Netflix has acquired the spec script and aims to fast track Out There, a new high concept sci-fi thriller described as in the vein of A Quiet Place and Cloverfield, Deadline reports today.

Out There will mark the veteran editor Stefan Grube.

Plot details remain under wraps at this time, but the sci-fi thriller “revolves around a fractured family who must face the most catastrophic day of their lives.” Which does fall in line with the comparisons to A Quiet Place and Cloverfield. Considering Grube’s work on the suspenseful 10 Cloverfield Lane, we can likely expect that same level of breathless tension here.

Grube’s credits also include Tully, The Front Runner, and Star Wars: Episode IX. As for the spec script that was picked up by Netflix, that hails from Shane Van Dyke, Carey Van Dyke and Ian Levy. The Van Dykes previously wrote Don’t Worry Darling, and Levy scripted Pay the Ghost.

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired the spec script Out There, a high-concept sci-fi thriller in the vein of A Quite Place and Cloverfield. Netflix intends to make this one for a price, and it will mark the directorial debut of Stefan Grube, the veteran film editor. Script is by Shane Van Dyke, Carey Van Dyke and Ian Levy. The Van Dykes’ credits include Don’t Worry Darling and Levy produced Pay the Ghost.

The Picture Company partners Alex Heineman & Andrew Rona will produce along with Josie Liang of Space Bandit. Nick Meyer of Sierra Pictures will serve as executive producer.

Grube hails from the world of post-production, having collaborated with directors Dan Trachtenberg, Jason Reitman and JJ Abrams. His editing credits include films such as 10 Cloverfield Lane, Tully, The Front Runner, and Star Wars: Episode IX. He has also crafted some of the better trailers of the past decade.

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have set a streaming premiere date for their psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, announcing that the film directed by and co-starring Olivia Wilde will debut on HBO Max on November 7.

Don’t Worry Darling tells the story of Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles), who are lucky to be living in the idealized community of Victory, the experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret Victory Project and their families. After weeks of behind the scenes drama that dominated the discourse, director Olivia Wilde‘s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling was released into theaters over the weekend, and the 1950s-set movie dominated the box office in the #1 spot. The film, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, pulled in 19.2 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.

Internationally, Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling added another 10.8 million to its total, with the film’s worldwide box office total now currently sitting pretty at 30 million.

The reported production budget for Don’t Worry Darling was 35 million, so it’s still got a ways to go before it recoups marketing costs and starts seeing some profits. The general rule of thumb is that a movie has to make 3x its production budget before ultimately becoming profitable, so Warner Bros. no doubt hopes this one eventually reaches 100 million.

After the trailer premiered, audiences could see the premise was a “Stepford Wives”-like society where women had traditional roles in a sunny utopian society. Once viewers saw the film, they saw this story expanded as Florence Pugh’s Alice character begins to realize that something isn’t right in the placid community of Victory. But as events progress, it becomes a little harder to tell what’s really going on, and the ending has left more than a few filmgoers scratching their heads.

According to Warner Bros.’ projections, the New Line Cinema film will earn 17 million from its opening weekend. Independent projections put that number at 18 million to 20 million. According to reports, its budget falls in the mid-20 million range.

The Florence Pugh and Harry Styles-starring psychological thriller premieres opposite Disney’s re-release of “Avatar” (2009), a few months before its sequel “The Way of Water” hits theaters. The David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream” expands wide after last week’s successful limited opening of 1.6 million. I never start a review commenting on whatever the so-called Film Twitter Mafia have to say about it, sight unseen. Starting back at CinemaCon in April when its directo/co-star Olivia Wilde was served legal papers onstage regarding her custody hearings with ex Jason Sudeikis, there has been non-stop gossip about her movie Don’t Worry Darling. There has been so much of it, right up to today’s Venice Film Festival press conference (covered by my colleague Nancy Tartaglione) that you almost have to address the elephant in the room. Others can do that, but let us not forget there is also a movie here, one I was able to preview as just that a few weeks ago in Burbank. As a reviewer, to quote Being There’s Chauncey Gardner, “I like to watch,” and that means only what is on the screen.

By now, the question isn’t whether you’ve heard of Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s social-thriller-cum-thirst-valentine — it’s what you’ve heard about it. High-profile hook-ups, the humiliating serving of papers during public appearances, leaked videos, cross-media sniping, several pints’ worth of alleged bad blood, the ghosting of press conferences, etc. Every film production is dysfunctional in its own way. This movie stands head and subzero-temp-cold shoulders above its peers in terms of salacious scuttlebutt, however. Wilde has said she set out to make “The Feminist Mystique on acid.

It would be easy to kick off a review of Olivia Wilde’s sophomore feature, “Don’t Worry Darling,” by toe-dipping into the world Wilde created — one that boasts some of the year’s most gorgeous craft work, from Arianne Phillips’ costumes to Katie Bryon’s production design to John Powell’s score — by tossing off something like, “In Olivia Wilde’s glittering ’50s fairy tale, set in the fictional desert idyll of Victory, all is not what it seems,” because that’s the entire point of this transparently designed cinematic nightmare.

It also would be incorrect, because everything actually is what it seems in Victory. “Don’t Worry Darling” is so clearly, so obviously not set in an idyllic ’50s community that to say the film packs a twist is not at twist at all. It’s disingenuous, easy, cheeky — much like the film itself, which starts off strong before crumbling...

Florence Pugh is one of our finest working actresses today, particularly because she knows how to use her face like she's not saving it for later. Pugh's face will contort into a grimace, a manic grin, or a full-throated sob all within the span of a minute — which is what makes her so perfectly suited to playing women on the verge of a breakdown.

It's also what makes Olivia Wilde's highly anticipated sophomore effort "Don't Worry Darling" perfectly tailored to Pugh, who stars in the psychological thriller as a woman happily living in a suburban idyll with her loving husband (Harry Styles) ... until she starts to feel that something is wrong. Pugh is unsurprisingly immaculate as the slowly unraveling housewife, but as much as "Don't Worry Darling" tries to match her stroke for stroke, both in Wilde's many, many stylistic flourishes and in Katie Silberman's high-minded script,...

Olivia Wilde’s second feature behind the camera, Don’t Worry Darling, will more likely be remembered for the offscreen intrigue — tabloid romance, lead actor replacement, a glaringly public serving of custody papers, a rumored clash between director and star — than it is for much else in this umpteenth Stepford Wives knockoff. That’s not to say it’s without sizeable pluses, chief among them a meaty lead role for the dependably compelling Florence Pugh, who hasn’t played a woman in this much peril since Midsommar. It also scores points for allowing Chris Pine to show what a devilishly charismatic villain he can be.

Update: Shia Labeouf has denied that he was fired from Don’t Worry, Darling by Olivia Wilde, instead saying that he chose to drop out of the project due to a lack of rehearsal time. He provided Variety with text, video, and email to back up his version of the story, and you can read about those Here. In the email he writes, “firing me never took place, Olivia. And while I fully understand the attractiveness of pushing that story because of the current social landscape, the social currency that brings. It is not the truth.”

Back in April of 2020, it was announced that Shia Labeouf (Fury) would be starring alongside Florence Pugh (Midsommar) in director Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry, Darling.

On Monday, Warner Bros. Pictures officially released the first full-length trailer for their upcoming psychological thriller “Don’t Worry Darling,” directed by Olivia Wilde who previously helmed “Booksmart.”

The film stars Florence Pugh as Alice, a housewife living with her husband Jack (Harry Styles), who’s employed by an enigmatic operation known as the Victory Project — which is expected to change the world as we know it.

Wilde directs from a screenplay penned by her “Booksmart” writer Katie Silberman, based on a story by Carey Van Dyke & Shane Van Dyke (“Chernobyl Diaries”) and Silberman. The film is produced by Wilde, Silberman, Miri Yoon, and Roy Lee, with Richard Brener, Celia Khong, Alex G. Scott, Catherine Hardwicke, Carey Van Dyke, and Shane Van Dyke executive producing.

CinemaCon is set to reevaluate its safety protocols following an incident on April 26 in which Olivia Wilde was served a mysterious manila envelope on stage at the Las Vegas event while presenting her new film “Don’t Worry Darling.” The envelope included the words “personal and confidential” on it. Wilde thought the file was a script when she opened it on stage. The incident occurred during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation.

“To protect the integrity of our studio partners and the talent, we will reevaluate our security protocols,” NATO managing director and head of CinemaCon Mitch Neuhauser told Variety. “We will act accordingly because it’s the right thing to do. We want to do the safe, proper thing.”

Variety has numerous eye witnesses who said the individual who served Wilde the envelope was credentialed by CinemaCon.

According to Deadline, the envelope contained custody documents being served to Wilde on behalf of Jason Sudeikis.
