Venice is first out of the gate by launching its 78th edition Wednesday, September 1. The lineup for Venice 2021 has now been revealed.

As previously announced, Pedro Almodóvar will kick off the 2021 Venice Film Festival with the world premiere of his new drama “Parallel Mothers.” The film will debut in competition and vie for the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion. “Parallel Mothers” is written and directed by Almodóvar, and stars both regular and new collaborators, including Penélope Cruz, Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Julieta Serrano,...

Somewhere stars Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Benicio Del Toro, Michelle Monaghan, Laura Chiatti, Simona Ventura among others.

Highlights of the Festival include Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, Richard J. Lewis’ Barney’s Version, Julian Schnabel’s Miral, and Tom Tykwer’s Drei. What’s also cool about this list is that we see the runtimes of each of the films. However, it’s not unusual for a film to undergo changes between a festival and its general release.

67th Venice Film Festival: Gallo, Coppola, Reichardt Selected in the Main Comp
Knowing Quentin Tarantino's appreciation for films that are "out there": if I had to do some really early predictions here, I'd say that the Gold and Silver Lion front-runners are in Alex De La Iglesia's bizarro fantasy film A Sad Trumpet Ballad, Pablo Larrain's Post Mortem or Athina Rachel Tsangari's Attenberg (a filmmaker we recently profiled in our American New Wave 25 series - she spent more than a decade in Austin's film scene). I'd also add put Abdellatif Kechiche's Black Venus high up on any awards list, especially the Lido - it's a film I've been pegging for Venice since the film went into production. Added to Aronofsky's Black Swan, the U.S is repped by Monte Hellman and his comeback film, Road to Nowhere, Julian Schnabel's Miral, indie female helmers Kelly Reichardt (Meek's Cutoff) and Sofia Coppola (Meek’s Cutoff), and the Coppola-...

Videocracy (Lorber Films)
By Harvey Karten - Early this year, the United State Supreme Court-which has become more of a political body than a neutral, judicial one-ruled that corporations can spend all the money they desire to promote their candidates during our usual protracted campaigns. The black-robed body overturned a bevy of precedents that limited their contributions, which had been a wise policy to prevent Big Money from swamping independent voices and presumably third-party candidates. In Italy, the system takes this reasoning a couple of steps further. The prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, doesn't have to spend money to get his face on TV and in the print media. He owns most of them! Yes, at least seventy percent of TV stations and something like ninety percent of the magazines are actually controlled by the prime minister, who spent the last thirty years building up an empire that even Rupert Murdoch could envy. John Malkovich to Star as Vulture in "Spider-Man 4?"
The fate of the fourth installment of the "Spider-Man" franchise is still up in the air (it's uncertain if the film will open in its targeted release date of May 5, 2011) but John Halkovich has confirmed that he's up for the role of the big bad Vulture according to our friends at superherohype.com.

Malkovich made an appearance in an Italian sports show called "Quelli Che il Calcio" and revealed the Vulture news.

"When conductor Simona Ventura asked him about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not only didn't deny his involvement, but confirmed that he's waiting for the final script to be sent to him, and that the movie has been delayed. He also hopes that shooting will begin as soon as possible."

Apparently, Malkovich was Sam Raimi's alternate choice to play the Green Goblin in the first "Spider-Man" film. There's no confirmation from Sony yet regarding Malkovich's participation,...

John Malkovich Confirms Role as Vulture in Spider-Man 4
The rumors have been flying left and right as to who Sam Raimi has lined up for Spider-Man 4, and it looks like we finally have some confirmation for at least one of the roles.

The Italian movie site Bad Taste writes that John Malkovich confirmed his role as The Vulture while appearing as a guest on an Italian TV show. The Vulture's alter ego is Adrian Toomes, an engineer who devises an electromagnetic suit that gives him enhanced strength and the ability to fly. The suit allows him to compete with the much younger, more naturally agile Spider-Man.

This is what Bad Taste had to say in a translated comment:

When host Simona Ventura asked Malkovich about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not only didn't deny his involvement, but confirmed that he's waiting for the final script to be sent to him, and that the movie has been delayed.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Malkovich Confirms Spidey Vulture Rumour
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Even as Spider-Man 4 continues to flail in production limbo (it's been officially delayed), word arrives that one of the more likely rumours - John Malkovich playing villain The Vulture - has been confirmed by the man himself.Talking on, of all places, Italian sports show Quelli Che il Calcio, Malkovich was asked directly about the news he'd be showing up in the new Spidey outing.Time to fire up the Translato5000 to reveal what he said: "When conductor Simona Ventura asked him about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not only didn't deny his involvement, but confirmed that he's waiting for the final script to be sent to him, and that the movie has been delayed. He also hopes that shooting will begin as soon as possible."He might be in for a bit of a wait, since Sony and Sam Raimi seem to be wrangling about...

Malkovich Seemingly Confirms He'll Be Vulture in Spider-Man 4
It's odd to report this when we already know that Spider-Man 4 is officially on hold until further notice, but then again, this is a pretty good story and it will probably make a few people upset. Our Italian friends at BadTaste.it sent an email over this morning informing us that actor John Malkovich had appeared on an Italian TV show called "Quelli Che il Calcio" and spoke about his involvement in Spider-Man 4. Nearly a month ago, it was discovered that Malkovich was Sam Raimi's top choice for the role of the villain Vulture. While we don't have a complete transcript from the show, it sounds like he did confirm that he's on-board. "When conductor Simona Ventura asked him about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not only didn't deny his involvement, but confermed [sic] that he's waiting for the final script to be sent to him,...

John Malkovich Confirms Vulture in Spider-Man 4?
With the mess that is the delay and behind-the-scenes dispute over villains between Sony and director Sam Raimi, it looks like we just may have a positive piece of news pushing the film in the right direction from a development standpoint. That is, the direction that the film may be made on time…

While appearing on the Italian sports show Quelli Che il Calcio, Malkovich spoke about his involvement and confirmed that he is set to play the villain known as the Vulture in Spider-Man 4.

There’s no word on the other rumor about Anne Hathaway playing Vulturess and I think most of us hope it stays that way.

Thanks to the folks at BadTaste.it for sharing the news and info with us, we have a little summary of what was said.

“When conductor Simona Ventura asked him about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not...

Malkovich Confirms Vulture Role in Spider-Man 4
With all the rumors and speculation about Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 , whether or not it will make its scheduled May 5, 2011 release date and why it has run into production problems, it's come out in the wash that John Malkovich was indeed up for the role of the Vulture, Raimi's choice of villain for the fourth movie, which was first broken by Movieline a month ago. Malkovich was interviewed by an Italian sports show called "Quelli Che il Calcio" and he was asked not only about whether he had been approached to play the Vulture but also about the production delays. The fine folks at the Italian web site Bad Taste have graciously provided an English summation of what was said on the show: "When conductor Simona Ventura asked him about his role of Vulture in...

John Malkovich Verifies His Role as Vulture in 'Spider-Man 4'
Back in early December we brought you a story in which Movieline had reported John Malkovich was rumored to be playing the role of The Vulture in Spider-Man 4. It now turns out that the rumor was true, and that the actor was indeed up for the role.

During a recent interview with the Italian sports show Quelli Che il Calcio, Malkovich talked not only about being approached to play The Vulture, but also about the production delays on Spider-Man 4, which we've reported about extensively here.

The Italian web site Bad Taste went to the trouble of translating the interview into English for the rest of us, so our hats off to them for the effort. Here's what Malkovich had to say:

"When conductor Simona Ventura asked him about his role of Vulture in the movie, he not only didn't deny his involvement, but confirmed that he's waiting for...
