Anne Catharina Schulerud was born in Rena, Norway, February 15th 1920. Her parents were Mentz Schulerud (1877 - 1931) and Aagot Schulerud (1875 - 1957). She moved to Oslo in the late 1930s, and pursued a career in acting. Her debut as an author came in 1953, with "Ole Aleksande Filibom-bom-bom" (English title: "Ollie Alexander Tiddly-Om-Pom-Pom" (USA)). She became a household name in the radio show "Barnetimen for de minste", with a long series of books for children of all ages. She also caused scandals when she revealed for her child listeners that babies were inside their mothers tummies before they were born. She received numerous threats, and replied with a "Children's radio show for the adults" where she explained how children were born. Anne Cath. Vestly wrote two autobiographies, and when she was 83 years old she had her debut as an author for adults.

The last years of her life Anne Cath Vestly lived in an institution for dementia patients. She suffered from Altzheimer's disease, and had no verbal language.
