Grotesquerie Season 1 Review: Ryan Murphy's Compelling Ideas Hold Little Interest In FX Horror Mystery
Image
Despite strong performances from a stellar cast and potent symbolism offering compelling ideas, Grotesquerie doesnt evolve much past its plodding narrative and scattershot story. The new FX series was created by Ryan Murphy, best known for co-creating American Horror Story for the same network. His latest horror mystery offers a similar feel to the anthology show, as seasoned Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) investigates a series of grisly murders in her small town. She soon teams up with a local nun, Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), after learning the killings have key religious connotations.

Love Virtually Review | Metaverse Comedy Turns Awfully Silly
Image
Love Virtually is an ensemble comedy that explores a society obsessed with social media and virtual reality, drawing parallels to our post-covid world. The film suffers from budget restraints and underwhelming actors, aside from Cheri Oteri and Stephen Tobolowsky. Love Virtually drags on due to its attempt to incorporate numerous real-world metaphors and references, and viewers may feel fatigued by it.

If you're too scared to ask out your crush, why not enter the Metaverse and try to meet them that way? Love Virtually, a new ensemble comedy from co-writer/producer/director/co-star L.E. Staiman, explores said notion and dares us to accept a society obsessed with the Metaverse and other virtual reality-type norms that the real world has grown accustomed to as of late, especially in these post-covid lockdown times. Sound familiar?

The feature film, which is out now, even pokes fun at the various controversies surrounding the coronavirus pandemic,...

Love Virtually Director on Bringing a Metaverse Production to Life
Image
Pandemic lockdown — remember when? Covid-19 kept us indoors for a then-unforeseen length of time, leaving us questioning the future and perhaps our livelihood. The virus is sadly still around, but at least we've been out seeing the world for quite some time at this point. Most of us hadn't used Zoom before the coronavirus, but many of us turned to the app and VR-type technology back in 2020 and 2021 to help pass the time and help us feel somewhat like the social butterflies we once were.

This sort of digital Metaverse is explored in satirical fashion with Love Virtually, a new ensemble comedy feature from director L.E. Staiman that stars Cheri Oteri (Scary Movie), Stephen Tobolowsky (Silicon Valley), Tom Virtue (Even Stevens), and more. We recently caught up with Staiman to learn more about the unique new project that he also co-wrote, co-produced, and co-starred in.

11 Beloved Family Movies Turning 20 In 2023
Image
Twenty years ago, tween-girl cinema thrived. Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and Amanda Bynes kicked off the junior rom-com eras -- bringing their Disney and Nickelodeon fans along for the ride. Big-screen coming-of-age stories, family sagas, and whimsical made-for-television movies defined youth culture in 2003. Pop music became more accessible to children. Bright colors and Y2K fashion arrived in full force. Kids were paying attention to the media and products advertised to them.

As a person who turned nine in '03, I vividly remember this era of family films. They were hopeful, playful, and rife with young characters seeking adventures. I'll never forget when my sister and I saw our first movies on DVD instead of VHS: "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" and "What a Girl Wants." For millennial fans, Hilary Duff's Italian excursion has been on repeat as a literal soundtrack of our lives. Amanda Bynes' British battle of the debutantes sharpened our rebellious side.

‘NCIS: LA’: What’s Going on With the Callen Deep Fake?
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS: Los Angeles Season 13 Episode 10 “Where Loyalties Lie.”] Remember last season when the team worked a case that ended with the reveal of a deep fake of Special Agent G. Callen (Chris O’Donnell)? Well, it’s back on NCIS: Los Angeles. In Season 12’s “Imposter Syndrome,” the team was duped by a deep fake of Special Agent Fatima Namazi (Medalion Rahimi). During the investigation, the agents discovered a deep fake had been created of Callen. The case wasn’t tied up neatly with a bow, but there was speculation that whoever was behind the operation knew the team, like Russian spy Katya (Eve Harlow). At the time, Special Agent Sam Hannah (LL Cool J) had called it “the ultimate trap for Anna (Bar Paly).” Is that what’s going on here? At the beginning of “Where Loyalties Lie,” Callen was confused when he received a call from Dr. Hodge (Tom Virtue), following ...
