‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit,’ ‘The Cleaning Lady’ Canceled at Fox
Image
Fox has canceled its drama series Alert: Missing Persons Unit and The Cleaning Lady.

The decision comes shortly after the two shows wrapped their 2024-25 seasons: Alert aired its last episode on May 27, and The Cleaning Lady finished up on June 3. They end their runs on Fox after three and four seasons.

The cancellations are not a big surprise, as Alert and The Cleaning Lady were at the lower end of Fox’s ratings for the season. In seven-day linear ratings (not including streaming), Alert averaged 2.16 million viewers and The Cleaning Lady, 1.68 million, well below the totals for renewed dramas Doc (4.6 million) and Murder in a Small Town (3.15 million). Fox also canceled first-year drama Rescue: Hi-Surf in May.

With the cancellations, Fox has just two shows still awaiting word on their futures. Animated series The Great North is running through the summer, and the network probably won’t make a decision for a while.

‘Cleaning Lady,’ ‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’ Canceled at Fox
Image
Both “The Cleaning Lady” and “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” have been canceled at Fox, Variety has learned.

“The Cleaning Lady” had aired four seasons at the broadcast network, while “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” had aired three. Both shows wrapped up with their respective season finales in the past two weeks.

Fox announced their fall schedule going into their upfront presentation to advertisers in May, with both “Cleaning Lady” and “Alert” in limbo at that time. The two shows now join fellow Fox drama “Rescue: Hi-Surf” on the chopping block.

Previously, Fox gave out massive four-season renewals for “The Simpsons,” “Bob’s Burgers” and “Family Guy,” while also bringing “American Dad” back to the network. The medical drama “Doc” has also been renewed for a second season, while Fox has picked up the one-hour comedy “Best Medicine,” dramatic thriller “Memory of a Killer,” and the multi-part scripted event “The Faithful.”

‘Alert’ & ‘The Cleaning Lady’ Canceled By Fox
Image
Fox has determined the fate of two bubble shows, canceling dramas Alert: Missing Persons Unit after three seasons and The Cleaning Lady after four.

The network had delayed final decisions on its remaining bubble series until after their current seasons had aired. Alert wrapped its Season 3 run on May 27, and The Cleaning Lady‘s fourth season ended on June 3.

The cancellations do not come as a surprise as Alert, The Cleaning Lady as well as the other two Fox scripted series not picked up for next season, Accused and The Great North, sit at the bottom of the network’s 2024-25 season rankings.

Animated comedy The Great North also is expected to be canceled once its current fifth season ends later this month.

As for anthology Accused, developed and executive produced by Howard Gordon, it might come back in the future for a limited run as an event, Michael Thorn,...

‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’ Trailer: First Look At Malcolm-Jamal Warner As Mpu’s Chief Inspector
Image
Fox has dropped the first trailer for Season 3 of Alert: Missing Persons Unit which gives us a peek at Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Chief Inspector Bill Houston, who steps into an interim role with oversight of the Mpu.

It’s “all hands on deck”, says Warner’s Houston, as the Mpu searches for Nikki (Dania Ramirez), one of the Mpu’s own.

Houston, a former Army Captain, believes in structure and rules and, in the past, had issues with Jason’s (Scott Caan) cowboy tactics. He begins to come around to the idea that some rules need to be broken once he sees the results the team gets with their unorthodox approach. He will become the father figure Mpu didn’t know they needed.

From Season 3 Review: Horrifying MGM+ Show Delivers Shocking Revelations & Most Gruesome Scene Ever
Image
I first discovered From a little after season 1 began airing, while checking out some of the original series Epix (now MGM+) had to offer. The series hooked me immediately. The slow burn of its multi-layered mystery coupled with compelling characters makes for an intriguing watch. Now, having watched the first five episodes of From season 3, I'm thrilled to report this season is already the best in the series so far.

‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’ Renewed for Third Season on Fox
Image
Fox will keep its Missing Persons Unit on the job for another season.

The network has renewed the drama series Alert: Missing Persons Unit for a third season in 2024-25. The series will remain in production after season two wraps, which will bank episodes leading into next season and potentially serve as a hedge against a possible IATSE strike in the summer.

Alert is one of just two dramas Fox has aired in 2023-24 as the network relied heavily on its unscripted and animated rosters, which weren’t affected by last year’s dual strikes. Fox has yet to make a call on the other drama, The Cleaning Lady.

Alert stars Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez as Philadelphia detectives who head the city’s missing persons unit and work to find missing or abducted people and reunite them with loved ones. Adeola Role, Ryan Broussard and Alisha-Marie Ahamed also star...

‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’ Renewed For Season 3 By Fox
Image
Exclusive: Fox has given a Season 3 pickup to Alert: Missing Persons Unit. The renewal of the procedural drama, starring Scott Caan and Dania Ramirez, has been expected.

To make filming more cost-efficient for series producers Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment, Alert will remain in continuous production, segueing from the abbreviated-by-the-strikes second season to Season 3, whose episode count is still Tbd, I hear. There is an additional benefit to filming Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back — Fox will have fresh episodes of the series in case production is disrupted by an IATSE strike this summer.

There is no word yet on Fox’s other outstanding drama series, The Cleaning Lady. As Deadline has reported, it also is looking good for renewal.

Michael Rapaport Dramedy ‘Flagrant’ Among 2 Series Set At Chicken Soup For The Soul By Newly Launched Strong Studios Run By David Ozer
Image
Diversified holding company Ballantyne Strong has launched Strong Studios, a new wing of its entertainment division, with two scripted series already in the works for 2022.

Supernatural horror outing Safehaven and Michael Rapaport dramedy Flagrant have been greenlit by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment’s Screen Media subsidiary, which will distribute them. The company’s ad-supported streaming services, Crackle, Popcornflix and Chicken Soup for the Soul have premiere rights.

Cementing the connection between Strong and Chicken Soup for the Soul is David Ozer, who has been appointed president of Strong Studios. Ozer formerly was CEO of Landmark Studio Group, a division of Chicken Soup. In part because of the familiar executive relationship, the companies said “many additional collaborations are expected” down the line.

Based in New York, Strong Studios will develop and produce original film and TV projects as well as acquiring distribution rights to third-party productions. Along with investments in forest management,...

‘Ted K’ Film Review: Impressionistic Unabomber Drama Reveals the Man Beneath the Monster
Peter Dunning in Peter and the Farm (2016)
A risky experiment with a striking payoff, “Ted K” is an impressionistic attempt to personalize the most unrelatable experience imaginable: life as a killer.

Prolific serial killers are often introduced with media-minded nicknames, making it easier for us simultaneously to separate from them and to connect with them. We look upon them as Other, but remain interested, reading and worrying and wondering until — and well after — they’re caught.

The Unabomber is among the most notable examples, with 26 victims spanning nearly two decades. His incomprehensible violence spurred the largest manhunt in FBI history, and as it went on, we all kept reading, and worrying, and wondering.

Director Tony Stone (“Peter and the Farm”) and his cowriters, John Rosenthal and Gaddy Davis, strip most of the rest away in an attempt to address the incomprehensibility. Certainly, the film’s generically ordinary title is no coincidence. Stone wants us to see Ted...

Trigger Point review – amnesia spy thriller that’s instantly forgettable
Barry Pepper
Barry Pepper does his best as an amnesiac ex-operative in a film whose inventive locations do not cover up its pedestrian plot

The “intelligence community” proves to be a misnomer on both counts in this dud round of a thriller. With a head-scratching heap of betrayals and double-crossings, and none of the operatives smart enough to see them coming, it doesn’t leave you brimming with confidence about national security. Mid-noughties intensity merchant Barry Pepper makes a fine action hero at 51. But veteran TV director Brad Turner’s big overarching conspiracy isn’t involving enough to give Trigger Point the Bourne-like kickback it wants.

Trigger Point Review: Barry Pepper Causes Calculated Chaos in Bourne-Esque Thriller
Things get off to a pretty rocky start with Brad Turner’s Trigger Point thanks to a haphazard opening sequence comprised of silencer shots and gun flashes as random bodies fall to the ground. It feels like the cold open to a television show and thus the precursor to what will ultimately feel like a made-for-tv actioner. That we quickly move to a day in the life of Nicolas Shaw (Barry Pepper) with high-tech gadgets in a low-tech small-town setting with loquacious acquaintances at the diner and bookshop doesn’t necessarily help matters since it all feels so artificial. Things finally settle down upon discovering that’s kind of the point.

Screenwriter Michael Vickerman has created a man in hiding. Those bodies that fell at the beginning—that was a year ago. And Nicolas may have been the reason for their deaths. He doesn’t remember it, but his former...

We've got your first look at Trigger Point starring Barry Pepper, Colm Feore and Laura Vandervoort, which hit theaters and On Demand later this month. The film stars Barry Pepper as Nicolas Brazer, a retired U.S. special operative who, after being blamed for the exposure and ultimately the assassination of several members of his own team, disappeared into a life of solitude and indignity. Now two years removed, he is reluctantly drawn back into this dangerous world to not only clear his name but prevent the killing of a new generation of operatives.

In Trigger Point, a disgraced U.S. operative who suffered memory loss at the hand of captors is dragged back into the deadly spy world when a colleague goes missing. He needs all of his skills to find her but to uncover the truth he must remember the past. Nicolas Brazer is a retired U.S.

Barry Pepper, Colm Feore, and Laura Vandervoort in Trigger Point (2021)
Barry Pepper Clears His Name in Action Movie 'Trigger Point' Trailer
Barry Pepper, Colm Feore, and Laura Vandervoort in Trigger Point (2021)
"Everyone breaks." Screen Media Films has released an official trailer for Trigger Point, a hitman action film from filmmaker Brad Turner, the director of Species III and tons of TV series over the last few decades. Nicolas Shaw is a retired U.S. special operative who becomes part of an elite "invisible" team that quietly takes out the worst villains around the world. After being blamed for the deaths of fellow team members and laying low for two years, Shaw now must clear his name and prevent the killing of a new generation of noble operatives. Will he able to save the day or will they finally catch up with him? Barry Pepper stars as Shaw, and the cast includes Colm Feore, Laura Vandervoort, Eve Harlow, Jayne Eastwood, and Karen Robinson. As much as I enjoy Barry Pepper, it doesn't look like there's anything interesting going on here. Here's the...

Meta Thriller ‘Ayar’ Is a Portrait of a Breakdown, and a Filmmaker Jolted by Lockdown
Image
It can be dizzying to keep up with exactly where “Ayar” is going from moment to moment. Part psychological thriller, part immigration drama, part meta commentary on the nature of performance and the act of creation, Floyd Russ’ feature is — only to reel them back in with an intoxicatingly sinister atmosphere and a marvelous, unhinged lead performance. The movie follows singer and actress Ayar (Ariana Ron Pedrique), now out of work due to the pandemic, as she tries to reconnect with the young daughter she abandoned for stardom years ago. But what begins as seemingly Yet Another Covid Movie about everyday people grappling with lockdown mutates into something else entirely.

Ayar’s choice to leave her family, all dispersed Central American immigrants now living in Los Angeles, for a sleazy singing gig in Las Vegas wasn’t, we learn, entirely hers. As flashbacks reveal, she was pulled into a kind...

‘Ted K’: HanWay & Cinetic Board Berlin Film Festival Drama About Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, First Look
Image
HanWay Films and Cinetic have boarded Berlin Film Festival entry Ted K for international and North American sales, respectively. The companies have also released a first look image.

Writer-director Tony Stone’s true crime drama, starring Sharlto Copley (District 9) as the ‘Unabomber’ Ted Kaczynski, will play in the Panorama section of this year’s largely digital Berlinale.

The film tracks a period in the life of Kaczynski, more widely known as the Unabomber, and draws from his personal diaries and accounts from those who knew him during his life in hiding in a simple wooden cabin in the mountains of Montana.

According to the producers, a number of the film’s supporting cast are non-professional locals, some of whom knew Kaczynski, and the production worked closely with his former neighbors and employers to corroborate research and paint an authentic picture of the man.

Stone built a recreation of Kaczynski...

Adrian Holmes and Ian Somerhalder in V-Wars (2019)
Two of Netflix’s freshman drama series will not see a second season. The streaming giant has canceled vampire drama series V Wars starring Ian Somerhalder, based on Jonathan Maberry’s bestselling book, and October Faction, based on the Idw comics by Steve Niles, Deadline has confirmed.

V Wars, published in 2012 by Idw Publishing, debuted as a collection of prose stories that chronicles the first Vampire War. Somerhalder starred as Dr. Luther Swann, who enters a world of untold horror when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne, into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans. As the disease spreads and more people are transformed, society fractures into opposing camps pitting normal people against the growing number of these “vampires.” Swann races against time to understand what’s happening, while Fayne rises to become the powerful underground leader of the vampires.
