Crime Procedural ‘Pain & Suffering’ In Works At Netflix From Don Todd & Kapital
Image
Exclusive: Netflix continues its push into close-ended procedurals with Pain & Suffering, an hourlong series in development from Don Todd, creator of the streamer’s 2023 limited series Florida Man.

Described as a new way into a fun episodic crime-solving show, Pain & Suffering centers on a curmudgeonly, misanthropic insurance adjuster whose job is coldly assigning monetary value to human lives, teams up with a homicide cop to look beyond the numbers and become the reluctant solver of overlooked murders.

Todd is writing the script and executive producing. Aaron Kaplan executive produces for Kapital Entertainment, which is the studio. Kevin Marco is the creative executive for Kapital. A rep for Netflix declined comment.

After building its streaming business on serialized, bingeable series, Netflix has been looking to supplement that with original broadcast-style close-ended procedurals, starting with the upcoming Pulse, its first medical procedural.

Kapital also has in the works at Netflix a spiritual...

Is 'Florida Man' Based on a True Story?
Image
Quite a lot of things can go wrong when a struggling ex-cop is forced to return to his home state to find a mobster's ex-girlfriend. And more things could go wrong if the home state would be "the realest goddamned place on Earth," as quoted by Donald Todd through his latest limited series on Netflix, Florida Man. Starring Édgar Ramírez as a perpetually doomed cop who cannot stay away from Florida even if he wanted to, Florida Man extends a popular meme from the 2010s to build a Florida as bizarre as one the headlines that flood internet meme pages want the audiences to believe in. It's no wonder that when a popular internet meme, which is oft inspired by real-life events, makes it to streaming, it would pose real questions about the authenticity of the events depicted.

‘Florida Man’ (2023). Series on Netflix: Entertainment as usual
Image
Florida Man is a Netflix series created and directed by Donald Todd and starring Édgar Ramírez and Abadía Lee, is a drama in the world of mobsters full of entanglements.

An “American-style” thriller that leaves us the best and the least good of the entertainment industry: the system knows how to create a great production without risking the slightest.

Without being salient, it has all the elements of an 80’s thriller, those that didn’t go down in history and didn’t pretend to, but that gave us so many good moments.

About the Series

A film that does not want to stand out and that, full of desires to achieve in the cinematographic aspect, is born without the taste needed to be outstanding, but as a perfect television product in which good professionals get, without too much effort, “just another day at the office”.

A Florida Man tastes like a “serial” series,...

‘Florida Man’ trailer brings Sunshine State noir comedy to Netflix
Image
On Monday, Netflix released the full trailer for the upcoming crime dramedy limited series “Florida Man,” and if you weren’t in a Sunshine State of mind before, you will be after this.

“Florida Man” stars Edgar Ramírez as Mike, an ex-cop with a debilitating gambling problem who owes a lot of money to a Philadelphia gangster named Moss Yankov. When Moss’ girlfriend Delly (Abbey Lee) – with whom Mike has his own history – absconds to Florida, Mike is sent to his home state to find her. Mike tried to put Florida behind him, but once he returns, he’s pulled back into Florida’s well-documented craziness when Delly tells him a way they can get $100 million. It’s a big score that involves some really shady characters and lots and lots of guns. “This is Florida,” Clark Gregg’s character says. “The goddamn state is shaped like a gun.” He...

‘Florida Man’ Series Preview: The Cast, The Plot, and First Look Trailer
Image
Florida Man series creator Donald Todd says his new Netflix show asks how “Florida Man” became a thing. “[People] laugh at the mug shots and the headlines,” said Todd, “but what’s the story behind the meme?”

Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, creator/showrunner and executive producer Todd talked about why he’s fascinated by Florida Man memes.

“As I grew up, I never stopped thinking about why Florida is Florida,” said Todd. “Florida is a thin layer of porous crust on top of a hundred feet of water, and it’s maybe a few feet above sea level… it might all sink. So when you feel that everything is temporary, you take what you can when you can get it. A ‘Florida man’ is someone who’s proudly independent and doesn’t live by your code, which means he doesn’t live by any code.”

The first trailer for the...

Netflix’s ‘Florida Man’ trailer shows the dark side of the Sunshine State [Watch]
Image
The term “Florida man” comes from a meme. The joke is that all the unbelievable news headlines that come out of the Sunshine State are all the work of one man, Florida Man, “the world’s worst superhero.” As any Floridian (or ex-Floridian) will tell you, Florida is a special place. Nowhere else in America has the specific combination of traits – warm weather, easily navigable ports, favorable tax laws – that creates the conditions for lunacy to flourish.

Netflix’s limited series “Florida Man,” for which the streaming service released a premiere date and teaser trailer on Friday, taps into the Florida Man phenomenon. It isn’t about the Florida Man, but it is about a Florida man fighting against his nature. He thought he had escaped Florida, but the swamp is hard to get out of. Florida has its own gravitational pull.

“Florida Man” follows a down-on-his-luck ex-cop (“The Assassination...

‘Florida Man’ Teaser: Edgar Ramírez Dives into the Sunshine State’s Seedy Underbelly
Image
Florida is a state that’s constantly the butt of the joke, but it’s also been the inspiration for plenty of great TV: “Miami Vice!” “On Becoming a God in Central Florida!” All the Jacksonville jokes in “The Good Place!” Now, Netflix is hopefully adding to that canon with “Florida Man,” a new thriller show set to premiere April 13. In addition to announcing the date, the streamer also released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming limited series.

Per Netflix’s logline, the thriller stars Edgar Ramírez as struggling ex-cop Mike Valentine, who’s forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philadelphia mobster’s runaway girlfriend. The seemingly simple task spirals into a larger journey “into buried family secrets, and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong.” Abbey Lee stars as the mobster girlfriend Delly West,...

Florida Man Trailer Shows Bizarre Series Of Crimes Only Fit For Florida
Image
Netflix's official teaser for Donald Todd's new limited series, Florida Man, sees Mike Valentine (Édgar Ramírez) returning to his hometown of Florida where he finds himself amid a bizarre series of crimes. The term "Florida Man" has become a popular meme in recent years due to Florida men frequently making the news for bizarre and absurd actions and crimes. Now, it seems the popular internet meme has sparked a television series to further delve into the absurdities that Florida seems to attract.

Netflix dropped the official teaser trailer for Florida Man on March 3.

The teaser offers a first look at Ramírez's detective Valentine and the chaotic chain of events that unfold when he returns to his home state of Florida. The teaser promises that Florida Man is full of sunshine, shady secrets, crimes, and chaos, much to the chagrin of Valentine, who would rather leave the state behind for good.

Florida Man Trailer: A Hard-Boiled Thriller In America's Wackiest State
Image
Florida man, Florida man, does whatever a Florida man can... Newsrooms around the world have a fondness for any headline that begins with "Florida Man," because it's almost guaranteed to be a ridiculous story. While some have argued that the sheer amount of insanity out of Florida has more to do with the state's lax laws regarding crime reporting, it's also just possible that Florida is a really weird place, like Narnia with retirees, assault rifles, and lots of sunblock.

A new limited series will follow one such "Florida man," an ex-cop named Mike Valentine (played by Edgar Ramírez), who is a born-and-raised Floridian reluctant to return to his home state. However, he's forced to go back to the sunshine state for a job trying to find a Philadelphia mobster's runaway girlfriend (Abbey Lee). Instead of a quick job with no problems, unfortunately, he gets sucked into all kinds of...

June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Richard Roundtree, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg & Malcolm McDowell Set For Josh Margolin Comedy ‘Thelma’
Image
Exclusive: 93-year-old Oscar nominee June Squibb (Nebraska) has found her first, long overdue leading role in Thelma, an upcoming “action” comedy written and directed by Josh Margolin, which has wrapped production. The actress is joined in the ensemble by Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus), Richard Roundtree (Shaft), Parker Posey (The Staircase), Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange).

Margolin’s first feature, based on a real-life experience involving his grandmother, is (half-jokingly) billed as Nebraska meets Mission: Impossible. It centers on 90-year-old grandmother Thelma Post (Squibb), who gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson and sets out on a uniquely treacherous quest to reclaim what was taken from her.

Zoë Worth, a longtime collaborator of Margolin’s, and producing partner Chris Kaye started developing Thelma after reading an early draft in their writer’s group, Rock & Roll Universe. The film will be their first produced together.

Edgar Ramírez at an event for The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards (2018)
Netflix has picked up the series “Florida Man” starring Edgar Ramírez, the streamer announced Monday.

Described as an hourlong series in the spirit of “Body Heat” and “Out of Sight,” “Florida Man” centers on a struggling ex-cop (Ramírez) who is forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend.

“What should be a quick gig becomes a spiraling journey into buried family secrets, and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong,” Netflix’s description of the series reads.

“Samantha Who?” creator Donald Todd, whose credits also include NBC’s “This Is Us,” ABC’s “Ugly Betty” and Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow,” is creator, showrunner and executive producer on the series. Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan of Aggregate (“Ozark”) also serve as executive producers on the series under their first-look deal with Netflix.

Netflix has given a formal eight-episode series order to Florida Man. Edgar Ramírez, star of the streamer’s popular movie Yes Day, will headline the hourlong series from veteran TV writer producer Donald Todd and Jason Bateman & Michael Costigan’s Aggregate Films.

In Florida Man, created by Todd, when a struggling ex-cop (Ramírez) is forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend, what should be a quick gig becomes a spiraling journey into buried family secrets and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong. The series is described as a wild odyssey into a sunny place for shady people in the spirit of Body Heat and Elmore Leonard’s Out of Sight.

Todd, who will serve as showrunner, executive produces with Aggregate’s Bateman and Costigan. The project stems from Aggregate’s first-look deal with Netflix.

Sleepy Hollow, Ep. 2.10, “Magnum Opus” gets back to basics pre-midseason finale
Sleepy Hollow, Season 2, Episode 10, “Magnum Opus”

Written by Donald Todd

Directed by Doug Aarniokoski

Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox

At a time when Sleepy Hollow is running the risk of losing its vital energy thanks to an excess of plots and characters, it’s important to remember the things everyone loved about the show in the first place. It captured the attention of viewers thanks to the ludicrous concept of a Headless Horseman wielding automatic weapons, and delivered that early and often. It moved past initial absurdity by capitalizing on the chemistry between its two leads and building a dynamic that everyone wanted to root for. And it managed to remain a consistently solid supernatural drama, deploying well-executed monsters and suspense.

“Magnum Opus” is an episode that provides all of those things in abundance, setting a promising stage for the show’s midseason finale next week. A large...

Sleepy Hollow, Ep. 2.03, “Root Of All Evil”: Heads or tails, Mr. Crane?
Sleepy Hollow, Season 2, Episode 3, “Root Of All Evil”

Written by Melissa Blake and Donald Todd

Directed by Jeffrey Hunt

Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox

One of the war’s most notorious figures—as Fat Tony’s henchmen would say, the same Benedict Arnold who plotted to surrender West Point to the hated British—he’s a persona that even someone with a surface knowledge of American history could identify. And given Sleepy Hollow’s keen interest in the ideas of loyalty and betrayal, he’s a prime candidate to fit into the show’s narrative and prompt questions about whose side someone is on.

By that logic,...
