The end has come for Freeform series Cruel Summer and Good Trouble. The Disney-owned cable net has canceled Cruel Summer after two seasons and Good Trouble will end with the second half of its upcoming fifth season, Deadline has confirmed.

We hear Good Trouble will be given the opportunity to film some additional scenes for a supersized series finale episode to properly wrap up the series. Season 5B premieres on January 2.

The series were Freeform’s last remaining scripted originals following the November cancellation of animated comedy Praise Petey.

Freeform has cancelled its last two remaining scripted series, Good Trouble and Cruel Summer, TVLine has confirmed.

The Fosters spinoff Good Trouble will conclude with the back half of its fifth season (premiering Tuesday, Jan. 2), while the anthology series Cruel Summer wrapped up its second (and now final) season on July 31. With the axing of the animated comedy Praise Petey in November and grown-ish slated to air its final episodes in 2024, that leaves the future of Freeform’s scripted slate up in the air.

Freeform will not be moving forward with new seasons of “Cruel Summer” and “Good Trouble,” Variety has confirmed.

An anthology series, Season 2 of of “Cruel Summer” followed the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship. “Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan, Isabella and Megan’s best friend Luke, the love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward,” reads the official description.

After making waves with its explosive first season (which averaged multiplatform+35 viewership of 6.8 million viewers per episode) that quickly became the network’s most-watched series ever, Freeform followed up the performance with a fast Season 2 renewal in 2021 — a move Freeform president Tara Duncan called an “easy decision” at the time.

The stakes have grown. Time is running out. And for the characters that inhabit the slightly twisted, duplicitous world of Cruel Summer, this means potentially more than just kidnapping. It could mean murder. For Megan and Isabella, only the viewers could determine who would emerge free and who would vanish in handcuffs. Freeform‘s breakout anthology series Cruel Summer is set to return for a second season this summer, featuring a new cast and a new mystery. On Wednesday, the network released a first look at the new ensemble.

The cast includes Sadie Stanley, Lexi Underwood, Griffin Gluck, KaDee Strickland, Lisa Yamada and Sean Blakemore. Paul Adelstein will recur. Freeform hasn’t given a specific release date for the season yet.

Bullock will recur as Jeff, a filmmaker who is more comfortable experiencing life from behind the camera lens. He has long nursed a crush on Megan and finally gets the opportunity to make his feelings clear.

Cruel Summer is officially going the anthology route: Season 2 of the Freeform psychological drama will feature a different mystery that will include a new cast and showrunner.

Sadie Stanley (The Goldbergs), newcomer Eloise Payet Lexi Underwood (Little Fires Everywhere) and Griffin Gluck (Locke & Key, Private Practice) will lead the series, with KaDee Strickland (Private Practice), Lisa Yamada (Little Fires Everywhere) and Sean Blakemore (General Hospital, Greenleaf) rounding out the ensemble. Additionally, Paul Adelstein (Private Practice) will recur, reuniting him with Strickland and Gluck, who played his wife and son on Private Practice.

Freeform has lined up the cast and announced the newcomers and storyline for the second season of “Cruel Summer.”

The anthology series will follow a new set of characters in the Y2K era.

Here’s the logline: “Set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest, the next chapter of ‘Cruel Summer’ follows the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship. Here’s the casting details announced Thursday:

Sadie Stanley (“The Goldbergs”) is playing Megan Landry, “a computer coder and honor student from a blue-collar family. Once Megan meets Isabella, she begins to live in the moment and embrace her true self.

When Cruel Summer Season 2 returns to Freeform for Season 2, it will have a new cast, story, and leadership.

The cabler today confirmed the series returns as an anthology with a fresh mystery and cast.

Executive produced by Emmy® Award nominee Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple through Iron Ocean Productions and from studio eOne, Cruel Summer Season 1 was a critical and ratings smash, making it Freeform’s most-watched series in network history.

Amazon is getting into the Ya business.

The Jennifer Salke-run studio announced Thursday it has greenlit three pilots in the young adult genre: “Panic,” from writer Lauren Oliver based on her The New York Times best-selling book, “The Wilds” from Sarah Streicher (“Daredevil”), and drama “College” from creator Marja-Lewis Ryan (“6 Balloons”).

The trio of orders boasts a roster of big-name executive producers, including Channing Tatum, “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway, Jamie Tarses and Lauren Oliver.

Amazon is gearing up for a stronger push into the young adult space with the order of three Ya pilots.

The projects are: “Panic,” from writer Lauren Oliver based on her The New York Times best-selling book; “The Wilds” from Sarah Streicher; and drama series “College” from creator Marja-Lewis Ryan. These pilots mark the first television projects for all three creators.

In addition, Jill Soloway and Channing Tatum serve as exeutive producers on “College,” with the project falling under Soloway’s overall deal with the streamer.

“We see Ya programming as a big opportunity to expand our entertainment offerings for Prime Video and we are actively pursuing projects that spark conversation and co-viewing,” said Albert Cheng, co-head of television for Amazon Studios.

The orders mark the first pilot pick ups under Jennifer Salke since she was named head of Amazon Studios in February.

Eva Longoria‘s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment has set up two more projects – a comedy at NBC and drama at Lifetime. The NBC project stars rising comedian Erik Rivera and is based on his life and standup. Comedy veteran Peter Murrieta will write the script and will executive produce with Scott Ellis, who is set to direct, and UnbeliEVAble’s Longoria and Ben Spector. The project stems from a deal UnbeliEVAble made with Rivera earlier this year to develop a vehicle based on his comedy. The setup is reminiscent of ABC’s The George Lopez Show, which also started with a well known actress, Sandra Bullock, championing a Latino comedian on the rise, Lopez, and partnering him with an established sitcom showrunner, Bruce Helford, for a comedy project starring Lopez and based on his standup. “I know what a woman in love looks like Emily, and it isn’t you. It wasn’t a year ago and it isn’t now”. Revenge is closing in on its second season finale and “Engagement” finds some of the season’s biggest revelations coming to light.

“Engagement” starts off as a slow episode and doesn’t seem very promising, but it quickly takes off, beginning with Daniel’s announcement that he and Emily have renewed their engagement. Given Emily’s real reason for the engagement it isn’t all that surprising that she has convinced Daniel to get married in Paris and move there. Her ultimate goal has always been to rip everything away from Victoria.

It’s no secret that Revenge had lost its way earlier this season but with Amanda’s death at the end of the last episode, Emily’s desire to destroy the Graysons has been renewed and so has the show.

The Graysons are scrambling and in a panic trying to get out from under the Initiative, which is an interesting position to see them in, but it’s obvious that the Initiative storyline is winding down. Hopefully Emily’s new motivation for revenge will put the show back on track.

When Emily tells Victoria, “You must feel so helpless” early in the episode, it is an obvious taunt and even a promise. Losing control is Victoria’s greatest fear, but losing control of her children is even scarier.

“Emily’s fate rests with you” Aidan (Barry Sloane) reminds Nolan. In making the biggest financial sacrifice, the writers have shown that Nolan’s (Gabriel Mann) really the only character willing to make compromises and sacrifices for other people. Emily might forget it sometimes but Nolan is really an important and massive player in her world.

Now that Treadwell knows Emily’s biggest secret, I’m curious to see in what direction the show will go. Before Treadwell was simply a nuisance. Now’s he’s a nuisance with a terrible secret and in telling Kara (Jennifer Jason Leigh) the truth about his book on David Clarke, he’s already made a major misstep.

Louis Godfrey: Well, we had to wait a few weeks, but Revenge has returned, and the drama with Tyler, the craven, extorting, sexually flexible psychotic living in the Grayson’s pool house, finally came to a head. But before we get to that (anti-)climax, I have to point out all the impotence this episode was swimming in.

Figuratively, I mean, or at least mostly figuratively. I’m slowly starting to see Daniel Grayson not as some likeable schmuck, but as an arrogant frat boy who basks in his privilege while being continuously propped up by others.
