Martin McDonagh’s multiple Oscar-nominated The Banshees Of Inisherin shot on location in the west of Ireland and took awards for best film, while Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon won IFTAs for supporting actor and actress.

Frank Berry’s direct provision drama Aisha also scored several major awards in the ceremony at Dublin Royal Convention Centre.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” capped off its run with the guilds by taking home a trophy at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards on Thursday. It had previously prevailed with eight of the other nine guilds at which it contended. It lost out only with the sound editors.

Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — did win over the sound editors. Those victories are among their overall hauls of four apiece. “Elvis” also prevailed with the cinematographers, costume designers, and makeup artists/hairstylists while “Top Gun: Maverick” scored with the actors, film editors and sound mixers.

It’s now a race between “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” following their wins for Theatrical Drama and Comedy at the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards (March 5 at UCLA’s Royce Hall). They defeated the other three Oscar nominees: “Elvis” and “TÁR” for Drama and “The Banshees of Inisherin” for Comedy.

Best Picture Oscar favorite “Eeaao” defies categorization as a multiverse sci-fi adventure wrapped around a compelling family drama and comedy.

“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”

Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”

Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.

Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.

American Cinema Editors handed out its 73rd Eddie Awards on Sunday, with Top Gun: Maverick editor Eddie Hamilton and Everything Everywhere All at Once editor Paul Rogers collecting trophies for best edited dramatic feature and comedy feature, respectively.

Everything Everywhere’s Rogers thanked mentors, friends and family, including the Daniels, remembering cutting the movie during lockdown. He also urged diversity, saying, “We can choose what stories we get to tell.” Hamilton wasn’t in attendance and colleagues accepted, reading thanks to those including Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie.

Elvis — nominated for eight Oscars including best picture — offers a bold look at the life of Elvis Presley while capturing the zeitgeist of the period.

But Jonathan Redmond and Matt Villa, Oscar-nominated editors and longtime collaborators of Baz Luhrmann, say the director was adamant that his movie, starring Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, would not be a conventional biographical film.

Luhrmann crafted a film that combines electrifying performances, drama and archival material while using Elvis’ manager, Colonel Parker (Tom Hanks), as a narrative device to tell the story. The editors say the experience was shaped by starting with 650 hours of principal photography and another 350 hours of archival material. Each performance was treated as an action set piece that told a different part of Presley’s story while showcasing the flamboyant singer; for instance, the film features Presley’s 1954 debut Louisiana Hayride performance, which helped launch his career.

The Bafta nominations for 2023 have been announced – and a huge record has been matched.

Leading the pack with 14 nominations is Netflix’s German-language All Quiet on the Western Front, which has equalled a record previously held by Ang Lee’s 2001 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

With 14 nods each, both films are the two international films to have received the most nominations in Bafta history.

Following close behind with 10 nominations each are The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Other films battling it out for the top awards include Elvis, Tár and British film Aftersun.

Austin Butler’s agent told him he would need to gain weight to play the older version of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” “I heard that Ryan Gosling when he was going to do ‘The Lovely Bones,’ had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it,” Butler tells Variety. “So I started doing that. I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds. It’s fun for a week, and then you feel awful about yourself. But we were planning on shooting chronologically in the beginning. That quickly went out the window with Covid. It was just impossible.”

On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Butler sits down to discuss receiving his first Oscar nomination for best actor. He also discusses renting an apartment after the Warner Bros. corporate cards were shut off following the Covid shutdown.

Fun fact: The last time a Best Picture Oscar winner also scored a craft victory was Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” which took home awards for Paul Austerberry’s production design and Alexandre Desplat’s score in 2018. Which means that Best Picture winners “Coda” (no craft nominations) “Nomadland”, “Parasite”, and “Green Book” (editing) all left empty-handed as far as craft wins.

But look for the five-year craft drought to end if frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” wins Best Picture. Starting with “Gravity” (2013) and continuing to last year...

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) and “Dune” (2022) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). The Academy has released the list of nominations for the 2023 Oscars. Everything Everywhere All at Once led the pack this year with 11 nominations, followed closely by the war drama All Quiet On The Western Front and dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin.

A few actors who made big comebacks this year received nominations for their roles, including Brendan Fraser for The Whale and former child actor Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Also in the running for best actor are Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Billy Nighy and Paul Mescal, all first-time nominees. In a surprising nod to indie film To Leslie, Andrea Riseborough scored a nomination for best actress. The race also includes Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh.

Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the Oscars, making his third appearance as emcee after his previous hosting stints in 2017 and 2018.

Nominees have been announced for the 95th Oscars and members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences fell in line with most critics groups, awarding Everything Everywhere All At Once the most nominations with 11. The 2023 Academy Awards also recognized All Quiet on the Western Front with nine nominations, making it the eighth feature film to score nominations in both the Best Picture and Best International Feature categories.

The Banshees of Inisherin also picked up nine nominations, including the first-ever Oscar nominations for Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon. Elvis earned eight nominations, with Austin Butler picking up his first Oscar nomination for channeling the King of Rock and Roll.

The 2023 Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday, January 24 live from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Riz Ahmed, who won the Oscar last year for Best Live Action Short Film for “The Long Goodbye” and was nominated for lead for “Sound of Metal” in 2021, and “M3gan” star and executive producer Allison Williams read off the names of the nominees in all 23 categories.

The announcement aired live on ABC during “Good Morning America” and was live-streamed online via the Oscars website, accessible at both Oscar.com and Oscars.org. In addition to the film academy’s main website, the nominations streamed live online via Twitter, Facebook and YouTube as well as over Disney+, Hulu Live TV, ABC News Live and YouTubeTV.

The 95th Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 12, with the ceremony set to kick off from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood at 5 p.m. Pt /8 p.

The nominees for the upcoming 2023 British Academy Film Awards have been revealed.

Leading with 14 nominations, among the 25 categories, is Edward Berger’s adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front”. Despite the First World War drama’s lack of fanfare since its Netflix release last October, the film has garnered notable attention as awards season picks up.

Following “All Quiet” is Martin McDonagh’s comedy-drama “The Banshees of Inisherin” with 10 nominations, including nods to leading star Colin Farrell. The film is tied with the hit indie flick “Everything Everywhere All At Once”.

This year’s BAFTA Awards, hosted by Richard E. Grant at London’s Royal Festival Hall, airs Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. GMT. The annual awards ceremony recognizes and honours some of the best British and international film contributions of the year.

Awards voters love a transformation: Gary Oldman in “Darkest Hour,” Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and Christian Bale in “Vice” are just some of the recent winners who disappeared into their roles. And the recent Makeup and Hairstylists Guild (Muahs) nominations seem to be an indicator of the trend continuing this year.

Among this year’s Muahs nominees are “The Batman,” which, despite being released in March 2022, has shown up on numerous guild honors lists including American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), Motion Picture of Sound Editors (Mpse).

The transformation in the film belongs to Colin Farrell, who plays Oswald Cobblepot, the scarred and pudgy midlevel Gotham City gangster with the (unwelcome) nickname of “the Penguin.”

The 28th Critics Choice Awards took place at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday night (15 January).

The star-studded event was hosted by Chelsea Handler, taking over from actor Taye Diggs who had hosted the past four years of the awards ceremony.

The night’s special awards were presented to Janelle Monáe, who received the #SeeHer award, while Jeff Bridges was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Some of the night’s biggest winners were Angela Bassett, Brendan Fraser, and Cate Blanchett, who won Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, and Best Actress awards respectively.

The 28th annual Critics Choice Awards were handed out Sunday night.

Everything Everywhere All at Once was named best picture; best director and best original screenplay for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert; best editing for Paul Rogers; and best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan. Heading into the ceremony, the film led with 14 noms.

On the TV side, nominee-leading Abbott Elementary (with six noms) was named best comedy series. Better Call Saul won best drama series, while The Dropout was named best limited series.

Janelle Monáe was honored with the SeeHer Award, presented by Kate Hudson, while Jeff Bridges received the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award from John Goodman at this year’s show, which took place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

For two and a half hours, “Elvis” is dominated by Austin Butler’s performance as the iconic singer-songwriter. But the ending to filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s splashy biopic hard cuts to the real Elvis Presley in one of his last performances ever, and for Luhrmann and editor Jonathan Redmond, this “gut punch” was the exact right way to conclude this epic story.

Back in 2018, the editing process for the film began – before even a frame of the movie had been shot. Indeed, Luhrmann and his team started by putting together a reel using existing materials to give a sense of what “Elvis” would feel like. And it was in thumbing through that archival material that they hit upon the footage that would close out the film.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” was just the right musical spectacle to lure moviegoers back to theaters: a delirious, non-stop roller coaster ride capturing the King of Rock’s rebellious career along with his enduring cultural impact. The result was a record 151 million domestic gross for the director, paving the way for potential Oscar glory. The charismatic Austin Butler — who became one with Elvis — leads the way as the Best Actor favorite, with a likely Best Picture nomination as well.

That could translate into several craft nominations, too. Elvis won 11 awards including best film at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTAs), held over two days (December 5 and 7) in Sydney.

Director Baz Luhrmann and actor Austin Butler were among the Elvis winners, along with cinematographer Mandy Walker – who is reportedly the first woman to win the category at the AACTAs.

Catherine Martin won for costume design and for being part of the production design team. Like actor Chris Hemsworth, she was honoured more generally for her career and her impact on the Australian industry.

Whatever you think of Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" it's hard to fault Austin Butler's performance in the lead role. The dedicated actor spent two years studying the King to the extent that even in the press run for the movie he seemed to retain much of the singer's characteristic drawl. He's even addressed this in interviews, stating that it's hard not to be forever changed by getting that close to such a uniquely iconic figure, and telling Yahoo! Australia: "It was so habitual, at the end you kinda don't remember what your natural voice is."

But it wasn't just Elvis' mannerisms and speaking voice that Butler absorbed. The actor, who's sung and played guitar since he was 13, also lent his singing voice to much of the movie.
