Transformers' Optimus Prime Gets First-Look Prototype Reveal in New Series Production Update

Roll out, Transformers fans -- Mpg-17 Style Gen. Optimus Prime just got a new, detailed look via reveals from the Transformers Generations 2025 book. The annual pseudo-catalog delivered prototype images and production sketches of the figure, as well as an interview with Takara Tomy designer Yuuya Onishi that charts the future of Transformers action figures.

The images revealed multiple design iterations -- even ones that didn't make it through production. It's a rare amount of transparency, letting enthusiasts peek into the Takara Tomy process, but the real juicy details came in Onishi's interview. The prototype images reveal an elaborate figure, with quotes from Onishi revealing how meticulously rendered it was. "While still aiming for top-tier quality, we wanted to ensure that the toy could be enjoyed casually on a daily basis," he said. "The key is simplifying the structure without losing a sense of density or believable transformation mechanics."
