Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, has discussed some concerns about fan backlash. The veteran animator admitted that his reimagining of the classic franchise might alienate longtime devotees of the iconic Gundam franchise.

"It is quite a bold idea and some traditional, older fans who like the first Gundam might think we're lacking respect," Tsurumaki stated during a recent Cbr roundtable interview, adding, "[but] even these kinds of fans are finding this exciting and interesting, so we are very happy." Tsurumaki approached the project from dual perspectives: as a professional director and lifelong fan. "I've always been a fan of Gundam and this is one of the reasons I became an animator in the first place," he explained during the interview. "Other than thinking about the fans and what they'd appreciate about the designs, I myself am a Gundam fan, so I designed Gunpla that I would like to have!

The Gundam community has seen its fair share of odd series titles, but perhaps none quite as chaotic as Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. The vowel-heavy name has already sparked confusion across message boards and subreddits, but fans hoping for a deeper meaning may be overthinking it.

According to director Kazuya Tsurumaki, the title was improvised -- and intentionally offbeat. "Actually, this title was decided right before release, so it was a rushed decision," Tsurumaki revealed in a recent roundtable interview with Cbr. "We don't just want a cool name or another 'mecha name.' We wanted to be something very unique within the Gundam series and, as a result of that, we happened to come up with six 'u's."

Pioneering Beijing-based distributor Road Pictures has snapped up China theatrical rights to the hit Japanese anime feature Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning. Via a press release, the upcoming show is set to stream on Amazon's Prime Video simultaneously in Japan and 240 other countries worldwide, with the premiere set for Tuesday, April 8, 2025. Evangelion fans are in for an aromatic treat with a new perfume collection inspired by the characters of the Rebuild of Evangelion anime tetralogy.

The Evangelion franchise received the new perfume release from Primaniacs, inspired by the five mecha pilots Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, Asuka Shikinami Langley, Kaworu Nagisa, and Mari Illustrious Makinami. Reservations are currently open on its online shop ahead of its release at Primaniac's main store in Ginza on April 18 and general sale on April 24. The characters' appearances were described as "sexually emphasized" by Tokyo Shimbun. They reportedly made around 10 million yen (~US$64k) between October 2023 and March 2024; they admitted to selling the content when questioned by police, stating, "It was to supplement our living expenses."

The theatrical preview version of the latest Mobile Suit Gundam anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, has claimed the top spot at the Japanese box office in its opening weekend.

Released on Jan 17, the film grossed 599 million yen and drew 352,500 attendees over its first three days, according to Kogyo Tsushin’s weekend attendance rankings.
