Who Framed Roger Rabbit Director Says Jessica Rabbit Is The Main Reason We Still Haven't Seen A Sequel
Image
Jessica Rabbit is not bad - she's just drawn that way - but Who Framed Roger Rabbit director Robert Zemeckis believes the 'Toon femme fatale's curves might be a little too dangerous for Disney.

If you've never seen 1988's classic live-action/animation hybrid, you might be surprised (or even shocked) by how much risqué content was allowed to be featured in a PG-rated movie. There's kidnapping, voyeurism, drug use, a truly terrifying villain (Christopher Lloyd's Judge Doom), and the rather horrific murder of a cute cartoon shoe that traumatized an entire generation of kids.

Even so, Zemeckis feels that Roger's notoriously seductive wife, Jessica Rabbit (voiced by Kathleen Turner), is the main reason we still haven't seen a sequel.

While being interviewed for the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, the filmmaker was asked about a potential Who Framed Roger Rabbit follow-up.

"There's a good script [for a sequel] at Disney, but here's...

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Director Says Disney 'Would Never' Make the Movie Today
Image
While Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of the most beloved films of the 1980s, fans should not expect to see a sequel happening anytime soon. This is despite the director's claim that a quality screenplay has already been written for a follow-up film.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz (per Variety), Who Framed Roger Rabbit? director Robert Zemeckis commentend on the possibility of the movie finally getting a sequel. Zemeckis confirmed that there is a script for Roger Rabbit 2, but one major hurdle with getting the movie made is the inclusion of the fan favorite character Jessica Rabbit. According to Zemeckis, Jessica is just too provocative to be featured in a new film greenlit by Disney, as the director pointed to the edits made to her appearance at Disneyland. He then claimed that the original film was only made because he got very lucky with the timing.

Frank Sinatra, Christopher Lloyd, Kathleen Turner, Joanna Cassidy, Bob Hoskins, Jim Cummings, and Charles Fleischer in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
Years before Robert Zemeckis directed the revolutionary live-action/animated hybrid Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in 1988, an earlier version was mounted at Walt Disney Studios between 1981 and 1983, which had Darrell Van Citters set to direct. Today, an eight-minute video has been unearthed that shows John Culhane taking viewers behind-the-scenes of this unmade version, which featured Paul Reubens as the voice of Roger Rabbit and Russi Taylor as the voice of Jessica Rabbit.

The video also shows a number of concept art images, that show how vastly different the earlier versions of these characters were, and we have a few split-screen photos with the 1981-1983 artwork next to the finished characters from the 1988 film. Take a look at the video and photos, then read on for more information, where you'll see that one of the animators is Frozen and Surf's Up director Chris Buck.

Empire recently spoke with producer Don Hahn, who revealed that The Lion King is being readied for a 3D conversion. Here's an excerpt from the site's article.

"I'm actually trying to work out a 3D conversion of The Lion King. I'll be doing that when I go back to the States in a couple of weeks," he said, explaining that we shouldn't expect to see it for a while yet, since the Disney boffins are taking their time in making Simba, Zazu et al pop out of the screen. "It's going to be spectacular - we will do a good job for ya! The technology is tremendous. We did The Nightmare Before Christmas a few years ago and Tim thought it...
