As Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale builds towards its series finale, Margaret Atwood, who wrote the 1985 novel on which the popular TV drama starring Elisabeth Moss is based, will be honored by The Hollywood Reporter at its Women in Entertainment Canada event on May 29 in Toronto.

The Canadian author, poet and activist will receive the Icon Award at this year’s second annual Wie Canada gala ceremony. Atwood wrote the Handmaid’s Tale book on which the Hulu TV series, from creator Bruce Miller, is based. Her follow-up 2019 novel, The Testaments, is currently being adapted as a sequel series.

The Handmaid’s Tale explores the complicated lives of handmaids who are sex slaves forced to give birth for infertile elite couples. The Sex Lives of College Girls star Amrit Kaur will receive the Breakthrough Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Canada gala in Toronto on May 29.

The second annual event will see Kaur receive the honor as a rising star in entertainment and media. Kaur is best known for playing Bela Malhotra on the Max comedy series from creators Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble.

She also starred in the coming-of-age dramedy The Queen of My Dreams from director Fawzia Mirza, playing a Pakistani Canadian girl struggling to bridge the chasm between herself and her mother. Named a rising star at the Toronto Film Festival in 2023, Kaur is a member of Gracemoon Arts Company, an ensemble of actors based in Italy, the U.S. and Canada and which opened an off-off Broadway theatre in New York City in July 2024.

The Ugly Stepsister, the first horror feature from Emilie Blichfeldt, is set to arrive in theaters on April 18, and the film just got an exciting new look. Collider is thrilled to partner with distributors IFC Films and Shudder to help promote its upcoming premiere by releasing a new poster for the film showing what appears to be a ballet shoe dipped in blood stepping carefully onto the carpet. The upcoming film will see Blichfeldt make her directorial debut after starring in other projects such as Nr. 24 (Sjur Vatne Brean) and Kruppel 16 (Johannes Blumenthal). The Ugly Stepsister is billed as a gorgeously crafted, twisted take on the classic Cinderella story, and it earned strong reviews out of Sundance earlier this year, including from Collider’s own Therese Lacson, who scored the film an 8/10 in her review.

Tantoo Cardinal will receive the Equity in Entertainment Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Canada gala in Toronto on May 29.

The second annual event, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, will see Cardinal, who is of Cree and Métis heritage, receive the honor presented in partnership with the Indigenous Screen Office. Over a 50-year career, Cardinal has film credits that include Dances With Wolves, Killers of the Flower Moon, Legends of the Fall, Black Robe and Hold the Dark.

Her TV series credits include Longmire, Echo, Stumptown, Three Pines, Godless, Blackstone, Moccasin Flats and North of 60. Cardinal received the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor, in 2009.

The Equity in Entertainment Award, which honors those who reflect and amplify the voices and stories of underrepresented communities, was created in 2016 by The Hollywood Reporter as part of its Women in Entertainment annual event in Los Angeles.

Guests at the intimate gathering included fellow Only Murders alums Martin Short, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Jesse Williams, as well as Nia Vardalos, Jeremy Piven, Jason Bateman, Annette Bening, Pom Klementieff and Thora Birch, among others.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has announced its winter programming, featuring a range of new film series, screenings, public events and educational programs. Highlights include an onstage conversation with singer-songwriter Diane Warren, followed by a screening of “Armageddon,” and a live performance by Warren herself. The Hollywood Reporter will bring its Women in Entertainment brand back for a second annual event in Canada, it was announced Thursday.

The upcoming Women in Entertainment Canada summit, to take place May 29 in Toronto, will bring together the Canadian industry across TV, film and music to celebrate and recognize the achievements of women driving the industry forward.

The event’s return follows a successful first-ever Wie Canada summit on May 30 that was attended by iconic Canadian entertainers in the TV, film and music fields like Lilly Singh, Nia Vardalos, Devery Jacobs, Kim Cattrall, Catherine Reitman and Jully Black.

The Women's Cancer Research Fund has announced their An Unforgettable Evening event will take place on April 10 in Beverly Hills.

An Unforgettable Evening is Wcrf’s flagship fundraising event featuring extraordinary honorees and tributes to cancer survivors and the memory of those impacted by cancer. For 25 years, this event has brought together leaders in entertainment, cancer research and corporate philanthropy to raise funds for pioneering cancer research conducted at leading medical and academic institutions in California and across the U.S.

The gala will return to the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, with proceeds from the event benefiting the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, a program of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (Bcrf). Wcrf was founded by Quinn Ezralow, Kelly Chapman Meyer, Jamie Tisch and the late Anne Douglas, Renette Ezralow and Marion Laurie.

Greek culture, family dynamics, and love are central themes in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding trilogy. Toula's journey to embrace her heritage and marry Ian is at the heart of the immensely popular rom-com series. The films showcase not only the humorous side of Greek American life but also the deep bonds within the Portokalos family.

Much of My Big Fat Greek Wedding hinges on just how massive Toula Portokalos' (Nia Vardalos) brood is, which only makes the Portokalos/Miller family tree more than a tad complicated. Penned by Vardalos, the first entry in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie trilogy is based on the writer and star's one-woman 45-minute monologue workshop. Best Actress in a Leading Role Emma Stone in “Poor Things”

Weekly Commentary: In best actress, the competition is as fierce as it gets. Emma Stone’s transformation into a woman with a child’s brain surgically implanted in Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi comedy “Poor Things” has garnered substantial support.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” took home multiple awards at the 14th Music Supervisors Guild Awards, held March 3 at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre. The event celebrates outstanding achievement in the craft of music supervision, acknowledging work across film, television, documentaries, advertising, trailers and video games.

As AMPAS voting enters its final days, the Academy Award winner today threw her support behind Ava DuVernay’s Origin in what looks to be doubling down by any other name.

First of all, Jolie held an invite-only get together at her home Sunday to around two dozen guests With DuVernay and Origin star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in attendance, Jolie spoke passionately about the film, sources say.

Multiple Emmy and Tony winner Debbie Allen and Frances Fisher (Actors branch) were there too. Old Guard 2 director Victoria Mahoney and Professor Marston and the Wonder Women helmer Angela Robinson (Directors branch) and Lost in Translation costume designer Nancy Steiner (Costume Designers branch) were also present, I’ve learned.
