Police Captain María Laguerta will soon be busy following Dexter’s blood-soaked trail when the seventh season of the Showtime hit drama "Dexter" premieres this week. But Puerto Rican actress Lauren Vélez, who plays the ruthless Laguerta, used the time between seasons to work on a project centered around another ambitious Cuban woman.

Vélez, a long time admirer of 1960s Cuban singer and exile Guadalupe “La Lupe” Victoria Yolí Raymond, will star and help produce "They Call Me La Lupe,” a biopic of the artist written by Luis Caballero and James Manos Jr. (creator of “Dexter”). To bring the film to the big screen -- also set to feature Dominican actress Judy Reyes (“Scrubs”) -- the Boricua and a team of producers are trying to raise $100,000 through Kickstarter, a popular social platform used to fund creative projects.

It looks like Judy Reyes is welcoming her own Bambi to the world, as the Scrubs star has just given birth.  People.com reports that the actress just had her daughter Leila Rey Valencia, born on Friday, November 27.  It's her first child with her boyfriend, director George Valencia.

If anyone else was wondering why Carla wasn't on the new season of Scrubs, here's what seems to be the main reason.  Judy Reyes will definitely have her hands full with a child keeping her busy.  But it won't be as simple as taking care of the patients as Sacred Heart.

Nurse Carla has delivered a baby. Judy Reyes, who is best known as the Latina nurse in the ABC sitcom "Scrubs," has given birth to a girl last week.

The 42-year-old actress and director boyfriend George Valencia have welcomed Leila Rey Valencia on November 27. The newborn weighed in at 6 lbs., 7 oz., and measured 19 inches long, according to People magazine.

Reyes previously said that she wants her daughter to inherit her smile, telling Pregnancy magazine, "I hope that she has perspective, a good sense of humor, patience, perseverance, and that she really just hangs in there to do what she's passionate about."

A baby girl has been born for Judy Reyes and her director boyfriend George Valencia. Per People, the actress gave birth to the bundle of joy at 7:11 P.M. on Friday, November 27. She weighed in at 6 lbs., 7 oz and was 19 inches long at time of birth. Judy and George name her Leila Rey Valencia.

Leila is the first child for both Judy and George. "Lelia is absolutely beautiful. Both mom and baby are very happy," Reyes' representative Patrick McCarthy tells Life and Style.

Judy Reyes was married to writer/director Edwin M. Figueroa for about 11 years before then dating George Valencia after they got divorced. News of her pregnancy was first reported by Ok! Magazine in June. In August, the actress then confirmed that she was pregnant with a baby girl.

Valencia has his 'Moment' on Showtime
George Valencia is the winner of Showtime's fourth annual Latino Filmmaker Showcase and will receive a $30,000 grant to use toward the production of a 15- to 30-minute short film, which will premiere next month on Showtime. Valencia wrote, directed and produced Moment to Moment, a short about how the everyday routine of an ordinary man is interrupted by the ordinary reality of his neighborhood. "I feel honored, very honored, to be chosen," Valencia said. "It's a great idea for the guys at Showtime to have our 16mm films run on their channel and be seen all over the country." Moment, along with the four finalist shorts, will screen Sept. 15 on the network as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Also airing will be last year's showcase winner, Gustavo Mercado's Vespertine, which was produced with the filmmaker's $30,000 grant.
