10 TV Shows That Should Have Ended After Season 1
Image
There have been plenty of TV shows that astound viewers with an incredible first season, only for it to quickly decline in quality and make them feel like it should have just remained one great miniseries. This can often be the case when a show was initially planned as a one-off series but became so popular that it was artificially extended despite there being no real artistic drive to continue telling the characters story. This also commonly occurred when a TV show based on a book was forced to move past its source material in later seasons.

While many great shows were canceled after just one season, there were plenty of others that continued when they shouldnt have. There have also been some great anthology shows that got everything right in their debut season, yet when it was time to shake things up with a new cast of characters for...

‘Monsterland’ Star Trieu Tran on Being the Rare Asian American Leading Man
Image
When Trieu Tran auditioned for Hulu’s horror anthology series “Monsterland,” he didn’t anticipate being a lead or that his character’s life would, in some ways, mirror so much of his own.

In the episode titled “Palacios, TX,” Tran stars as Sharko, a down-on-his-luck fisherman suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Copd) who discovers a mermaid washed up on-shore, played by Adria Arjona. He brings her home, defending her from other greedy fishermen. The two engage in a dreamy romance, a touching if temporary salve to his persisting loneliness that, ultimately, ends in tragedy.

The emotional richness of Sharko’s story is one the veteran stage, film and TV actor says he rarely gets to play on-screen. “When I was reading the script, I’m like, ‘Man, I finally get to play a fleshed-out character with an arc,” Tran tells Variety. “He’s Asian American, he’s the...

‘Monsterland’ Showrunner Talks Centering Women’s Experiences In A Male-Dominated Genre – PaleyFest
Image
The horror genre is a fun one in that it can go in many directions, but it is often dominated by men in front of and behind the camera. Hulu’s new anthology series Monsterland, which debuts Friday, subverts that expectation with a female showrunner and a cast and crew dominated by women.

Monsterland creator and showrunner Mary Laws was joined by actress Kelly Marie Tran and director of photography Anka Malatynska and director Desiree Akhavan at the virtual PaleyFest Fall TV Previews event to talk about the new series and how it champions female narratives.

“I think that its safe to say that as forward-moving as Hollywood is, I don’t think there are opportunities for women’s stories on screen, for women in leadership roles and for women protagonist roles,” said Laws. “I think so often I found myself in a room with a lot of men making...

Trade Of Innocents Review: Well-Intentioned Yet Extremely Flawed Melodrama
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

I’ll be honest here: I really wanted to like Trade of Innocents. Human trafficking is one of the largest criminal enterprises, and it poses a global problem. And this film, directed by Christopher Bessette, aims to raise some much-needed awareness and action, including links in the credits, promotional materials, and the film’s own website to Justice-Generation, which has information on resources for advocacy and action to prevent and combat trafficking. I admire Bessette’s attempts to use film as a way to get the message out, which makes it all the harder to write this review, given that this movie is just very clunky.

Alex Becker (Dermont Mulroney) is a former American soldier and a human trafficking investigator operating in Cambodia. His organization is working to bring down a slaver named Duke (Trieu Tran), who is in the process of securing very young virgins for foreign pedophiles.

The Creative Coalition's Spotlight Initiative Selects - Trade of Innocents
The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative

Selects monterey media’s Trade of Innocents

Highlights Reality of Human Trafficking

The Creative Coalition announced today that monterey media’s Trade of Innocents, (Isa: Worldwide Film Entertainment), has been selected for the organization’s prestigious Spotlight Initiative. The film highlights the shocking reality of human trafficking.

The Creative Coalition created the Spotlight Initiative as an integrated partnership that champions the art and craft of independent filmmaking by expanding a film’s outreach to leaders in business, entertainment, arts, and policy. Each year, The Creative Coalition selects up to ten movies - both feature films and documentaries - to be included in the Spotlight Initiative.

Trade of Innocents stars Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding, J. Edgar, Big Miracle, The Grey) and Academy Award-winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) who play a couple grieving the loss of their own daughter while working to rescue children victimized by sex trafficking in Cambodia. The film also stars John Billingsley (2012) and Trieu Tran (Tropic Thunder,“Newsroom”) and shows the problems facing those who want to bring justice to the seedy brothels of underworld commercial sexual exploitation of children, including extreme poverty, cultural complications, and police and government complicity in crime.

Dermot Mulroney said, “I am thrilled that Trade of Innocents was selected by The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative. This is that rare film that manages to be a gripping thriller, deeply compelling, heartbreaking, and based on real events. At the same time, it sheds light on this important issue that is rarely depicted in films. The persistence of the problem of human trafficking continues to prove that it will take all the efforts of committed world citizens to begin to make a dent in and eventually end human trafficking and slavery in all forms.”

Mira Sorvino said, “I am very proud that this film is part of The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative. As a Unodc Goodwill Ambassador to combat human trafficking, I know most people are unaware that this terrible trade of children for sexual exploitation flourishes both in the Us and around the globe; Trade of Innocents will open their eyes and their hearts, and inspire them to become part of the solution.”

Trade of Innocents is written and directed by Christopher Bessette (The Enemy God) and Produced by William Bolthouse,Laurie Bolthouse, and Jim Schmidt.
