Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
The Faculty remake is being written by Companion’s Drew Hancock
Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Back at the end of December 2023, just two days after the 25th anniversary of the release of director Robert Rodriguez‘s alien invasion horror film The Faculty (watch it Here), which reached theatres on December 25, 1998, scooper Daniel Richtman has revealed on his Patreon page that Rodriguez was on board to produce a remake of The Faculty. Now, thirteen months later, Variety has finally confirmed that scoop – and they have also revealed that the screenplay for the remake is being written by Drew Hancock, writer/director of the sci-fi thriller Companion, which reaches theatres tomorrow. JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols already had the chance to see Companion and gave it a 9/10 review that can be read Here.

Rodriguez directed the original The Faculty from a screenplay by Scream writer Kevin Williamson (working from a story by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel). The film has the following synopsis: To the students at Harrington High,...

30 Years Later, Give Clive Barker's 'Lord of Illusions' a Second Chance
Image
Clive Barker has gifted audiences with some of the most disturbing horror stories for over 40 years, both in his many works of fiction and his occasional forays onto screens both big and small. The British horror icon is best known for writing and directing Hellraiser, a screen adaptation of his novella The Hellbound Heart, which spawned a massively successful (though creatively dubious) franchise and a well-received reboot in 2022. Dismayed by poor adaptations of his previous work, Barker opted to direct the film himself, a relatively unprecedented move for a young writer at the time.

While Hellraiser is often in the conversation for best horror films of all time, Barker's two follow-ups as director failed to capture the same kind of attention. His second film, Nightbreed, flopped upon release, but has since come to be considered an underrated cult classic, receiving a director's cut re-release back in 2014. But his third film,...

Jean-Claude Van Damme's Forgotten 25-Year-Old Sequel With 5% Rt Score Now Streaming for Free
Image
Universal Soldier: The Return, starring the iconic Jean-Claude Van Damme, was released in 1999 to heavy criticism. Twenty-five years later, the film is available to stream for free.

Jean-Claude Van Damme's critically panned film Universal Soldier: The Return is now available to stream on PlutoTV. The film is a sequel to the 1992 sci-fi film Universal Soldier, and it sees Van Damme return to reprise his role as the series protagonist, Private Luc Deveraux. The film was poorly received, with just a 5% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the first film's moderate success, Universal Soldier: The Return only grossed $10 million at the box office, failing to make back its $40 million budget.

‘Lord of Illusions’ 30 Years Later – Is Clive Barker’s Forgotten Movie Worth a Revisit?
Image
Note: This review is based on the Director’s Cut.

Umbrella Entertainment resurrected a forgotten flick from the mid-90s with their Blu-ray release of Lord of Illusions last year. Back in 1995, writer-director Clive Barker ventured outside his normal horror otherworld playground to deliver this unconventional story that is part film noir and part supernatural fantasy thriller, but the result is all entertaining. Besides being a Barker joint, it starred an ex-Quantum Leaper, a Bond villain and a Seinfeld boss who loved making life a living hell for George Costanza!

And almost thirty years later, it indeed might be worth a revisit through fresh eyes.

A specialist in cases involving occult activity, private detective Harry D’Amour heads to Los Angeles for what is supposed to be an easy insurance fraud stakeout to shake off the trauma from his last job involving a demonically possessed young boy. This gig...

Image
Actor Joe Mantegna has previously recorded a commentary for the 1996 Stephen King adaptation Thinner with the film’s director Tom Holland (whose other credits include Fright Night and Child’s Play)… but that didn’t stop him from sitting down to record a new commentary for Scream Factory’s upcoming Blu-ray release of Thinner! This time, Mantegna was joined by producer Mitchell Galin – and we’ll get to hear what they had to say about Thinner when the Blu-ray is released on January 23rd. Revisiting the film of Stephen King's Thinner
Rebecca Lea Oct 30, 2017

Our lookbacks at the screen adaptations of Stephen King find us at Thinner, starring Robert John Burke...

The film: Morbidly obese and deeply unpleasant lawyer Billy Halleck (Robert John Burke) runs over an old gypsy woman with his car, distracted by his wife Heidi (Lucinda Jenney) who is doing something rather rude to him. His ties to the local law enforcement, Judge Cary Rossington (John Horton) and Chief of Police Duncan Hopley (Daniel von Bargen), means the case is dismissed before it gets to court. However, the old woman’s father (Michael Constantine) has a different kind of justice in mind. He curses Halleck with the word ‘thinner’ and soon, Halleck begins to lose weight at a dangerous and ever-increasing rate.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards in Seinfeld (1989)
'Seinfeld' bosses, ranked
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards in Seinfeld (1989)
In a couple of weeks, TV (The Book) will be in stores (though you can pre-order it now), featuring my and Matt Zoller Seitz's top 100 list of American TV shows and essays extolling their greatness. Most of the book was assembled with a Talmudic level of thoroughness. But scattered throughout are some shorter, sillier lists, which we assembled more on instinct and/or what made us laugh in the moment, on subjects like TV's best spies, best mustaches, and most important articles of clothing. Two of those lists involve TV's best and worst bosses, and a friend who has an advance copy asked me yesterday to go even more granular and rank the various Seinfeld bosses (considering only people who stuck around a while, as opposed to poor Mr. Tomasulo, who gave George a handicap-accessible bathroom). I didn't overthink it, but just went with my gut, and this is what resulted.

Casting 'Clown Car '16, the Movie'
French Stewart
Start with the title: Clown Car! may sound like the movie someone will inevitably make about the 2016 presidential campaign, but how about evoking those great Seventies wacky-journey films like Death Race 2000, Vanishing Point or Smokey and the Bandit?

When I raised the question on Twitter, suggestions included All the President's Wanna-Bes, Every Which Way But Left, Cannonball Rug, A Kochwork Orange and the subtly appropriate Hair.

All excellent ideas, and we may have to put the movie name to a separate vote. Right now, though, the more pressing question is...

Lord Of Illusions: 20 Years Later, Clive Barker’s Underappreciated Horror Noir is Still Cinematic Magic
Why isn’t there more horror noir? With the exception of a few movies — 1987’s Angel Heart and the 1991 made-for-hbo film, Cast a Deadly Spell, among them — not many filmmakers have crossbred the horror genre with hardboiled film noir. And yet it seems like such a natural fit: film noir’s propensity for shadowy photography, its fascination with the dark side of human nature and a willingness to be unremittingly bleak all lends itself to horror, which so often embraces similar conventions. And, yet, the horror noir remains a rare animal.

In 1993, author and filmmaker Clive Barker created his own horror/noir hybrid with Lord of Illusions, adapted from his own short story, “The Last Illusion” (from Books of Blood Volume 6). It follows Los Angeles private detective Harry D’Amour (Scott Bakula) as he looks into the murder of a shop owner with ties to the occult. D'Amour’s investigation...

Blu-ray Review – Lord of Illusions (Scream Factory)
In late October, the director’s cut of Nightbreed was finally unleashed upon hungry fans. We’ve been waiting for that release for what seems like decades, and its pre-order phase was met with the appropriate internet buzz, both good and bad. Now Scream Factory are dropping another Clive Barker film upon us, and it too comes with a Director’s Cut, as well as the Theatrical Cut. Some may argue that this is the superior film of the two releases. Some, but not myself. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lord of Illusions, and especially the director’s cut, but for me, Nightbreed is the perfect monster movie. Lord of Illusions is more of a dark pulp detective movie than a horror movie, but it’s dark enough, and violent enough for it to fit nicely in that genre as well. This is a case where Barker had...

Don’t Look in the Basement – Digitally Restored (Film Chest, DVD)

Don’t Look in the Basement, also known as The Forgotten, is one of the best low-budget movies in the horror/thriller genre. With a budget of roughly $100,000, the film is presented in great B-movie style with generally good acting and directing.

Brainwashings, torture, delusion, mass suicide, violent acts… all are behaviors that have been linked to various cult organizations over the years. Horror filmmakers have long understood the dark side of men like Charles Manson and Jim Jones – and have used those harrowing tales to craft their own terrifying masterpieces. One of those classics makes its debut on Blu-ray this month. Clive Barker’s 1995 film Lord of Illusions casts a deadly spell involving real magic and the cult dedicated to its brutal leader, Nix (Daniel Von Bargen). Part dark fantasy, part neo-noir, and as...

Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Release Of Clive Barker’s Lord of Illusions – Extras Announced, Releases 12/16
This is finally happening, and I can’t wait. It has been a really long time since I have seen Lord of Illusions. Fresh off of the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed, I could definitely use some more remastered Clive Barker films in my life. Scream Factory have announced the extras that will be included in their Collector’s Edition of the film. We get a Clive Barker commentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette, some rare on-set footage, deleted scenes with Clive Barker commentary, and likely more. I’ve noticed that they usually undersell the bonus content on their discs, mostly due to space limitations, I would assume. This is shaping up to be a fantastic release, with a new transfer, and what looks to be a generous amount of extras. The release hits shelves on the 16th of December. You can pre-order a copy for yourself either on amazon, or the Shout!

‘Lord of Illusions’ Blu-ray Review (101 Films)
Stars: Scott Bakula, Kevin J. O’Connor, Famke Janssen, Joseph Latimore, Sheila Tousey, Susan Traylor, Ashley Tesoro, Trevor Edmond, Wayne Grace, Daniel von Bargen, Johnny Venocur | Written and Directed by Clive Barker

Liverpool born Clive Barker is a well-known name in fiction, and especially in horror. His novels have sold millions of copies all over the world and many of his stories have been adapted to the screen over the last three decades, one of those films was Lord of Illusions, based on the short story “The Last Illusion” from Barker’s Books of Blood Vol. 6, a compilation of stories from 1985.

Directed by Clive himself, Lord of Illusions is a fantasy horror starring Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap), Kevin J. O’Connor and Famke Janssen (X-Men). Malcolm in the Middle Season 1 DVD Review
It’s been over a decade since Malcolm in the Middle first started airing, and for a lot of programmes, that kind of length of time is enough to make it seem more than a little dated. Malcolm in the Middle is not one of those shows. Its characters, storylines, and dialogue are just as hilarious as I remember, and I have the added benefit now of getting the jokes put in for the adults. The show has become somewhat iconic, with They Might Be Giants’ opening credits song readily singable by a generation, and for good reason.

Frankie Muniz stars as the young Malcolm, who is discovered in the pilot episode to be something of a genius, with an Iq of 165 at the age of 12. He’s moved from his regular class into the school’s gifted class, becoming a ‘Krelboyne’ in the process, and consequently labelled a nerd.

Lord of Illusions Star Daniel von Bargen Survives Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound to the Head
In truly tragic and infuriating news, actor Daniel von Bargen (Lord of Illusions, Super Troopers, The Silence of the Lambs, The X-Files, Thinner, "Seinfeld") fumbled a suicide attempt and has been hospitalized.

According to the 911 phone call posted by TMZ (who else?) the character actor made from his Cincinnati home, von Bargen sustained a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. The 61-year-old appears discombobulated on the phone: "I was supposed to go to the hospital and I didn't want to… they were supposed to amputate at least a few toes," he said, adding that he is diabetic.

Though we wish von Bargen well and hope that he'll have a speedy recovery, we find it hard to elicit much sympathy for the man after trying to take his own life.

'Lord of Illusions' Star Hospitalized After Suicide Attempt
Lord of Illusions (1995)
Literally a day after going on a Twitter rant about the local news being worse than anything you'll ever see on the big screen, ABC shamelessly shares a horrifying story about an ex-movie star who attempted to take his own life. In a world where news outlets brag about scoring exclusive interviews with the parents of rape victims, they also have audio of a 9-1-1 call where Lord of Illusions and Thinner star Daniel von Bargen survives a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. We will not link the audio. If you're a sick f*ck, go Google it. According to the call, Von Bargen shot himself to avoid going to the hospital. He is a diabetic and was supposed to have two of his toes amputated that day. According to Montgomery Police Srgt. Greg Vondenbenken, Von Bargen was seriously injured. They took him to Bethesda North hospital...

Actor Daniel Von Bargen’s 911 Call After Shooting Himself Is Not Recommended Listening
Daniel von Bargen, 61, a character actor most known for playing Mr. Kruger on Seinfeld and Chief Grady in Super Troopers, is in critical condition in a Cincinatti hospital after shooting himself in the head on Monday. This is sad news in and of itself, of course. But what’s making it even sadder is the six-minute-plus 911 call TMZ obtained. We would really, really like to unhear it now.

To spare you from the same, we’ll just recap it right here and then you can avoid it at all costs: Von Bargen says he shot himself in the temple with a 38, five to 10 minutes before calling. The operator asks a number of questions and apparently wants to keep him talking until the EMTs get there. Von Bargen says he won’t be able to get to the door and he can’t open his eyes. He admits to shooting himself...

Seinfeld Actor Survives Suicide Attempt, Listen to 911 Call
Daniel von Bargen, who is best known for playing George's boss Kruger on "Seinfeld," is clinging to life in an Ohio hospital after shooting himself in the head Monday morning in a failed suicide attempt. He already had a leg amputated and has had enough. An ambulance arrived in five minutes, with paramedics shouting for the actor to keep his hands where they can see them and asking if there was another gun in the room. Von Bargen spoke clearly, but kept saying that he can't open his eyes. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently in critical condition.
