The five-hour drama consists of two gripping episodes, then two meandering episodes and finally a conclusion of hastily resolved catharsis. Carried by a raw, heartbreaking lead performance by Colin Firth, it’s consistently watchable, but lacking the necessary focus to be truly exceptional.

Black Doves episode 2, “A Little Black Dove,” takes viewers back a decade in the first scene. It’s 2014, and Helen, played by Keira Knightley, sits down for a job interview as a translator for a company. She explains the many gaps in her resume, and the interviewer hints that he knows more about her past, which seems to include some tragedy that resulted in her stepsister killing her stepfather.

If you watch episode 2 back to back with episode 1, it’s definitely a change of pace, almost a pause. Remember, Helen and Sam (Ben Whishaw) were about to confront the person who killed Helen’s lover, Jason (Andrew Koji).

Anyway, Helen tries to leave the meeting, but the man gives her a phone number. He explains that she’ll be calling a woman, Reed (Sarah Lancashire). The man says that she needs to tell Reed that she is “a little Black Dove.

Keira Knightley’s latest project is the Netflix spy thriller series Black Doves, which is set at Christmas in London. Netflix has already ordered a second series, such is its level of confidence.

The cast also includes Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Sam Troughton, Ella Lily Hyland, Adam Silver, Ken Nwosu, Gabrielle Creevy and Omari Douglas.

The show, due to stream as we’re all opening our Peppa Pig advent calendars in December, is written by Joe Barton, who also wrote the terrific BBC series Giri/Haji.

The show is the latest splashy offering from Netflix UK, which has made a slew of hits this year including Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen. It is being co-produced by Sister, which has just seen its previous Netflix show, Kaos, axed after one season. Barton’s outfit Noisy Bear is co-producing.

All is status quo until her spymaster, Reed (Sarah Lancashire) delivers the news that her lover, Jason (Andrew Koji), was assassinated.
