  • Playwright, poet, actor, stage and screen director, who worked in Germany before moving to Hollywood in the late 1920's. Returned to Europe in the 1950's to direct for the theatre.

  • His only children were 3 sons with Salka Viertel - Hans, Peter Viertel and Thomas (Peter is a novelist and screenwriter and is married to Deborah Kerr). Before Salka, Berthold was married to Grete Viertel from whom he was divorced in 1918. After he and Salka divorced, he married Elisabeth "Liesel" Newmann to whom he was married when he died.

  • He published his poetry book "Die Bahn" in 1921, it followed other works like "Die Bachantinnen des Euripides", "Das Gnadenbrot" and "Die schöne Seele".
  • The director and author Berthold Viertel began his career as a stage director in Dresden, it followed other engagements in Berlin, Berlin, Zurich and finally also in England and the USA.
  • At the beginning of the 30s he returned to Germany again where he directed the movie "Die heilige Flamme" (1931) before he emigrated to the USA after the rise of the National Socialists.
  • Berthold Viertel was among others married with the actress Elisabeth Neumann. His son Peter Viertel became a well-known screenwriter.
  • He entered the film business in 1923 as a movie director.
  • When he went to England and the USA he continued to shoot movies as a director like "Seven Faces" (1929), The Passing of the Third Floor Back" (1935) and "Rhodes of Africa" (1936).
