People who were definitely not sexists and racists told her she’d never get her big break due to sexism and racism: “They told me my career would die mid-30s. First of all, they told me a Mexican is never going to make it because at the time … it was impossible for a Mexican to have a leading role in Hollywood. I was told so many times it couldn’t happen, and I almost believed them, but I fought it and I won.”

Lea Myren Is a Bloody Good Cinderella With a New ‘The Ugly Stepsister’ Poster [Exclusive]
Image
The Ugly Stepsister, the first horror feature from Emilie Blichfeldt, is set to arrive in theaters on April 18, and the film just got an exciting new look. Collider is thrilled to partner with distributors IFC Films and Shudder to help promote its upcoming premiere by releasing a new poster for the film showing what appears to be a ballet shoe dipped in blood stepping carefully onto the carpet. The upcoming film will see Blichfeldt make her directorial debut after starring in other projects such as Nr. 24 (Sjur Vatne Brean) and Kruppel 16 (Johannes Blumenthal). The Ugly Stepsister is billed as a gorgeously crafted, twisted take on the classic Cinderella story, and it earned strong reviews out of Sundance earlier this year, including from Collider’s own Therese Lacson, who scored the film an 8/10 in her review.

The Ugly Stepsister follows Elvira (Lea Myren) as she prepares to earn the prince...

‘Chucky’ Season 3: Jennifer Tilly Interview
Image
Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany in ‘Chucky’ season 3 (Photo by: Syfy)

Jennifer Tilly’s relationship with Chucky has lasted longer than most celebrity marriages. She was the Bride of Chucky in 1998. Thanks to 2004’s Seed of Chucky, Tilly has been playing herself in the series, too. And I’ve been talking to her since before Seed, and even moderated a Bride screening Q&a she attended.

So when I saw Tilly at the NBC Universal party for the Television Critics Association, Tilly saw my badge and said, “Oh, it’s Fred Topel, I have to talk to him.” Season three of Chucky left off with Tiffany (Tilly) in prison for the murders she committed in Jennifer Tilly’s body. Spoiler warning for past episodes of Chucky, and the twist of Fight Club if you’ve never seen that.

Chucky returns Wednesday at 10 p.m. on Syfy and USA.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding's Portokalos/Miller Family Tree Explained
Image
Greek culture, family dynamics, and love are central themes in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding trilogy. Toula's journey to embrace her heritage and marry Ian is at the heart of the immensely popular rom-com series. The films showcase not only the humorous side of Greek American life but also the deep bonds within the Portokalos family.

Much of My Big Fat Greek Wedding hinges on just how massive Toula Portokalos' (Nia Vardalos) brood is, which only makes the Portokalos/Miller family tree more than a tad complicated. Penned by Vardalos, the first entry in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie trilogy is based on the writer and star's one-woman 45-minute monologue workshop. After fellow Greek actor Rita Wilson and her husband, Tom Hanks, saw Vardalos' show, the Hollywood couple produced the 2002 film, which sees an aimless Toula falling in love with Ian Miller (John Corbett), all while coming into her own.

11 Surprising Movies That Were Massive Successes At The Box Office
Image
Despite not fitting the traditional criteria for box office success, smaller budget underdog films can still surprise with their performance, thanks to social media buzz, clever marketing, and good timing. My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a low-budget romantic comedy, became the highest-grossing film in its genre due to its endearing characters and family dynamics. Five Nights at Freddy's, despite receiving negative reviews from critics, became a quick box office success, earning over $255 million and setting a record opening for its production company.

Every now and then, there's a movie that comes as a surprise at the box office. Typically, movies with large box office numbers come from the action genre or are franchise films. These movies have larger budgets, dedicated fan bases, or well-known actors as their leads. Each of the top movies at the box office of this year includes one of these factors, if not multiple. However, audiences can be unpredictable.

Comedian Alex Edelman Gets Celeb Support at 'Just For Us' Opening Event in L.A.
Image
Alex Edelman‘s Broadway hit Just For Us is now playing in Los Angeles and he celebrated with a star-studded opening event over the weekend!

The 34-year-old rising star was joined by celeb pals at the opening night celebration on Saturday (November 11) at the Mark Taper Forum in downtown Los Angeles.

In attendance were Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater, Natalie Morales, Nia Vardalos, Bradley Whitford and Amy Landecker, and former NCIS: Los Angeles co-stars Barrett Foa and Daniela Ruah, among others.

Just For Us is written and performed by Edelman. In the wake of a string of anti-Semitic rhetoric pointed in his direction online, standup comic Edelman decides to go straight to the source; specifically, Queens, where he covertly attends a meeting of White Nationalists and comes face-to-face with the people behind the keyboards.

The play is running through November 26.

'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' Pulled Off a Makeover the Right Way
Image
Rom-coms in the early 2000s were much more than the love story at the core of the film, it was also about the so-called makeover. The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, and Miss Congeniality have raised us to think that a hairdo, wardrobe change, and swapping glasses for contacts is the way to go when it comes to success and getting the guy. Although it is admittedly fun to see how people can transform on the screen with the help of a glam team like Paolo's (Larry Miller), there is an underlying problem with the way that some makeover scenes play out on the big screen. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is among the rare few rom-coms that portray a female protagonist's evolution in looks done well. Through Toula Portokalos, Nia Vardalos was able to rewrite the makeover narrative, giving this concept an important new meaning.

Where to Watch and Stream ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’
Image
In 2002, actress and writer Nia Vardalos took the world by storm when her seemingly niche story about a Greek family became a critical and box office sensation. My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the story of a Greek woman’s marriage to a non-Greek American not only earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay but also earned $368 million at the box office. Nearly 14 years later, Vardalos and her cast returned for the sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, in which Vardalos’ Toula is forced to arrange a new wedding for her parents after they find out the priest who married them never signed their marriage certificate, and she must also contend with a daughter that wants more independence than she’s willing to give.

How To Watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 At Home
Image
By the time "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" hit theaters this year, a whole lot had happened between the popular franchise's second installment and its third. On screen, Nick (Louis Mandylor) got separated, Maria (Lainie Kazan) developed dementia, and Ian (John Corbett) retired. Offscreen, Andrea Martin gained new stardom playing demon-hunting nun Sister Andrea in the Paramount+ series "Evil," while the cast also lost one co-star -- Michael Constantine, who passed away in 2021.

The new movie's plot hinges around the aftermath of patriarch Gus' (Constantine) death, as Toula (Nia Vardalos) explains in the film's trailer that it was Gus' last wish that the family visit his childhood village in Greece. Thus, instead of a wedding, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" actually centers around a family reunion with all the cultural flair you'd expect from the Portokalos family. If you missed the movie in theaters, you won't have to...

Image
John Stamos appeared on “The Howard Stern Show” to promote his new memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” and revealed that his alcoholism got so bad around 2015 that he actually does not remember being on set to film his role in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” The actor appeared to forget he even booked a part in the film and was reminded the day after his 2015 arrest for driving under the influence that he had to go to Toronto, Canada, to film.

In previous interviews, Stamos has said his 2015 DUI arrest was a definitive moment in convincing him that it was time to get sober. But it didn’t happen instantly. He told Stern that after he got home from jail, he “drank another bottle of wine by myself.”

“I was just with Rita Wilson and Nia [Vardalos] in Greece and I realized, I forgot that the next day [after the arrest] they said,...

Chucky Season 3 TV Review
Image
Plot: In Chucky’s unending thirst for power, season 3 now sees Chucky ensconced with the most powerful family in the world — America’s First Family, inside the infamous walls of the White House. How did Chucky wind up here? What in God’s name does he want? And how can Jake, Devon, and Lexy possibly get to Chucky inside the world’s most secure building, all while balancing the pressures of romantic relationships and growing up? Meanwhile, Tiffany faces a looming crisis of her own as the police close in on her for “Jennifer Tilly’s” murderous rampage last season.

10 Hit Movies That Everyone Thought Would Bomb
Image
Hollywood is a slow-changing beast and relies largely on convention whenever it can. What worked before is bound to work again, and until a genre or movement is beaten into the ground at the box office, nothing new or different has much chance to thrive. Taking a chance just isn't attractive when hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake, and the more hedged bets, the better.

That also makes a ripe environment for surprise hits, as films written off as too different or too expensive suddenly turn into cultural events. Many of them benefit from good timing, but most of them become trailblazers, and their profits lead to a host of imitators. Below is a list of ten of the most prominent. All of them came seemingly out of nowhere, and all of them made a noticeable impact on film history.
