Edko Films’ disaster film Cesium Fallout has bounced to the top of China’s box office from Monday (November 4) after opening in second place behind Venom: The Last Dance.

It had grossed a total of $16.8m (RMB120m) as of November 7, up from its $12.1 (RMB86.5m) opening weekend, which included previews.

The Cantonese-speaking Guangdong province in southern China contributed significantly to the film’s success, accounting for 26.8% of its nationwide cumulative box office. Global streamer Netflix has picked up select international streaming rights to the much anticipated Chinese fantasy suspense series See Her Again. Currently in postproduction, the show is expected to drop later this year simultaneously on Netflix and Chinese streamer Tencent Video. The deal was unveiled this week at the ongoing 29th Shanghai TV Festival.

See Her Again is produced by Tencent Video and Hong Kong production banner Drama Apple. The 18-episode series was the only Asian show selected to compete for the Coup de Coeur Award at MIPTV’s MIPDrama Screenings in April.

In a battle of two Universal titles at the U.K., Ireland box office, animation film “Migration” flew to the top, besting star-studded caper “Argylle” in the process.

“Migration” debuted with £3.5 million ($4.4 million), according to numbers from Comscore. “Argylle,” a global under performer, bowed in second place with £2 million.

In third position, in its third weekend, Paramount’s “Mean Girls” earned £843,601 for a total of £6.8 million. Disney’s “All of Us Strangers” collected £797,004 in fourth place in its second weekend for a total of £2.7 million.

Rounding off the top five was A24’s “The Zone of Interest,” which debuted with £585,855. The only other bow in the Top 10 was Curzon-Amazon MGM’s “American Fiction” with £389,375.

Coming up, opening mid-week on Wednesday Feb. 7 is horror-comedy “Dagr” from Fizz and Ginger Films. Feb. 8 sees the release of Tamil-language sports and gangster drama “Lal Salaam,” headlined by Indian superstar Rajinikanth.

There are a plethora of releases on the Friday.

Lawrence Kan’s newsroom drama In Broad Daylight leads the pack going into the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards with 16 nominations.

The feature, which follows an undercover journalist who exposes the abuse of residents in a nursing home, secured nods in all but three of the 19 categories. It marks the second feature by Kan and proved the fourth highest grossing local film in 2023.

A rather entertaining movie, with acceptable special effects, and a script that does not lack humor.

Its director, Yuen Fai Ng, with his creative background in the special effects world, knows how to make good use of his know-how.

Do not expect profundity in the characterizations, as this is pure action. The acting and the script are not particularly convincing, but it is nevertheless an amusing number.

Riding on the box office success in Hong Kong of its “Table for Six,” Edko Films, the production, distribution and exhibition conglomerate headed by Bill Kong (“Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”), is launching a trio of new titles at the American Film Market this week.

One titles is courtroom drama “A Guilty Conscience,” which follows the aftermath of a manslaughter case in which a barrister’s mistake lands his supermodel client in jail. The path to an appeal, however, seems like justice itself is on trial.

Writer and director Jack Ng is making his feature directing debut on the drama; his track record as a writer that includes Edko’s 2021 hit “Anita” and “Cold War II.” The company’s confidence is such that the picture is set as Edko’s biggest title for the crucial Chinese New Year slot. Fox Networks Group Asia is unveiling two Chinese-language miniseries at this week’s Filmart in Hong Kong – The Trading Floor, produced by Andy Lau’s [pictured] Focus Television, and Stained, written and directed by Patrick Kong.

The Trading Floor is a 5 x 60 minute thriller set in Hong Kong’s financial industry. It has been written and will be directed by Kk Wong, director-producer of 2014 hit Hong Kong TV show The Election.

Stained, which also has a 5 x 60 minute format, is a crime thriller starring Kara Hui, Kwan-ho Tse and Anthony Wong.

Both shows are in pre-production for target delivery in 2017.
