Who needs a house of horrors when you can stride alongside Philippe Petit, high above the hustle & bustle of 1970s New York, on a death-defying tightrope walk that’ll make your palms sweat and your head spin? Well, Robert Zemeckis’ 2015 biographical drama, The Walk, led you on a cinematic tightrope where you may find your stomach doing somersaults.
In this vertiginous venture, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Philippe Petit, we were invited to tangibly tread, albeit vicariously, between the iconic Twin Towers, chasing the footsteps of the legendary French high-wire artist. Zemeckis didn’t just let you watch; he placed you on that slender cable in the air, conjuring realism through the big screen that neither Petit’s own memoir nor the gripping documentary could.

Viscerally, the director’s objective was accomplished; there were tidings of audience members experiencing nausea, anxiety, or even walking out during screenings.

Some fears, like monsters under the bed, are universal and never fully conquered. The best horror movies tap into relatable anxieties. Horror movies featuring monsters under the bed effectively exploit the fear of the unknown lurking just beneath the sheets at night. The idea of a monster under the bed remains chilling, reminding us of childhood fears that still resonate in adulthood.
In a monsters under the bed movie, the classic childhood fear is put on screen in all its claustrophobic glory as a reminder that some fears aren't ever completely conquered. The best horror movies of all time encompass a variety of styles, settings, and fears that tap into specific anxieties and manage to be broadly relatable while still honing in on one particular fear. That's why shark movies are so popular, hitchhiker horror has so many variations, and not going into the attic is always a good idea.

It’s been almost three decades since “Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)” — a novelty dance track featuring rapid, part-rapped, part-scatted and mostly nonsensical rhymes — shot to the top of music charts around the world, especially in Europe. Now, the man behind the song is getting the biopic treatment.
John Larkin — better known by his stage name Scatman John — passed away from cancer in 1999 at the age of 57 — just five years after his most famous track was first released. But international production banner Trick Candle Productions has acquired the rights to his life story and is developing Scatman, set to chronicle the musician’s “wild life and positive influence.”
Written by Stephen Basilone (Community, The Goldbergs) and Annie Mebane (The Goldbergs, Shrinking), the film — which will include unparalleled access to the entire Scatman music library, as well as private home videos — will detail Larkin’s struggles with being a lifelong stutterer, bullying, abuse at home,...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! This month I’m chatting with Harmony Colangelo, a writer who specializes in transgender representation in media, including some great pieces on the recent vampire flick Bit and the cult classic Sleepaway Camp. She also just launched a brand new podcast with wife and (and previous Lsbtd guest) Bj Colangelo called This Ends at Prom, which is a delightful look at “teen girl” movies “through the lens of cis and trans femme perspectives.” It’s a fun, nuanced show and I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t yet had the chance.
Colangelo’s pick this month is an interesting one, as it finally gives me a chance to explore the wild world of Disney Channel Original Movies. Fans of the site of course know that Derek Anderson is our resident Dcom expert. Given the fact that the first...

Two funny episodes in a row? Is that allowed?
That's debatable, but a fun time was had when the Osp team threw in with two reformed British criminals and a former North Korean spy on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 11 Episode 6.
When the Brits are played by well-known scenery chewers Steve Valentine and Vinnie Jones, you know you'll have to listen closely if you're going to keep up.
Like much of British humor, it was all about the dialogue, some of which doesn't translate well into American English.
No wonder Sam and Callen were grousing when Deeks and Fatima got into the act.
I enjoyed that myself. Fatima had a flawless accent, but Deeks, as always when he's in character, exaggerated his accent.

Chicago – I am not opposed to dramatic retellings of true events from history, but I think the drama should at least be as entertaining as a PBS documentary on the same subject. “The Walk” tells the true story of a French wire walker and the twin tower World Trade Center in the mid-1970s.
..when he strung a wire between them, and then proceeded to walk from one tower to the other without a net more than a thousand feet in the air.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
While its vertigo inducing finale delivers the goods, “The Walk” can’t quite justify its own existence especially since there’s a perfectly fascinating documentary about the same subject readily available. For a movie that is supposed to be a visual spectacle, it spends an awful lot of time violating the classic rule of cinema by telling instead of showing.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, sporting an exaggerated but not entirely ridiculous French accent,...

Over the weekend, audiences at the New York Film Festival were the very first to get a look at the new Robert Zemeckis movie The Walk, as Nyff officially got underway. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the film is hoping to take some solid word of mouth and make itself into an Oscar player. As one of the few Academy Award hopefuls that hadn’t yet screened for the public, a fair amount was riding on this one. We certainly don’t have a new frontrunner on our hands or anything of the sort, but it’s not something to cross off your list either. The Walk is somewhere in between, which makes my job a bit harder, but that’s nothing really new for me… For those unaware what the film is about, it’s a narrative feature version of the documentary Man on Wire. The doc, as well as this movie,...

I knew how it ended before I walked into the theater. After all, I've seen "Man On Wire," and it ended up on my ten best list for 2008, and I know how the story ends. Beyond that, I knew that I was looking at the state-of-the-art of what visual effects could accomplish in the year 2015 and not actual footage of an event in the '70s. Even so, the new Robert Zemeckis film "The Walk" made my hands sweat and my stomach ache for a solid 45 minutes, and I suspect it's going to be a big-screen sensation thanks to people going back to witness it several times. One of the truths of the new age of theatrical distribution is that you have to give an audience a reason to go to a theater and not just wait for a more convenient time and place to see a film. If you...

"No matter where I was going, or what I was doing, I was always searching for the perfect place to hang my wire." Sony has debuted one last extended nearly 5-minute long IMAX trailer for Robert Zemeckis' The Walk, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Philippe Petit. It takes palce in the 1970s, when Petit came to New York and strung a tight rope between the original two World Trade Towers. This shows how much the story involves many other people who helped him along the way, like his mentor played by Ben Kingsley, and his girlfriend, played by Charlotte Le Bon. The cast also includes James Badge Dale, Ben Schwartz & Steve Valentine. I think it looks really good, I'm still looking forward to seeing this - hitting theaters soon. Joseph Gordon-Levitt may have lost out on a possible Oscar nod when Oliver Stone’s timely drama Snowden bowed out of this year’s awards circuit, but the actor still has a horse in the race, so to speak, with Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming real-life drama, The Walk.
Boasting a near unparalleled sense of scale and grandeur, it’s rather apt for the director’s new film to receive an extensive IMAX trailer, spotlighting the impressive visual effects that will be bringing Philippe Petit’s daring feat to life like never before. Gordon-Levitt is on board to topline the white-knuckle ride as the French wire artist, who dared to dream in 1974 by walking across a tightrope strung between the Twin Towers. Not only did Petit pull off the remarkable stunt, as he tip-toed along the New York City skyline, but he managed to cross the rope several times, even lying down at one point.

Leave it to Robert Zemeckis to make one man balancing on a tightrope more of a visual spectacle than anything else hitting theaters this fall – and that’s including trips to Neverland, future dystopias and Gothic haunted houses. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays French daredevil Philippe Petit in The Walk – and in the new trailer for the pic, adapted from Petit’s book To Reach the Clouds, he appears to have one of the most exciting – and physically demanding – roles of his career.
Petit’s story – involving an illegal wire walk between the World Trade Center towers in 1974 – was last adapted to film in James Marsh’s documentary Man on Wire, which won an Oscar back in 2008.
Here’s the official synopsis:
