Depp became an alt-sweetheart of outsiders and Goths everywhere, frequently taking on "weirdo" roles. He worked with strange filmmakers like John Waters and, most often, Tim Burton, mostly to strip away the pressures of being a Hollywood pretty-boy, determined to prove himself as a performer who prefers the fringe.
He was also seen, for many years, as a Hollywood "bad boy," and he struggled with alcoholism and drug-fueled violent outbursts. In 1989, he was arrested in Vancouver for getting violent with a security guard. In 1994, he was arrested again for trashing a hotel room and had to pay over $9,000 in damages. He was arrested once more in 1999 for fighting with paparazzi. In 2012, Depp's security guards were sued by an Irvine medical professor for roughing her up and handcuffing her.

In the spirit of such pics like Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Toad tells the tale of two naive slackers, Sam (played by James Paxton of Twisters and Rifkin’s western Last Train to Fortune) and Alex (Oliver Wyman of Feeling Randy), who are hired by a frightening cartel boss to deliver a cardboard box from LA to Vegas for the tidy sum of $10k. The boys think it’s their lucky day. Instructed not to look in the box, the duo can’t contain their curiosity and as soon as they drive off the property they pull over and have a peek.

When it premiered on Netflix, Narcos became a massive hit. Following the rise of Pablo Escobar as the most powerful drug lord in Latin America, the series came from co-creators Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro. Since the three-season series ended, we have gotten a Mexico-set spin-off and the promise of more. The creators have gone their separate ways with Miro running Netflix series Griselda, also based on a true story about the infamous title queenpin. Now, Brancato has reunited with Narcos director Guillermo Navarro for a new series, Hotel Cocaine, also inspired by a true crime tale but heavily fictionalized for a pulpy good time.
