- Members have included Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Walter De Maria, Angus MacLise, Maureen Tucker, Nico, Doug Yule, Bill Yule, Walter Powers, Willie Alexander, Rob Norris and Ian Paice (Deep Purple's drummer borrowed for the 1973 album, "Squeeze"). Dancers Gerard Malanga and Mary Woronov were also considered unofficial members during their run as interpretive dancers for the band in 1966-1967.

- The band was voted the 19th Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Artist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
- First actual concert was held on 11 December 1965 at Summit High School in Summit, New Jersey. They were the opening act for the garage rock group the Myddle Class. This is when Moe Tucker joined the band. They played three songs that had half the students run for the doors. One student who stayed was Rob Norris who later was a member of The Bongos.
