Here's why we need another series like Star Trek: Lower Decks
Image
The beauty of Star Trek has long been in its ability to inspire and bring people together. Since the very beginning, it has been a vehicle for inclusion and diversity in a way that was at times controversial, but also groundbreaking. So when Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered on Paramount Plus, there were two ways this could have gone: very bad or very good.

Luckily for all of us, Lower Decks was a hit. There was something so refreshing about this animated series as it focused more on the rarely seen crew members. These are the crew members that keep these massive space shifts working, but that we either rarely see, never get to know or are cannon fodder for the movies and TV shows that came before it.

One of the biggest reasons that Lower Decks really worked was because it did not take itself too seriously. We had serious moments,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds & Lower Decks Crossover's Live-Action Boimler Figure Up for Pre-Order
Image
Star Trek: Lower Decksmay have ended its five-year run, but collectors will soon be able to own a version of two of the most famous “Lower Deckers.” Per StarTrek.com, collectible figure company Exo-6, known for their museum-grade 1/6-scale figures, has crafted both a Bradward Boimler and a Beckett Mariner figure, based on their live-action characters in the crossover episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 2 episode “Those Old Scientists.”

In Season 2, Episode 7 of Strange New Worlds, Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) are thrust through a time portal back to the 23rd century and end up aboard Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) U.S.S. Enterprise, where they try desperately not to mess up the timeline. Star Trek alum Jonathan Frakes directed the episode.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Cast Is Reuniting On One Of TV's Funniest Shows
Image
We're still not over the end of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and to be quite honest, we might never be. Every "Star Trek" fan loves "Lower Decks." Well, at least all of us here at /Film do -- I can't speak for any of the contrarian weirdos out there who hate fun or are somehow allergic to animation. Fans have become extremely attached to the cast, and their voices now rattle around in the dark recesses of our brains. Whenever I do a rewatch of "Craig of the Creek" (another show coming to an end too soon), I feel my heart break a little whenever Noël Wells' voice as Kelsey creeps into sounding like her "Lower Decks" character, Ensign D'Vana Tendi. I'm just not ready to admit that it's really over.

Fortunately, it's not like all of these beloved performers are being launched out of an airlock and forced to...

10 Most Underrated Movies Of 2024 That You Need To See
Image
2024 was a great year for movies, with blockbusters and critical darlings galore, but even then, there were a number of films that went under the radar last year, despite being some of the best movies of the year. Countless successful movies were released in 2024, but there are a special few that likely stuck out in audiences' minds. Some include Wicked, Gladiator II, Challengers, Dune: Part Two, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and more. Of course, these movies deserve all the praise, yet a vast array of hidden gems also premiered in 2024, and they deserve way more attention.

A 2024 movie that is considered underrated is one that was very well-received, and deserves a place among the best movies of the year, but got little recognition in the mainstream. Oftentimes, these are smaller, indie movies that did not benefit from massive budgets or incredible casts. They probably lacked solid marketing as well. Despite having engaging premises and strong reputations,...

‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Goes Out with Some Good Ol’ Fashioned Klingon Warfare — Watch Exclusive Clip
Image
In a sea of science fiction series that take themselves far too seriously, “Star Trek Lower Decks” has been a sweet and funny balm, a loving parody of the iconic speculative fiction universe that celebrates and pisses on its history in equal measure. Like all good sitcoms, however, “Lower Decks” is coming to an end, and the finale promises to be…maybe, possibly, moderately serious?

The animated series will premiere the finale to its fifth and final season Thursday, December 19, on Paramount+. The episode, titled “The New Next Generation” in reference to the beloved ’80s-’90s “Star Trek” series starring Patrick Stewart, will have an extended running time, and bring back a few characters from the show’s past. Among them are Klingon brothers, Malor (voiced by Sam Witwer) and Ma’ah (Jon Curry), first seen in a previous Season 5 episode. In an exclusive clip shared with IndieWire, the duo...

'Here to Serve Starfleet': Jerry O'Connell Loves Star Trek: Lower Decks Fans
Image
Star Trek: Lower Decks has taken time in its fifth season to spotlight the senior leadership on the USS Cerritos, including the ship's first officer, Commander Jack Ransom. Played with gleeful aplomb by Jerry O'Connell, Ransom quietly proves he's not as charmingly aloof as he appears, particularly when it comes to subtly mentoring the junior officers. There are multitudes of the hyper alpha male that is Jack Ransom and O'Connell has only scratched the surface of the character.

In an interview with Cbr, O'Connell shares what it's like being part of the Star Trek family in more ways than one. He also reflects on playing Ransom for five seasons and reveals his hopes to reprise the role, including potentially in a live-action capacity. Plus, he talks about his respect for the Star Trek fan base -- and how he keeps up with what they're saying.

'My Favorite Ransom Scene': Star Trek: Lower Decks Star Teases a Satisfying Series Finale
Image
Jerry O'Connell thinks Star Trek: Lower Decks saved the best Jack Ransom moment for last.

"My favorite Ransom scene comes in the finale. It's good, and people are going to be satisfied with it," O'Connell told Bleeding Cool ahead of Lower Decks' penultimate episode's release, with the animated Trek show concluding its five-season run on December 19. While he didn't reveal too much about its plot, O'Connell described the series finale as "a bridge episode that takes place on the bridge... getting out of the musty, moldy lower decks and coming up to the bridge where all the action is, finally! [We're] giving the people what they want, no more hanging out in those…I got to tell you, I've been on the lower decks. Everybody smells like feet down there. You don't want to be hanging out down there. Come up to the bridge! It smells great! We have candles lit.

Star Trek Lower Decks Just Reversed Its Biggest Running Gag
Image
The following reveals spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 8, "Upper Decks," now streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Lower Decks hinges on a single premise: that the lives of the background figures in the rest of Star Trek are as rich and fulfilling as the leads. The franchise stresses the glamorous side of the final frontier so often that the idea of worker bees quietly doing their jobs behind the scenes becomes a source of humor in and of itself. The idea goes back to the earliest episodes of Star Trek, and the threads of Lower Decks can be traced through the history of the franchise.

With only two more episodes left in its five-season run, the series has taken the opportunity to acknowledge that tradition as only it can. Season 5, Episode 8, "Upper Decks" covers the Cerritos' senior officers in the exact way that previous Star Trek shows cover their lower deckers.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 Celebrates Its (Actual) Most Underappreciated Crew
Image
Warning: Set phasers to spoilers, because this article discusses plot details from the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."

Nearly five full seasons into "Lower Decks" and Trekkies might have noticed that some of its most integral characters have remained a bit of an enigma so far. No, we're not talking about our usual crew, all of whom have transformed from some of the franchise's biggest upstarts when the animated series first debuted to fan-favorite additions to the canon. We're not even referring to the simmering rivalry between the delta shift and beta shift on the USS Cerritos, which was first introduced way back in the season 1 episode "Terminal Provocations." No, this team has been hiding in plain sight all along, going about their duty on a daily basis while rarely ever receiving the credit they deserve. And, in an episode that couldn't possibly be more fitting for the show's final season,...

Star Trek Just Cleverly Reversed The Tng Episode That Inspired Lower Decks
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 8 - "Upper Decks"Star Trek: Lower Decks just cleverly reversed the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode that inspired it. 'Both Feared and Respected': Gillian Vigman on Star Trek: Lower Decks' T'Ana

Every Star Trek series needs a trusty doctor, and Star Trek: Lower Decks has Chief Medical Officer T'Ana to keep its crew healthy. T'Ana is a Caitian who may seem gruff and surly at first glance, but genuinely cares about her crewmates -- especially her lover Shaxs. And as wacky Lower Decks can get, it's that sincerity within the USS Cerritos crew, including T'Ana, that gives the show its immense heart.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Star Reflects on 'Really Emotional' Meeting With Inspiration Nichelle Nichols
Image
One of the stars of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Dawnn Lewis, who voices Captain Carol Freeman, of the U.S.S. Cerritos took inspiration from another StarTrek actor, the late Nichelle Nichols, who played the iconic Nyota Uhura on Star Trek in the 1960s. Lewis told CinemaBlend that what she saw being portrayed in the original series, the respect and collaboration, wasnt something she was used to seeing as a child.

I saw myself in the show in Nichelle Nichols and saw the possibility of all kinds of different people from all kinds of different places working together, respecting each other, collaborating with each other. And thats not what I would see when I would watch any other show or particularly the news growing up in, in the sixties, Lewis said.

Nichols played Uhura in all three seasons of Star Trek and the original series' Star Trek feature films. Lewis...

Star Trek Reveals A Terrible Fate Voyager Avoided
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Lower Decks, season 5, episode 3, "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel."Star Trek: Voyager had some bizarre storylines, and Star Trek: Lower Decks' final season shows a fate that the crew of the USS Voyager could easily have experienced. Every season of Star Trek: Voyager had at least one story that felt like it was something out of a fever dream, and while that wasn't unique to Voyager, it was the show that delved deep into the bag of weirdness more often than other franchise projects. Although Star Trek: Lower Decks has its fair share of unusual goings-on, the fact it's essentially a canonical Star Trek parody gives it more leeway.

With more members of the Star Trek: Voyager cast starting to return in other franchise projects, the show has been returning to the public eye recently. For example, Kate Mulgrew coming back as Admiral Janeway...

‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Drops Final Season Preview Clip at New York Comic Con
Image
The animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks” premiered a new clip from its forthcoming final season at New York Comic Con, showcasing the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos pursuing its Season 5 mission: closing “space potholes” — and meeting alternate versions of themselves as they cross through one of those subspace rifts.

The comedic yet still in-continuity show set in the wider “Star Trek” universe features the ship’s junior officers working to stop these dimensional breaks from causing problems in the Alpha Quadrant this season. According to an official description, “Pothole duty would be easy for Jr. Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford… if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all — their own career aspirations.”

The show teases that Season 5 could feature its lowly crew getting promoted out of the titular lower decks “into strange new Starfleet roles.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Final Season Trailer Reveals Major Voyager Character's Return
Image
The new trailer for the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, is keeping with the animated comedys tradition of referencing former Star Trek shows. It does it once again by featuring the notorious forever-ensign Harry Kim, from the 1990s series, Star Trek: Voyager. Garrett Wang, who played Kim on Voyager poised the trailer on his X account.

The final scene of the trailer shows a group of Harry Kims, all but one still wearing the one-pip Starfleet rank of ensign. Kim, throughout the entire seven-season run of Voyager, was, while the ship was stuck in the Delta Quadrant, never promoted above the rank of ensign.

‘Voyager’ Character Harry S.L. Kim Returns in ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Final Season Trailer
Image
Star Trek: Voyager’s Ensign Harry S. L. Kim makes a surprise return in the fifth and final season trailer for the Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series from Paramount+.

Garrett Wang in fact voices many Kims in the official teaser, calling out at one point in shocked surprise, “Wait, everyone, shut up! This Kim’s got two pips!” That makes him a Starfleet lieutenant among an underdog crew eager to rise from the lower decks of the U.S.S. Cerritos.

“You’re all still Ensigns?” the singled out Kim asks of his rivals. Other hijinks teased in the final season trailer include the task of closing “space potholes” in the Alpha Quadrant.

Star Trek: Why Does Beckett Mariner Have a Different Last Name?
Image
Quick Links Who Is Beckett Mariner on Star Trek: Lower Decks? The Origin of Beckett Mariner and Her Name Comes from the Show's Creator Beckett Mariner Has Made Peace With Her Parents, but Still Doesn't Use Their Name Will Beckett Mariner Ever Start Going By Freeman?

When the universe created by Gene Roddenberry six decades ago returned for its third wave of series, parent company Paramount decided to push the boundaries of what Star Trek could be. Perhaps the greatest departure from what came before was the adult animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks. Essentially a workplace comedy in space, the series followed officers who inhabited the titular lower decks of the ship. One of Lower Decks main characters, Beckett Mariner, poses an interesting conundrum, as she has a different last name than her parents.

Created by Rick and Morty alum Mike McMahan, the series was directly inspired by The Next Generation episode "Lower Decks.

Wait, Did Robert Picardos Doctor Appear On Star Trek: Lower Decks?
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2!

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 references Star Trek: Lower Decks, sparking speculation about the Doctor's appearance in Lower Decks season 5. The Doctor's knowledge of the Cerritos raises questions about their connection, potentially through a brief stint on the ship or friendship with someone on the crew. Given Lower Decks' cameo history and the renewed interest in Voyager characters, a Doctor appearance in season 5 could be a fitting addition to the show.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 has raised the question of whether the Doctor (Robert Picardo) appeared on Star Trek: Lower Decks. Prodigy and Lower Decks are the only two animated shows in the current franchise, with Prodigy airing its second season on Netflix while Lower Decks' fifth and final season was announced earlier in 2024. ‘Snack Shack’ Review: Gabriel Labelle and Conor Sherry Play Teenage Hustlers in a By-the-Book Coming-of-Age Tale
Image
Can you remember how you spent your childhood summers? Were they by the pool eating concession stand junk? Biking everywhere you went? Fist-fighting your best friend? Falling for a girl from out of town? Something along those lines? Or maybe you just saw a movie like that. That kind of easy familiarity is what teen comedy “Snack Shack” comfortably sets up shop on. Armed with a talented cast, writer-director Adam Rehmeier’s 1991-set feature happily squares itself in a tradition of teenage hedonism and broad learning opportunities, settling into a generic but warm glow.

Early-20s actors Conor Sherry and Gabriel Labelle lead the film, stretching the laws of verisimilitude playing 14-year-old best friends, but emerging plausibly teenaged with their lame-brain rapport. The two play Aj and Moose, a pair of hustlers hunting for their next score after home-brewing a “drinkable as fuck” beer. When the friendly college-aged lifeguard Shane...

Conor Sherry & Gabriel Labelle Talk 'Being Idiots' in Snack Shack
Image
Snack Shack focuses on two best friends who began working at a community pool snack shack in Nebraska City during the summer of 1991. The lifelong friends are played by Conor Sherry and Gabriel Labelle, and they certainly went all in on their characters. From spending time together before the movie, visiting the hometown of their director, where the film was shot and took place, to actually getting down to write the film's signature f--- dogs, both Sherry and Labelle give it their all in this film.

Curious as to what the key is to perfectly writing out a word on a hot dog? "We had a lot of practice, and there are pictures of napkins across the whole bar...I think a lot of it comes down to the thickness of the mustard or ketchup you get," Sherry said. "I didn't write a single f--- dog," added Labelle. "All of that was Conor,...
