Since the early 2000s, the Syfy channel has made a name for itself within the monster-movie sub-genre of horror. The network has produced countless creature features that are memorable, not for their high quality, but for their inexplicably entertaining low-budget films that are so bad they morph into hilarious romps audiences can't get enough of. Despite greenlighting famously cheesy franchises like Sharknado and mediocre must-see flicks like Frankenfish, one of Syfy's original films ditches the corniness for creating a worthwhile watch.
Written and directed by Ryan Schifrin, Abominable first premiered in theaters on April 10, 2006, and was released on DVD in October of that year. The U.K. premiere of Damien Leone’s holiday slasher “Terrifier 3” was something straight out of a horror movie.
Eleven audience members walked out of the theater, nine during the opening scene, and one on-looker lost their lunch watching the latest escapades of series mascot Art the Clown, played by David Howard Thornton. While a screening like this would spell disaster for some, producer Phil Falcone celebrated the extreme reactions as testamate to the hard work of Leone and special effects lead Christien Tinsley.
“It’s a slasher gore film with practical effects,” Falcone said. “So if you’re getting people to vomit and leave the theater, and they went there for horror, that’s a pretty good job, I’d say.”
Leone’s latest installment sees the bloodthirsty harlequin spreading Christmas cheer and fear to “Terrifier” scream queen Siena Shaw (Lauren Lavera) and the rest of the Miles County residents.

If they gave out an Academy Award for best performance by a silent harlequin in a white clown suit who can mime a giggle fit while slicing people’s faces off (don’t try this at home — the slicing or the silent laughing), the award would be a lock for Art the Clown, the mascot of beyond-anything-you’ve-ever-seen slasher mayhem who’s the depraved killer/ringleader of “Terrifier 3.”
Art the Clown is to Freddy and Jason and Michael Myers what the Sex Pistols were to the Who and the Stones: their punk end point, their scandalous culmination. In the good old days, slasher movies were about masked hulks chopping people’s limbs off or skewering them with butcher knives. (How quaint.) “Saw” and its sequels upped the ante, with the characters subjected to intricate machine-tooled torture that involved every conceivable form of dismemberment (with the added joke of: each victim deserved it!

Spoiler Alert: This story contains minor spoilers for “Terrifier 3,” opening in theaters Friday.
Writer-director Damien Leone, the mastermind of the “Terrifier” series, is such an upbeat guy that, in another life, it’s easy to imagine him as a life coach, a trainer, a teacher. Conversation with him is peppered with lessons and inspiration that came to him through shooting his latest film, “Terrifier 3”:
“You never know where inspiration is going to hit you.”
“You have to go and make the quickest, best decisions you can.”
“I’ll pull him aside and say, ‘I’m literally feeling magic here. This is wonderful.’ And that doesn’t happen often.”
The other shoe drops when realizing that Leone’s positivity is in service of one of the goriest horror movies ever made. The unrated “Terrifier 3” unleashes the unhinged Art the Clown on Christmas, where he once again stalks...

Writer/director Damien Leone had a budget of around $55,000 to work with on his breakout horror film Terrifier, and a budget of “a little over” $250,000 for Terrifier 2, which was a massive hit when it was released last year, earning $15.1 million at the box office. Since the second film did so well, Terrifier 3 – which is set to receive a theatrical release on October 11th – has a substantially higher budget. A “couple million” is going into this one, and some of that money has gone toward a Hollywood FX team that Leone brought in to help him create the nauseating effects. Leone recently took to social media to heap some praise on that FX team, headed up by Christien Tinsley, for the insanely horrific, stomach-turning, mind-blowing work they did on the film.
Leone wrote, “That’s a wrap on our incredible makeup fx team @tinsleymua It was scary relinquishing the...

The makeup effects work on this Halloween season’s Terrifier 3 is complete, director Damien Leone has announced in a social media post this week that’s full of praise for the contributions from Christien Tinsley and his team at Tinsley Studio. The award-winning makeup effects studio is handling all the insane gore in the upcoming slasher sequel, and Leone promises that the bar for Terrifier violence is going to be raised even higher come October 11, 2024.
How is that even possible, you ask?! Leone writes on Instagram, “That’s a wrap on our incredible makeup FX team (@tinsleymua). It was scary relinquishing the makeup FX on Terrifier 3 to another team since me and @pjfalcone did mainly all of the FX work on part 1 & 2. Now that Renfield is available on Blu-ray and DVD, I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves for not sinking their teeth into the horror-comedy on the big screen. The home video release boasts an hour of making-of featurettes and deleted/extended scenes, plus an audio commentary with eight crew members.
The track features producer Samantha Nisenboim, screenwriter Ryan Ridley, makeup effects supervisor Christien Tinsley, visual effects supervisor James E. Price, assistant editor Noah Cody, supervising sound editor/sound designer John Marquis, supervising sound editor Nancy Nugent, and supervising digital colorist David Cole.
Here are eight things I learned from the Renfield commentary…
1. Using footage from the original Dracula was Adam McKay’s idea.
Renfield opens with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula and Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield inserted into footage from Tod Browning’s 1931 classic adaptation of Dracula, a concept that came from McKay after boarding the project.

Nicolas Cage has named his five favourite films starring himself.
The actor appeared on Wednesday night’s episode (14 April) of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss his new horror-comedy, Renfield.
Midway through the programme, host Stephen Colbert asked: “What are Nic Cage’s top five Nic Cage films?”
Since making his film acting debut at age 17 in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1989), the actor, now 59, has gone on to star in several movies, including Leaving Las Vegas (1995) and National Treasure (2004).
Despite his long career, however, a few of Cage’s favourite movies are relatively recent releases.
“I’m going to start with Pig, that’s my favourite movie I’ve ever made,” he told Cobert.
“I love Mandy, the movie Panos Cosmatos directed. I love Bringing Out the Dead, which Martin Scorsese directed, and I loved Bad Lieutenant, which Werner Herzog directed.”

Renfield makeup artist Christien Tinsley has revealed the extreme lengths Nicolas Cage went to, to play Dracula.
In the new movie by director Chris McKay, Cage plays the vampire, while Nicholas Hoult portrays the title character, Dracula’s long-suffering assistant and henchman.
In an interview with Variety, Tinsley revealed they used 3D printing to craft Dracula’s famous fangs.
“This was the first film that I know of where we used 3D printing to do all the dentures,” Tinsley said. “We jumped in headfirst with 3D printing. We would scan Nic’s teeth and digitally sculpt them.”
Once the fake teeth were made, “We shaved Nic’s teeth down and the dentures were fitted so as not to impede on Nic’s speech and allow full freedom,” he said.
“Nic wanted to emote and annunciate properly, so it was important the veneers were thin.”

One of the highlights of this year’s Overlook Film Festival was attending the premiere of Renfield, with Nicolas Cage and director Chris McKay in attendance. Having seen the film, I can confidently say that horror fans are going to have a lot of fun with this one. This film has a great energy to it, with an equal mix of horror, comedy, and action that reminded me a lot of the tone of Ash vs. Evil Dead.
Not only did I have a chance to catch up with both Nicolas Cage and Chris McKay on the red carpet prior to the screening, but they took part in a post-screening Q&a. Highlights from both events are below and I’ve kept this spoiler free, only loosely referencing elements that have been shown in the trailer.

"Renfield" isn't going to be the first time Nicolas Cage has donned vampire fangs on camera. Unlike the literal plastic chompers he wore in the notorious "Vampire's Kiss," however, his prosthetics in Universal's upcoming horror comedy are the meticulous work of an Academy Award-nominated makeup artist. Christien Tinsley had to make sure that Cage's dentures looked appropriately threatening while also allowing the actor enough room to talk clearly. Thanks to modern technology, that goal was easier than it would have been in the past.
Vampire fangs may be a common and essential part of Halloween costumes, but their penchant for obstructing mouth movements makes them a bit of pain to apply on film. In fact, Bela Lugosi didn't even wear prosthetic teeth in the original "Dracula" film. The fangs wouldn't become an iconic part of vampire effects until Hammer's own take on "Dracula" in 1958 (a Turkish version of the...

The Universal horror-comedy Renfield reimagines classic horror characters in modern-day New Orleans, with Dracula’s beleaguered henchman realizing he’s been trapped in a toxic relationship for roughly a century.
Bloody Disgusting spent a day on set, getting acquainted with Nicholas Hoult’s new take on Renfield, the bug-eating righthand to Dracula, and learning more about the expansive supernatural world within director Chris McKay’s horror-comedy.
In part one of our set visit, we observed an early scene where Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield arrived late to a battle between Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and a group of vampire hunters. Later in the day, the lucky handful of journalists invited to set witnessed Cage in feral Dracula mode, ruthlessly dispatching his enemies with sharp teeth and claws.
The scene, which involved numerous shredded and maimed bodies, highlighted McKay’s affinity for horror and practical effects. When asked about his approach to reinterpreting classic characters like Dracula,...

“It’s always nice to be included,” declares “Emancipation” prosthetic makeup artist Christien Tinsley about his reaction to the film’s inclusion on the Oscar shortlist of 10 films vying for a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Tinsley is shortlisted alongside his colleagues makeup department head Ken Diaz, hair department head Andrea Bowman, and Judy Murdock and Pierce Austin, who respectively took charge of the makeup and hair for the film’s star Will Smith. For our recent webchat he adds, “I’m a huge fan of Ken Diaz. He’s been doing this for 40 plus years, and he’s been a colleague, a peer, a mentor. In a lot of ways, he was an inspiration when I was a child, uh, wanting to get into the business. So, to be working with Ken and then to be on the shortlist with him for the same film has been really spectacular for me.

The Coen Brothers have a way of creating unsettling characters in the most unsuspecting of ways. More specifically, their movies often feature memorable antagonists who pursue their targets with an almost comedic relentlessness, be it the lone biker of the apocalypse in "Raising Arizona" or Sheriff Cooley in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" However, in "No Country For Old Men," this pursuer archetype would transform into something much more severe and terrifying than anything the filmmakers had created in the past. To set a precedent for what would follow for the film, the Coens decided to kick-off "No Country For Old Men" with a graphic and violent opening scene.

“Vice,” the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, got a big boost at Saturday’s Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards. It won both of its bids for period/character makeup and special makeup effects. Its Oscar rival “Mary Queen of Scots” lost the race for period/character makeup but won for period/character hairstyling. The third Oscar nominee, Swedish film “Border,” was snubbed by the guild.
Last year, the eventual Oscar champ “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
It took till the ninth guild awards of the season for “A Star is Born” to finally win as it was recognized for its contemporary makeup. Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic had contended at the first eight guild awards unsuccessfully. “Asib: lost best contemporary hairstyling to “Crazy Rich Asians.

Five of the seven semi-finalists for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Stan & Ollie” and “Vice” — reaped bids with the guild, which announced nominations in five film categories on Thursday, Jan. 10 (halfway through the Oscar nominations voting period). The other two Academy Awards semi-finalists — the Swedish film “Border” and Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of “Suspiria” — was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild.
“Vice,” which we are predicting will win the Oscar, contends in period/character makeup as well as special makeup effects while its closest Academy Awards rival, “Black Panther” is up for just special makeup effects. Our third-place Oscar contender “Mary Queen of Scots” vies for both period/character makeup and hairstyling

As expected, the Creative Arts Emmy competition Sunday turned out to be a sci-fi smackdown between Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and HBO’s “Westworld,” and each split the night with five awards apiece.
The Duffer Brothers’ ’80s homage to Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, “Stranger Things” won for outstanding editing, main title theme music, main title design, sound editing, and casting. The Jonathan Nolan/ Lisa Joy sci-fi/western, “Westworld,” earned outstanding special visual effects (the domain of “Game of Thrones” five years running), makeup (non-prosthetic), hairstyling, sound mixing, and creative achievement in interactive media.
However, if recent history proves a reliable harbinger, “Stranger Things” has the edge in the race for next Sunday’s Outstanding Series competition because of its editing victory. That’s because the last five outstanding editing winners have also taken home the big prize.

“Game of Thrones” has ruled the non-prosthetic makeup Emmy category for four out of its six seasons — winning Emmys the last two years in a row. But the race is wide open this season during its hiatus, with the nominees ranging from perennials “Vikings” (its fourth nomination) and “Penny Dreadful” (its first nomination) to newcomers “Westworld,” “Stranger Things,” and “This Is Us.”
While the Norse-driven “Vikings” (“All His Angels”) offered lots of tattoos, scars, and blood, and the supernatural “Penny Dreadful” (“Perpetual Night”) boasted a rogues gallery of scars, creepy flesh, and gore, the race will come down to sci-fi dual universes and time-hopping family drama.
“Westworld” (“The Original”)
Christien Tinsley and his team (Myriam Arougheti, Gerald Quist, Lydia Milars, Ed French) forged new territory in finding a balance between beauty, period, reality, and fantasy for characters in the western theme park and mechanistic programming center. In order to conceptualize...

HBO is now two episodes deep into Westworld, and we’ve not yet begun to scratch the layers of this world. As our Alan Sepinwall said, HBO has thrown viewers into the deep end. With little to no hand-holding, it’s up to the audience to suss out the cracks in the machine. So far, Westworld has shown us the theme park itself, the entry point for guests, the living quarters of the employees, and the production facilities for the hosts. Perhaps the most mysterious part is what exactly the hosts are. In Episode Two, “Chestnut,” two surgical engineers working on host Maeve (Thandie Newton) lament she’s contracted Mrsa from a guest. For those lucky enough to know what that is, Mrsa is a highly antibiotic-resistant strain of staph bacteria that literally eats abscesses into their host. Do not Google image search. Don’t do it. But how does...

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This season of "American Horror Story" took things to an entirely new level by introducing every horror facet it could and bringing it all together perfectly. We had Nazis, Pinheads, mutants, aliens, demons, ghosts... you name it, it was there.
Recently concept designer Jerad S. Marantz took to his blog to show off some eye candy from the show by makeup FX artist Christian Tinsley, and it's nothing short of badass!
“Coming up with the look and feel of these characters is a collaborative effort, and I love how the project pushes Design further every year. Asylum took a lot of work, much more than season one. There was so much to do, and it was a lot of fun,” said Marantz.
Check out the goods below.

Now that American Horror Story: Asylum has wrapped its season, the dark secrets can be revealed. In this case, those secrets come by way of creature concept art from designer Jerad S. Marantz. Marantz had this to say about Ahs on his personal website:
This is one of my absolute favorite projects to work on. I'm a big fan of the show and I love working on these designs for Christian Tinsley and Ryan Murphy. Coming up with the look and feel of these characters is a collaborative effort and I love how the project pushes Design further every year. Asylum took a lot of work, much more than season one. There was so much to do and it was a lot of fun. This show just had so much going on I can't even imagine what Murphy will come up with for next season.

Now that the latest season of American Horror Story has wrapped, we have a look at some of the concept art that was created for the asylum storyline. **Keep in mind that the artwork would be considered a spoiler for those that have not yet seen American Horror Story: Asylum.**
All of the artwork below was created by Jerad S. Marantz, a concept artist that specializes in character and creature designs, and has worked on Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Riddick, and a number of other projects. Jerad mentions that the artwork below was created based on ideas/feedback from Christian Tinsley and Ryan Murphy, and most of them are pretty close to what we saw in the actual show:

Now that American Horror Story: Asylum has come to an end, concept designer Jerad S. Marantz has shared several pieces of art for Bloody Face, the show's aliens, Pepper the Pinhead and Dr. Arden's experiments. This is the first time you actually get a good look at the alien design.
Marant cooked up these concepts for makeup FX artist Christian Tinsley whose credits include Nip/Tuck, Abominable and I Am Legend.
Marantz writes via his blog, "Coming up with the look and feel of these characters is a collaborative effort and I love how the project pushes Design further every year. Asylum took a lot of work, much more than season one. There was so much to do and it was a lot of fun."

Imagine being in the makeup business for 18 years, working on such films as "The Passion of the Christ," "How The Grinch Stole Christmas," and "No Country For Old Men" -- and then getting hired onto arguably the most makeup-friendly TV show of all time, "American Horror Story."
That's what happened to Oscar-winning makeup artist Christien Tinsley, who, along with his team, is having the time of his life. Every facet of "Ahs" is dependent on makeup, and as any fan can attest, it's true artistry in each episode.
HuffPost TV spoke with Tinsley over the phone and he gave us some pretty intense details about Pepper, the secret behind Bloody Face's mask and the difficulty in creating Dr. Arden's mutants.
Working on this show must be a makeup artist's dream.
It is, absolutely. I wish I could be more a part of it! There are some makeups that are so great,...
