Image
Terry Louise Fisher, the former Los Angeles assistant district attorney who put her legal expertise to work when she teamed with Steven Bochco to create the acclaimed NBC drama L.A. Law, has died. She was 79.

Fisher lived in the Laguna Beach area and died Tuesday, family member Mark Zev Hochberg wrote on Facebook.

L.A. Law, revolving around the fictional law firm McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney and Kuzak, ran eight seasons from 1986-94 and collected 15 Emmys, including four for outstanding drama series.

‘Succession’ siblings Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook set to land Golden Globe category promotions
Image
After both making good on their recent efforts to become first-time lead acting Emmy contenders, formerly supporting “Succession” cast mates Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook are naturally expected to be similarly bumped up on the next Golden Globes ballot. If they do achieve their first Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Drama Actress notices this winter, the on-screen siblings will join a group of 10 other Golden Globe nominees who succeeded in rebranding their initially supporting characters as lead ones. As it stands, said club has not welcomed a new member – regardless of genre or gender – in two full decades.

Culkin’s Golden Globes resume currently includes three fruitless featured bids for “Succession,” on which he was bested by Ben Whishaw, Stellan Skarsgård and O Yeong-su. Although Snook only has a 2022 supporting nomination for the HBO series to her name, she actually prevailed, even against awards magnet Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus...

2023 Emmy Nominations: Best Drama Actor
Image
With reigning champ Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) out of contention, this year’s Best Drama Actor Emmy could feasibly go to any one of the six men currently vying for it. One might expect Jeremy Strong to pull off a second win for HBO’s “Succession” after triumphing in 2020, but, according to Gold Derby’s odds, he is running second in the race behind his TV brother, Kieran Culkin. Scroll through our photo gallery to learn more about all six Best Drama Actor nominees and be sure to make your predictions for the 75th Emmys by September 18.

Culkin is new to this category but did receive supporting nominations for “Succession” in 2020 and 2022. Kieran Culkin (‘Succession’) poised to make Emmys history
Image
As soon as the third episode of the current season of “Succession” aired, viewers began speculating about whether certain previously Emmy-nominated cast members would change categories based on their characters’ new levels of prominence. The first to switch was Kieran Culkin, who is officially seeking his first lead notice for playing Roman Roy after competing twice as a featured player. If he does land in the Best Drama Actor lineup, he will be only the sixth man in Emmys history to have reaped lead and supporting bids for a single role on a single series.

Culkin has appeared as a regular on all four seasons of “Succession” and achieved TV academy recognition in both 2020 and 2022. He was respectively bested in those supporting contests by Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) and his own “Succession” cast mate, Matthew Macfadyen. Among his strongest challengers in this year’s lead race are his on-screen brother and father,...

Oscars: Will Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’ win Best Song for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ like ‘Take My Breath Away’ did for film’s predecessor? [Watch]
Image
Lady Gaga is back in the Oscar race for “Hold My Hand,” a power ballad featured on the year’s biggest blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.” In addition to performing the track, the versatile entertainer co-wrote it with Michael Tucker, professionally known as BloodPop. An Academy Award nomination for Best Song would mark Gaga’s fourth bid. She was nominated in this category in 2016 for “Til’ It Happens to You” with Diane Warren (“The Hunting Ground”). Three years later she won the statuette for her song “Shallow” from “A Star is Born,” sharing the prize with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. The singer earned an additional Best Actress bid that year for her starring role opposite Bradley Cooper.

Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas Among Oscar Hopefuls for Best Original Song
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The nominees for the Oscar for best original song could make for a star-studded category, as several of the leading contenders — representing films like Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Sony’s Devotion, Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick and Pixar’s Turning Red, among others — were written and performed by some of our leading pop stars.

From new songs from Oscar winners Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish and Finneas to the long-awaited new track from Rihanna, these original compositions will aim to land on the category’s short list (which is announced Dec. 21) before making it to the home stretch when the nominations are announced next January.

Rihanna – “Lift Me Up”

The singer (and fashion mogul) returned from a years-long hiatus from music with this ballad for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, co-written with the film’s composer, Ludwig Göransson, writer-director Ryan Coogler and Nigerian singer Tems.

CNN Originals Hub Launches on Discovery+ with Over 800 TV Episodes

Starting today, Discovery+ subscribers will have access to many of CNN’s most popular evergreen television series, including popular food shows “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” and “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and documentaries like “The History of Comedy” and “Diana.” The series can be found under a new CNN Originals hub on Discovery+, the latest addition to the popular documentary-heavy streaming service.

Since WarnerMedia and Discovery merged to become Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year, CEO David Zaslav has made the consolidation of the conglomerate’s streaming services a top priority. One of his first moves was to scrap CNN+, a streaming service that the company had invested over 100 million into, just a month after it launched. CNN+ primarily focused on content made by CNN personalities that was not strictly news-related. Hollywood Flashback: ‘L.A. Law’ Set the Bar at the Emmys
Image
Click here to read the full article.

“A storybook tale of corporate law offices in the City of Angels” is how The Hollywood Reporter described Steven Bochco’s new NBC drama series, L.A. Law, in October 1986.

The show, which centered on the lives of the partners, associates and staff of a fictional Los Angeles law firm, was co-created by Bochco and Terry Louise Fisher, a former L.A. County prosecutor who had served as a writer and producer on Cagney & Lacey. Bochco had already created a hit for NBC in Hill Street Blues, which won four consecutive drama series Emmys, and his success would continue with L.A. Law. In 1987, the show took home five Emmys for its debut season, including outstanding drama series. L.A. Law‘s ensemble cast — featuring Richard Dysart, Corbin Bernsen, Susan Dey, Harry Hamlin, Jimmy Smits, Jill Eikenberry, Larry Drake, Michael Tucker and Blair Underwood, among others — also garnered Emmy nominations,...

“Trump Is No Hitler, But…”: ‘The Meaning Of Hitler’ Directors On Parallels Between The Führer And 45
Image
It’s purely coincidental, but the new documentary The Meaning of Hitler was released in theaters and on-demand platforms Friday, the very day some Trump supporters (like the My Pillow guy) insisted their preferred president would magically re-take power. They woke up today to find Joe Biden still occupying the White House.

The film written, directed and produced by Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker, based partly on the 1978 book of the same name by Sebastian Haffner, examines the enduring fascination with Hitler and Nazism, “set against the backdrop of the current rise of white supremacy, the normalization of antisemitism and the weaponization of history itself.”

Through judicious use of audio and video of Trump, the documentary also invites viewers to compare the Führer and the 45th American president, who arguably share personality traits and political tactics, if not precisely the same goals.

Michael Tucker in D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994)
Learn About 'The Meaning of Hitler' in Trailer for This Provocative Doc
Michael Tucker in D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994)
"An urgent warning." IFC Films has debuted the official US trailer for an acclaimed, provocative, and eye-opening documentary film titled The Meaning of Hitler, the latest doc from award-winning filmmakers Petra Epperlein & Michael Tucker. This premiered at the Doc NYC Film Festival last year, and is opening in theaters this August. And it's an important doc that is as relevant as ever today - we need to hear all of this. What can history tell us about the present? Shot in nine countries, the film explores what Hitler means in the current waves of white supremacy, antisemitism, and weaponization of history. "As fears of fascism and authoritarianism now abound, the film explores the myths and misconceptions of our understanding of the past, and the difficult process of coming to terms with it at a time in our history when it seems more urgent than ever." I watched this last year and highly recommend it.

IFC Films Acquires Documentary ‘The Meaning of Hitler’ (Exclusive)
Image
IFC Films has acquired North American rights to “The Meaning of Hitler,” Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker’s thought-provoking documentary about the enduring cultural fascination with the Nazi dictator and its resonance on contemporary politics.

Filmed over the course of four years, the documentary is set against the backdrop of the current rise of white supremacy and anti-Semitism, and explores the myths and misconceptions of our understanding of the past. Shot in nine countries, “The Meaning of Hitler” traces the dictator’s movements, his rise to power, and the scenes of his crimes through the lens of key locations in his life.

The documentary’s framework is inspired by Sebastian Haffner’s 1978 best-selling book of the same title, which dismantled the legend surrounding Hitler’s life through interviews with subjects including Martin Amis, Saul Friedländer, Richard Evans, Yehuda Bauer and famed Nazi hunters Beate and Serge Klarsfeld.

L.A. Law (1986)
‘LA Law’ Sequel With Blair Underwood in Development at ABC
L.A. Law (1986)
A sequel to NBC’s “L.A. Law” starring Blair Underwood is in development, but this time at ABC.

The project would see Underwood reprise his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins alongside a new crop of young lawyers.

Marc Guggenheim would write the series and executive produce alongside Ubah Mohamed, with Anthony Hemmingway directing. Jesse Bochco, the son of the late Steven Bochco (who co-created the original series), would also executive produce.

Here is the logline for the new version: The venerable law firm of McKenzie Brackman reinvents itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases. Blair Underwood reprises his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins, who has gone from idealistic to more conservative as he clashes with millennial JJ Freeman to decide the best path forward for the firm to effect political and legal change.

The original “L.A. Law” ran for eight seasons on...

‘The Meaning of Hitler’ Review: A Look At Why the Icon of 20th-Century Hate Lives on in the 21st
Image
When a documentary is called “The Meaning of Hitler,” there are two things you know off the bat. One is that the film probably won’t live up to that title — and doesn’t have to, because how could it? The other thing you know is that it’s trying for something audacious, placing itself on the high bar of who-was-Adolf-Hitler? meditation. And that’s a good thing, since for all the mystery that still surrounds Hitler we do know a great deal about him, and we want a movie like this one to jolt us with the shock of the new. The author Martin Amis, who’s one of the most compelling people interviewed here, says that if you can expand our knowledge of Hitler by just a millimeter, you’ve done something. We go into “The Meaning of Hitler” craving that millimeter of insight, of intrigue and revelation.

‘The Meaning of Hitler’ Review: Terrifying Proof That Fascism Can Happen Anywhere
Image
Time has a tendency to flatten history’s darkest chapters, reducing panic and persecution to footnotes and caricature. So it goes with Adolf Hitler, whose outsized image as a cartoon villain often obscures the horrifying endurance of Nazi ideology today. “The Meaning of Hitler” sets the record straight. , directors Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker’s eerie and insightful essay film burrows into the nexus of Hitler’s mythology in a remarkable attempt to determine whether it makes more sense to understand its resilience or tune it out. As it meanders through a parade of talking heads, pensive narration, fragments of biography, and genocidal sightseeing, the movie assembles a trenchant argument against shrugging aside the specter of Nazism, and makes it clear that the fascism of the past can happen just as easily today.

This is not uncharted terrain. “The Meaning of Hitler” takes its title from Sebastian Haffner’s 1978 German bestseller,...

‘Succession’s’ Jeremy Strong joins a very short list of Best Drama Actor Emmy champs to defeat a co-star
Image
Just like on “Succession,” the Number One Boy got the better of Logan Roy (for now). Jeremy Strong beat his TV father Brian Cox for the Best Drama Actor Emmy on Sunday, becoming just the sixth person to topple a co-star in the category.

The “Succession” twosome were the 17th pair of co-star drama actor nominees, but winning against a co-star has proven to be difficult. The only drama actor champs who’ve managed to do it are “I Spy’s” Bill Cosby, who went 3-0 against Robert Culp from 1966-68; “St. Elsewhere’s” Ed Flanders and William Daniels, who beat each other (Flanders in 1983 and Daniels in 1985 and ’86); Dennis Franz, who trump two “NYPD Blue” partners, David Caruso (1994) and Jimmy Smits; and “This Is Us'” Sterling K. Brown, who defeated Milo Ventimiglia on their first go-around in 2017.

Flanders and Daniels are the only co-stars to have notched a victory over the other,...

Lady Gaga’s ‘911’ video is her wildest ‘Chromatica’ head-trip yet: Watch it, and stick around for the twist ending
Image
Lady Gaga has always been an ambitious visual artist, from her red carpet fashions to her onstage performances, and of course to her music videos. On September 18 she dropped “911,” her third single and video from her “Chromatica” album, and it may be her most adventurous yet. Watch it above, and stick around for the twist ending.

The video opens with Lady Gaga waking up in the desert and arriving at a place filled with strange characters and religious imagery. All of this would only seem unusual if you weren’t watching a Lady Gaga video, but by the end we discover that all those images are her unconscious mind’s interpretation of the scene after she is involved in a severe traffic accident. Watch it again after seeing what it all represents, and it all clicks together in a stirring, unsettling way. It’s no surprise, then, that it was directed by Tarsem Singh,...

‘Succession’ fields the 17th drama actor Emmy duo with Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong
Image
Logan Roy and his Number One Boy’s new battleground? The Emmys. Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong both nabbed Best Drama Actor nominations Tuesday for “Succession” to become the 17th pair of co-stars to be nominated together.

The two are up against Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Steve Carell (“Better Call Saul”), reigning champ Billy Porter (“Pose”) and former champ Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”).

Cox’s and Strong’s bids mark the fourth year in a row that co-stars have made the cut in this category. “This Is Us” scored nominations for Brown and Milo Ventimiglia from 2017-19, and “Westworld” fielded Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright in 2018.

Before that, “True Detective,” competing as a drama for its first season, ended a 12-year dry spell with bids for Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in 2014. “Six Feet Under” was the last show to do so prior to that in 2002 with Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause.

‘Succession’ is poised to produce the 17th pair of co-star drama actor nominees at the Emmys
Image
Yeah, yeah, we know “Succession” has never gotten any acting nominations from an industry group, but the drama series favorite is expected to break through at the Emmys with a handful, including double bids in drama actor for Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong. If Logan Roy and his Number One Boy make the cut, they’d be the 17th duo to be shortlisted in the category.

Double drama actor nominees from the same show have been the rage in recent years with “This Is Us” snagged bids for Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia three years running (2017-19) and “Westworld” getting Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright in two years ago. So the lack of aversion is good news for “Succession,” along with the unlimited nominating slots on the ballot.

Prior to this recent run, “True Detective” garnered nominations for Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey when it competed as a drama...

As He Considers Punishment For Wr DeSean Jackson’s Anti-Semitic Remarks, Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie Makes ‘The Meaning Of Hitler’ His First Film Documentary
Image
Updated Exclusive: While NFL players debate the severity of punishment that might come the way of Philadelphia Eagles Wr DeSean Jackson for tweeting anti-Semitic comments and evoking Adolf Hitler in a widely derided social media rant, team owner Jeffrey Lurie coincidentally launched his new production company Play/Action Pictures with what might be an ideal teaching tool for the player.

Lurie has teamed with Cinetic Media for their inaugural project The Meaning Of Hitler. Directed by Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker, the film uses the title of the bestselling book from 1978 to put a provocative spotlight on our culture’s fascination with Hitler and Nazism as it sets itself against the backdrop of the current rise of white supremacy, the normalization of antisemitism and the weaponization of history itself.

Filmed in nine countries over three years, the film traces Hitler’s movements, his rise...

Welcome to ‘Chromatica’: Inside Lady Gaga’s Triumphant Dance Floor Return
Image
On the Chromatica track “Free Woman,” Lady Gaga sings with conviction: “This is my dance floor I fought for.” She’s not exaggerating; her sixth album is, in many ways, about the journey that paved the way for the pop superstar’s triumphant return to dance music.

“I think that the beginning of the album really symbolizes, for me, what I would call the beginning of my journey to healing,” Gaga told Zane Lowe in a recent interview, “and what I would hope would be an inspiration for people that...

Lady Gaga’s New Album: Here’s Everything We Know About LG6
Lady Gaga at an event for The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards (2015)
“Stupid Love,” the lead single from Lady Gaga’s upcoming sixth full-length album, is dropping on Friday, February 28th at midnight Et, the star announced via social media — and, unsurprisingly, the fans are speculating.

One theory is that the album will be called Chromatica, as the word can be found on the single art. It doesn’t hurt that the word “chromatic” has both aural and visual definitions that are very Gaga-esque: “[Music] relating to or using notes not belonging to the diatonic scale of the key in which a passage...

YouTube Millionaires: Michael Tucker Of ‘Lessons from the Screenplay’ Has Been Dissecting Movies For Years. Now, He’s Making His Own.
Michael Tucker’s very first YouTube video was a solid success. An analytical dissection of the screenplay for hotly-debated thriller film Gone Girl, it garnered nearly two million views and drew in 8,000 subscribers within a week.

Prior to joining YouTube, Tucker had nailed a big job in the documentary sector — but executing other people’s visions wasn’t working out for him, and when that project fizzled, he started looking for a way to share his own content. His Gone Girl video took months of work to conceptualize and produce, but when Tucker’s work paid off in view and subscriber count, he knew YouTube was a natural fit.

Since that first video back in 2016, he’s produced nearly 50 more, covering contemporary and classic films like The Devil Wears Prada, Groundhog Day, The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, and The Last Jedi. His videos delve into all aspects of filmmaking,...

For those of you who are into filmmaking and storytelling, there’s a great YouTube series you should be watching called Lessons from the Screenplay. In this episode, Michael Tucker takes a look at and breaks down an iconic scene from the incredible thriller Silence of the Lambs.

Fox Dedicates The Steven Bochco Building To Famed TV Producer
The Fox building where the late producer Steven Bocho made television magic with such hit shows as Doogie Howser, M.D. and NYPD Blue has been dedicated to his name. It will henceforth be known as the Steven Bochco Building, with a plaque bearing his trademark signature greeting visitors at its entrance.

On hand to celebrate the dedication were a collection of stars that made those shows sizzle, including Dennis Franz and Kim Delaney of NYPD Blue; Jimmy Smits, Corbin Bernsen, Michael Tucker, Jill Eikenberry and Susan Ruttan of L.A. Law; and James Sikking and Belinda Montgomery of Doogie Howser, M.D.

The ceremony was led by Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Gary Newman, who was joined by Bochco’s wife, Dayna. Bochco died last month at age 74 after a struggle with cancer.

In addition to the above shows, 20th Century Fox helped Bochco produce Hill Street Blues,...

Steven Bochco Building Dedication Feels Like More of a Family Reunion
Steven Bochco
On a sunny weekend afternoon, the Fox lot was quiet except for the group that gathered to dedicate Building 1 to the writer-producer-showrunner who occupied it for the last few decades: Steven Bochco. The building now bears his name and a plaque with his distinct signature, which was also used as his production card on his television shows.

Gary Newman, chairman and CEO of Fox Television Group, spoke at the dedication, acknowledging the presence of cast members from “NYPD Blue,” “L.A. Law” and “Doogie Howser, M.D.” including Jimmy Smits, Dennis Franz, Kim Delaney, Jill Eikenberry, Michael Tucker, Gordon Clapp, James B. Sikking, Susan Ruttan and James McDaniel. Looking around those gathered, Newman noted, “Steven always cast the best of the best.”

Newman said the decision to rename the building was made swiftly and with the full agreement of the studio bosses. He pointed out, “As long as I’ve been on this lot,...

Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Faithe Herman in This Is Us (2016)
‘This Is Us’ would be first show to score back-to-back double Best Drama Actor Emmy nominations in 19 years
Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Faithe Herman in This Is Us (2016)
“This Is Us” pulled off a surprise last year when both Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia made the Best Drama Actor Emmy lineup. They were just the fifth pair of co-stars this century to nab nominations. None of the other four duos accomplished it again — one pair, “True Detective”’s Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in 2014, was a one-and-done deal — so if Brown and Ventimiglia make the cut again, they’d be the first co-stars to go back-to-back in the category since 1999.

The last twosome to score multiple Best Drama Actor nominations together were “NYPD Blue” stars Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits, who went on a five-year streak from 1995 to 1999, with Franz winning three times and Smits going 0-5. Franz won his first Emmy for the cop drama in 1994 against his original partner in crime, David Caruso.

Fionn Whitehead in Dunkirk (2017)
‘Dunkirk’ Is Too Loud For Some Viewers, But Christopher Nolan Says That’s the Way He Likes It
Fionn Whitehead in Dunkirk (2017)
Yesterday during an advance screening of “Atomic Blonde,” the roar of “Dunkirk” from the theater below could be heard — and felt — above and beyond an ass-kicking Charlize Theron. Christopher Nolan’s World War II movie is loud — but when does soundscape become bombast?

Read More: Here’s Why ‘Dunkirk’ Will Likely Make $200 Million At the Domestic Box Office

“It was Very loud. Too loud in fact,” wrote a Reddit user in a popular post titled “PSA: A warning about Dunkirk.” “It might be the loudest movie I’ve ever seen. I don’t mean like a gun shot here or an explosion there, I mean sustained loud noises for minutes at a time. For large sections of the movie the soundtrack and the effects merge in this cacophony of noise and it becomes difficult to differentiate between any of the sounds. On a number of occasions it actually distracted me...

‘Arrival’ Video Essay Examines How the Script Helps Us Further Understand Ourselves — Watch
Denis Villeneuve
In his latest Lessons from the Screenplay video, YouTube user Michael Tucker takes a look at Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival,” the film adaptation of the short story by Ted Chiang, “Story of Your Life.” He focuses on the changes made to the original story by screenwriter Eric Heisserer and the further tweaks made by Villeneuve and editor Joe Walker, “in order to bring the essence [of the story] into the cinematic realm.”

“Pure, thoughtful science fiction is never just about aliens or other worlds, or exciting visions of the future. At its core, hard sci-fi is about humanity, our hopes and fears, and behaviors,” Tucker says at the beginning of the video, adding that Chiang’s short story “is a great example of exactly this kind of science fiction.”
