A battle between two Marvel Cinematic Universe stars to be the best Frankenstein is now coming. Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic novel, which follows the titular scientist Victor Frankenstein who assembles a sentient being by piecing together various human body parts, has been adapted to the screen countless times over the years, starting with James Whale's 1931 pre-code film starring Boris Karloff.
Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Frankenstein film features a cast that includes MCU star Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight) as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the monster, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lauren Collins, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance, Ralph Ineson, Burn Gormna, and two-time Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz. Now, another MCU star is set to play Frankenstein.

Few figures in genre cinema are as cloaked in speculation as Juan F. Moctezuma II, a name that has long drifted through the shadows of Mexican horror history. His films from the 1970s are rumoured to have influenced Guillermo del Toro, Robert Rodriguez and Sam Raimi, yet the man himself has remained an enigma. This month, Where Is Juan Moctezuma? will premiere at FrightFest London 2025, screening on Sunday 24 August at 8:40 p.m. in Discovery Screen Two at the Odeon Luxe West End, and is set to reopen the debate about whether the elusive filmmaker ever truly existed.
According to decades-old accounts, Moctezuma’s career reached its peak with 1000 Paths of Death, his first Hollywood production under Roger Corman. The project was reportedly filmed in complete secrecy before vanishing along with its director. One theory claims the work was sabotaged by his nemesis, the legendary luchador El Escorpión, a feud that,...

Romanian auteur Radu Jude (Kontinental ’25, Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World) is world premiering his much-anticipated new feature, Dracula, at the Locarno Film Festival on Sunday, but he is already writing a movie about a popular character from another iconic horror novel – Frankenstein. Spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" to follow.
The main characters of "Star Trek" are explorers above all else, and sometimes, exploration is about investigating the past. That's exactly what happens in "Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 5, "Through the Lens of Time."
In an earlier season 3 episode, "Wedding Bell Blues," we met Christine Chapel's (Jess Bush) new boyfriend Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O'Sullivan). We know from "Star Trek: The Original Series" — specifically the episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" — that Chapel and Korby will get engaged, but it'll fall through when he goes missing on an archaeological dig.
"Through the Lens of Time" shows Korby in action as an archaeologist. He and a small away team, including Spock (Ethan Peck), LA'an (Christina Chong), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Beto Ortegas (Mynor Luken), discover what appears to be...

Even though Netflix has a strong policy about distributing its movies for streaming only, the streamer is making a shocking exception for good reason. Before becoming the streaming giant that it is today, Netflix was once the go-to place to rent DVDs for movies. However, they soon led the way in transitioning to a streaming platform, making it accessible for movie lovers to access films right from home.
Since then, the brand has catapulted into a major distributor and producer, with their original content, including Red Notice, Carry On, and more. While Netflix has made a few attempts to distribute its movies to theaters, like Glass Onion, the studio has a strong stance of making movies exclusive to streaming. Even their CEO, Ted Sarandos, called the theater approach "outdated," creating quite a discord about the state of the movie industry today.

Pedro Pascal is staying within the “Star Wars” family, but this time, for an indie film. IndieWire can confirm that the “Mandalorian” actor is in talks to lead “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy’s feature “Behemoth!” for Searchlight Pictures. Deadline reported that the deal is not yet closed.
The plot remains still under wraps but the feature is believed to be centered on a cellist. Oscar Isaac was originally attached in the lead role, which Pascal is now eyeing. Gilroy will produce the yet-untitled film along with Sanne Wohlenberg. Principal photography will begin this fall in Los Angeles, with release plans to be announced at a later date.
Pascal has been playing musical chairs to juggle his full slate of projects: The actor appeared in “The Last of Us: Season 2, “Materialists,” “Eddington,” and “Fantastic Four: First Steps” all in 2025. He will reprise his “Fantastic Four” role of Reed Richards for “Avengers: Doomsday...

Jim Carrey almost starred in a live-action anime movie based on one of Hayao Miyazaki's most prolific films. The legendary comedic actor was initially cast as the live-action American version of Lupin III in a film written by the co-writer of Hellboy (2004).
Peter Briggs, an English screenwriter who worked with Guillermo del Toro on the live-action version of Hellboy, nearly brought another iconic character to life in the early aughts. In a social media post shared on Bluesky (@/thepeterbriggs.bsky.social), Briggs revealed he wrote a script for a live-action movie adaptation of Lupin III, which would have starred Carrey in the titular role. The scrapped film would have drawn inspiration from the most influential stories in Lupin III's history, such as The Castle of Cagliostro, which is not only considered one of the best animated Lupin III movies, but also one of Miyazaki's finest works.

The literary science fiction classic, Frankenstein, is getting another adaptation courtesy of one of the most exciting filmmakers working right now. Not only that, this latest take on Mary Shelley's iconic novel has scored an Academy Award-nominee and MCU star, and, incidentally, one of the most exciting working actors, to lead the project, which will put a wild twist on the tale of “The Modern Prometheus.”
Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World director Radu Jude (who has been described as “something else” by filmmaking icon Martin Scorsese) will helm a new take on Frankenstein, giving it a modern twist, with Avengers: Endgame and Thunderbolts* star Sebastian Stan, who has experience with monsters after earning an Oscar nod for starring as Donald Trump in The Apprentice, now on board to star.

Sebastian Stan Joins Jacob Elordi and Christian Bale in Third Frankenstein Movie by Dracula Director
Rudy Jude is currently penning his own Frankenstein movie, which could star Sebastian Stan in the lead. Although the actor is yet to break his silence on the subject, the filmmaker, who has garnered laudation from Martin Scorsese for his works, told Cultura la dubă that Stan has said yes to his offer.
I pitched it to Sebastian, and he said yes. So I’ve started writing the script, but it’ll take some time.
While a release window is yet to be unveiled for the movie, if this does pull through, it’ll be the third live-action Frankenstein movie to get greenlit in the current climate, with the other two from Maggie Gyllenhaal and Guillermo del Toro.

Quentin Tarantino has diminished the value of Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune movies, citing the repetitive nature of remakes and reboots. However, Villeneuve couldn’t care less about the veteran filmmaker’s opinion. During an interview on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Qt revealed:
I saw [David Lynch’s] ‘Dune’ a couple of times. I don’t need to see that story again. I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘spice’ so dramatically. It’s one after another of this remake and that remake.
But Villeneuve was left unimpressed by such minimization of his work. While speaking at a Q&a panel at the Concordia University film school, the director responded to Tarantino’s comments about his films with a nonchalant “I don’t care.” [The Montreal Gazette]

AMC+ has been thriving lately, between the premiere of Shazad Latif's acclaimed swashbuckling 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea prequel series Nautilus and the return of The Walking Dead: Dead City for Season 2 back in May. While both have been streaming favorites since their release, they were recently challenged by an unexpected horror anthology. In the past week, 2019's The Mortuary Collection had overtaken the Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan-led spin-off series on the platform's streaming charts, ranking as high as fifth overall. Notably, it features one of Hollywood's brightest young stars, Jacob Elordi, in a starring role, making it a fitting watch ahead of his latest horror role in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein.
The Mortuary Collection made its debut at Fantastic Fest in 2019 to rave reviews before coming to Shudder for the spooky season in 2020. As the name suggests, it features a collection of creepy stories...

Could this be the next Anora for Neon?
Brazilian political thriller The Secret Agent won four prizes at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival: writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho won the Fipresci Prize, the Afcae Art House Cinema Award, and Best Director, while star Wagner Moura won Best Actor.
Neon picked it up for North American distribution at the festival, along with Palme d’Or winner It Was Just an Accident and second-place Grand Prix winner Sentimental Value, the latter of which is likely Neon’s strongest awards contender this year (it’s currently sitting at #2 in Gold Derby’s combined odds for a Best Picture nomination). The independent distributor hopes to replicate the success it had with Anora, which went from taking Cannes’ top prize to winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Secret Agent appears to be Neon’s third-strongest contender coming out of the festival.

Guillermo del Toro explains why Jacob Elordi ended up playing the monster in ‘Frankenstein’ instead of Andrew Garfield.
Guillermo del Toro has confirmed a major change in his upcoming Netflix production ‘Frankenstein’, which was originally set to feature Andrew Garfield as the monster. However, Garfield stepped down from the project due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by Jacob Elordi. The shift came as a surprise, particularly since del Toro and his team had spent nine months designing the character based on Garfield.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, del Toro revealed that Garfield’s departure forced the team to recast the role under intense time pressure. The revelation is all the more surprising given that the design process had been built around Garfield over the course of nine months.

From Frankenstein to the Island of Doctor Moreau, genre writers have thoroughly explored the horrors that can result from scientists playing God. However, as real life science continues to evolve, it makes sense that our bogeymen have also changed in order to adapt to modern fears.
I was reminded of this while watching Jurassic World: Rebirth; regardless of the film’s overall quality, the misshapen D-Rex marks a return to the genetically-engineered terror of Michael Crichton’s original novel – a sci-fi/horror trope that I think is in dire need of a comeback. And in honor of the test tube scares of yesteryear, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest genetically engineered monstrosities in film!
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining “genetic engineering” as the intentional manipulation of DNA with the goal of creating a new lifeform. This means...

La historia no necesita presentación: un científico brillante, pero cegado por su propio ego, desafía a la naturaleza y crea vida, sin medir las consecuencias. El resultado es un experimento monstruoso que acabará devorándolo todo, incluido a él mismo.

Willem Dafoe will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival, awarded in recognition of his contribution to the art of film.
During the event, the actor will hold a Masterclass where he will share his experience and reflections on the art.
Jovan Marjanović, the festival director, said: “Every time he steps in front of the camera, he demonstrates that he is a true master of his craft. Whether starring in a Hollywood blockbuster or a low-budget independent film, his characters are always complex, emotional and unforgettable.”
In 1979, Dafoe was given a role in Michael Cimino’s “Heaven’s Gate,” from which he was fired. Since then, he has collaborated with directors who represent an encyclopedia of world cinema, including Wes Anderson, Kathryn Bigelow, Tim Burton, David Cronenberg, Mary Harron, Walter Hill, Spike Lee, David Lynch, Paul Schrader, Martin Scorsese, Zack Snyder, Guillermo del Toro, Yorgos Lanthimos and Zhang Yimou.

"I'm done hiding, now I'm shining like I'm born to be." That's the chorus of Huntr/X's hit single "Golden," which shot to the top of the Billboard Global 200 not just once but twice as the film "KPop Demon Hunters" has become a bonafide blockbuster for Netflix.
Produced by the team at Sony Pictures Animation, who also brought us the "Spider-Verse" films, "KPop Demon Hunters" follows the exploits of a K-pop girl group that, as the title quickly explains, hunts demons. But they find their toughest match when the demons use their own weapon against them, forming a demon boy band that threatens to destroy everything the girls in Huntr/X hold dear.
Using the power of song and dance to protect the human world from demon interlopers, the film uses the infectious beats of Korean pop music to bring the classic genre of animated musicals into the 21st century.

“Folktales,” in theaters right now, is one of the most moving and beautiful movies of the year.
It follows a few kids as they attend Pasvik Folk High School in Norway. This is where kids come from all over to learn fundamentals while also taking part in camping, hunting and working with sled dogs.
In TheWrap’s exclusive clip below, the group of Gen Zers are shown in the classroom absorbing the teachings of one of the sled leaders; it wonderfully encapsulates the movie’s singular power. (There’s a reason this movie was one of the breakouts from this year’s Sundance Film Festival.)
We also sent some questions to Ewing and Grady, who graciously answered below.
How did you know about the school? And when did it first come to you to make a film about the school?
During Covid, Heidi had heard Blair Braverman, an American dog sledder on a podcast,...

Netflix's approach to theatrical distribution has been called out by the CEO of one of the United States' biggest theater chains. The popular streaming service generally releases their original movies directly onto their platform, without theatrical or physical media releases.
While some Netflix movies, particularly those that the company wishes to be eligible for Academy Awards, do run in theaters, their runs tend to be cursory and, almost without exception, take place in limited theaters.
This remained the case even after 2022's Glass Onion debuted at No. 3 during its one-week run, despite playing in significantly fewer theaters (696) than many prominent movies below it on the domestic chart, including Devotion, The Menu, Black Adam, and Bones and All.
Per Deadline, Cinemark CEO Shawn Gamble criticized Netflix's approach of avoiding sending their streaming movies to theaters during a recent earnings call with analysts.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers from “The Sandman” second and final season bonus episode, “Death: The High Cost of Living,” now streaming on Netflix.
The final chapter of Netflix’s “The Sandman” has no dreams, only death.
Titled, “Death: The High Cost of Living,” the bonus episode — which launched Friday, one week after the final season of “The Sandman” concluded — is based on a one-shot comic series from author Neil Gaiman that focuses on Dream’s (Tom Sturridge) sister Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and the time she spends as a human once every 100 years. During this particular visit, she meets a disillusioned young man named Sexton Furnival (Colin Morgan) and tries to help him reconcile his recent suicidal feelings.
So why was this story — one that doesn’t even include the titular character — chosen as the last piece fans will get of this version of “The Sandman,” following the 11-episode second and final season?...

Disney has unveiled an exciting new trailer for Zootopia 2, offering fans their best look yet at its long-awaited animated sequel. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman reprise their voice roles as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde in the latest footage that sees the beloved detective duo return nearly a decade after their first big-screen outing, which became a billion-dollar hit at the worldwide box office. They are finally back in action and doing what they do best in the mammal metropolis, with only a small detour to "dysfunction junction" en route to the big city.
The trailer for Zootopia 2 sees Hopps and Wilde attending group counseling for seemingly mismatched police partners, overseen by Dr. Fuzzby, an adorable quokka who is small in stature but wise with words. The voice might be familiar to viewers as it hails from Abbott Elementary star and creator Quinta Brunson. "Welcome to 'Partners in Crisis.

Two figures very close to Pedro Almodovar, his longtime producer Esther García and repeat star Marisa Paredes, will be honored by Spain’s most prestigious film festival, San Sebastián.

Paredes, who died in December, will feature on this year’s San Sebastian poster.

Guillermo del Toro’s long‑nurtured vision of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will premiere in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in late August and stream worldwide on Netflix in November 2025, according to studio representatives who released the first production stills.
The images show Jacob Elordi towering in ragged bandages as a creature whose cracked‑marble skin evokes antique sculpture, a deliberate shift from the stitched brute of earlier films. Del Toro has framed the monster as “deeply human,” an approach already stirring debate among horror purists while drawing praise from admirers of his empathetic genre style.
Elordi accepted the part only weeks before cameras rolled after Andrew Garfield exited amid post‑strike scheduling conflicts, and the director now calls the six‑foot‑five actor “the most perfect choice for the creature.” Oscar Isaac embodies Victor Frankenstein inside a 360‑degree water‑tower laboratory constructed on a Toronto soundstage,...

With Frankenstein, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (Pinocchio, Cabinet of Curiosities, The Shape of Water) adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
The project is a lifelong dream finally fulfilled for the Hellboy filmmaker, and Vanity Fair (via FearHQ.com) has finally revealed a first look at Jacob Elordi as the titular scientist's horrifying monster.
Talking to the site, del Toro said, "These are the parallels between Pinocchio and Frankenstein. It’s the idea of a person going from a baby to a human being in a short span of time and being exposed to everything—cold, warmth, violence, love, loss. And then going to his creator to say, 'Why? Why did you put me here? Why didn’t you give me the answers?...

Star Wars mastermind George Lucas made history this weekend when he followed up on his promise that 2025 would be the year that he appeared at San Diego Comic-Con. To the cheers of fans that were present at the event, Lucas entered the room and received a standing ovation. Nevertheless, he didn't attend the event to announce anything regarding Star Wars. Instead, he did so to announce the presentation of the new Lucasfilm project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
Per the report by Joblo, Lucas appeared on a panel that also included director Guillermo del Toro, VFX artist Doug Chiang and moderator Queen Latifah. Together they presented the museum project and even showed a few sketches of the massive structure. "I've been doing this for 50 years, and it occurred to me: 'What am I going to do with it all?' Because I refuse to sell it," Lucas said about the museum,...

See the images below, along with everything we know about the film, which should prominently figure into the Oscar conversation.
