The Friday Night Lights Star Who Almost Became Marvel's Captain America
Image
When "Iron Man" took the worldwide box office by storm in the summer of 2008, it did so with the audacious promise of not just sequels, but the creation of an entire big-screen universe that would culminate in the superhero mash-up comic book fans had been dreaming of since they were children. Could this newfangled Marvel Cinematic Universe hook enough rank-and-file moviegoers to achieve this lofty goal?

This would all be contingent on numerous gambles breaking in the company's favor. Marvel had to team steady-handed directors with color-inside-the-lines screenwriters, who would then hope like hell that the not-quite-a-list stars they'd cast to play these heroes could turn them into billion-dollar franchise pillars.

The most well-publicized casting competition at the time centered on finding the perfect, fresh-faced up-and-coming star to take up the shield of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. I was covering this process at the time for Ain't It Cool News,...

3 things we learned about Mike White’s forgotten first show ‘Pasadena’
Image
When it comes to Mike White's TV credits that are not The White Lotus, most people would probably name the gone-too-soon Enlightened, his early work as a writer on Dawson's Creek and Freaks and Geeks, or even his reality stints on The Amazing Race (twice) and Survivor. But one that hardly ever comes up is Pasadena.

The Fox prime-time soap was the first series White created. Named after his California hometown, the show had the nascent marks of what everyone loves about The White Lotus now: a mysterious death, backstabbing, secrets, privileged white people, and even sexual tension between — yes — siblings. It starred Dana Delany as the matriarch of the wealthy Greeleys. After her daughter, Lily (Alison Lohman), witnesses a murder, family secrets are uncovered. The cast also included Martin Donovan, Balthazar Getty, Mark Valley, Christopher Marquette, and Natasha Gregson Wagner. Diane Keaton even directed the pilot. Pasadena got...

This 16-Year-Old Fox Sci-Fi Series Is an Underrated Classic
Image
Fringe's stellar cast and unique character arcs set it apart from typical sci-fi series like The X-Files. The show's blend of procedural cases and deep mythology kept audiences engaged and invested in its complex narrative. Fringe took risks with its final season, delivering a satisfying conclusion that rewarded dedicated fans with a unique storytelling approach.

At a time on television when everyone was looking for "the next Lost," the alumni from that series, J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, were working on "the next The X-Files." Centered around an FBI agent, an eccentric scientist and polyglot con artist, Fringe was a revolutionary science fiction series on Fox that blazed its own path at the height of "Peak TV." Equal parts procedural and serialized mythos-driven drama, Fringe is a show worth revisiting almost two decades later. The cast in this series is stellar, and a huge reason for the show's success.

Rumor: DC Studios Developing A Human Target Project Based On Tom King's Comic Book Run
Image
With James Gunn calling the shots at DC Studios, we're expecting a far greater number of obscure characters from the comics to get their chance to shine in the new Dcu.

That's exciting for fans and if a new rumour shared by FilmFront is anything to go by, a Human Target TV series is also in development.

Comic book writer Tom King (who is working on Lanterns and inspired Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow with his series of the same name) has reportedly been working on the projects since the start of 2024. He'll be Human Target's main writer and the search for a showrunner - and lead star - is said to be underway.

As you might expect, Gunn and Peter Safran will executive produce.

Warner Bros. launched a Human Target TV series in 2010 starring Mark Valley as Christopher Chance. That ran for two seasons - a total of 25 episodes - on Fox,...

Blood & Treasure Canceled at Paramount+
Oded Fehr, Matt Barr, Katia Winter, and Sofia Pernas in Blood & Treasure (2019)
There will be no third season of Blood & Treasure.

The treasure-hunting drama has been canceled after two seasons, according to TV Line.

No reason has been given for the cancellation, but the writing was on the wall when the show was renewed in 2019 while the first season was airing, and then the show disappeared.

It started its life on CBS, but it was announced in 2022 that the series would return with its long-delayed second season that year.

Given the length of time between seasons, many assumed the show was dead.

Fueling the rumors that the show was dead even more was that the cast moved on to other projects.

Co-creator Matthew Federman wrote the following on Twitter on the day of the Season 2 finale airing.

"I don't know what the future holds but I'm very proud of what we got to do with this show, shooting our little action...

Blood & Treasure Season 2 Finally Gets a Trailer, and It’s More Mysterious Than Ever
Oded Fehr, Matt Barr, Katia Winter, and Sofia Pernas in Blood & Treasure (2019)
Blood & Treasure Season 2 will finally see the light of day.

As previously reported, Paramount+ will air the long-delayed second season, beginning Sunday, July 17th with two episodes.

Subsequent episodes will drop weekly on Sundays.

The decision means that viewers who watched on CBS will no longer be able to keep up to speed unless they watch on the streaming service.

The move to streaming worked for both Seal Team and Evil, with both shows scoring renewals following their launch on the streaming service.

It's unclear whether the long wait between seasons will affect the negotiations for a third season.

It's hard to believe any of the cast is still under contract, so it might be difficult to get everyone back together.

Blood & Treasure Season 1 Episode 8 Review: The Lunchbox of Destiny
That was an effective change of pace.

The name Cleopatra barely came up on Blood & Treasure Season 1 Episode 8.

I worried about the hunt for Cleopatra getting old after a certain amount of episodes.

Instead, the powers that be decided to use Danny and Lexi's unique skill sets to solve a different mystery.

It was a nice breather from chasing the ghosts of Nazis all the time.

Instead, Danny went home to Boston and Lexi came with him.

Not that they had much choice as they were pretty much shanghaied by FBI Agent Harper to assist him in a cold case that had a personal connection to Danny.

'Days of our Lives' Alum Steve Wilder Cut From Film After Sex Offender Past Revealed (Updated)
A scene in the forthcoming Twentieth Century Fox movie The Predator featuring former Days of our Lives star Steven Wilder Striegel was cut after the studio learned he is Connecticut’s sex offender registry.

The studio's move, first reported by the Los Angeles Times, occurred immediately after it learned of the actor's background.

Striegel was arrested by Newtown police in August 2009 on charges of engaging in an inappropriate internet relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Age 38 at the time, he was living in New York while the girl was living in Newtown.

He was convicted in May 2010 of two felonies, risk of injury to a minor and enticing a minor by computer. He was sentenced in August 2010 to 10 years in prison, suspended after he served six months in jail, and three years of probation.

He remains listed on Connecticut’s sex offender registry.

Striegel is a longtime friend of the film’s director,...

Justin Hartley in Trailer for Indie Time Travel Romance 'Another Time'
"I can't send you back... Look, these equations - they're still unsolved!" Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for a time travel indie romance titled Another Time, from filmmaker Thomas Hennessy. The film seems to be a riff on About Time and The Time Traveler's Wife, but looks nowhere near as good as those two films. The story follows a man who travels back in time for a chance at love, who meets a woman who might be the one, even though she's not the original one he wants. Of course. Justin Hartley (from "This Is Us") stars as Eric, along with Arielle Kebbel, James Kyson, Chrishell Stause, Mark Valley, Jake McLaughlin, Alan Pietruszewski, and Tucker Smallwood. I can't even begin to describe how terrible this looks, everything about it seems so awful and repellent. Thankfully the trailer is free to watch. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Thomas Hennessy's Another Time,...

11 TV Shows You Forgot Were Based on Comic Books (Photos)
Roger Cross, Jodelle Ferland, Anthony Lemke, Zoie Palmer, Melissa O'Neil, and Alex Mallari Jr. in Dark Matter (2015)
“Dark Matter” (Syfy)

The “Dark Matter” TV series came years after the debut of the Dark Horse comic book it’s based on, but creators Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie originally conceived of the series — about six individuals who wake up on a starship together with their memories wiped — as a TV show before it was redeveloped as a comic in 2012.

“Wynonna Earp” (Syfy)

Syfy has a number of science fiction series based on lesser known comic book titles, including the fan-favorite “Wynonna Earp,” starring Melanie Scrofano as the demon-fighting descendent of legendary lawman Wyatt Earp.

“Outcast” (Cinemax)

After the massive success of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” creator Robert Kirkman went on to adapt his supernatural horror comic series “Outcast” for television. The adaptation, starring Patrick Fugit as the titular outcast, debuted on Cinemax in 2016.

“iZombie” (The CW)

The CW’s “Arrowverse” gets all the attention for being the...

Corporate's Anne Dudek Remembers Jobs on ER, House, Bones and More

Anne Dudek isn’t a soulless corporate drone, but she’s having a really good time playing one on TV.

Dudek’s latest role, Kate on Comedy Central’s Corporate — which premieres tonight at 10/9c — is an ambitious executive at a corporation where humanity is leached from employees as they climb the corporate ladder. (No seriously, it’s a comedy.)

Antonio Banderas & Olga Kurylenko in Trailer for 'Gun Shy' Comedy
"Rock out with your glock out." Saban Films has debuted the first official trailer for an action comedy called Gun Shy, formerly known as Salty (which is the title that appears on the very early poster art seen below the trailer). The movie stars Antonio Banderas as an over-the-top rockstar named Turk Henry, with a wife played by Olga Kurylenko. She gets kidnapped while the two are vacationing in Chile, and Banderas recruits some wacky people to help him find and free her. Sounds like a fun straight-to-vhs concept for an action movie, why not. The full cast includes Ben Cura, Mark Valley, Aisling Loftus, David Mitchell, Jeremy Swift, and Jesse Johnson. This really looks ridiculous, but it may be a fun beer-and-pizza rental. Here's the first official trailer (+ new poster) for Simon West's Gun Shy, direct from YouTube: When vacationing in Chile, an aging and pampered rock star...

Bloodline took a quite a detour before it crossed the finish line.

In the penultimate episode of the Netflix drama’s final season, which dropped on Friday, viewers were given a ringside seat to an extended, presumably near-death hallucination of John’s (Kyle Chandler). The Best Sitcoms That Need a Revival Now — IndieWire Critics Survey
Ted Danson, Shelley Long, John Ratzenberger, George Wendt, Nicholas Colasanto, and Rhea Perlman in Cheers (1982)
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: In light of the recent “Roseanne” revival news, which sitcom would you like to see a revival of? (Let’s assume this is feasible from a network, talent, production, etc. standpoint.)

Liz Shannon Miller (@lizlet), IndieWire

So many great sitcoms are personality driven, which makes it hard to remember great premises worth reviving. (And also, when I think about some of my ‘90s favorites, like “Step by Step” or “Friends,” it’s like… Oh, maybe there’s nothing new under the sun.)

But, beyond my eternal wish that someone would remake “Almost Human” as an adorable rom-com about Karl Urban and Robot Michael Ealy falling in...
