Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX wrapped up its 12-episode run on June 24, 2025, but it wasn't necessarily the series finale that broke the hearts of its fans, but rather its goodbye message afterward.
Despite critical acclaim and commercial success, official statements from both director Kazuya Tsurumaki and Studio Khara president Hideaki Anno suggest that the ambitious new Gundam series won't be returning for a Season 2. The writing appeared to be on the wall when Tsurumaki posted a farewell message on the series' official X (formerly Twitter) account. "Thank you for watching GQuuuuX until the very end," the director wrote, thanking fans for their feedback and noting how their support helped the team "somehow make it to the final episode."

The director behind the newest Mobile Suit Gundam anime is no stranger to the medium or the mecha genre, having been involved with one of the biggest mecha anime of all time. In fact, his own fandom for one of the bleakest entries in the franchise is said to influence the current iteration.

This included a Gundam Ova that's widely hailed as one of the best parts of the property. It's also one of the darkest, which could have major ramifications on the development of GQuuuuuuX.

Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, has discussed some concerns about fan backlash. The veteran animator admitted that his reimagining of the classic franchise might alienate longtime devotees of the iconic Gundam franchise.
"It is quite a bold idea and some traditional, older fans who like the first Gundam might think we're lacking respect," Tsurumaki stated during a recent Cbr roundtable interview, adding, "[but] even these kinds of fans are finding this exciting and interesting, so we are very happy." Tsurumaki approached the project from dual perspectives: as a professional director and lifelong fan. "I've always been a fan of Gundam and this is one of the reasons I became an animator in the first place," he explained during the interview. "Other than thinking about the fans and what they'd appreciate about the designs, I myself am a Gundam fan, so I designed Gunpla that I would like to have!

The Gundam community has seen its fair share of odd series titles, but perhaps none quite as chaotic as Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. The vowel-heavy name has already sparked confusion across message boards and subreddits, but fans hoping for a deeper meaning may be overthinking it.
According to director Kazuya Tsurumaki, the title was improvised -- and intentionally offbeat. "Actually, this title was decided right before release, so it was a rushed decision," Tsurumaki revealed in a recent roundtable interview with Cbr. "We don't just want a cool name or another 'mecha name.' We wanted to be something very unique within the Gundam series and, as a result of that, we happened to come up with six 'u's."

Despite directing plenty of anime and movies, Hideaki Anno’s biggest claim to fame is still Neon Genesis Evangelion. Even though it was released three decades ago, the series is still a cult classic, and its protagonist, Shinji, is one of the most relatable characters.
Shinji Ikari is somewhat similar to Anno himself. The character is unique among other anime heroes due to his flaws and vulnerabilities. He isn’t happy-go-lucky or brave or particularly courageous; he is more of an anomaly. But that is exactly why fans have been able to relate to him over the years.

Pioneering Beijing-based distributor Road Pictures has snapped up China theatrical rights to the hit Japanese anime feature Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning. The company plans to release the film in China sometime in April. The news was released Tuesday at Hong Kong’s Filmart content market.
Among anime fandom, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning is an exciting creative hybrid. It’s the first major collaboration between Japan’s studio Khara, the anime banner behind the cult Evangelion series, and Sunrise, the historic studio home of the Mobile Suit Gundam animated works. The film was released in Japan in January and has earned over $25 million. Gkids gave it a limited release in North American theaters on Feb. 28, bringing in $1.2 million.
Road Pictures has carved out a powerful niche in China’s theatrical market as the go-to distributor of Japanese anime, a category that’s begun to out-perform many of Hollywood’s biggest releases in the country.

Currently still going strong at 45 years of existence, the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has had numerous iterations and entries over the last four and a half decades. The latest of these is the recently revealed and oddly named Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuuX, which is actually being written by a mecha anime legend. This gives the new series a lot of potential to experiment and do something new, striking the perfect balance between the familiar and the original.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuuX seemingly has plot elements that are both divergent and recognizable for the franchise, which could help it continue to build the brand's fanbase in the 2020s. In doing so, it can succeed where a previous series stumbled, namely by focusing on what separates it from other shows in the franchise. All the while, another Mobile Suit Gundam timeline can be used to tell stories that are a bit more traditional.

The next entry in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is coming soon, with a major name in the mecha anime genre involved with the upcoming movie and series. Despite this, the legendary creator isn't quite as prominent in the anime's development as some might expect.
Hideaki Anno is best known among anime fans for creating the popular Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Now, he's part of the creative team for the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuux, but the show is actually someone else's proverbial "baby." Nevertheless, the series will be a collaboration that will likely come naturally to those involved, given their history.
