‘The Critic’ Review: Ian McKellen Balances Desperation and Laughs in This Splendid Mix of Bitchy Mirth and Melodrama
Image
Imagine an acerbic love child miraculously spawned by Addison DeWitt of “All About Eve” and Waldo Lydecker of “Laura,” with John Simon serving as midwife, and you will be prepared for Jimmy Erskine, the viciously witty and mercilessly demanding title character played with utterly delicious flamboyance by Ian McKellen in “The Critic.” Directed by Anand Tucker (“Shopgirl”) and written by Patrick Marber (“Notes on a Scandal”), the film is a heady brew of period thriller, compelling melodrama and jet-black comedy, and the second most remarkable thing about it is how seamlessly these diverse elements gel.

Even more remarkable, however, is McKellen’s multifaceted portrayal of the man aptly known as “The Monster,” both behind his back and to his face, in the film’s world of 1930s London theater.

Erskine takes unseemly delight in savagely shredding the productions (and performances) he finds lacking, and the physical appearances of actors he deems unattractive.

‘The Critic’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Is Nina Dead?
Image
Anand Tucker’s The Critic is a crime drama that shifts gears a little too soon. Jimmy Erskine, played by Ian McKellen, was known for his blatant savage commentary, and while some relished his harsh criticism, thespians dreaded him. The first half dealt with Erskine’s self-obsession and compulsive need to feel powerful and validated, but it soon escalated into something a little too dark for the premise to handle. Jimmy Erskine felt threatened after the new editor-in-chief, Viscount Brooke, warned him to tone down his criticism. This was perhaps the first time anyone had dared to question Erskine’s style, and he did not know how to react to it. He refused to live in constant fear of losing his job, and at the same time, he was hellbent on sticking to his style. It was the 1930s, and homosexuality was considered a crime. One night, Erskine was drunk...

Explore the origins of Captain Nemo in the new trailer for the Jules Verne-inspired Nautilus
Image
Last year, a Jules Verne-inspired sea adventure series that explores the origins of Captain Nemo was canceled by Disney+. The show, Nautilus, then found a new home at AMC. It will also stream on Prime in the UK and Ireland and on Stan in Australia. Nautilus had already finished shooting when Disney dropped the series as a cost-cutting measure. As stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” Nautilus has now unleashed a new trailer courtesy of Prime Video, by way of Deadline.

“I had every right to complain”: Sir Ian McKellen Believes Actors Should Fight a Bad Critic Review if They Feel They Don’t Deserve it
Image
Sir Ian McKellen ain’t one to take a bad review lying down, especially if he knows it’s completely off the mark. After all, being a knight of the realm and a legend on stage and screen doesn’t mean you have to quietly nod along when a critic tears into your performance. McKellen firmly believes that actors have every right to push back if a review feels unfair or unearned.

With decades of acting prowess under his belt, he knows when a critique is off-target. For him, standing up against a bad review isn’t about vanity—it’s about defending the craft. McKellen’s stance? Sometimes, critics need to be reminded that even they aren’t beyond reproach.

Gemma Arterton and Ian McKellen in The Critic

Director Anand Tucker and screenwriter Patrick Marber's 1930s period drama The Critic, sees Sir Ian McKellen step into the shoes of Jimmy Erskine, the chief theatre critic of the Daily Chronicle newspaper. The most feared critic of his time, he seeks to entertain his readers with scathingly witty takedowns of any actor or production that fails to meet his standards.

After the death of his father, David Brooke (Mark Strong) takes over the Chronicle. He and Erskine immediately clash as he tries to make it a family-friendly newspaper. He lets go of some of the old guard writers, and makes a simple request of Erskine: "Be kinder." The veteran critic can't abide it and, after being arrested for homosexual transgressions, he loses his job. In order to take back power from Brooke, he makes a deal with actress Nina Land (Gemma...

The Critic Review: Ian McKellen Stuns In A Weak Drama That Doesn't Live Up To His Talents
Image
As a critic preparing to write about The Critic, I feel somewhat intimidated. The eponymous writer at the center of Anand Tucker's period drama, Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellen), uses his words as weapons against the actors and directors who dare present him with a horrible performance. He's brutal, and takes pleasure in each cutting word he has his loyal secretary Tom (Alfred Enoch) type up. I couldn't be further from Jimmy, which is why it disappoints me to have to write that The Critic was far less fun than I had hoped it would be.

The Critic review – Ian McKellen’s poison pen sharpens 30s society cosy-crime drama
Ian McKellen at an event for The Prisoner (2009)
As a jaundiced reviewer with a dangerous private life, McKellen brings glorious life to this story of sour toffs in a dishonest decade

Channelling something of his big-screen Richard III from almost 30 years ago, Ian McKellen now portrays an ageing chancer with reptilian contempt for every single person he comes across. And incidentally, no one keeps an unfiltered cigarette in the corner of his mouth with more style than McKellen. His character is a critic, and therefore arrogant, spiteful, bad mannered and unpleasant – and who moreover abandons his much-vaunted integrity and objectivity when it suits him, to salvage his career.

Screenwriter Patrick Marber freely adapts the page-turning bestseller Curtain Call by author and critic Anthony Quinn and Anand Tucker directs. McKellen plays Jimmy Erskine, a cantankerous and much feared theatre critic in 1930s London whose open-secret nocturnal encounters in public parks with young men are beginning to discomfit his proprietor...

The Critic - Jennie Kermode - 19279
Gemma Arterton at an event for Gemma Bovery (2014)
There has always been a certain proportion of people whose primary interest in going to the theatre – or the cinema – is simply to gaze at somebody beautiful, regardless of the quality of that individual’s performances. It is due to the adulation of such people that Nina (Gemma Arterton) has found herself a place on the London stage. Even before Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellen), the critic of the title, has delivered his withering appraisal of her work, it is difficult to believe that anyone ever perceived her as talented. Yet there is talent in there, Erskine assures her, in one of his more pitying or solicitous moments. She simply has to learn how to access it. She needs to learn how to be subtle.

One wishes that somebody had given that advice to writer Patrick Marber and director Anand Tucker.

With exquisite production design and cinematography, as well as a capable.

‘The Critic’ Review: Ian McKellen Is Brilliantly Acerbic in Anand Tucker’s Flimsy Thriller
Image
Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellen) has never minced words in his decades-spanning career as the poison-quilled theater critic for London’s Daily Chronicle. When a maligned actress, Nina Land (Gemma Arterton), confronts her nemesis in the street, demanding to know whether she’s really as “appalling” on stage as he’s alleged in print, he responds, with a half-apologetic look of disgust as he recalls her past performances, “I’m afraid so.” Could she have expected mercy? This is, after all, the man who wrote of her on-stage death scene that “when Miss Land finally, blessedly, expires, her death is akin to a deflated dirigible.”

So, let’s take a tip from Jimmy and speak plainly: Despite its perfect grenades of one-liner takedowns, Anand Tucker’s The Critic is nothing short of a mess. It’s only the winking malice of Sir Ian’s title character that prevents it from imploding entirely,...

The Critic Review – An Excellent McKellan Cannot Lift A Middling Thriller
Image
The career of Ian McKellan has often been filtered through his fantastical performances. The stage legend rose to incredible heights in British films until his roles in The Lord of the Rings and X-Men made him a household name. The Critic looks to cash in on some of the goodwill of McKellan’s earlier performances. In the same vein as Mr. Holmes and Gods & Monsters, McKellan once again shines as a man wrestling with age. Unfortunately, The Critic proves exceptionally thin outside of his performance.

The Critic – The Plot

Set in 1934 London, theater critic Jimmy Erskine (McKellan) feels unstoppable. However, when the ownership of the paper turns to David Brooke (Mark Strong), for the first time in years Erskine could be out of a job. His writing conflicts with the owner’s personal feelings towards actress Nina Land (Gemma Arterton). Additionally, Erskine’s status as a gay man in 1930s...

The Critic Review
Image
Directed by Anand Tucker and written by Patrick Marber, The Critic is a period thriller film adapted from Anthony Quinn’s 2015 novel Curtain Call. The film features an outstanding cast, including legendary stage and screen actor Ian McKellen as the notorious theatre critic Jimmy Erskine, while Gemma Arterton stars as the beleaguered actress Nina Land. Mark Strong is David Brooke, the son of a newspaper proprietor while Lesley Manville portrays Nina’s mother, Annabel Land.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year. Following its initial screenings, the film underwent some reshoots and tweaks after festival audiences found the original cut too dark in tone, leading to a slightly lighter version being released.

The film is set in the cutthroat world of 1930s London theatre, where Jimmy Erskine reigns supreme as the most feared and respected critic. His acerbic reviews are known to make or break careers,...

‘The Critic’ Trailer: Ian McKellen Eviscerates the West End’s Theatre Crowd in Journalism Drama
Image
Sir Ian McKellen is now the most feared drama critic on the West End thanks to his turn in “The Critic.”

McKellen leads the adaptation of Anthony Quinn’s 2015 novel “Curtain Call,” which centers on an aging — but iconic — journalist who teams up with an actress (Gemma Arterton) to exact revenge on his newspaper’s new owner (Mark Strong). The film is set in 1934 London.

“The Critic” is written by Academy Award nominee Patrick Marber and is directed by Anand Tucker (“Hilary and Jackie,” “Shopgirl”).

The official synopsis reads: “Jimmy Erskine (McKellen) is the most feared theatre critic of the age. He lives as flamboyantly as he writes and takes pleasure in savagely taking down any actor who fails to meet his standards. When the owner of the Daily Chronicle newspaper dies, and his son David Brooke (Strong) takes over, Jimmy quickly finds himself at odds with his new boss and his position under threat.

“Watch your backs…” Ian McKellen & Gemma Arterton star in trailer for ‘The Critic’

True Brit Entertainment has debuted the trailer for the British film ‘The Critic’

Based on Anthony Quinn’s novel Curtain Call, the movie tells the story of Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellen), the most feared and famous theatre critic in 1930s London, saving his most savage takedowns for Nina Land (Gemma Arterton), an already unsure leading lady.

AMC Nabs ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ Reimagining From Disney
Image
A retelling of the story of Captain Nemo is on the move — and not just under the ocean.

AMC Networks has grabbed linear and streaming rights to Nautilus — a reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea — in the United States and Canada. The series, which hails from British companies Moonriver TV and All3Media-owned Seven Stories, was initially set for Disney+, which picked it up to series in August 2021. After scrapping the show earlier this year as part of a content write-down, however, Disney Entertainment has licensed Nautilus to AMC and its sibling streamer AMC+, which plan to air the series in 2024.

“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

AMC Picks Up Captain Nemo Origin Series ‘Nautilus’ From Disney, Plans to Air Show in 2024
Image
The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.

The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.

AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

Captain Nemo Series ‘Nautilus’ Docks At AMC After Disney+ UK Exit
Image
Nautilus, the ten-part series inspired by Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has found a new home.

The series has landed at AMC, where it will air in 2024 as well as on AMC+. The move comes after the Disney+ UK commission was axed by the streamer earlier this summer as part of its content removal plan.

Nautilus tells the origin story of Captain Nemo: an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

It is the latest series axed by Disney as part of its move to cut streaming costs – the Mouse House is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion – to find a new home. The Spiderwick Chronicles, which was similarly canceled at Disney+, found a spot on Roku.

The series was shot in Australia,...

Joseph L. Mankiewicz
TIFF Review: The Critic is an Improbable, Grim Farce Enlivened by Ian McKellen
Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s All About Eve has ably demonstrated that a catty feud between theater critics and actresses is crackling subject matter for witty, adult entertainment. Anand Tucker’s The Critic follows a similar premise and, auspiciously, recruited playwright Patrick Marber––a well-known luminary of the British theater scene––to pen a script packed with sharp, acerbic dialog. This, still, is not half-enough. In its quest to surprise audiences, The Critic jumps down too many rabbit holes, progressively losing all semblance of plausibility or insight it might’ve otherwise yielded.

The film is being billed as an adaptation of Anthony Quinn’s well-regarded novel Curtain Call, though one glance at the book summary indicates that significant liberties have been taken––notably, a murder-mystery strand has been entirely jettisoned. What we have instead is an interpersonal drama between several personalities either directly or tangentially related to the theater. Chief among...

The Critic Review | Sir Ian McKellen's Most Despicable Character Yet [TIFF 2023]
Image
The world of 1936 London theater takes center stage in The Critic, director Anand Tucker's latest movie that made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, in fact, marks Tucker's return to feature work in over a decade, the last being 2010's Leap Year. The two couldn't be more different: where Leap Year was a romantic comedy that offered hope and tugged at the heartstrings, tying everything with a Hollywood happy ending, The Critic takes us to the darker corners of desire and ambition, spinning a tale of deceit and greed.

Penned by the brilliant English playwright Patrick Marber, The Critic stars Sir Ian McKellen as the eponymous theater critic for The Daily Chronicle, Jimmy Erskine. When we meet Jimmy, the Chronicle has just undergone a change in management, with David Brooke (Mark Strong) taking over after his father's passing. David's plan to steer the renowned...

‘The Critic’ Review: A Ferocious Ian McKellen Is Let Down by a Script Favoring Histrionics Over Depth
Image
The critic of The Critic is the type who might occasionally exist in real life, but seems to loom far larger in fictional tales by artists who evidently have little love for the profession. As played by Ian McKellen, Jimmy Erskine is an erudite brute. Whatever love he once held for the theater is less apparent these days than the savage delight he takes in ripping performers and productions to shreds, and the satisfaction he takes in the status and influence afforded him by his job.

The Critic, directed by Anand Tucker, is the story of how far he’ll go when that position is threatened. Given that the film is scripted by Patrick Marber (of Closer and Notes on a Scandal), it’s little surprise he’ll go very far indeed. And given that he’s performed by McKellen, it’s safe to bet on a ferocious lead turn.

‘The Critic’ Review: Ian McKellen Casts A Deadly Love Triangle In This Overstuffed Thriller [TIFF]
Image
Toronto – About 20 minutes into “The Critic” it may occur to anyone paying attention that screenwriter and noted playwright and screenwriter Patrick Farber might not be a fan of the profession that is at the center of his new film. Then again, maybe we’re just taking it a bit personally. Maybe every character in the Anand Tucker-directed thriller is as selfish and professionally corrupt as the film’s protagonist Jimmy Erskine, a 1930s newspaper critic often portrayed with devilish glee by none other than Ian McKellen.

Ian McKellen, Lesley Manville, Mark Strong, and Gemma Arterton in The Critic (2023)
‘The Critic’ Review: Ian McKellen Makes a Nasty Reviewer Despicable and Entertaining
Ian McKellen, Lesley Manville, Mark Strong, and Gemma Arterton in The Critic (2023)
If you want to give a great actor a role he can sink his teeth into with almost unseemly glee, there can’t be many better ways than to cast him as a critic in a period melodrama. That, at least, seems to be the idea behind “The Critic,” Anand Tucker’s tale of a nefarious theater reviewer in 1930s London starring Ian McKellen as the kind of awful person who must have been a lot of fun to play.

It is not, perhaps, a role that would challenge the magnificent McKellen much, but who needs a challenge when you can spit out viciously witty bon mots while wearing fancy duds and being lit at all times for maximum dramatic effect? And while McKellen’s Jimmy Erskine is a villain to remember, he isn’t a one-dimensional baddie. He’s a proudly gay man who can be arrested for who...

‘The Critic’ Review: Ian McKellen Underused In Potentially Juicy Tale That Lacks Urgency And Spice – Toronto Film Festival
Image
This critic might want to look for a different job.

The prospect of seeing the great Ian McKellen take on the role of one of London’s most august theater critics of the 1930s must have looked tantalizing on paper, but sadly this is a show that deserved to close out of town. Despite a colorful central character who could have knowledgeably and amusingly navigated a cruise through the dynamic theatrical scene close to a century ago, The Critic unaccountably shifts its focus away from McKellen’s Jimmy Erskin, who entertainingly dominates the film at the start, and onto a group of characters who are almost entirely uninteresting; there’s not even much juicy inside stuff about the legit theater at an exciting time for it. Given the setting, period and endless possibilities of the material, this is a major disappointment, a drag of the first order.
