Image
An upcoming documentary about Ozzy Osbourne’s health setbacks in recent years and his desire to stage a farewell concert will still arrive later this year despite the heavy metal legend’s death Tuesday.

No Escape From Now, described as “a deeply personal portrait of the rock legend’s harsh new realities and his battle to take the stage for one final performance,” will hit Paramount+ this autumn, a rep for the filmmakers confirmed to Rolling Stone.

“We are truly heartbroken to hear the news of Ozzy’s passing,” Phil and Tania Alexander,...

Billy Idol Remembers Ozzy Osbourne: “He Opened Musical Doorways for People Like Me”
Image
Billy Idol is one of many in the music industry grieving Tuesday after the legendary Ozzy Osbourne died at age 76. In Idol’s case, he credits Osbourne for “showing us the way” to succeed as punk-rockers. Just last October, Idol helped celebrate Ozzy’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist by performing “No More Tears” at the ceremony, joined by his bandmate Steve Stevens, one-time Oz collaborators Zakk Wylde and Robert Trujillo, along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith. During interviews at the time, Ozzy praised Idol and said he, too, should be inducted into the Cleveland shrine, and it was no coincidence that Billy found his name among this year’s nominees, even if he didn’t make the cut this time. Here, Idol remembers Osbourne for his indelible mark on music and the path he carved for those who came after him.

Metallica Scholars Initiative Commits $3 Million to Workforce Education
Image
Metallica’s non-profit All Within My Hands Foundation has announced that its Metallica Scholars Initiative is launching its seventh year by committing $3 million to workforce education. The initiative is also bringing 15 new colleges into the fold, raising the total number of participating schools to 75 across all 50 US states and the territory of Guam, reaching an estimated 10,000 students.

Founded in 2019 in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (Aacc), the Metallica Scholars Initiative began with a modest 10 schools focused on manufacturing. Today, it supports a wide range of career and technical education fields including AI, air traffic control, agricultural technologies, construction, welding, commercial driving, and advanced manufacturing — all high-demand, well-paying sectors in the American workforce.

Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo stated, “I could not be any prouder of our Metallica Scholars. We know that our country needs millions of skilled tradespeople, and it warms my heart to know that our Foundation...

Metallica Pay Respect to Black Sabbath with Thunderous “Back to the Beginning” Set
Image
Metallica had the honor of being the last band to perform before Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath at the “Back to the Beginning” concert in Birmingham, England, on Saturday (July 5th), marking the final performances of the latter two acts.

Frontman James Hetfield and company launched their set with a cover of Sabbath’s “Hole in the Sky,” before playing “Creeping Death” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Metallica then took on Sabbath’s “Johnny Blade,” followed by “Battery” and “Master of Puppets.”

Metallica’s set followed performances by Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool, Pantera, Gojira, and others, as well as a couple of all-star superjams featuring members of Rage Against the Machine, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ghost, Aerosmith, and more. See our complete coverage here.

Prior to the concert, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo spoke with Heavy Consequence about the importance of being at Black Sabbath’s final show.

Noah Weiland Covers Velvet Revolver’s “Slither” with Video Featuring AI-Generated Slash and Duff Making Out
Image
Noah Weiland has covered “Slither” by his late father Scott Weiland’s band Velvet Revolver, complete with a trippy video featuring AI versions of Slash and Duff McKagan making out with each other.

Earlier this year, Noah covered “Sex Type Thing” by Scott’s band Stone Temple Pilots, accompanied by a video inspired by “a dream I had long ago about seeing my father again.”

On Father’s Day (June 15th), Noah released a cover of “Slither” with a wild effects-laden video, depicting the young singer walking through water as a number of bizarre scenes play out. At certain points we see Scott holding Noah as a small child, a Spider-Man battle, and perhaps most oddly, AI-generated images of Velvet Revolver members Slash and Duff McKagan locking lips with one another amid a sea of money.

“The video is supposed to be like a gnarly fever dream,” Weiland told Rolling Stone.

Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett Play Fugazi’s “Waiting Room” at Metallica’s D.C.-Area Concert: Watch
Image
As they’ve been doing throughout Metallica’s “M72 World Tour,” bassist Robert Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett performed a local-inspired “doodle” at the band’s show in Landover, Maryland on Wednesday night (May 28th). With the show taking place in the greater Washington, D.C. area, the pair paid tribute to the legendary Fugazi.

Trujillo and Hammett’s Fugazi tribute consisted of them performing the intro to the classic “Waiting Room,” with Trujillo playing the iconic bass riff that made Consequence‘s list of the 50 Greatest Basslines of All Time.

Heavy Consequence also heard from a reliable source that Fugazi singer-guitarist and all-around hardcore legend Ian MacKaye was in the “Snakepit” section of the audience, with a smile on his face.

The “doodle” portion of the show also saw Trujillo and Hammett play the Metallica rarity “Just a Bullet Away” from the 2011 Beyond Magnetic EP.

Rush’s Alex Lifeson Recently Jammed with Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo: “I Loved Every Second”
Image
In a new interview, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson revealed that he recently had dinner with Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo — an evening that culminated with an impromptu jam session.

Speaking with prog-rock site Sea of Tranquility, Lifeson said he went out for dinner with the Metallica members in Toronto for the “M72 World Tour” last week, and the veteran musicians ended up jamming for a few hours afterward at Lifeson’s house.

“They came over after dinner and we played for a few hours, and it was great,” Lifeson said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), explaining that the trio locked into a simple blues vamp before getting more adventurous, much to the Rush guitarist’s delight.

“Often in the past, if you jam with a bunch of people, we’d play a 12-bar bluesy thing; everybody can play that: ‘Let’s do that,'” Lifeson said.

Image
Tool are one of the bands that will play the upcoming all-star “Back to the Beginning” concert featuring the final performances of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne. However, singer Maynard James Keenan says it may take “modern miracles” to get Ozzy onstage given the metal icon’s physical limitations.

The day-long concert at Villa Park in Birmingham, England, will also feature mini-sets from Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira, Alice in Chains, Halestorm, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Anthrax, and more, leading up to the final performances from Ozzy and Sabbath.

In a new interview with Loudwire Nights (as transcribed by ThePRP), Keenan discussed how Tool became involved in the concert, as well as his concerns for Ozzy’s physical condition at the show.

Image
Metallica played their first show of 2025 on Saturday night (April 19th), performing a career-spanning set at the Jma Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York.

They Syracuse concert was one of several single-night-only shows on this spring North American run (tickets available here), as opposed to the “no repeat weekends” they’ve been playing over two nights in most cities on this ongoing “M72 World Tour.” That meant that fans at Saturday’s gig got elements of both sets in one night.

Metallica’s 16-song set represented nine of their 10 studio albums, as they played songs from every studio LP except 2003’s St. Anger.

Frontman James Hetfield and company launched the set with a 1-2 punch from 1984’s Ride the Lightning: “Creeping Death” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” The band played three songs from 1991’s self-titled effort, aka “The Black Album,” including “Nothing Else Matters,...

Metallica Are All in Their 60s — But Kirk Hammett Says There’s No Retirement Anywhere in Sight
Image
Metallica’s members are all in their 60s, and their music is way more physically demanding than anything their classic-rock forebears have had to tackle onstage — but lead guitarist Kirk Hammett tells our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast that he doesn’t see retirement on the horizon.

“As long as we have our health and our mind, I think we can just keep on going,” says Hammett, whose new coffee-table book, The Collection: Kirk Hammett, dives into his world-class arsenal of vintage guitars. “Sometimes I forget how old I am,...

Metallica’s Robert Trujillo on New Apple Vision Pro Concert: “It’s Like You Can Almost Touch It”
Image
Metallica is pushing a new level of immersion for their live show experience, releasing a concert experience through Apple Vision Pro this week that gets fans about as close to the band as possible, including standing on stage while the band performs.

Officially released for Apple Vision Pro users on Friday, the show takes high-tech footage Apple had compiled during the Mexico City stop for the band’s M72 tour last year, placing viewers everywhere from directly in the crowd, to above the stage and to right behind Lars Ulrich’s drum kit, close enough to see even the most minute bits of dirt catching on the high hats.

Metallica bass player Robert Trujillo surprised a couple of fans who demoed the show Friday at the Apple Store at The Grove in Los Angeles, unaware he was sitting beside them as they watched the show through the headsets, only to...

Image
Noah Weiland, son of late Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, has unveiled a cover and music video of the Stp classic “Sex Type Thing” in honor of his late father.

“Filmed this about a dream I had long ago about seeing my father again. It’s hard for me to stay in the moment sometimes, but I try,” wrote Noah on Instagram.

The cover is a stripped-down version of the song, which served as Stp’s first-ever single off their debut album, Core. It features Noah’s vocals over an acoustic guitar, played by Spencer Carr Reed.

The music video depicts Noah out and about with a Chucky doll, which is representative of Scott in Noah’s aforementioned dream. Along with the visuals of Noah and the doll, there are captions that explain the dream and how it relates to Scott: “There was so much I wanted to tell him,...

Inside Clive Davis’ Milestone Pre-Grammys Event With Legends (Joni Mitchell), Chart-Toppers (Shaboozey) and A-Listers (Jennifer Lopez)
Image
Clive Davis once again filled the Beverly Hilton’s international ballroom to the brim with music industry insiders as he presented his pre-Grammy celebration and concert. As always, Saturday night’s show featured a unique mix at the microphone of legends (Joni Mitchell, Barry Manilow), rising stars (Shaboozey, Benson Boone and Teddy Swims) and rock royalty (members of Black Crowes, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica).

But this year’s starry event had a new moniker on the program, billed as an “event” rather than a “gala,” due to the catastrophic Los Angeles blazes that ripped through the city last month. While the wildfires forced a pivot — the typically glamorous affair got scaled back a bit by nixing the red carpet and its crush of press and photographers — and introduced a focus on fundraising via MusiCares, music, as always, remained the start of the show. Saturday night delivered a parade...

The alt-pop song is the latest single from Noah, who first emerged as a musician in the rock band Suspect208 alongside London Hudson (son of Guns N’ Roses’ Slash) and Tye Trujillo (son of Metallica’s Robert Trujillo). After being let go from Suspect208 (who broke up shortly thereafter), Noah has released a handful of solo singles, including “Good Riddance & Goodbye” and “Yesterday.”

“2 Nights” is accompanied by a lo-fi music video, which features Noah singing the song in different outdoor locations along with retro-looking computer graphics.

The song previews Noah’s debut full-length album, Call Jesus, which is set to arrive sometime in 2025. Previously, the singer released the EP Last Kiss Before Detox.

Ozzy Osbourne Inducted Into Rock Hall by Electrifying Jack Black Speech and All-Star Performance

Ozzy Osbourne was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday night (October 19th) in Cleveland with a rousing and highly entertaining speech by Jack Black. The Prince of Darkness was also honored with a three-song performance fronted by Maynard James Keenan, Jelly Roll, and Billy Idol.

Jack Black gave an all-time Rock Hall speech, with his face turning beet red as he hilariously screamed his way through a highly animated rundown of Ozzy’s various achievements.

Ozzy himself followed, sitting in a giant leather bat-design chair. The metal icon singled out his late guitarist Randy Rhoads and his wife Sharon during his brief speech.

The all-star performance was next, as Tool’s Maynard James Keenan sang “Crazy Train” alongside Wolfgang Van Halen on lead guitar, with a backing band of Chad Smith on drums, Robert Trujillo on bass, Andrew Watt on rhythm guitar, and Adam Wakeman on keyboards.

“I Want Blood” follows the singles “Vilified” and “Afterglow,” and serves as the final preview of the album before its October 18th release.

The song is one of three tracks on the album that McKagan plays bass on and one of two songs on which Bordin handles drums. Other musicians who contributed to I Want Blood include Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Greg Puciato, Gil Sharone, and Lola Colette.

Of the three singles released thus far, “I Want Blood” sounds the least like Alice in Chains. In fact, it has more of a Queens of the Stone Age vibe. However, Cantrell’s distinct voice and guitar playing are still instantly recognizable.

“There’s a confidence to this album,...

Jerry Cantrell has unleashed “Afterglow” as the second single from his upcoming album, I Want Blood. The song is accompanied by a music video created by Cantrell and visual artist Matt Mahurin, who directed Alice in Chains’ “No Excuses” and “Angry Chair” videos in the 1990s.

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo Cover Ministry’s “Just One Fix” During Chicago Show: Watch
Image
During Metallica’s concert at Chicago’s Soldier Field on Sunday (August 11th), guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo covered Ministry’s “Just One Fix.”

The performance was one of the duo’s recurring “doodles,” a tradition Trujillo and Hammett picked up in recent years of playing a stripped-down cover celebrating a hometown artist, sometimes with Trujillo on vocals. Industrial pioneers Ministry formed in Chicago back in 1981.

“Kirk and I like to jam and we like to celebrate new ideas, straight from the dressing room here sometimes,” Trujillo told the crowd Sunday night. “And sometimes we like to celebrate bands or artists from the city. And tonight we’ve got a band that’s very special, an artist that we consider groundbreaking and who’s a huge influence to us. If any of you are into the band Ministry, let’s get it together. And if you know the words,...

Going back to Metallica’s first show in 1982, Diamond Head’s eight-minute New Wave of British Heavy Metal crusher “Am I Evil?” has been a staple of their set lists. They’ve teamed up with members of the band a few times over the years to perform it live, and the planets aligned again on Wednesday when Metallica stopped through Oslo for the Tons of Rock festival. Diamond Head guitarist Brian Tatler joined the group onstage to perform the song he co-wrote in the late Seventies.

Apocalyptica Unveil Cover of Metallica’s “The Call of Ktulu” Featuring Cliff Burton’s Original Bassline: Stream
Image
Apocalyptica have unveiled a new cover of the Metallica‘s “The Call of Ktulu,” and the recording features the original bassline by the late Cliff Burton.

The Finnish metal cellists got the blessing of both the Metallica camp and Burton’s estate for the use of the bass part, which provides the backbone for this gorgeous rendition of the Ride the Lightning epic.

Burton’s playing is even more discernible here than on the original, as it’s mixed pretty hot against the strings and not buried beneath guitars and drums. Later in the track, Apocalyptica do bring in more typical metal instrumentation, but you can really hear all the nuances of Cliff’s playing when the strings are soloed in the mix.

“I’ve learned in life that if you have crazy ideas it’s always worth asking, so I called Lars!” said Apocalyptica founder...

Ex-Slipknot Drummer Jay Weinberg Joins Suicidal Tendencies
Image
Drummer Jay Weinberg, who was let go from Slipknot late last year, has become a member of veteran crossover-thrash band Suicidal Tendencies. He will begin playing shows with them next week.

It was previously announced that Weinberg would be drumming with the reunited Infectious Grooves, featuring Suicidal Tendencies singer Mike Muir and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo. Now, he’s joined Muir’s main band, which previously featured Greyson Nekrutman, Brandon Pertzborn, and the legendary Dave Lombardo among its recent drummers.

In an Instagram post captioned “You Can’t Bring Me Down” (a Suicidal Tendencies song), Weinberg wrote the following about joining Suicidal Tendencies:

“When I think of the culture and community of heavy music that I’ve loved and considered my creative home for 20 years, I think of Suicidal Tendencies: a foundational pillar and source of inspiration ever since I fell in love with punk, metal, and hardcore. Having toured...

Metallica Win Best Metal Performance at 2024 Grammy Awards
Image
Metallica won Best Metal Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 4th) for their song “72 Seasons,” the title track to their 2023 album. The trophy was handed out during the streaming “Premiere Ceremony,” with bassist Robert Trujillo accepting on the band’s behalf.

With boyngeius and Paramore dominating the other rock categories, Metallica were the only heavy act to win a Grammy this year. The legendary metal act beat out Disturbed, Ghost, Slipknot, and Spiritbox for the honor. Overall, Metallica have now won nine Grammy awards, the most by any metal band.

“I just want to say that Lars, James, and Kirk could not be here because they’re with their families, and families are everything to all of us,” began Trujillo during his acceptance speech. “I live in Southern California, so it’s a little easier.”

He added, “We want to thank Greg Fidelman, our incredible producer, and our recording team.

Scott Weiland’s Son Noah: “I’m Not a Trust Fund Baby… My Dad Was Millions in Debt”
Image
Noah Weiland, the son of the late Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland, opened up about his current living situation in a new interview, insisting that he isn’t a rich kid riding the coattails of his legendary father.

The aspiring singer cleared up a common misconception: “I’m not a trust fund baby or anything like that.”

“I always get annoyed when people say that type of stuff,” he told Rolling Stone. “My dad was millions in debt when he died. My mom has always worked a normal job. And truthfully, even if my dad’s estate ever does get out of debt, I don’t even want that money. I want to make a career out of myself as much as possible.”

Heavy Consequence has covered Noah’s solo music, a pop/hip-hop hybrid that’s self-described as a “gritty alternative” take on Justin Bieber, as heard on his recent single “Yesterday.

Scott Weiland’s Son Is Making ‘Gritty Alternative Pop’ and Finally Forgiving His Father

If you look at Noah Weiland’s life from a certain vantage point, he’s the definition of a nepo baby. The 23-year-old is the son of Scott Weiland — the tragic former lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver — and spent his childhood years traveling the world on Velvet Revolver tours, flying on private jets, and staying in luxury hotels. He’s an unsigned artist that just started making his own music a few years ago, but he’s already generated worldwide press and tens of thousands of views for his YouTube videos,...

Krist Novoselic Teaches Geddy Lee How to Can Tomatoes in Exclusive Clip from Paramount+ Docu-Series: Watch
Image
The new docu-series Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bass Players Human Too? premieres today (December 5th) on Paramount+, and Consequence is offering an exclusive clip from the episode featuring the Rush frontman and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic.

The four-part series follows Geddy Lee as he partakes in random tasks and endeavors with fellow bass players. Most of the activities are decidedly non-musical, as we discovered in our previous exclusive clip in which Les Claypool shows Geddy how to use an excavator.

On the other hand, the episode with Novoselic is a bit more domestic, as Geddy finds himself in the Nirvana bassist’s kitchen among many homegrown vegetables (Novoselic would appear to be quite the gardener).

After donning an apron, Geddy gets right to work on a can of roasted tomatoes.

“You’re a natural,” exclaims Krist off the jump before placing the jar in bowling water to sterilize it.

“High drama,...

Scott Weiland’s Son Noah Weiland Unveils New Single “Yesterday”: Stream
Image
Noah Weiland, the 23-year-old son of late Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, has released a new solo single called “Yesterday.”

It was three years ago when Weiland emerged with Suspect208, a young rock band also featuring London Hudson (son of Guns N’ Roses’ Slash) and Tye Trujillo (son of Metallica’s Robert Trujillo). Despite a couple of promising singles, Noah was kicked out of Suspect208 due to alleged drug use, and replaced with a new singer before the band eventually broke up entirely.

Noah then formed a group called Blu Weekend with Tye, but that appeared to be short-lived. Last year, Noah returned with a solo EP that leaned more pop than the music he released with Suspect208. And at the beginning of this year, he released the single “Good Riddance & Goodbye.”

Now, he’s back with the alt-pop song “Yesterday,” along with an accompanying music video in which...

Les Claypool Shows Geddy Lee How to Use an Excavator in Exclusive Clip from Paramount+ Docu-Series: Watch
Image
With the new Paramount+ docu-series Geddy Lee: Are Bass Players Human Too? set to launch on Tuesday (December 5th), Consequence is exclusively premiering a clip from the episode featuring the Rush legend alongside Les Claypool of Primus.

The four-part series features Geddy Lee engaging in random activities with fellow bassists in an effort to “show the world that a bass player can do many things,” in his own words.

For example, this exclusive clip sees Claypool showing Geddy how to use an excavator to consolidate some burn piles on Claypool’s land. At first, Geddy looks confounded by the heavy equipment.

“I’m a nice urban Jewish boy… where do I come to this kind of machinery?” asks Geddy.

Les responds by giving Geddy a Stetson and some coveralls while encouraging him to expand his horizons. Soon enough, Geddy gets the excavator arm moving and gets to work, picking up the basics fast.
