iLe Taps Ivy Queen to Help Topple the Patriarchy in Her Latest Video "Algo Bonito"
Image
There's a scene in the music video for iLe and Ivy Queen's single "Algo Bonito," released on Mar. 2, where iLe stares down three anonymous men in a western standoff fashion. Dressed in all black, her hands holstered on her hips, she dispatches all three con solo una mirada. It's become clear that, while iLe's music has always been a medium for her progressive and feminist values, the track off her latest album "Nacarile" isn't pulling any punches. As she tells Popsugar, "Las mujeres están hartas." Translation: women are fed up.

According to the singer, it was this patriarchal frustration that became the seed from which "Algo Bonito" would sprout. "I was just feeling frustrated with the day-to-day of being a woman," iLe says. "You know there were so many things happening that just had me feeling this sense of rage. The concept for the song really came out of wanting to vocalize that.

Venice: "Killer Joe", Last Days & Critical "Carnage" Consensus
[Editor's Note: Manolis has been reporting for The Film Experience and the Greek site Cinema News. We thank him for that. You can read all the Venice reports here. - Nathaniel R]

Emile Hirsch worshipping at Venice's red carpet

This is my last report from Venice which I'm writing from Athens. During my last two festival days I caught five films ranging from great surprises to total mediocrities.

Quando La Notte

This little Italian romantic drama about a troubled young mother and a mountaineer would have benefited immensely by trimming 15 minutes from its running time. The last reel or so of the film is totally unnecessary and unfortunately shows of Cristina Comencini’s weaknesses as both screenwriter and director. The two stars, Filippo Timi and Claudia Pandolfi give very good performances, but they weren't enough to save the film from the Italian critics who just massacred it. Interesting subject matter, mediocre film.

The Exchange

The Israeli film within the Competition section started off nicely. Eran Kolirin's follow up to the much praised The Band's Visit watches an everyman watching his life...

World Film Report Spain: Iglesia's Balada Triste de Trompeta and Carlos Iglesias' Ispansi
Spain Film Scene: Local Alex de la Iglesia's ("The Oxford Murders", "Day of the Beast") latest film "Balada Triste de Trompeta" finished principal photography this month (see pic of director above). This co-production with France's production company La fabrique 2, tells the story of two heavily scarred clowns, Javier and Sergio, that bloodily compete for the love of Natalia, the trapezist. Set in 1973, during the last days of the dictatorship of Franco, the director himself describes the film as a "grotesque tragedy of comedic horror." The film stars T.V comedian Carlos Areces, fresh from the success of its first film "Spanish Movie" and Antonio de la Torre, the critically acclaimed actor of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo's "Gordos", also starring are Sancho Gracia, Santiago Segura and Terele Pávez, all veterans from de la Iglesia's previous films. The film is set to be released at the end of 2010. After his hit debut "1 franco,...
