‘The Last Night At Tremore Beach’ Cast And Character Guide
Image
The Last Night at Tremore Beach has dropped on Netflix, and the show has everything it takes to become the next sensation for the streaming service. It is directed by none other than Oriol Paulo, who gained quite a reputation thanks to the 2016 blockbuster The Invisible Guest, along with The Body, (2012) Mirage, (2017) God’s Crooked Lines, (2022) and the Netflix miniseries The Innocent (2021). The man’s work speaks volumes, and it can safely be said that The Last Night at Tremore Beach pretty much justifies the hype. The series focuses on Alex, a composer who moves to a coastal town after a fatal accident to get his mojo back. Obviously, it is much more than that. In this article, we are going to take a closer look at the cast and the characters they play in the show.

Spoilers Ahead

The Last Night at Tremore Beach Review: A Story Lost at Sea
Image
Oriol Paulo has made a name for himself producing complex thriller films that keep audiences guessing. His work is known for imaginative plots and ambiguities that stay with viewers long after the final scene. In The Last Night at Tremore Beach, Paulo aims to once again unsettle and intrigue through an unorthodox tale of premonitions and past trauma.

We meet the protagonist Alex, a renowned composer, as he’s endured a personally disturbing incident and retreated to the seaside town of Tremore. Here on the isolated coast, Alex hopes to find peace in his work. But strange things begin occurring in Tremore, exacerbated when a freak lightning strike hits Alex one night. He suddenly experiences unnervingly realistic visions that may foretell events.

With this set-up, the series grabs our attention through its atmospheric setting and Alex’s mystifying new “gift.” We’re left wondering if his visions are psychologically-driven or something more,...

It was first announced in late 2019 as a Buena Vista Original Productions title produced with Bossi’s Pampa Films (“Chinese Takeaway”). It follows on their highly successful collaboration on “Monzón,” which raised the bar on production standards in Latin America.

Music Make You Lose Control: Almodovar’s Return to High Camp Shenanigans

Fans of Pedro Almodovar’s early works, like Dark Habits and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown should be really, really excited for his latest, I’m So Excited, a bawdy, trifling, absurd breath of fresh air that sees the auteur return to zany high camp territory. However, while those early works had a playful subversive edge to them, this latest confection feels a little light on the transgressions, despite some memorably crass moments and minor politically minded jeering.

A technical failure to the landing gear (caused by two airport employees in cameos from Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz) puts Peninsula Flight 2549 en route to Mexico City in peril, forcing Captain Acero (Antonio de la Torre) and co-pilot Benito Moron (Hugo Silva) to fly in circles over Toledo. Economy class has been given muscle relaxers and thus are all passed out,...

I’m So Excited Review
Pedro Almodóvar, one of Spain’s most internationally acclaimed directors (he’s won two Academy Awards to date), returns to familiar territory with I’m So Excited, his first out-and-out comedy since Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown was released some twenty three years ago. Gone are the somewhat sombre explorations of dark, labyrinthine subjects found within his recent crop of dramas (The Skin I Live In, Broken Embraces), only to be replaced by all the necessary ingredients needed to make a frivolous, laugh-inducing and frothy farce.

When a technical failure caused by airport workers, played by Almodóvar regulars Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, forces Peninsula Flight 2549 to circle Toledo until a runway can be sourced and prepped for an emergency landing, the equally outlandish and excessive characters aboard – from the camp and sexually promiscuous flight crew to the novel business class passengers – turn to alcohol, smuggled-on drugs...

I’m So Excited Review: Almodóvar Delivers A Lazy Comic Misfire
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Those who have found themselves entranced by Pedro Almodóvar’s tendency towards the dark side in recent years – especially with his last film, the deliciously demented The Skin I Live In – will likely be disappointed by his latest effort, a low-key outing that somewhat recalls the director’s more playful early work, though lacks the wit to make its high-camp premise work.

It’s difficult to imagine that I’m So Excited (named after the Pointers Sisters hit song, which features in one admittedly uproarious, lip-synced scene) would do any business at all were it not festooned with the seal of approval that is Almodóvar’s name, because this mile-high comedy doesn’t so much feel like one of the director’s films as it does another writer-director trying to ape his style.

The premise is enticing enough – a flight bound for Mexico City appears to...

'I'm So Excited' review: Pedro Almodóvar does mile high comedy
Pedro Almodóvar
Director: Pedro Almodóvar; Screenwriter: Pedro Almodóvar; Starring: Javier Cámara, Pepa Charro, Lola Dueñas, Cecilia Roth, Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz; Running time: 90 mins; Certificate: 15

Pedro Almodóvar switches to something a little more frivolous after delving into the darkness with plastic surgery thriller The Skin I Live In. New comedy I'm So Excited is very much Carry On Across the Airways as he tracks the lives of passengers and crew on a flight from Spain to Mexico City.

It's as camp as Christmas and light as a feather, but there's fun to be had in this absurdist comedy in the clouds. Almodóvar regulars Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz make fleeting appearances as squabbling baggage handlers at the start of the film, but the baton is swiftly passed on to air stewards Joserra (Javier Cámara), Ulloa (Raúl Arévalo) and Fajas (Carlos Areces) for the mile-high shenanigans.

A landing gear hitch leaves the flight in a holding pattern,...

Latest Almodóvar Comedy Has the Director's Biggest Opening-Weekend b.o. in His Native Country
Almodóvar comedy boasts the director's best opening ever in his native country (in euros) I'm So Excited / Los amantes pasajeros , the Pedro Almodóvar airplane-set comedy, had the biggest Spanish debut weekend ever for an Almodóvar film -- in terms of box-office receipts (in euros), though apparently not in actual number of movie tickets sold. Distributed by Spanish branch of Warner Bros., the comedy raked in $2.5 million at 298 venues this past weekend (March 8 - 10), thus trailing only -- and by a very small margin -- the Disney-distributed, Sam Raimi-directed Oz the Great and Powerful, which earned $2.61 million at 649 sites, as per box-office numbers found on the web site Box Office Mojo. (Pictured above: I'm So Excited cast members.) Needless to say, the per-theater average for Almodovar's latest -- despite a number of negative reviews in the Spanish media -- was much higher than the one for the $200 million-budgeted Hollywood flick starring James Franco: $8,415 vs.

Full trailer for Almodovar's latest 'crazy' comedy
Pedro Almodóvar I’m So Excited trailer, with Miguel Ángel Silvestre Pedro Almodóvar’s upcoming movie, I’m So Excited / Los amantes pasajeros (literally, "passing lovers" and/or "passenger lovers") has a new and full trailer. Here’s Something To Brighten Your Day: Dancing Flight Attendants in Teaser Trailer for ‘I’m So Excited’
Hey, there, sweet reader. Today hasn’t been the sunshiniest of Fridays, so let’s take a break and watch something sure to elevate your mood. Pedro Almodovar‘s latest film, I’m So Excited (which was once referred to as The Standby Lovers, and has now clearly been renamed in honor of The Pointer Sisters’ song), has just sent out its first teaser trailer, and it is a delight. Drugs! Dancing! Lip-syncing! All on a jet hurdling through the sky! Get your tickets now. (Get it?) Back in June, we learned a bit about the film when Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz joined the cast, including its apparent plot: “a comedy…that’s about a plane full of people who reveal their most guarded secrets to one another when the aircraft starts to go down.” And that’s just about all we know at this point, though it’s certainly not essential for enjoying said first...

Sony Pictures Classics Picks Up Pedro Almodóvar's 'I'm So Excited' For Summer 2013 Release
Sony Pictures Classics and Pedro Almodóvar are cinematic peanut butter and jelly, a union that is never wrong and has been fruitful for many, many years. The film, previously known as "Standby Lovers" or "The Brief Lovers," features an ensemble cast of faces new and old, including Javier Cámara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Dueñas, Raul Arévalo, Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, Willy Toledo, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Blanca Suárez, José Luis Torrijo, José María Yazpik, and Laya Martí with special collaborations (ie. cameos) from Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega. Said to be a comedy in the vein of Almodóvar's early films, plot details are under wraps, but it's said to be a comedy...

Sony Pictures Classics Just Can’t Hide It; Almodovar’s “I’m So Excited” Makes it 8 Between Label & Helmer
In a no-brainer deal, Spc have grabbed all North American rights to Pedro Almodóvar’s next project which begins lensing next month. Curiously the pic known as “Los Amantes Pasajeros” with early/translated titles of “The Brief Lovers” and/or “Standby Lovers“, but now appears to now go by The Pointer Sister-esque, I’m So Excited.

Gist: With the almighty cast that includes: Javier Cámara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Dueñas, Raul Arévalo, Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, Willy Toledo, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Blanca Suárez, José Luis Torrijo, José María Yazpik, Laya Martí with special collaborations from Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega, this is about a group of people on the brink of impending disaster.

Worth Noting: Of all the players involved, Cecilia Roth is the one with the longest history with Almodovar – appearing in his earlier films including his debut, 1980′s Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón.

Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘The Standby Lovers’ Will Team Spanish Actors Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz For the First Time Ever
Anyone who saw last year’s surgical horror story, The Skin I Live In, knows that director Pedro Almodóvar can pull a first-rate performance out of Antonio Banderas, which makes sense, seeing as they’ve been working together for over 20 years. And anyone who has seen Almodóvar’s starring vehicles for Penélope Cruz, like Volver or Broken Embraces, can give similar compliments to his relationship with that actress. Almodóvar is a filmmaker who knows how to get the best out of the people he’s working with. But what he’s never been able to do is direct Banderas and Cruz together in the same movie. As a matter of fact, even though they’re maybe the two most famous Spanish actors of the last two decades, up until this point nobody has been able to get them both to appear in the same film. That’s all set to change come Almodóvar’s latest project, however...

Antonio Banderas Will Cameo In A Scene With Penelope Cruz In Pedro Almodovar's 'Standby Lovers'
When Antonio Banderas and Pedro Almodovar unveiled "The Skin I Live In" in 2011, it marked their first collaboration in over twenty years, in a film that was excitingly new territory for both director and actor. We wondered how long it would be before the duo paired up again, and thankfully, the wait will be shorter than two decades.

On the heels of news that Penelope Cruz would also be taking a role in Almodovar's next film "Standby Lovers," ABC and ScreenDaily clarify that it will only be a cameo role. And while that's a slight disappointment, the good news is that she will be joined by Banderas in the scene. Said to be a comedy in the vein of Almodovar's early films, plot details continue to get solidified as the production moves closer to its start date, with the story said to be an apocalyptic comedy set against a plane...

Sony scores Spanish hat trick
Guillermo Toledo in The Minions of Midas (2020)
MADRID -- Columbia Films Production Spain is teaming with Spanish production houses Morena Films and Estudios Picasso to co-produce an as-yet-untitled soccer-based comedy starring Guillermo Toledo and Javier Gutierrez.

The film, Sony's third local Spanish production after "Di Que Si" and "Melissa P.", will be directed by Alvaro Fernandez Armero, based on his screenplay co-written with Juan Cavestany. Sony Pictures Releasing International will release the film in Spain and handle worldwide distribution.

The €2.8 million ($3.6 million) film, which began shooting Oct. 30 in Madrid and Andalucia, will be produced by Morena's Pedro Uriol with Picasso's Belen Atienza and Columbia's senior vp of European productions Iona De Macedo overseeing production on behalf of their respective companies.

This is the fifth feature co-produced or co-financed by the European division of Columbia Tristar Motion Picture Group's local-language production arm.

The film tells the story of Jose Luis Perez, a referee in the extremely competitive Spanish professional soccer league whose reputation is in jeopardy as a result of a series of controversial decisions. Still in love with his ex-wife, he finds out she has a new lover and must now travel for the last and decisive match of the season with his best linesman and loyal friend, who has his own shameful secret.

The Other Side of the Bed

Sundance Film Series

An all-singing, all-dancing take on infidelity, Spain's "El Otro Lado de la Cama" (The Other Side of the Bed) is a big fluff ball of a sex farce that's so light and flimsy it's a wonder they were able to thread it through the projector.

That apparently suited audiences just fine back home, where the picture, from veteran comedy director Emilio Martinez-Lazaro, was one of the country's top-grossing 2002 releases and went on to receive half a dozen Goya Award nominations.

Screened at the just-wrapped Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, it's also one of a group of independent films being released in 10 American markets this fall as part of the inaugural Sundance Film Series.

But it's unlikely "The Other Side of the Bed" will have much of an impact on this side of the pond, considering, among other things, the lack of familiarity viewers will have with the contemporary Spanish pop hits covered by the game but decidedly not golden-throated cast members.

Madrid provides a vivid setting for the ensuing passion that surrounds a pair of couples who have trouble sticking with their original configurations.

To start with, Paula (Natalia Verbeke) has just dumped Pedro (Guillermo Toledo) for a Mystery Man who turns out to be his best buddy and tennis partner Javier (Ernesto Alterio). As Javier keeps the charade going for as long as he can, his in-the-dark girlfriend Sonia (Paz Vega) ultimately provides despondent Pedro with more than a shoulder on which to cry.

Figuring something's up when Sonia fails to come home one night, Javier is convinced she's having an affair -- with a lesbian friend from her theater company.

If all this sounds like it's stuck in some kind of sitcom-y "Love, Iberian Style" vortex, it's probably because David Serrano's cutesy, coincidence-riddled script does little to suggest otherwise.

The big novelty here is that in between all the coupling and recoupling, each of the attractive cast members finds time to express their inner emotions in song and dance -- and the fact that no one in the ensemble can pull off either particularly well actually makes it all rather endearing, at least in the early going.

But after a while, the innocuous tunes, with (translated) titles like "Honeymoon" and "Tell Me That You Love Me", and Pedro Berdayes' charmingly clunky but spirited choreography (imaginatively set in places like health club bathrooms and museums) begin to grow as labored as the script's tangle of deceiving appearances.

Ultimately, those likable actors, particularly Sonia's Paz Vega, who was recently seen in "Talk to Her" and "Sex and Lucia", go a considerable distance in making "The Other Side of the Bed" a comfy but quickly forgettable destination.
