Adolescence star’s hit Hulu series is coming back for season 2
Image
It’s official, y’all: Stephen Graham’s hit Hulu series A Thousand Blows has been renewed for a second season, and according to the announcement, we can expect a season 2 debut sooner than we expect.

The gritty crime series is a gem of a period piece that sucked audiences right into its narrative of ambition, violence, organized crime, and desire. Created by Steven Knight, of Peaky Blinders fame, A Thousand Blows is a bloody boxing drama set in mid-1800s London that is completely flawless and purely entertaining. While it may have started as a miniseries, it was renewed before the first season even aired, and season 2 was shot back-to-back with season 1.

Inspired by the true-life stories of a group of characters battling for survival in the brutal underground of Victorian London’s East End, the series follows Jamaican immigrants Hezekiah Moscow (Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall) as...

‘A Thousand Blows’ Costumes Reveal How Far the Characters Are Willing to Go
Image
There’s a moment halfway through Season 1 of Steven Knight’s East End caper “A Thousand Blows” where criminal mastermind Mary Carr (Erin Doherty) takes rising boxer Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) for a posh night out; she does this ostensibly to introduce him to a promoter (Ziggy Heath) who can get Hez into more society-friendly exhibitions — colorful belts and boxing gloves are just now replacing bare-knuckle brawls at the start of this Hulu series — in exchange for his help in pulling off a heist. Also to flirt a bit.

What convinces the Jamaican transplant, though, is seeing a performer (Jessica Reeve) do a trapeze act and cast the whole room under her spell. Dressed all in silver like a cross between a heron and a Greek goddess, she has power over everyone else at that moment, and her skin color isn’t something the English are looking down on but looking up at.

The New Hulu Series Every Peaky Blinders Fan Needs To Watch
Image
If you were ever wondering what a blank check earned off the success of a show as popular as "Peaky Blinders" can buy you, the answer is a new streaming series as thrilling and well-crafted as "A Thousand Blows." Creator Steven Knight, the prodigious screenwriter behind movies such as "Locke," "Spencer," and the recent biopic "Maria," could've gone in any number of directions after crafting the Cillian Murphy-starring story about a gang of criminals making their way up from the slums of Birmingham to the very seat of power in early 1900s England. The fact that he chose to stay in roughly the same lane, this time set in 1880s London and following a gang of female thieves crossing paths with a pair of aspiring boxers from Jamaica, is precisely what makes this next effort so intriguing to watch. Write what you know, the old adage goes, and Knight...

A Thousand Blows spoiler-free review: A bare-knuckle knockout
Image
Hulu snuck up on us last week and, without warning, dropped a gem of a gritty period drama that sucked us right into its story of ambition, violence, and desire. Created by Steven Knight, of Peaky Blinders notoriety, A Thousand Blows is a gritty, bloody boxing drama set in mid-1800’s London. But that’s not all. The boxing is just a distraction—albeit a delicious one—from what’s really going on here: a group of outsiders (lower class) first demanding more than society is willing to give them, then downright taking it when they're denied. This is one irresistible, binge-worthy series you should absolutely watch.

Inspired by the true-life stories of a group of characters battling for survival in the brutal East End of London in the 1880s, A Thousand Blows casts a spotlight on a very different gang than those Knight introduced us to in Peaky Blinders.

‘A Thousand Blows’ Cast and Character Guide
Image
When it comes to British historical dramas, very few can be said to have matched the popularity attained by Peaky Blinders, so it’s understandable why fans were excited for series creator Steven Knight’s latest venture, A Thousand Blows. Set in the underworld of late 19th century London, the six-episode series focuses on the real-life all-female thieves gang, The Forty Elephants, and highlights the transition period of boxing. A Thousand Blows is engaging enough to keep its viewers hooked throughout, and aside from a solid script and the authentic recreation of historical settings, a colorful ensemble of characters proved to be the major reason behind that. With a second season already greenlit, there is a possibility of the series gaining a cult following in the near future, and the continuation of a proper arc of the players involved will be something to look forward to.

How "Disney Money" Influenced 'Peaky Blinders' Creator's New Series
Image
In the new series from creator Steven Knight, A Thousand Blows, viewers are taken from the Birmingham-set Peaky Blinders to the East End of London in the 1880s to examine the world of bare-knuckle boxing. The grittiness and drama are still there, as is the division between the upper and lower class, but with that being said, A Thousand Blows has something Peaky never did: Disney money. It's that extra infusion of cash that Knight says allowed him to create something even bigger, which he's hoping will translate to the small screen.

Speaking with Radio Times, Knight discussed the differences between dealing with a BBC-sized budget, and the one provided to him by Disney for A Thousand Blows. His new series stars Stephen Graham, Malachi Kirby, and Mary Carr, and is set to premiere on Feb. 21 on Disney+ overseas, and on Hulu here in the United States. "It's a nice feeling,...

‘A Thousand Blows’ Review: Steven Knight’s Hulu Boxing Drama Blends Genres to Entertaining if Conventional Effect
Image
Several great stories about the underbelly of Victorian London get smushed together to yield something less great but often extremely entertaining in Steven Knight’s new Hulu drama, A Thousand Blows.

Knight comes off less like a master storyteller here than a highly enthusiastic autodidact learning new things and then flailing a bit in making connections. That just means that, at its worst, A Thousand Blows — which caps these first six episodes with a “To Be Continued” title card and clips from additional upcoming episodes — will send interested observers online in search of the true stories about all-female criminal gangs, nascent gloved boxing and 19th-century concert hall performers.

So you’ve got well-acted, well-produced, genre-bending period television and an inspiration to do further research? You could do far worse, and the wildly prolific Knight — he of Peaky Blinders, The Veil and All the Light We Cannot See — has done both better and worse.

'A Thousand Blows' Hulu Series From 'Peaky Blinders' Creator Lands Knockout Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Peaky Blinders is set to make its long awaited return to the small screen by way of a Netflix movie soon, but before we get there, the new series from creator Steven Knight is garnering rave reviews ahead of its release on Hulu this week. Titled A Thousand Blows, the period boxing drama's Rotten Tomatoes score was just unveiled to be a solid 89% at the time of this writing, with some even calling it better than the Cillian Murphy-led crime series.

"A Thousand Blows could even end up being placed on a higher pedestal than Peaky Blinders," said Sabrina Barr from Metro UK, adding: "A bold claim, I know, but one I feel confident making considering how absolutely phenomenal it is from start to finish." Martin Carr from Cbr echoed those sentiments, while at the same time praising star Stephen Graham:

"Everything audiences have come to expect from...

A Thousand Blows
Image
Streaming on: Disney+

Episodes watched: 6 out of 6

Steven Knight certainly knows his way around a captivating historical drama. Hot on the heels of Sas: Rogue Heroes and almost three years since Peaky Blinders ended on the small screen, the Brummie writer is back with another excellent British series, once again based on fascinating real-life characters and settings. But while the big draw is undoubtedly Boiling Point and This Is England icon Stephen Graham’s transformation into a bulky bare-knuckle boxer, Knight also lays the foundations for an engaging larger ensemble.

Elements that are synonymous with Knight’s previous shows are here in abundance. There are plenty of gripping developments amongst the numerous schemes and deadly rivalries, along with a Peaky Blinders-esque family pub. Strong social and political commentary is also woven throughout, with a marked divide between the East End’s struggling working class and the aristocracy of the West End.

‘A Thousand Blows’ Review: A Period Boxing Drama That Swings Hard and Misses
Image
Steven Knight’s A Thousand Blows often calls to mind HBO’s Warrior. They both take place in an inner-city slum at the end of the 19th century, though here its Victorian London rather than San Francisco. And both follow a newly arrived immigrant, in this case Jamaican boxer Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby), as he contends with discrimination, inequality, and criminality in his new home, often resulting in hand-to-hand combat. But while they may share a similar style, a combination of lackluster fight scenes and thin characterization ensures that A Thousand Blows never quite makes it into Warrior’s weight class.

Upon arriving in London, Hezekiah quickly finds himself drawn into the world of underground boxing, a sinister realm presided over by brothers Treacle Goodson (James Nelson Joyce) and Sugar (Stephen Graham). Before he knows it, he’s embroiled in a bitter blood feud with Sugar and recruited by criminal queenpin...

Erin Doherty Battles Stephen Graham Outside the Ring in ‘A Thousand Blows’ Trailer
Image
The latest trailer for Hulu’s A Thousand Blows boxing drama has The Crown star Erin Doherty as Mary Carr trading barbs outside the ring with feared bare knuckle pugilist Sugar Goodson, played by Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham, to grow her criminal empire.

“Watch me kill him,” a menacing Goodson, the self-declared emperor of London’s East End boxing world, tells Carr, who introduces herself as Queen of an all-female criminal gang known as the Forty Elephants. “Can’t happen,” she defiantly replies, as Carr looks to exploit the talents of Kirby, a Jamaican boxer played by Hezekiah Moscow, who challenges Goodson for survival, and dominance, in the illegal boxing ring.

The result is three lives colliding for control of the criminal underbelly of Victorian London’s East End. A Thousand Blows, based on real-life figures and stories, is produced by The Story Collective in a co-production with Matriarch Productions...

November 14 Is a Disappointing Day for Bruce Lee Fans
Image
Time is running out for Bruce Lee fans on Netflix to stream the acclaimed series Warrior. The series is set to leave the streaming platform this month.

Per Netflix, Warrior will depart Netflix on Nov. 14. The bad news goes beyond having the title removed from the platform, as it's also further confirmation that Netflix will not be saving the series after all. When Warrior was added to Netflix this past February, there were hopes in the fan base that the show would pull in enough viewership to have the streamer order a fourth season. Unfortunately, even with a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show didn't click well enough with subscribers for Netflix to pursue a continuation, coinciding with star Joe Taslim's recent comments that the show was officially finished.

The show is led by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

The trailer showcases the first look at a crime drama, but there are some elements that the show fails to reveal in earnest. Check it out below:

Rather than focusing on the criminal underground, the trailer showcases the reality of life as a boxer in a heavy period piece. It does not reveal the Forty Elephants, though it does feature women hinting at the presence of a dangerous criminal underground.

Still, everything goes wrong in a very entertaining way and many iconic characters from the Karate Kid movies appear in the series. Image
Into the Badlands is “a high-octane sci-fi martial arts series” created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. They both journey through a dangerous territory known as the Badlands to survive. Into the Badlands stars Daniel Wu in the lead role, with Orla Brady, Sarah Bolger, Aramis Knight, Emily Beecham, Oliver Stark, Madeleine Mantock, Ally Ioannides, Marton Csokas, and Nick Frost starring in supporting roles. Warrior Canceled at Max, but Netflix Could Save the Day
Dianne Doan and Andrew Koji in Warrior (2019)
Well, this one's a true shocker.

Max has made the shocking decision to cancel Warrior.

The decision comes months after Warrior Season 3 wrapped on the streaming service.

Max rarely releases viewership statistics like many other streaming services, so it's difficult to assess how well the show performed.

The only good news to come from the cancellation is that Netflix has picked up the rights to past episodes of the series.

Deadline first reported the news, revealing that the show is set to hit Netflix in February 2024.

If the show proves to be a success with the service's subscribers, it could lead to additional seasons being produced.

Netflix has picked up many canceled shows in the past, including Cobra Kai, Longmire, and Manifest, so the company could be seen as a decent destination to get fresh episodes.

If the series does secure a reprieve at Netflix, it would mark its third U.

Warrior | Martial arts drama cancelled
Dianne Doan and Andrew Koji in Warrior (2019)
Martial arts drama Warrior has been cancelled by Sky – but there’s an outside chance that Netflix may make more episodes.

Before he became an international kung fu superstar thanks to films like Way Of The Dragon, in which he famously went hand to hand with Chuck Norris in Rome’s Colosseum, and Enter The Dragon (which features an equally iconic climactic battle which takes place in a hall of mirrors), Bruce Lee was an integral part of what made seminal 1960s show The Green Hornet a huge success.

Although his film career soon took off, had things turned out differently Lee would have continued to make an impact on the small screen. He’s generally accepted as being involved in creating the concept for Kung Fu, the drama that eventually starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, the pacifist who ended up in several fights every week.

‘Warrior’ Canceled (Again) at Max
Image
The revival of Warrior at Max turned out to be short-lived: The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has canceled the show after its first season as a Max original and third overall.

That said, the series — based on writings by Bruce Lee and set in 19th century San Francisco — will potentially get in front of more viewers beginning in February 2024 as all three seasons will stream on Netflix. Warrior will continue to be available on Max as well, similar to other non-exclusive streaming licensing deals Wbd has made with Netflix for HBO shows like Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers and Ballers.

Warrior began life as a Cinemax original series, premiering in 2019 to strong reviews. It was renewed for a second season that aired in fall 2020 — but by that time, Cinemax had wound down its originals business. The streamer then known as HBO Max revived it for a third season in...

‘Warrior’ Canceled by Max After Three Seasons; Netflix Acquires Repeats
Image
Max’s “Warrior,” a breakthrough series boasting one of the few Asian ensembles on television, has been canceled after three seasons. The series’ repeats will live on, however, via a off-net deal with Netflix, which has acquired the series’ run in a non-exclusive deal and could now potentially expose it to a new audience. (The show will also continue to be available on Max.)

“Warrior” returned for its third season in June after a two-year hiatus. The show originally ran on linear cabler Cinemax (starting in 2019), and was revived after a fan base campaign. Andrew Koji, Olivia Cheng, Jason Tobin, Dianne Doan, Kieran Bew, Dean Jagger, Tom Weston-Jones, Hoon Lee, Perry Yung, Langley Kirkwood, Miranda Raison, Chen Tang, Chelsea Muirhead, Mark Dacascos and Joe Taslim star.

Shannon Lee is among the executive producers on “Warrior,” which was based on a concept by her father, Bruce Lee. Per the logline, “‘Warrior...

‘Warrior’ Canceled At Max As Netflix Picks Up Non-Exclusive Rights To 3 Existing Seasons
Image
Warrior won’t be returning for a fourth season on Max.

However, the existing three seasons of the martial arts crime drama are set to find additional audiences as Netflix has picked up the series’ library in a co-exclusive deal with Max in Warner Bros. Discovery streamer’s markets.

Warrior is expected to debut on Netflix in February 2024. If it does well, Netflix could presumably order a new season of the drama based on an original concept and treatment by Bruce Lee, sources tell Deadline exclusively.

This latest move sets Warrior in its third home in as many years. The series premiered in 2019 on Cinemax where it ran for two seasons before it was announced in early 2020 that the network was moving out of the Originals business. Wbd sibling Max picked up the show for a third season in Spring of 2021 which premiered this summer with the season concluding on...
