A Rejected James Gunn Script Nearly Teamed Up Two Comedic Titans In The 1990s
Image
James Gunn seemingly reached the nerd mountaintop upon becoming the co-chairman (with Peter Safran) of DC Studios in 2022. Nearly 30 years before that, however, he was just another struggling screenwriter slugging it out in the film industry trenches. Gunn earned his first screenplay credit as the co-writer of Troma Entertainment's "Tromeo and Juliet," which was not the calling-card effort that put him on Hollywood's radar. That would be his script for "The Specials," a superhero comedy that became a film under the direction of Craig Mazin in 2000.

Before that film was even made, though, Gunn found himself pitching projects to the major studios, one of which was a Silver Surfer movie at 20th Century Fox. Gunn knocked out a treatment that he once claimed was a "huge story, cosmic as hell," and he might've hung around to write the screenplay had another project not been dropped on his doorstep.

In 1999, filmmaker Jay Roach,...

James Gunn Shares Disappointing Truth About the R-Rated Cut of a 2002 Family Movie
Image
James Gunn's original R-rated Scooby-Doo script was rejected, resulting in many adjustments and cuts before the film's release. Changes made to the movie included toning down scary monsters and modifying relationships between characters for a more family-friendly version. Although an R-rated version may no longer exist, Scooby-Doo continues to evolve with new projects, including a live-action Netflix TV show.

James Gunn was already known for delivering some brutal and gory R-rated movies by the time he wrote the 2002 live-action version of Scooby-Doo, and even though the Great Danes adventure could have joined the list, fans will never get to see the different version of the movie that didn't hit cinemas.

James Gunn Confirms Why R-Rated Cut of Scooby-Doo Will Never See the Light of Day
Image
The original cut of the live-action Scooby-Doo movie was rated R, resulting in some toning down to avoid the mature rating. For fans wanting to see the R-rated cut actually get released, writer James Gunn has shared an unfortunate update.

Apparently, the original cut of Scooby-Doo wasn't preserved and the footage has since been lost. On the social media platform Threads, Gunn was asked about the chances of the R-rated cut of Scooby-Doo getting released. In response, Gunn bluntly stated, "It no longer exists."

Matthew Lillard unites two of his iconic characters in honor of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 getting its release date.

Gunn confirmed back in 2017 that the film was originally given an R-rating, even sharing how one example of edits saw the digital removal of cleavage. However, Gunn doesn't look back at the project with any distaste.

Percy Jackson Episode 4’s New Monster Proves 1 Divisive Movie Replacement Wrong, 14 Years Later
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Percy Jackson season 1, episode 4 and minor spoilers for Rick Riordan's book series!

Percy Jackson season 1, episode 4 introduces the villains Echidna and the Chimera, proving that they should not have been replaced in the 2010 movie adaptation. The TV show effectively portrays the terrifying nature of Echidna and the Chimera, providing a compelling and scary battle for Percy. Including Echidna and the Chimera in the TV show expands on the franchise's mythology and avoids potential problems with future story set-ups.

The next stop on the titular demigod’s quest in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 4 introduces the villainous Echidna and her monster Chimera, who prove that the 2010 movie made a mistake in replacing them. Though Percy Jackson season 1 makes several book changes, the Disney+ series also has significant involvement from author Rick Riordan, which wasn’t the case for the 2010 and 2013 movie adaptations.

‘Percy Jackson’ Strikes Back: How Rick Riordan Defied Fox’s Failed Movies, Fought Racist Trolls and Finally Returned to Hollywood for Disney+ Series
Image
The next big thing in Hollywood was created by a middle school teacher from Texas. To his fans, he’s Uncle Rick.

In the crowd of a Los Angeles theater, where Uncle Rick has stopped on his most recent book tour, two teenage sisters gush that they drove for nearly two hours to make it here tonight — longer, when you account for parking — but it was worth it. Like Percy Jackson, the character that made Uncle Rick famous, the older sister has Adhd, while the younger sister never liked reading. And Percy also landed in Los Angeles on his very first quest. So by the logic set out in Uncle Rick’s books, these girls were born to be heroes.

“Here’s what I think is gonna happen,” the 15-year-old whispers. “He’s gonna pull me out of the audience and say, ‘I want you in my show.’” Her sister...

Gabrielle Union Tackles “Don’t Say Gay” Bill at Disney Premiere: “We Know Where Hate and Oppression Lead”
Image
One need only peek at advertisements for Disney’s new Cheaper by the Dozen to glean that this is not a paint-by-the-numbers reboot of a classic franchise.

Led by Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union, the Gail Lerner-directed film features a multicultural cast of actors who teamed to tell the story of the blended Baker family living, laughing and navigating all the challenges that come with life in present-day Los Angeles. Upon closer examination, the script, from Kenya Barris, Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry and Craig Titley, reveals how the creative team met those challenges head-on through scenes tackling racism, racial bias, depression, bullying and addiction, to name only a few.

“We’re blended racially, culturally, with a variety of different abilities,” Union told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday night while standing on the red carpet ahead of the world premiere at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre. “We’ve got co-parenting. We...

‘Percy Jackson’ Author Warned Producers About Terrible Script in Scathing Emails
20th Century Fox released “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” in theaters February 2010 with hopes of starting a new “Harry Potter”-sized film franchise. The family epic was even directed by Christopher Columbus, who launched the “Potter” franchise with “Sorcerer’s Stone” and “The Chamber of Secrets.” Unfortunately for Fox, the “Percy Jackson” franchise only lasted two films, neither of which made it to the $250 million mark worldwide.

“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” was based on the teen novel “The Lightning Thief,” written by Rick Riordin. The author recently posted on his official website a lengthy blog post in which he detailed the struggles he faced in pleading with the film’s producers to make the first movie as faithful to his book as possible. Riordin said that his contract for the film left him with little creative control or final say about the movie adaptation,...

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Patton Oswalt Returns To Get Tortured This Week In New Clip
Last week I did a review on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode "Wake Up" and one of our vigilant readers (Randomironicname) reflected on the status of Patton Oswalt's characters, Agents Sam, Billy, and the deceased Eric Koenig, and wondered if they were actually LMDs (Life Model Decoys) or simply just siblings. Agents of Shield, Ep. 2.16, “Afterlife”: The Dead Live Again
Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 16: “Afterlife”

Written by Craig Titley

Directed by Kevin Hooks

Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC

After Bobbi and Gonzalez’s big hero moment and Skye’s escape in “One Door Closes”, “Afterlife” is set up to be a bit of a let-down, or at least a slowdown by comparison. There are plenty of good hero moments, like the return of Deathlok, and Fitz-Simmons pulling the wool over Bobbi’s eyes. Even with these moments, the episode’s focus on Skye slows everything down to introduce Afterlife and fit in lots of exposition from Lincoln, played by guest star Luke Mitchell (The Tomorrow People).

It is difficult to gauge Mitchell’s performance as Lincoln based only on “Afterlife”, because as Skye’s guide in this world, most of his dialogue is exposition. The large majority of his scenes with Skye are just Skye walking...

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 2×07: The Writing on the Wall’ Review
Written by Craig Titley | Directed by Vincent Misiano

Plot:

When a Woman is found dead with the alien writing carved into her body, Coulson goes back into the Memory Machine to find his lost memories of Tahiti and figure out who it’s other patients were. Meanwhile May leads Trip, Bobbi and Hunter as they close in on Ward.

Verdict:

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. really has come leaps and bounds in the last seven episodes compared to what they achieved in twenty two episodes during it’s previous season (in which the last several were improvements on what came before them), with ‘The Writing on the Wall’ showing just how confident and exciting this series has become in such a short span of time.

This was a tense and dramatic experience as Coulson goes for all or nothing in his pursuit of the meaning of the alien writing, ordering Skye to...

Scooby Doo Heading Back To The Big Screen In Animated Reboot
Scooby Doo has been an iconic brand for 45 years. Since first appearing in 1969, the children’s show has undergone a variety of over-hauls and re-imaginings, with different versions incorporating ‘new’ characters and updated settings. The popularity of the most recent iteration – Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, which aired on Cartoon Network from 2010-2013 – has evidently set dollar signs flashing in the eyes of Warner Bros. studio executives once again, and a cinematic re-boot is now being planned.

Originally created for Hanna-Barbera Productions by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the premise of Scooby-Doo sees four teenagers – Daphne Blake, Fred Jones, Velma Dinkley and Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, along with the titular talking Great Dane – solve mysteries that initially appear to involve supernatural creatures and events. Essentially serving to de-bunk conspiracies, the team’s finely honed powers of deduction and trap-setting always lead them to the right conclusion.

In 2002, a live-action feature film was released.

Sam Raimi at an event for Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Someone is going to make a new version of "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea." Bold prediction, I know, but at this point, it's inevitable.  Too many different writers have taken a crack at it lately, and in May of 2010, I wrote a piece about no fewer than three different versions that were in development at the same time.  There was the Sam Raimi version that Craig Titley wrote, there was the Ridley Scott version that Travis Beachum was writing for 20th Century Fox, and there was also a Disney version that was originally being developed for McG until David Fincher...

Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson 2 Underway
Rick Riordan
It all went a bit quiet for Percy Jackson following the release of The Lightning Thief last year. The adaptation of the first in Rick Riordan's young adult series didn't quite break even during its Us run, but its performance overseas has apparently now persuaded Fox to get moving on a sequel after all. Sticking faithfully to the chronology of the books, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters is now being actively developed, with Logan Lerman set to return as the titular dyslexic demigod. There's no director attached yet, with Chris Columbus, who helmed the first film, acting only as producer this time, along with Twilight's Karen Rosenfelt. Different writers too, with The Lightning Thief's Craig Titley (Scooby Doo, Cheaper By the Dozen) handing over the reins to Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The pair previously wrote the kid-friendly Agent Cody Banks, but also brought us...

Will Smith at an event for Seven Pounds (2008)
Fall 2011-12 development: Will remakes of 'True Lies' or 'The Munsters' become great hits? Are you ready for a new take on Sherlock Holmes?
Will Smith at an event for Seven Pounds (2008)
Updated, 1/7: Each year, the five broadcast networks develop hundreds of scripted dramas and comedies in hopes they’ll become the next NCIS and Desperate Housewives, or the latest Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. And like every year, a great deal of them are not worth mentioning here — mostly because they involve the bland types of cops, lawyers, and doctors who you’ve already seen fighting crime or sneaking a kiss on the way to the ER.

But fascinating projects continue to pass the first smell test at the broadcast networks. The key is whether the suits take...

Blu-Ray Review: Silly ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief’
Chicago – The most notable thing about “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” now available on Blu-ray and DVD, is that it probably still holds position as the most horribly-titled film of the year. As for the actual movie, it follows in the footsteps of years of films trying to become the next “Harry Potter” franchise and, comparably, makes out much better than disasters like “Eragon” or “The Seeker: The Dark is Rising,” but that’s faint praise indeed.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

There are elements of this cluttered family fantasy that work, especially with the polish of HD, but, once again, the super-dull director Chris Columbus has taken a fantasy book and done as little as possible to make it effective as a feature film. The Columbus plan seems to be to cast the right people and merely push the story forward as predictably as possible to please his demo. Young...

Blu-ray review: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
Hollywood is obviously desperate to find the next Harry Potter franchise with the supernatural power to generate hundreds of millions of dollars and cast a spell on audiences worldwide.

Among the contenders is Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, released on Blu-ray and DVD today by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

It stars Logan Lerman - one of the candidates for the next Spider-Man, before Andrew Garfield landed the role - as high-school student Percy Jackson, who discovers he's the son of the Greek deity Poseidon (Kevin McKidd, see picture below). Accused of stealing Zeus's lightning bolt, he embarks on a quest to find the real thief, return the bolt and avert a war of the gods.

The film, released in UK cinemas in February, is based on the first in Rick Riordan's fantasy book series and has been brought to the big screen by Chris Columbus, who directed...

Wait...60,000 'Leagues Under the Sea'?
Why this, why now? Even though Disney is remaking its 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with reports bleeding out this weekend that David Fincher will direct, it's not the studio's property. Because it was written and published before the 1920s, it's fair game according to copyright law, and anyone who wants to make 20,000 Leagues (or Shakespeare or The Wizard of Oz or even most of Sherlock Holmes' catalog) is free to do it. It's public domain.

But why are the rival productions of the same story right now? It happened with Sherlock, it's happening with Three Musketeers, but I'm still not convinced the Sacha Baron Cohen-Will Ferrell comedy collaboration will ever happen, and since Saturday - Saturday, mind you - two other covers of 20,000 Leagues have bubbled to the surface, and they're not small potatoes, either.

Dark Horizons has culled information from a couple sources, and it appears...

Two Further "20,000 Leagues" Films Planned
It all seemed so simple a year ago, hell even a week ago. Now, everyone's scratching their heads as no less than three film adaptations of Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" are in the works and all have some big name talent attached.

Last year there were two rival projects in development based on the book. 'Film #1' was a 'Captain Nemo prequel' setup at Disney Pictures with McG slated to direct and Justin Haythe ("Revolutionary Road") penning the script.

Meanwhile according to HitFix, 'Film #2' was an adaptation penned by Craig Titley and has Sam Raimi attached as producer. In development for years and generally well regarded for its faithfulness to Verne's work, David Fincher was circling this version.

Then 'Film #1' got officially cancelled back in February, a victim of Disney's regime change, leaving only 'Film #2' standing up until this weekend when it was announced...

Around 20,000 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Scripts In Hollywood Right Now

Burns to write, a new take on the classic Jules Verne story. At the same time, Fox is prepping its own version of the submarine tale with an equally pedigreed filmmaking team. Disney Diving '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' with David Fincher
Now this might just be a bit of shepherding no one saw coming: David Fincher at the helm of Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake. McG (Terminator Salvation) may have departed the early iteration of the film, but the studio has not, in fact, canceled the project, as many had perhaps prematurely concluded.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog, the studio is in negotiations with Fincher and writer Scott Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) to develop a new take on the classic Jules Verne tale.

Apparently the project came together after Fincher approached Disney this winter, wanting to work on a big blockbuster movie, somewhat of a departure from the dark, R-rated dramas such as Fight Club and Zodiac for which he's become known in recent years.

Disney had been fast-tracking the $150M Leagues project, which the studio saw as an origin story for Captain Nemo. However, the project...

David Fincher leaves '20,00 Leagues' to direct... '20,000 Leagues'?
It's moments like these when I lose a little faith that anyone in Hollywood operates with even the slightest code of honor. When McG first started making noises about a "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" remake, it already struck me as a bit of dirty pool.  Craig Titley had a new version in development already with producer Sam Raimi, and their script had already been in development for a while, and well-liked around town.  I wasn't worried, though, because I knew that the Raimi film had a director circling the project, and I had every confidence that if it came down to a...

Title: "The Zillo Beast"

Writer / Director: Craig Titley / Giancarlo Volpi

Tagline: "Choose what is right, not what is easy."

Story: Republic and Separatist forces are locked in battle on the contested planet of Malastare. Anakin Skywalker and Mace Windu struggle against overwhelming odds, a treaty with the local Dug population hinging on their success. In the face of overwhelming opposition, Chancellor Palpatine authorizes the use of a super-weapon designed to cripple the droid forces while leaving organics intact. The weapon works, but it awakens a something ancient, a massive creature with great destructive capabilities that was long thought to be extinct by the Dug population responsible for wiping them out in the distant past.

That's No Moon: "The Zillo Beast" shows us a chancellor willing to stop the enemy at any cost -- even employing a super-weapon to do so -- while the Jedi stand by and allow it to happen.
